Today was officially the last day of fall banding here at Chico Basin
Ranch. I know; I'm sad too! Today we banded 47 new birds and *Hermit Thrush*es
were the number one banded species with a total of 12 new birds. A
*Green-tailed
Towhee* made for a nice late season surprise as we

So, we did manage to trap and band the* Northern Saw-whet Owl* that we
heard calling yesterday morning and even after his release today, he was
heard calling for almost the next hour or so, although no one was able to
successfully find and resight him. That brings our total of NSWO
Hiya!
The last few days have been a bit slow here at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area)
and we've been averaging about a dozen birds banded each day. *Ruby-crowned
Kinglet*s have been the number one species banded over the last two days
and we were fortunate to also band a handsome adult male

We caught and banded our second *Northern Saw-whet Owl* this morning here
at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area). This time it was a young male. The *White-eyed
Vireo* that was banded over a week ago was recaptured again today and this
time, it had gained significant fat/weight. In fact, it

Today's first net round yielded a young female Broad-winged Hawk, a bird
that had only been banded once before now and that was all the way back in
2002. So, another pretty exciting morning here at Chico Basin Ranch!!
Other than that early morning excitement, it was pretty slow and we

Today we banded our 900th bird for the fall banding season here at Chico
Basin Ranch (fee area). It was a *Blue Jay*! Haha now I know some of you
were thinking that it might be a *Brown Thrasher* as we have managed to
catch more of them than I, at least, ever thought possible. In fact,

Things are starting to heat up down here at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area)
and unfortunately, I don't mean with migration! Temps peaked around 88F
today and are predicted to go over 90F the next two days. Sadly, the
combination of high temps and clear skies are not the best for either

I just wanted to let everyone know that the male Prothonotary Warbler that
was banded today at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) in El Paso County was
resighted again in Holmes Grove twice this afternoon, the latest being
around 3pm. Speaking of Holmes Grove, it was alive with birds this
We actually banded that Cassin's Vireo after you left, Bill. Also banded
was a handsome male Red-shafted Flicker, one of two flickers seen today.
Orange-crowned Warblers are also starting to arrive in good numbers as well
as Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Holmes Grove was full of birds in the afternoon

We are just finishing up our second week of fall bird banding here at Chico
Basin Ranch (fee area) in Pueblo County with a little over 650 new birds
banded in total. We are finally starting to see an end to the 'new' (ie,
not previously banded) Brown Thrashers, having now banded

Our fall migration banding season officially began here at Chico Basin
Ranch (fee area) this past week and will continue through Saturday, October
1st. We're off to a great start having banded a little under 200 birds of
27 species. Highlights were definitely the Great-crested
