I went through this same process last year. I was very interested in the
MaxProp until I talked to a friend of mine who raved about his Gori 3-blade. I
looked into it and wound up buying a Gori 3-blade for our 30-2 as well. It’s a
unique design where the blades reverse, providing full performance in reverse
as well as a 2nd more aggressive pitch for cruising. It eliminated our prop
walk and has performed very well for us. Lower drag when folded compared to
the MaxProp. No connection to any of the companies, but thought I would add
another name to the search list.

I have a Max-Prop and have enjoyed the consistent operation and quality of
engineering which went into it. If I were in the market for a prop I would
seriously consider a flex-fold. As I understand it there is no pitch to set
and IIRC many of the components are plastic.

Martec sells a geared prop, the Slipstream. When I asked how it compares with
the Flexfold the only thing they came up with was that it was all stainless
steel. The difference in price, $1929 versus $1205 for the Flexfold is pretty
substantial especially if the only differentiation is the material. Is anyone
familiar withthe Slipstream prop?

Also, Flexfold as well as Slipstream offer the 2 bladed props in a racing
version. The racing version closes more tightly and has a "pointier" blade so
offers less resistance when folded. Any opinions about this are appreciated.

The Flex-o-Fold was a 16x12 2-blade. This was with the Yanmar 3GMF /
2.61:1 transmission. We replaced the engine with a 3GM30F last year and
that also works really well with the prop.

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a 35-3, and one of the projects it came with was the prop had
galvanic corrosion and needed to be replaced. It's a fixed two blade.

The previous owners adjusted the pitch on it, apparently from 10 to 8. They
seemed to think that improved performance but the boatyard is telling me that
the specs for the boat and engine call for 10. Does anyone have any thoughts on
this?

Thanks,

Stus-List Propeller Question for 35-3

2016-02-09 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List
As an additional data point I also have a 3GM30F with the 2.61:1
transmission and I second the 16D X 12P option (My pro is a Martec
Elliptec).

My boat is a somewhat different design but similar in dimensions and
general hull shape. Following Martec's recommendation I tried 16 X 14
blades and it was a cavitating / vibrating mess.. For what I do 16D X 12P
works fine with 7.0 knots top speed, tolerable vibrations, and somewhat
mediocre astern performance.

I'm on a smallish lake so unknown distant shores and busy seaways are just
not part of what we do. I've also become mostly a racer and don't motor
much. If I was on the coast or great lakes and traveled with the boat I
would most likely opt for something with more braking power..

Many factors at play, what you primarily do with the boat and things like
transmission ratios are key examples.

Good luck as it can become a tiresome and somewhat expensive trial and
error process..

The Bruntons 3 blade autoprop is by now means a low cost feathering
prop...i have the H5 model on Alianna driven by a Universal M4-30...it is a
great prop...it was on Alianna when I purchased her about 12 years ago and
so far not one issue with this baby, strong forward into a headwind or
rough sea and strong in reverse too...because it is auto pitching and self
feathering the drag factor is low for those who care about speed; I really
like this prop

I have done nothing in the last 8 or so years at least, I replaced the
bullet anode on the rear of the prop about 8 years ago and it's still
good but I use a donut anode on the shaft right in front of the hub
behind the strut...very close to the prop, maybe quarter inch away, it
gets replaced every year...also replace the teardrop anode forward of
the strut...costs about $25 Cdn every year, I view that as normal
maintenance for anodes but the bullet anode aft end of the prop lasts
longer with these 2 on the shaft in front of the prop...the bullet is
rather expensive, about $40 Cdn so I don't want to replace it every
year...other than that scape a few barnacle off the hub some years

My Martec doesn’t like to turn at slow speeds. I can actually feel the blades
flopping around if I’m near idle speed. It’s not a big issue, but the prop
does have some favorite rpm ranges. Mine is now about 12 years old and has
never been rebuilt. I only average about 50 hours a year motoring though.

Hi Josh,
I have a MaxProp and the annual service is simple.
Keep anodes changed as on any prop.
You grease with Lubriplate 130A. I keep a grease gun just for the prop.
I'm an HVAC mechanic and learned long ago to grease outdoor bearings in the
fall before winter so they don't freeze. If I pull the boat in the fall, I
grease the prop then, so any saltwater gets pushed out of the gearing. The prop
is pretty bullet proof, but I don't like to worry about water droplets freezing
inside where tolerances are close. I cover my winches with buckets for the same
reason. Cheap insurance.

Bill, yes it is. Please could you check out how you would like to ship? It
will be coming from CT or RI depending on when in the next couple of weeks.
There are Cotter pins and I think a shaft nut, but no shaft key. It was making
a nice paper weight in my office, but since I won't have an office in two weeks
time...

Thanks,

Tim

I have a Max-Prop and have enjoyed the consistent operation and quality of
engineering which went into it. If I were in the market for a prop I would
seriously consider a flex-fold. As I understand it there is no pitch to
set and IIRC many of the components are plastic.

Re: Stus-List Propeller Question for 35-3

2016-02-06 Thread Dave via CnC-List

When I sent in an inquiry this was their response. I replied that a 16" prop
was smaller than my current 17" Martek. They replied that they've sold this
prop is what best works on the boat, that they had sold many of them and not
had any complaints.

With a 3GM30, 27/3600 ( gear reduction ratio 1:2,61 ) we would recommend a
2-blade 16x12R or a 3-blade 16x11-3R propeller for your C 35MKIII .

The price for a complete 2-blade 16x12R propeller with hub for SAE standard
shaft is USD 1,205

The price for a complete 3-blade 16x11-3R propeller with hub for SAE standard
shaft is USD 2,035

Price is incl. shipping costs with a door-to-door service by UPS from Flexofold
in Denmark to the address in the USA (mainland). Please check if there are some
local duties.

Unless someone has or recommends a different size Flexfold prop on a 35 MK 3
I'm going to order the recommended 2 blade.

I'm with Tim. I had my Martek rebuilt last spring and was really disappointed
because even after the rebuild it wouldn't always open evenly. I'm replacing it
with a FlexFold. By the way reverse was OK you just need to get use to it.

Re: Stus-List Propeller Question for 35-3

2016-02-05 Thread Dave via CnC-List
I'm with Tim. I had my Martek rebuilt last spring and was really disappointed
because even after the rebuild it wouldn't always open evenly. I'm replacing it
with a FlexFold. By the way reverse was OK you just need to get use to it.

Sam,

IIRC, I’m swinging a 10x16 Martec elliptical prop. Good forward performance.
Reverse requires a lot of rpms to get a response, but it works for me.

I’m just a high speed – low drag racer anyway.

Does anyone have any thoughts on
this?

Thanks,

Sam

  Sam,

My Martec doesn’t like to turn at slow speeds. I can actually feel the
blades flopping around if I’m near idle speed. It’s not a big issue, but the
prop does have some favorite rpm ranges. Mine is now about 12 years old and
has never been rebuilt. I only average about 50 hours a year motoring though.

After owning three different boats with MAX Props I expect the answer to “is it
worth it” depends on how and where you use your boat.

The way we use Calypso it is definitely worth the cost and maintenance. We
often motor for hours against the current when doing deliveries. When we were
on the west coast of Vancouver Island having the extra ”traction” of a 3 blade
MAX prop made it possible to power into an angry sea. The boat stops like a
trawler. There is some prop walk but less than with a fixed prop. I have
operated MAX prop equipped boats with no noticeable prop walk.

If we only powered off a mooring buoy or out of a marina then shut down the
engine for the day one of the lower cost folder/feathering prop would be fine.

For mostly racing the two blade is my preference, for longer distance powering
(cruising/deliveries) the 3 blade is smoother. If you look closely at a MAX
prop be sure to check how much clearance you have between a blade tip and your
hull. Calypso’s 3 blade’s diameter is a bit larger than needed. We experience
a little more prop walk and vibration than necessary owning to the lack of tip
clearance.

Sam,

I have a 2-blade Martec Elliptic 17x10 RH folding prop for a 1" shaft that
you are welcome to try out for the cost of shipping (from New England). It
came off my 35-3 with Yanmar 3GMF and 2.2:1 transmission.

Fair warning, I replaced it with a flex-o-fold because I wasn't happy with
performance in reverse and occasional unbalanced opening (one blade more
than another) at low revs...

There are lots of resources for prop calculators but try the one below.
You'll have to know your engine max rpm and transmission gear ratio. It
will also be help to know the clearance from the shaft to the hull.

Consider a 3 blade for less slip. This is also a good time to seriously
consider a feathering or folding prop.

Re: Stus-List Propeller Question for 35-3

2016-02-03 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Joel reminded me, I forgot to mention that a properly pitched prop will
reach max engine RPM. My Yanmar has an instantaneous rating of 3600rpm, a
1 hour rating of 3400rpm, and a continuous rating of 3200rpm. The
correlating horse power changes with each rating. I chose the 1 hour
rating when setting the pitch on my Max-Prop. This ensures that I can get
max punch when needed but crack off for cruising. If you have a diesel,
remember they like to run at 80% load as often as possible. I know I'm
there when I see 2600-2800.

Re: Stus-List Propeller Question for 35-3

2016-02-03 Thread Joel Aronson via CnC-List
Sam,

Congrats! It shows you are a man of intellect and taste!

My MaxProp 2 blade is set to 14 degrees. Prior owners tried 12 and 16
before settling on 14. It depends on the diameter of the prop as well as
the pitch. If the engine revs to max RPM with a clean bottom it is pitched
properly. 8 sounds like too little!
