[cobirds] Bent County -- Tempel Grove Wednesday, 9/11

2013-09-12 Thread David Gillilan
Early Wednesday morning I did some birding at Lake Hasty and the Lamar
Community College woods without finding much of note, unlike the experience I
had the day before with Duane Nelson at LCC with the numerous good birds we saw
there. I then went to Tempel Grove and birded for 3 hours in the often heavy
rain, wet thigh-high weeds, and slippery, sticky mud, starting around 10:45.
(For some unknown reason, no one else was out there birding . . . . ) The
birding started out fairly slow for the first half hour or so, but thereafter
started to pick up.

The highlights:

PHILADELPHIA VIREO (I actually believe there were two of them there together,
but I ended up focusing on only one);
Cassin's Vireo (1);
Blackpoll Warbler (1, bright fall male that had me wondering about Pine
Warbler).

Others of interest included:

Townsend's Warbler (1 male);
American Redstart (1 female);
Great-crested Flycatcher (1);
Red-bellied Woodpecker (1);
Swainson's Thrush (2);
Clay-colored Sparrow (at least 3, likely more);
Several empids, including one Traill's that I thought was most likely a
Willow Flycatcher;
Olive-sided Flycatcher (at least 2);
Warbling Vireo (1);
Rock Wren (2).

Species found in the greatest numbers out there were probably Wilson's
Warblers, low-flying Common Nighthawks, and Barn Swallows, with at least a few
dozen of each. Most of the best birds, including the 3 highlight species I
mentioned, were strung out along the first 1/2 mile or so of the eastern canal
road, which I started walking around 12:30, the rest were all in the woods on
the western side of CR 35 which I birded first. I never did walk out the west
side canal road, so don't know what, if anything, might have been out that
direction. It is also quite possible that I missed a lot of birds where I did
walk, given the challenging conditions while I was there.

[cobirds] Tricolored Heron at John Martin Reservoir

2013-09-12 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

Shortly after noon today, I found a Tricolored Heron at John Martin
Reservoir (Bent County). It was on the west end of the reservoir,
visible from Clayton Point, the peninsula that juts into the lake at the
far west end of the current lake. Access is from the north side of the
reservoir, probably best accessed by driving south off County Road JJ
just east of Road 20, and working south and east on a confusing network
of roads to the point (most roads will eventually get you there, though
none will do so directly).

This morning I went to Tempel Grove (Bent County) hoping to relocate
some of the birds reported from there yesterday by David Gillilan. No
luck with them, but I did have a new batch of migrants, including
Blue-headed Vireo, Red-eyed Vireo and American Redstart.

We have not had much rain here, and roads were dry everywhere I went
until a small but intense cell formed over Las Animas, then east to
Van's Grove between 12:30 and one this afternoon. Conditions could
change rapidly.

[cobirds] RMBO CBR banding Thursday

2013-09-12 Thread Steven Brown
Hi COBirders,

More like normal numbers today. We were closed by the wet yesterday, and today
it threatened all morning, but we had about half out nets open for most of the
morning. After seeing dozens of Wilson's Warblers in the woods and desert
brush yesterday, most were gone today. Looks like THEY departed, and others
were prevented from arriving by the heavy rain here, and to the North.

Only 20 birds banded today, about 1/2 Wilson's and Yellow Warblers, a few
Swainson's Thrush, and a few Pewees and Willow and Cordilleran Flycatchers.
What is remarkable is that there were ZERO Spizella sparrows today! Full
report to follow.

[cobirds] Warblers, Louisville, Boulder County

2013-09-12 Thread Paula Hansley
Today, when the downpour has slowed to a drizzle, I have gone out and heard
warbler chips in seemingly every tree in my neighborhood in Louisville. So
far, most have been Wilson's. Due to the poor light, I have had many
unidentified warblers (?), too.

You may not have to get in your car if you have the urge to bird today!

[cobirds] Walden Ponds, Boulder Cty., today

2013-09-12 Thread Peter Burke
COBirders,
I ventured out during the letup in the rain today...what a difference from
Sunday! Cottonwood Marsh was nearly dry on Sunday and today is full to
overflowing. The road on the west side of the wetland is completely washed
out, and water is cascading down like a miniature Niagra Falls! The
boardwalk was more than a foot under water when I left.

No shore, therefore no shorebirds at Cottonwood. But there were at least 8
Black Tern, plus many ducks including a pair of female Bufflehead. Another
surprise were approx. 9 Tree Swallows, the only non-Barn Swallows I've seen
in weeks.

A quick tour of the nearby ponds turned up mostly Killdeer and Solitary
Sandpipers, 13 SOSA by my count. There were also 2 Spotted Sandpipers, 1
Least Sandpiper and 3 fly-over Dowitchers, presumably Long-billed. I never
re-found these to get a good look. No sign of the previously reported
Pectoral Sandpipers, but I didn't check the western ponds.

There were a few warblers about, mostly Wilson's. An Eastern Phoebe,
previously reported by Ted Floyd, and a few sparrows including 2
Clay-colored. I surprised a Sharp-shinned Hawk that was too wet to flee and
instead just perched with its wings and tail spread like a cormorant trying
to dry off...like the rest of us no doubt.

Best wishes to everyone,

Peter Burke
