Hi Chuck, I see you may be looking for new sails. You might want to give John Jenkins of Jenkins Sails a call. Great guy, builds a lot of sails for the Naval Academy, Star sailors, Comets and others. I gave a good Genoa hemade for my roller fuller and a really nice looking main I got last year. He's reasonably priced  and local and will come out and take his own measurements

As mentioned at that time, sailboatowners.com has worked with Rod to get it made again after Rod had a stroke.

They now have it in stock and ships in 1 business day.

4 rolls for me and my marina buddies are inbound.  I was getting worried that their stock would arrive in time for spring !

First, make sure whatever inflatable you buy has thermowelded seams.  I think all of them should be that way now.  Don't buy glued seams.  I had one of those.  The bottom fell out one day on the way to the beach.  Nothing like zipping along in a bottomless donut with a 7.5 hp motor.

Second, motors are nice but a pain to deal with.  We just row most of the time now.  The motor is in a storage shed in the backyard.

Third, if I do go back to a motor, weight will be the primary consideration.  Sure, it's fun to plane in our inflatable with the 7.5 hp but having to mount and dismount the 80 pound motor with a halyard is a pain.  I can get to the beach just as well with a 2.5 lightweight motor.  Think about it.  You sailed to the anchorage at 6 knots.  Why do you need to do 20 knots to get to the beach?

   All,

A friend of mine had a 38 Mk 111 and had all of the below deck handholds on the cabinets, chart table and dining table plated in chrome. They really brightened up the boat. He has passed, so I am not able to find out where he had them done.

I have mine off as we are redoing the table in all teak veneer vs the white.
They are the old dark brown paint and need updating. So thinking about either plating or powder coating. So far I have gotten some quotes ranging from 65 to 120 each. Searching out some RI companies now as it has a ton of costume jewelry industry. Wondering if anyone has done anything similar?
   Thanks!

Re: Stus-List Rob - C long time question

2018-10-01 Thread Chris Price via CnC-List
I bought Pradel,35 Mk 1 #173 January 1999. I specifically was
Poking for a 35 mk1 for her sailing ability as well as accomodations for my
wife and four children. We raced her very successfully for several years with
her old sails but as the kids moved on, now I've settled into full cruising
mode with roller furling, 2 dozen crab traps and an inflatable and outboard
carried onboard. Now I get my racing fix sailing an old Comet but spending most
of my time cruising the Chesapeake out of the Magothy River.

I really hate towing a dinghy when sailing. I used to use the spinnaker halyard
to hoist our inflatable on to the foredeck but found it to be way easier to
just release the lifeline pelican hooks and just manhandle the thing onboard.

We checked and cleaned the air filter, the fuel filters and did a check of

Some research today led me to believe that it’s the head gasket.

I’ll get it to the yard and have a pro look at it.

 Edd,

Have the head check closely for cracks. Sometimes the gasket fails owing to
issues with th e head/block surfaces.

I spent one summer season nursing my old Yanmar powered CC 36 around the
PNW with a cracked head. I would use the compression release to get it
started when cold. Changed the oil every few weeks.

We did re-power after that cruising season with a newer model Yanmar. I
second the comment regarding the extra costs incurred when switching engine
models. A key for me with the 36's older model Yanmar was the future
 availability of spare parts.

Joe, when I got my roller furler, I bought a new genoa, too. Decided on a 150
since it's the Chesapeake. Have only reefed the foresail a couple of times in

By the way, ran into Richard Kinder, previous owner, on the Wye River over
Memorial Day weekend. He said to say hello. It was fun to see two Pradel's

OK. I get that our boats are faster with clean bottoms. But I just had

I got to wondering if this is typical. Well, is it?

Had my first sail of the year last Saturday. Did a 10 mile distance race from
Annapolis to Gibson Island singlehanded. First singlehanded race of my life.
Great sun, 80 degree air and 65 degree water and wind was 8 to 12 knots.
Finished in the back of the fleet of crewed boats but not last. Should have
used a spinnaker, but still working on those skills. One of the most
challenging and beautiful and memorable sailing days yet. I'm almost over the
sore muscles. Might do another race again next weekend.

All,

The RC has approved a double handed class for the Down the Bay Race on May
22-23. We need 3 more boats to have a class.

Grab your wife or girlfriend (but don't tell one about the other) and sail down
the Bay!

The Susquehanna just started to break up in some areas yesterday, withe the
bergy bits starting to pile up. I suspect the rest of the river will open up
after we get an inch of rain overnight tonight. The slow meltdown over the last
few days hopefully will prevent the ice from backing up and causing flooding.

South Jersey is sharing that weather, reporting 12.5 F and NW 35 to 45 knot
winds, gusting to over 55. The ocean swells are 7 to 11 ft.
Delaware Bay swells are 3 to 6 ft. Tides expected to be 2 feet lower than
normal due to high winds.

We got only 2 inches of snow since yesterday, but the wind has blown it into
bare spots next to foot deep drifts. The snow is blowing across the lawn like a
white river, similar to the way sand blows down the beach when the winds are
over 20 knots. The lake nearby was blue water last week and is frozen and
covered in white today.

Re: Stus-List Diving your own boat

2014-12-28 Thread Chris Price via CnC-List
Chuck, I've used CSC for a number of years now. Initially, it worked great, but
the last two paint jobs have given me very poor results. I think they've
changed the formula. Anecdotally, my diver recommends a Petit product, can't
remember which, but I'll find out before my next haulout, and real experience,
my brother has had excellent results from the same paint, same location.

When I clean the bottom, every couple of years, I attach a 3M Scotchbrite pad
to a pair of brown jersey work gloves with some silicon adhesive, put the bow
on a sandbar and scrub the bottom. I can do 90% of the hull while standing on
the bar. I may have to break down and get a mask and snorkel, but I can get it
done in 45 minutes with just a pair of fins. Some day, if you're in Black Hole
Creek, I'll show you the sandbars with a sharp drop. My wife usually stands in
ankle deep water holding the bow while I swim.

I'm sorry we didn't hook up this year but we were pretty busy with my
daughter's wedding in OCNJ. Looking forward to next spring already. I was down
at the club yesterday replacing moorings and was tempted to hoist the sails,
but I just winterized the engine last week!

Bob,
I have Micron 66 on my boat. It did a wonderful job in salt water of Jersey but
isn't designed for brackish water of the Chesapeake. Interlux recs CSC for
there. I intend to switch on my next haulout, and may try a hard, scrubable,
multi-season, water based, paint for environmental reasons.

I think I have to sand it off to switch, so I may do a touchup instead, and
wait another season to switch? It's expensive but worth it.

High 50's today, near 70 tomorrow. Some clouds.

Brought Touche' back from Pensacola last week. A bit chilly for me. High 40's
at sun up, mid to high 60's during the day. Worst day was Wednesday. Left The
Wharf Marina on the ICW at Orange Beach, Alabama an hour before sunrise in 48F
weather. Sun came up as we motored across Bon Secour Bay off east Mobile Bay.
Had enough wind to roll out genoa to gain half knot or so. It was a 12 hour
passage to Gulfport. Mississippi

Got into Mandeville Thursday a bit before sundown. Started raining on us as we
were leaving the marina in my truck. Timing is everything.

One funny thing happened on the trip. On Wednesday, we passed a tow in the Pas
au Herons Channel behind Dauphin Island, Alabama, The Margaret was pushing 4
loads wide and 2 strung out for a total of 8 barges. Margaret was only
managing 2.7 knots according to AIS. On Thursday, after spending the night in
Gulfport, we again passed the Margaret at the east end of Lake Borgne. I was
s tempted to hail them with It's me again, Margaret (remember the Ray
Stevens song?).

Chuck, we need to get the wives together! My wife doesn't like it either, but
she does put up with it. Fortunately, she explained she has every confidence in

Hiring a coach or taking a course won't change the fact that she doesn't like

the same. My son however is like me and took to sailing right off. He joined
his college's sailing team and loves racing with me. I've raced the boat
without my wife or daughter and won regattas with 1st time ever crew, so I
assure you I am fairly competent. I can calmly explain which line to put to
what winch and which way to turn it and never raise my voice except to be
heard. I've put newbies on the wheel and coached them to steer and they loved
steering. I've also taken guests who just wanted a ride, didn't want to do
anything and I just set the autohelm and do it all like I do when I'm alone. My
wife likes that style until it gets above 10 knots when the boat comes alive
and we start making 6 plus knots and heel to 25 degrees cause the apparent
becomes 16 and then we're doing 7.3 knots and lovin it, until she's almost
crying something like, do you have to make it lean so much? Let's find a place
to go swimming.

She's missing the sailing gene, but I can't change her and she has no desire to
take a course or let me hire a coach. I guess I'll run our boat like a trawler
when she's aboard, and save the sailing for when she's not there. I'm gonna
order that tow toy.

Ok, here's a response from a woman.

I married into sailing. Started with a small boat, took trips to New England
and the Caribbean on charters in significantly larger boats (where my love for
CC began). I learned to love the lifestyle and a bit of racing but what really
shifted my thinking was crewing on someone else's boat.

Consider this, expectations are high and so is pressure when sailing with a
spouse. When sailing on another accomplished skippers boat as added crew, you
see how the experienced crew handles everything and before you know it you
relax, a few years have passed, and your right there with them, loving every
second.

I wouldn't expect every wife to catch the bug I did, but they might certainly
see sailing from a different perspective and enjoy it more with a higher level
of confidence.

I know on Lake Lanier and other bodies of water there are some very patient and
good skippers that would welcome a learning spouse. I'd be happy to help as
well...

Dennis / others,

Do you have any recommendations for such a course, preferably somewhere warm
and with some considerable learning opportunities (moving from very competent
crew to command / self-sufficiency, not basics)? Bev / other female listers,
I'd be interested in your opinions too.

Thanks,

It is a two lever control. The outer housing rotates with the throttle lever
and the inner housing rotates forward and back for forward, neutral and
reverse. I guess it's a side, flush mount, mounted to starboard of the wheel on
the side of the helmsman's cockpit.

Re: Stus-List Engine Sound Insulation - Go Without an engine?

2014-08-28 Thread Chris Price via CnC-List
Back when I was a teenager, my brother and I almost always sailed our Columbia
Sabre (5.5m hull made into a narrow racer/cruiser) in and out of the slip. Our
auxiliary power was a temperamental 5hp British Seagull (aren't they all) that
was a pain to carry up the companionway and mount on the transom. I learned
early that good springlines were the key.

I've always wanted to practice sailing to a dock, but I don't have a slip. I've
sailed on and off of a single point mooring but not my three point mooring. The
three point dictates which direction you're approaching from regardless where
the wind is. Same as a slip but with a slip you can sidle up with the spring
line, not so with the mooring. Quickly grabbing a stern line and throwing it on
a winch is fine and all but not optimal. Optimal is bringing the boat to a stop
and leisurely dealing with the lines. Not always an option depending on
conditions of course.

How do you stop the boat with the wind behind you?

I'm eager to learn this but I'm also eager not to damage my boat on the gnarly
breakwall just forward of my slot. We're finally gonna get a sail in today
after work, maybe I'll try it with the motor in neutral, just in case. Main or
jib? Which is more appropriate for manoeuvring and docking in tight quarters
shorthanded?

Which is exactly why I advocate practicing sailing in! We lose these skills
over time, so practice is necessary and far from irresponsible. Nothing says we
have to come charging in at hull speed. Try approaching with just the jib or
just the main up--it's part of getting to know your boat. It sure beats waiting
for SeaTow as your boat drifts down an grounds on the jetty.

And in a man overboard situation, I absolutely would prefer to use the engine.
Unless it was too rough, or as very often happens in the kefuffle of a man
overboard, a line wraps around the prop. That's the reason we ALWAYS practice
MOB retreival under sail.

into the fairway) or going out and when anchoring etc. And I bet that most of
us would prefer to use the engine in a MOB situation than do it under sails
alone.
The harbours got more crowded, the slips narrower, the skills required did not
get better and the engines did. Not to mention that we very often sail
shorthanded.
This does not take away from the fact that not that long ago even bigger
vessels operated without the auxiliary power and somehow managed to do that.

Guess I am missing something here…maybe I don’t understand what is meant by
“marina”. I know it is possible to dock a 35 footer like Alianna at a “marina”
using sails only and I have done it a time or two but under unfavorable wind
conditions due to direction or strength in such close quarters I prefer to use
auxiliary power and have my sails down and packed away before going to the dock
or maybe I am missing what auxiliary power means to anyone in craft not
outfitted with sails…or maybe I have just become more of a whimp and less of a
purest as I grew older…hell I even prefer auxiliary power when tieing up to a
mooring in a crowded mooring field and sailing off a mooring in a crowded field
in some wind conditions can also be tricky and unnecessarily risky

In my olden days as a member of the Yacht Club's Executive Committee, business
was brought forth to propose that sailboats must use engines in the marina (or
something to that effect). I pointed out that engines are auxiliary power on
sailboats and if we are to endorse this business I will push that ALL vessels
operating in the marina are required to use auxiliary power.

That was the end of discussion.

Good times.

Danny, I had a similar issue with my A4 a couple of years ago. I felt that the
issue was an air leak in the fuel system. After checking every connection I
could think of, spending money on a mechanic, installing a new, electric fuel
pump, etc. I decided to pull the fuel tank. When I took off the pick up fitting
and lifted it up, the plastic pick up tube fell off the barbed fitting. 15
cents of the pink teflon tape later and the problem was solved!

Okay,
Given all the discussion, I've decided the next step, as it is really the only
thing I did not replace, is to buy a 5 gal outboard engine gas can and run the
engine with a brand new gas can and brand new gas. My gut is leading me back to
the tank and the pickup tube.
I think this will eliminate the entire existing gas system and either show me
the light or eliminate it from the investigation. Of course, I won't be able to
test it all out until Saturday.
If the Gas can does not do the trick, I'll swap the carburetor again... I'll go
home and clean that up tonight so I have it at the ready. So, should I, if the
gas can does not prove to be the issue, continue on the 5 gal OB tank and swap
the carb or go back to the existing tank before swapping out the carburetor?

While not A4 specific, these examples might help solve your engine problem.

A fellow CC lister had a CC 24 with an inboard Volvo Penta gas
engine..the engine simply would not start, or stay started, with anything
but Volvo Penta spark plugs. He can chime in and tell you the story.

I have an old (est. 50 years) Lawn Boy lawn mower.for years, it started the

restart. Replaced the coil, problem solved.

Keep working at it, you will find the problem.

Alright, the saga continues.

We went for a sea trial Sunday after the changes, i.e. Vent line cleared,
filters changed, clamps tightened. The engine ran great all the way to
Cuttyhunk. I probably ran it about 3 hours. Two of those hours I ran it a
little harder than I normally do after having read Don M's reasons for having
black sooty spark plugs. I thought my problems were solved.

On our way home from cuttyhunk, We motored out the harbor and decided that,
because the wind was a little light, we would motor home to run the engine some
more. 50 minutes into our ride home, the same thing, only a bit slower. the
whole, slow, stall happened over maybe a minute or two. Some sputter, then run
normal, a little more sputter, then normal and then a slow stall.

We then sailed home and into the mooring field. This is actually a benefit of
the engine troubles, I've been a bit intimidated about sailing onto the mouth
of the river due to the current and very tight channel flanked by shoals and
some pretty ominous looking rocks. I've now had to sail into the harbor twice
over this last weekend. At one point we were probably doing 4 or 4.5knts
through the water but only 1 to 1.5knts over the ground fighting that current.
On one side of the boat it a big, rocky cliff and the other shoal. it was a
little adrenalin pumping! Anyway, the approach to our mooring was dead, head to
wind, along with the current in the same direction, I lost forward motion under
sail and started the engine. She started right up and we motored onto the
mooring without incident.

So, safely moored, I pulled the vent tube, it was clear. I then went below and
pulled a spark plug and it was all black and sooty again after maybe 4 hours
running time.

I used the Moyer rebuild kit on the carb that is on there now. I'm not sure
but, I think I changed the main jet to the moyer recomended one at that time. I
think it came with the rebuild kit.

My earlier idling issues seemed to have been solved by swapping out the carb
that came with the exchange engine for the one I rebuilt off the original
engine and had just sitting around as a spare. I think what I would like to do
now is, clean up the carb that came with the exchange engine. and swap them
back out. I'll then replace the plugs and run it some more. Unless you guys
think I should maybe try another path forward.

2014-08-01 Thread Chris Price via CnC-List
I painted my boat for less than $2,500 a couple of years ago. Did all of the
prep work, bought the Awlgrip primer and paint, and hired a guy to shoot it.
After the haul out, storage for the month, painting, new shaft, dripless shaft
log, new cutlass bearing, bottom paint and relaunch I think I was up to $4,000
all in. Of course, nowadays most yards won't allow you to spray Awlgrip without
an environmentally sound, enclosed space. I was lucky and got away with it.

I painted my topsides with one-part Brightside about two years ago – flag blue
– and have been happy with the results even in the Florida sun.
Yeah, you get a slight fading if you don’t wax. I don’t mind because it still
looks good, and I don’t want to have to strip off wax to do an occasional
touch-up when I scrape something. That’s another advantage. Stuff happens. And
Brightside is easy to touch up.
My plan is to add another coat or two when I haul out every four or five years.
That adds about two days to my yard time.
The cost to do a nice job is under $100. With good prep, there’s no problem
with peeling or chipping. For an older small boat, I just don’t see the sense
of spending thousands on an Awlgrip paint job.

I second Russ' caution. If you're not stripping the old paint, try a test spot
first. Paints contain solvents which may not be compatible with other paints.

When we painted Touche' a few years ago, I prepped the hull with degreaser then
320 grit sandpaper. We shot a test spot of Awlcraft. It didn't stick to the old
paint and bubbled up where a second underlying paint had been exposed. I ended
up stripping all the old layers of paint with a Hutchins straight line sander.
Don't use a disc sander!

Even after stripping, it required 3 coats of high build primer to get good
results.

Thanks for the offer, Joe. You never know with these old A4s.

I’m sure you are right about the estimate but I have some wiggle room before
I get to the value of the boat. The PO was planning on salvaging the rig and
crushing the hull so you can imagine what I might have paid. The boat looked
tough but most of the issues (and there are a lot) are cosmetic. Â After three
weeks we are ready to get her in the water and do some sailing before the
season is over. I have spent so far just over $1500 and a LOT of elbow grease.
My wife is a very good seamstress and she is willing to do the cushions
including adding some back rests. We already have the materials in hand
(Sunbrella). I am not using Awlgrip, just some decent deck and epoxy paint. The
hull is in good shape and I will not be completely stripping the old paint. It
is in good shape, just a little beat up and the wrong color. I am keeping in
mind that this is not ever going to be a show boat. Just making it look good
and feel good for two to spend a weekend

2014-07-14 Thread Chris Price via CnC-List
Chuck, many of the anchorages we visit will accommodate 6'3. While you may not
be able to go all the way into Swan Creek, you can certainly enter and pick up
a mooring at Swan Creek Marina. Corsica is great and Reed Creek next door is
challenging whether you draw 5'3 or 6'3. We overnighted in Harris Creek last
Sunday off the Choptank, but you'd need to sail around Blackwalnut Point since
Knapp's Narrows has shoaled. Our depth sounder is still not working under power,
despite trying Bill Bina's suggestion of turning on incandescent lights, so any
mooring is a challenge for us! I guess I'm just saying don't totally exclude
the Easter Shore.

By the way, just got back yesterday from picking up a nice Laser 28 from Des
Moines, IA with my son. He's taking it to Somers Point today to sail in
Atlantic City Race Week. He should do well, but it means one less J24 to race.

Coquina was not purchased because we needed the shallow draft, she was
purchased because the previous owners moved to Barnaget Bay and had only about
4 feet at their dock. They bought a centerboard CC, a Corvette IIRC. Coquina
spent 12 years on the Magothy and then another 12 on the Severn before coming
to the Shore. Your boat would be able to use our marina about 2/3s of the time
this year. I think anything except right at low tide would work. Some years
when the dredging is late we cannot get out at normal low tide. This year it
has to be a NorthWester to be too shallow. This year I can use Kent Narrows
again. Last year anything over 4 feet was very risky.

OTOH 9 feet would be fine at my mooring, but that is a half hour drive upstream
and then 12 miles back downstream to get back out.

That's why Magothy is heaven for my me and our 6'3 draft, most places 12 to 18

FWIW, I notice deeper water exists on the Western Shore of the Chesapeake,
while shallower waters are on the Eastern Shore. A keel a foot deeper can
lighten a 35ft boat by 1000 pounds which plays a bigger role in lighter winds,
when racing. Light displacement is not so important where it's windy or if
you're motoring to gunkhole destinations more than sailing.

A deep fin protects the rudder, is shorter and thinner, and when you run
aground, you slimply motor back out or spin her off. The old Navy Luders Yawls
drew 8ft. The newer Navy 44 by Pedrick draw 7.25'. There are a few TP52s at
Bert Jabin's yard that draw 10 or 12ft. Just sayin.

+1 to Jacks comments. The difficulty with flushing is that the cold water inlet
and the drain line are shared. I replumbed my heater with a 3-way valve so that
when I want to flush I shift the valve and now the cold water goes IN the hot
water outlet and OUT the drain at the cold water inlet tap.

Since I was replumimg I also fit a thermal mixing valve so that the hot water
(170°) wouldn't burn anyone.

Re: Stus-List 4th of July

2014-06-19 Thread Chris Price via CnC-List
Joe, you should go to Swan Creek for the Rock Hall fireworks on the 3rd and
then Greys Inn Creek! One year we did Swan Creek, St. Michaels Baltimore and
Gibson Island and managed to catch the shows each night. This year we're
planning to be in Solomon's for the 4th. We'll have to get together at Reed
Creek one weekend with Chuck Schaefer so he can show me the way in. Depth
sounder stops working when I start the motor. Haven't run aground yet but it's
only a matter of time.

P.S are you in charge of the Corsica Race again? Had fun last year.

I have had problems with multiple depthsounders of different brands and types
when the motor is running for years. I found that turning on 3 or 4 interior
incandescent lights results in a working depth sounder. Try it.

Chuck, had a great sail to Swan Creek Saturday, not so good coming back on
Sunday. We were looking for you out there, but no luck. Like Joe says, Corsica
is great, but I prefer Reed Creek just shy of Corsica. I should be sailing the
Comet NA's this weekend on the Chester at Rock Hall YC, but work has gotten in
the way. We'll keep an eye out for you and one day meet up for drinks at PSA or
Broad Creek.

Spectacular weekend of sailing in a new to me sailing venue; Saturday I met
new friends visiting from Georgia, sailing in 14 to 25 knots making 7.3
upwind and down. The next day, got my AC working, sailed flat water w 6 knots
wind, overnighted with the admiral at anchor, sunset dinner. Counting stars
and sipping wine until the moon rose from behind the treelined shore.
The third day my daughter joined us and we sailed to a different little cove
and went swimming. Many great memories, many wonderful first impressions of
 the Magothy River.

I think she is the same as one that was in the next slip to me for years.
It was a Folk boat hull with Alberg cabin. I don't know who made them or how
many were made but I will ask the owners when I see them.

I added a brake to my pedestal when I first bought the boat, but that was 15
years ago. Don't remember what was involved, but I know I didn't have any
problems. I'd remember if there were issues.

Subject: Stus-List Edson Wheel Brake

Has anyone installed an Edson Wheel Brake Replacement Kit?

When I remove the Danforth compass and look down at where the new kit
should go, I wonder if this is a DIY job?

Reminds me of replacing my mixing elbow.if you were doing it on a
work bench, no big deal.doing it in the constricted space is a
challenge.

If anyone has done it or knows how to do it, what happens after the
compass is removed? Any and all advice welcomed.
