The problem is with the handicap numbers.  A triangle course has only  33% beat, if equilateral.  The more you spread out the offset mark, the less percentage the beat; the more you pull it in, the higher percentage beat.For PHRF to work, I believe they recommend at least a 40% beat.

Raced on a friend's old Morgan 30 (the big heavy one, not the classic 300) and we just used the wheel, setting it up before the race. Sometimes we had a rail guy take off on the downwind leg and then tighten it up again before the beat. For cruising, it really wouldn't matter about timeliness.

My 30-1 is a '73 with lower numbers than Gary's and the halyards run from a turning block in the mast directly to the winches. I have no tangs in the mast, nor do I have any holes where they might have been attached. I don't believe my boat came with the tangs originally for this reason. Ron
