A team of five of us did a full day of birding for our annual Big Day event
in the San Luis Valley on May 17th. The team consisted of Lisa Gail, Lisa
Rawinski, Jake Myers, Randy Ghormley and myself and we hoped to break the
record of 153 species. We began at the Monte Vista Refuge and
areas and I think this
will help us all here in Colorado. Of course I don't make the rules.

I was unable to relocate the plover today between 12:15 and 12:50. The only
sure birds were avocets, spotted sandpipers and Killdeer. Also, 1
Green-winged Teal.

Steve Kingswood and I spent a couple hours at Prewitt today. It seems like
the height of fall migration for shorebirds (16 species) with an estimated
150 Stilt Sandpipers and 3 Pectoral Sandpipers. The Piping Plover was on
the dry sand close to the first area you see in the southwest end north

Dear CFO Convention attendees still in Lamar,
I'm not quite sure how to best reach my intended audience, but posting
to cobirds seems like a logical place to start.
I had several requests from people attending the CFO Convention in
Lamar, but who were unable to view Piping Plovers on the

Normally, Piping Plover broods hatch 26 days after incubation begins.
One nest was due to hatch today, but is running a little behind
schedule. One additional nest should hatch next Wednesday. It's a tough

today. Lots of species are coming in and out - disappearing after a
few hours of foraging - then replaced by new species:
American golden plover - 1
Piping plover - 1
Semi-palmated plover - 3
Baird's sandpiper - 6
I left around 5:30 and the Piping Plover was still there on the west side. Only
one Black- bellied Plover though. Willets, Sanderling, many peeps still around.

The PIPING PLOVER was still present as of 7:35pm this evening at Clover Basin
Reservoir outside of Longmont, CO. Other birds present included:
26 peeps (only able to id 8 of them based on distance)
1 Western Sandpiper

very tip of the sandspit to the east of the south marina at Chatfield
