[cobirds] May Day in Weld

['The Nunn Guy' via Colorado Birds]

Hi all

Might be my last report probably hitting the road mid-May to VT.

CR 41 "T" intersection (CR 41 btw 100/102 at 102 left .5m and right 1m is 
the "T", 18 species seen, highlights: Lark Bunting; six sparrow species; 
Brown-headed Cowbird; Loggerhead Shrike (pair); Say's Phoebe; loads of 
Chipping Sparrows!

Lone Tree Creek at CR 110 and 108 had 12 similar species above

Crom Lake had 20 species highlights: lots of duck species, 30-40 Wilson's 
Phalarope

CR 59 Marsh had 20 species, highlights are: Whimbrel (2); Wilson's 
Phalarope (100+); Long-billed Dowitcher (20+); Marsh Wren

Hi all

Forgot the Thick-billed Longspurs (12+) along CR 45 north of CR 112 (before 
east-west telephone line) on both sides of road. Excellent weather 
conditions at 0730 ... um, until the wind appeared 0820. There was another 
birder at CR 110-area looking for longspurs, too. The boxed area below is 
probably the most reliable longspur spot for both species. CR45/122 is the 
start of annual Nunn BBS route. CR 41 (t-intersect) btw 102/100 a favorite 
for Sage and Brown Thrasher, sparrows, shrikes, orioles, Blue Grosbeak, etc

These gulls frequently can be found at Drake Lake, too, for another spot to 
check. CR 23 just south of Hwy 14 and about a mile from Weld Landfill.

[cobirds] Thank You and Almost Goodbye Colorado Birders

Hi all

We are moving to Vermont and our house in Nunn will be listed in next 
weeks. We expect a quick sale in this "hot" market. I wish I can personally 
thank many of you for your generosity and enthusiasm about birding. I 
enjoyed everyone of you who attended any trips I led up here and down in 
Colorado Springs-area. I appreciated bumping into birders in the field and 
learning something new about birding, life and yourself. I really enjoyed 
"passerbyers" and pointing out birds to them and seeing the light "turn on" 
for birding.

Ten things I'll miss about Colorado

   - Pawnee National Grassland--growing up in the most dense state in 
   America (NJ) Colorado taught me to truly appreciated and embrace living on 
   the prairie
   - Love the Colorado concert scene-especially at Red Rocks
   - Beautiful weather
   - Diversity of birds--who knew gulls existed outside a beach
   - Scenic drives in the mountains
   - Fort Collins
   - "Hiding" the last ten years of my Air Force career at the magnificent 
   U. S. Air Force Academy
   - Conservation-minded citizenry
   - Pikes Peak-in the middle of an Air Force tour in South Korea I 
   received a phone call saying my next assignment was the Air Force Academy 
   in Colorado Springs. My initial "Joisey" reaction was "what the heck is in 
   Colorado?" (thinking wild west, wagon wheels, etc ;-) ) When I stepped off 
   the plane in Colorado Springs and saw Pikes Peak I said to myself (and 
   others) "I don't have to go back to Jersey any more"
   - Plant-based protein culture and availability

Hi all

Went by Woods Lake on Saturday saw only about 8-10 Bald Eagle and six cars 
observing. Sunday morning was "boffo" I counted 30 Bald Eagle! Add 12 more 
Bald Eagle on ice at Cozzens Lake in Eaton same day.

I had seven Mountain Bluebird CR 102/37 in Nunn-area.

I had three Greater Yellowlegs at CR 41/46 private pond.

Hundreds and hundreds of gulls both days at Drake Lake loafing on partial 
ice or plowed field north of house on west-including Lesser Black-backed 
Gull. 

Plenty of and nice variety of ducks at various open waters.

Most goose flocks had Snow Goose in tow air or ground.

Waters thawing: Crom Lake, Angel Lake, Latham Reservoir, CR 48 had many wet 
areas, O St gravel pond, gravel pit across from Linn Grove Cemetery.

[cobirds] Raptor Alley (and an eagle show)/Weld

Hi all

I led the Colorado State University Field Ornithology group out on our 
annual Raptor Alley trip together on Saturday. ZERO wind again-three 
weekends in a row now! Hoping for a 4th weekend of no wind with Cheyenne 
Audubon group this Saturday. ;-)

Total of 48 raptors for our Saturday efforts:

   - Northern Harrier - 5
   - Ferruginous Hawk - 10 (includes a group of five on the ground 
   positioning themselves over a Prairie Dog kill ... cool! ... including the 
   local dark morph)
   - Bald Eagle - 9 (including all of us bearing witness to one of our 
   local pair "doing the hokey-pokey") :-)
   - Red-tailed Hawk - 8
   - Rough-legged Hawk - 6 (including local dark morph)
   - American Kestrel - 7
   - Prairie Falcon - 2

Some of us got to hear Lapland Longspur flyover treat.

This past Saturday led a trip on another gorgeous raptor weather day-NO 
WIND. We only did eastern and southern portions of Raptor Alley 
.
 
We saw 33 raptors.

   - Ferruginous Hawk - 7 (dark morph, too, in usual spot)
   - Red-tailed Hawk - 8
   - Rough-legged Hawk - 5  (dark morph, too, in usual spot)
   - Golden Eagle - 1
   - American Kestrel - 8
   - Bald Eagle - 3
   - Northern Harrier - 1

"Shurview/Missile Site Bluffs Open Space, $1,500,000 to The Trust for 
Public Land 

The grant will help the Trust for Public Land, the City of Greeley, and the 
Town of Windsor conserve the 978-acre Shurview/Missile Site Bluffs 
property, located between Windsor and Greeley along Highway 257 in Weld 
County. This property is the last remaining large parcel of land with 
significant conservation value along this corridor, providing a buffer and 
scenic views for the communities. It houses a range of wildlife species and 
also plays an important role in managing storm water and irrigation runoff 
and preventing soil erosion. The Shurview acquisition is expected to close 
in March 2022."

[cobirds] Common Redpoll on Greeley CBC/Weld

Hi all

Yesterday I covered the southwest section of Greeley CBC. Along CR 396 SW 
out of Lasalle I was treated to seven Common Redpoll which allowed closeup 
photos. They were feeding on wild sunflower heads alongside road. Pretty 
cold on CBC but sun brought out birds. This area seems prime birding 
habitat, I have not really birded this area previously ... South Platte 
River, multiple streams with roads paralleling.

We did the Pawnee Buttes CBC count yesterday (instead of this Friday) due 
to inclement weather approaching Fri-Sun and not so friendly bird winds 
projected on Friday. Weather was great yesterday, sunny, winds only 3-10 
mph and a might chilly to start 12 degrees warming to upper 20s as hours 
passed. Species and count # totals similar to first run of circle last year.

We did the Pawnee-East (Stoneham) count on Xmas eve day. Weather was okay, 
winds probably 10-15+ at times.

Species counted:

   - Rough-legged Hawk
   - Lapland Longspur - 54 (good spot is CR 102 west of Hwy 71. There are 
   alternating tilled dirt field and shorter grass field lanes. Horned Lark 
   and Lapland Longspur were coming to road together frequently. CR 102 bends 
   north where I had them on both sides of road.)

   - European Starling

Woods Lake Saturday hosted a "ginormous" Snow Goose flock that numbered in 
the multiple thousands. It was an impressive sight to see.

Speaking of Northern Shrike ... one continues to bathe and drink in our 11 
water sources and also hunts our feeder birds. Has been making appearances 
off and on for about month now. She also was hunting in one of our window 
wells other morning.

[cobirds] Lapland Longspur/Weld

Hi all

Two Lapland Longspur in tow with about two dozen Horned Lark on the exposed 
shoreline of CR 61/74 Galeton Ponds (south one). Also, Northern Shrike 
along South Platter river at CR 61 crossing--Rough-legged Hawk in that area 
last weekend.

The Hwy 34/CR 69 energy development pond continues to host a very large 
flock of Canada and Snow Goose--and watchful Bald Eagle.

Saw my first Hooded Merganser of winter at Windsor's Kyger Open 
Space--other ducks present, too. Windsor Lake had its usual California, 
Ring-billed and Herring Gull representation-and lingering American White 
Pelican (as did Woods Lake along with few Double-crested Cormorant).

All waters ice-free (of course). :-)

Yard has four piles of Eurasian-collared Dove feathers--accipiters must be 
visiting). Downy Woodpecker dropped by yesterday afternoon.

[cobirds] Raptor Alley Trip #1 Results/Weld

Hi all

Hearty souls braved the 15-25 mph winds on Saturday--I woke up to 5mph 
winds but that quickly changed in an hour or so. Need less to say raptor 
numbers low but got variety!

   - Red-tailed Hawk - 5
   - Ferruginous Hawk - 3
   - Bald Eagle - 3
   - Unk raptor - 1 (distance)
   - Prairie Falcon - 2 (one seen on way to meet team, second on way home 
   after trip)
   - Merlin - 1 (greeted me in my driveway as I returned home)

Others: Northern Shrike, ton of ducks (Crom Lake, mostly Mallard, 
Bufflehead, Northern Shoveler), Canada and Cackling Goose, Pronghorn

[cobirds] Very Large Snow Goose Flock Expands/Weld

Hi all
I visited the CR 69/Hwy 34 energy development pond again on Saturday. Took 
a series of 16 photos of entire flock--guesstimate ~1,500-2,000 Snow Goose 
present! Zoomed in on photos did a head count on all 16 photos. Photos at 
link below. Bald Eagle patiently eyeballing the flock, too.

I did Raptor Alley (bottom half) on Sunday in preparation for this 
Saturday's trip:

   - Sharp-shinned Hawk (chasing 3 Northern Flicker and Black-billed Magpie)
   - Rough-legged Hawk (first time this fall)
   - Bald Eagle - 4
   - Ferruginous Hawk - 4 (dark morph has returned to usual winter area)
   - Red-tailed Hawk - 5
   - American Kestrel
   - Golden Eagle
   - Prairie Falcon
   - Northern Harrier

Others: Northern Shrike (2), one chasing American Tree Sparrow (6) flock; 
Common Raven (2)

On routine morning walk along CR 100 and CR 33 had 4 Lapland Longspur 
flyover and then farther down road another smaller group of 2.

The walk starts on CR 100 .25m east of CR 33 and then south on CR 33 for 
about .5m. There is large prairie dog colony on both sides of road which 
attracts them each winter.

Hi all

"New" Weld County pond (energy development pond) for me ... CR 69 and Hwy 
34 east of CR 59 marsh turnoff about five miles on north. Turn north on CR 
69 go about .25m to top of rise for best views. Need scope. Seems to 
attract lots of geese, ducks and maybe gulls(?). Here I counted 395+ Snow 
Goose on Saturday.

Hi all

On Sunday at Windsor Reservoir overlook had a "zillion" gulls loafing on 
the exposed bottoms-water is very low.

   - Lesser Black-backed Gull 5-7 all adults
   - Multiple Herring Gull
   - Multiple California Gull
   - Loads of Ring-billed Gull

At Cozzens Lake had about 30 Long-billed Dowitcher. 

Small flock of Greater Yellowlegs at CR 59 marsh. Loloff had dowitchers and 
yellowlegs.

Cozzens Lake had hunters in blind (NE corner of lake) as did CR 61/74 pond 
(south) in Galeton-no birds.

In the yard seven Common Grackle appeared all day-had not seen them in 
months.

[cobirds] Foothills Audubon PNG Trip and Sandhill Cranes!/Weld

Hi all

Fantastic day for our Pawnee trip on Saturday with Foothills Audubon club. 
We tallied a total of 56 species roaming from Nunn to CR 124 Pond to Crow 
Valley Campground.

Highlights include:

   - Spotted Towhee (my yard)
   - Cooper's Hawk (Lone Tree Creek @ CR 110)
   - Say's Phoebe, Great Horned Owl, Lapland Longspur, Rock Wren, Sage 
   Thrasher, House Wren, Blue Grosbeak and Clay-colored Sparrow (CR 
   41/102-area)
   - Prairie Falcon (3) and Peregrine Falcon (CR 124)
   - American Pipit (CR 124 Pond)
   - Townsend's Solitaire, Hairy Woodpecker and unknown thermal soaring 
   raptor-speculate one of the two Broad-winged Hawk seen earlier in week here)

Rest of birds: Bluejay, White-crowned Sparrow, House Sparrow, 
Eurasian-collared Dove, European Starling, Western Meadowlark, Horned Lark, 
House Finch, Rock Pigeon, Mallard, American Kestrel, Red-tailed Hawk, 
Northern Flicker, Wilson's Warbler, Northern Harrier, American Goldfinch, 
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Vesper Sparrow, Ferruginous Hawk, Brewer's Sparrow, 
Mourning Dove, Barn Swallow, Western Wood-Pewee, Swainson's Hawk, Canada 
Goose, American White Pelican, Greater Yellowlegs, Red-winged Blackbird, 
Wilson's Snipe, Killdeer, Green-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, American 
Coot, Baird's Sandpiper, Long-billed Dowitcher, American Avocet, Gadwall, 
Geat Blue Heron, Double-crested Cormorant, and Downy Woodpecker.

[cobirds] Galeton Shorebirds/Weld

Hi all

Galeton ponds (CR 74/61) regular stop for me on weekends. Saturday, 
scouting hunters present, no birds.

Sunday, still getting ID confirmations but pretty sure Pectoral, Baird's, 
Stilt, Solitary and "maybe" Sanderling(?) sandpipers along with both 
yellowlegs, avocet, Black-necked Stilt, Killdeer, Wilson's Phalarope, and 
usual gang of Franklin's Gull. What lacked in quantity made up in 
diversity, hopefully. ;-)

[cobirds] Shorebird Welcome Sign Out/Weld

Hi all

Wandering around Weld County this weekend ...

Just now a Red-breasted Nuthatch appeared in our yard for probably the 
second or third time in our 20 years here. We had Wilson's Warbler (2) here 
on Saturday being chased by two Loggerhead Shrike during the morning--no 
kills recorded as far as we know. :-)

13 Cattle Egret at CR 41/46 pond area east of Stewart's Pond yesterday.

Saturday ...

   - Windsor Lake had two Forster's Tern
   - Windsor Reservoir had 2-3 Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs
   - Woods Lake Snowy and Great Egret
   - Cozzens Lake is open for shorebird business flock of 60-80 shorebirds 
   including Wilson's Phalarope, Baird's, Solitary, Stilt, and Pectoral 
   Sandpiper, Semipalmated Plover, Long-billed Dowitcher, both yellowlegs, 
   other birds still needing ID. 193 American White Pelican loafing.
   - Galeton Ponds at CR 61/74 is open for shorebird business. 169 
   Franklin's Gull. Black-necked Stilt, Long-billed Dowitcher, Greater 
   Yellowlegs, Semipalmated and Baird's Sandpiper.
   - CR 59 marsh ducks only
   - Loloff Reservoir saw it was full of birds did not have time to scan.
   
Sunday ...

   - Trip toward CR 124 pond had Vesper, Lark, Brewer's and Chipping 
   Sparrow, Lark Bunting (only a few as compared to two weekends ago (100s and 
   100s)), Say's Phoebe, Western Wood-Pewee (6), Loggerhead Shrike, Sage 
   Thrasher and expected raptors.
   - 124 pond is open for shorebird business ... Greater Yellowlegs, Black 
   Tern (3) and a few yet to be IDed "peeps".

In Vermont last week I got lifer Scarlet Tanager at our hotel. Also, Cedar 
Waxwing there are like House Sparrow here ... all over.

Highlights from weekend. Crom Lake got its fall ration--so full again. CR 
84/31 marsh and Crom Lake both had calling Sora. CR 74/61 ponds have not 
gone down yet. CR 124 pond excellent for shorebirds now as is CR 116/Hwy 77 
playa, CR 122/Hwy 77 playa, and CR 59 marsh. Loloff Reservoir had some 
birds but CR 59 far better last few weekends. Did not get to Stewart's Pond 
but last few trips still full-looking.

CR 102/41-area had:

   - Sage Thrasher - 2
   
CR 55 north of 108 about mile or so flooded field had:

   - Baird's Sandpiper - 16
   - Killdeer - 9

CR 108, east of CR 55, flooded field had:

   - Solitary Sandpiper - 5+
   - Baird's Sandpiper - 12
   - Killdeer - 37

CR 124 pond had:

   - Wilson's Snipe
   - Sora
   - Greater Yellowlegs - 9
   - Solitary Sandpiper - 3
   - Spotted Sandpiper - 2
   - Great-tailed grackle
   - Bank Swallow - 14

CPER has loads of Lark Bunting, Grasshopper Sparrow, saw quite a few Common 
Nighthawk airborne, on fenceposts and on telephone wires.

I'll post photos probably tomorrow.

Hi all

While browsing my weekend photos I was looking at a Burrowing Owl one and 
"low and behold" in the field puddle is a Black-bellied Plover! Owl colony 
is about two miles east of the Galeton Ponds at CR 74/61, passed CR 65 
along CR 74 on the south--adjacent to a small farm op. At base of a small 
rise in 74, trucks use this road a lot so be extra careful. If bird is not 
there could be at CR 74/61 ponds or any of the other nearby ponds. I missed 
the plover because I was focused on getting owl pic and "not being run over 
by a truck." :-)

Hi all

I've never had anyone approach me on CR 57-even with folks out in their 
yards. I typically park before the closed off oil and gas small parcel 
("birding trailhead") before the first house on east side of CR 57 and 
across from first house on west side of CR 57. I also view the north end of 
Loloff Reservoir farther north of the house on east.

I've never been on the oil and gas road on east side of Loloff Reservoir 
myself.

[cobirds] Weld County Birding Weekend

['The Nunn Guy' via Colorado Birds]

Hi all

My birding travels over the weekend ...

Saturday:

   - Sage Thrasher - 4 (along 41 btw 100/102. good spot to find them during 
   migrations (looked like a family unit, too). Also, loads of Lark Bunting, 
   some Grasshopper, Brewer's and Cassin's Sparrow, Bullock's Oriole, Northern 
   Mockingbird and Great Horned Owl who typically roosts under either bridge)
   - McCown's Longspur - 20+ (about 1-2 miles south of 122/45 (on 45). lots 
   of youngsters on road)
   - CR 124 Pond drawing down. Usual ducks and Greater Yellowlegs. 77/122 
   playa has water (only geese and mallards) and CR116/77 playa has water 
   (full)-no birds
   - Burrowing Owls persist at CR 33 (E) btw 98/100; CR 59/74 (NW); and new 
   CR 74 about 2 miles past 61 on south (on west side of small dairy operation)

Sunday:

   - Crom Lake starting to draw down (geese, mallards)
   - CR 84/31 marsh had 100s of Cliff Swallow and two Bank Swallow plus 54 
   Yellow-headed Blackbird group feeding in mowed grass on north
   - CR 59 marsh hosted Baird's, Semipalmated, and Spotted Sandpiper, many 
   Wilson's Phalarope
   - Loloff Reservoir hosted 50-60 avocet, 20-30 phalarope and 250--300+ 
   Franklin's Gull. The former oil and gas pad "trailhead overlook" parking 
   area is now fenced off, too. Along CR 57.
   - Windsor Lake had two+ Forster's Tern
   - Woods Lake had gulls (Franklin's and RIng-billeds), both egrets and a 
   Great Horned Owl sitting out in the open watching the gulls and ducks
   - Two Mute Swan ("wild" ones that can fly :-) )

First, CPER is chockful of wet spots from last week's 2.5 inch rain deluge. 
Birds seen or heard at these wet areas include: Black-necked Stilt, Greater 
Yellowlegs, Killdeer, Mallard, Lark Bunting, both longspurs, Brewer's, 
Grasshopper and Lark Sparrow, Red-tailed, Swainson's and Ferruginous Hawk, 
Horned Lark, Western Meadowlark, Pronghorn and Coyote. Water route is 
starting from CR 37/114 follow 114 east as you approach 45 you'll see 
various waters, continue east past 49 to 53 to 108 to 49 to 102 ending .5m

Dickcissel (1) at Lone Tree Creek CR 110/85 crossing. Photos:

Greater (5) and Lesser Yellowlegs (1), Wilson's Phalarope, Black-necked 
Stilt (18) and Stilt Sandpiper (1) at CR 59 marsh.

Seven Burrowing Owl at CR 33 btw 98/100 dog colony. Park just sout of red 
storage container on east. Look down the north goat yard fence line to end. 
Look at about 20 yards north of the fence for burrow. Adults usually on 
goat fence line.

Nine Burrowing Owl at CR 59/74 NW dog colony. Go north on CR 59 to just 
past the red metal corner post in middle of colony. Burrow just west of it, 
adults usually hanging out on ground nearby. Continue north to east-west 
fence line on west. There is a singular taller post in dog colony that 
adult frequents--burrow is just south of the post.

I did my route June 10th.  Reported 39 species with big miss being 
Loggerhead Shrike--they are around just did not see on route that day.

Average species count through the years is 38. Last five-year average is 48.

[cobirds] New Nunn-area Arrivals/Weld

Hi all

Northern Mockingbird showed in yard this morning singing up a storm. 
Western Wood-Pewee yesterday. Blue Grosbeak at local "grassland bird haven" 
in and around CR 102/100/41-area. The gravel pit trees at CR 94/37 are 
noisy with usual breeding birds--sometimes you can get three oriole species 
here :-)

Most non-breeding shorebirds have since moved on for the most part.

I was out mowing our landscaped backyard habitat starting with western 
half. As I moved to begin mowing eastern side a Long-eared Owl flew out by 
me from one of our trees at eye-level to continue roosting in our western 
windbreak. It remained there until dark. I believe our third one in being 
up here. Pretty cool.

   - Green-tailed Towhee - 1
   - Brown Thrasher - 1

Elsewhere in Weld County ...

   - Large group of assorted gulls loafing in field flood across from Weld

[cobirds] Snow Goose/Weld

['The Nunn Guy' via Colorado Birds]

Hi all

CR 108 playa (water first time in years) hosting eight sleeping Snow Goose, 
Northern Pintail, Mallard, Blue-winged Teal, dozens of Lark Bunting 
displaying, Chipping, Brewer's and Lark Sparrow. CR 33 about one-mile south 
has nice playa as well and is even flooding half the road with similar 
waterfowl. Lone Tree Creek at CR 110 best bird was Brown Thrasher pair. CR 
37 has large playa to east about one mile north of CR 108 on west--water 
has not been here in years as well.

One observation I did not mention previously is how green the Pawnee NG is 
and the many playas, depressions, streams, etc. where water is being seen 
that has not been seen in years! It is beautiful out there. Not to mention 
we saw some blooming flowers, too, anticipate many more displaying in 
coming weeks with all this moisture.

I wonder if answer is as simple (of complex) as maybe migrating birds 
simply not stopping in Colorado, drought, loss of habitat in Colorado, 
taking different paths, weather challenges, lack of food sources, other???

Also, a study  (2019) 
released in the journal *Nature Climate Change* suggests "that rising 
temperatures are causing birds to migrate a little earlier each spring. It 
finds that the journey home is shifting forward by a little less than two 
days each decade. The researchers, led by Kyle Horton of Colorado State 
University, analyzed millions of radar scans collected between 1995 and 
2018. They used a high-tech method to differentiate between migrating birds 
and weather systems—a special type of artificial intelligence known as a 
neural network. Neural networks rely on complex sets of algorithms and can 
be trained to recognize patterns in data."

Sort of suggests we should be seeing migrating birds earlier than 
anticipated.

More intel from WhatBird forum from Tony L. " YELLOW-FOOTED GULL can be 
easily ruled out by the relatively narrow tertial crescents on this bird

[cobirds] Weld County Over the Weekend

Hi all

Scouted usual Weld sites (no grasslands this time) in preparation for 
Colorado Birding Challenge. Total of 80 species seen, highlights (includes 
"new" not seen last weekend) were:

   - Loggerhead Shrike (CR 110/27)
   - Golden Eagle (CR 112/27)
   - Vesper Sparrow - 7 (CR 108 btw 27/Hwy 85)
   - Willet - 3 (1-Crom Lake, 2-CR 59 Marsh)
   - Barn Swallow - 6 (Crom Lake)
   - Tree Swallow - 3 (Crom Lake)
   - "Yellow-footed Gull" UNID (Weld County Landfill, Hwy 14)
   - Clark's Grebe (Woods Lake)
   - Black-crowned Night Heron - 3 (Glenmere Park)
   - Marsh Wren (CR 59 Marsh)
   - Burrowing Owl - 3 (1-CR 98 btw 33/37, closer to 37) on north; 2-CR 
   57/74 NW corner; mile west of Galeton Ponds (CR 61/74)
   - Snow Goose 25 (24-Loloff Reservoir; 1-CR 61/74 (Galeton Pond))
   - Wood Duck - 4 (2 pair) (Cozzens Lake)
   - Ring-necked Pheasant (Loloff Reservoir)
   - Brown-headed Cowbird - 2 (Pair) (CR 45/42)
   - Great Egret (CR 47 on west at irrigation pond btw CR 40-46)
   - Marbled Godwit (Crom Lake)
   - Dark-eyed Junco (Yard)

Had a flock of 20+ Least Sandpiper (seen species last week) this weekend at 
CR 59 marsh.

[cobirds] More Curlews/Larimer

Hi all

Just saw 40+ Long-billed Curlew at Wellington State Wildlife Area (Larimer 
CR 64) on way back from Fort Collins lunch. From I-25 go east on Larimer CR 
64 about .25m east in field between first house on north and to the west of 
the two houses next to each on north (one has fake Giraffe in front yard).

Hi all

I'd like to ask about access to Stewart's Pond. I've heard from and seen 
multiple occasions folks and cars beyond the corral area to view Stewart's 
Pond. Does anyone have the definitive answer that the landowner is okay 
with birders on their property? Each time I go near I'm hoping to see 
someone working there to ask and confirm for myself we have permission.

approaching. Our team name is "Friends of the Pawnee National Grassland" 
and we'll be scouring Weld County birds for the event. I went out this 
weekend to scout birds (and locations) in area. I got 77 species with 
highlights being:

   - Tundra/Trumpeter Swan - 2 (Loloff Reservoir)--loaded more photos to 
   help with ID
   - Long-billed Curlew - 15 (Antelope Reservoir) present Sat and Sun. As 
   you approach Antelope Reservoir from the south on CR 37, just before CR 92 
   easterly turn, they are on west side of CR 37 in field
   - Forster's Tern - 5 (Kyger Open Space)
   - Mysterious "white or pale-looking, large gull" (*need ID help*,* see 
   photos below*) (Kyger Open Space)
   - Swainson's Hawk - 3 (Beebe Draw, as usual one atop "Swainson's Hawk 
   telephone pole" at CR 42/47 :-) )
   - Sage Thrasher singing up a storm on CR 41 btw 100/102 (video on 
   homepage below)

[cobirds] Windsor Birds and Mink!/Weld

Hi all

Yesterday I had two Bonaparte's Gull in the gravel pit on south at 
Weld/Larimer County line along Hwy 392 across from the gardening/brewery 
store on north. Also, at gravel pit on south at 17th and Hwy 392 (about a 
half-mile east of above) had 37 Red-breasted Mergansers in their fine glory!

I had a Mink at Drake Lake scurry out the cattails right in front of me, 
crossing the road, taking a swim on east pond and back up on shore again. 
Pretty neat.

Yellow-headed Blackbird now present at most water stops I did.

There were a ton of gulls on NE shore of Windsor Reservoir across from the 
new overlook in the residential area on east side of reservoir.

I'll have photos posted tomorrow sometime.

Toured Weld over weekend as usual ... total of 63 species. Highlights:

   - Thick-billed Longspur - 7+ .5 south of CR 114/45 on both side of road 
   but mostly west. Turn off your car. Listen and watch. Easy to hear flying 
   around and singing. I stayed on road whole time but you could walk out 
   there to find, too
   - Loggerhead Shrike CR 102
   - Sharp-shinned Hawk - 2 out in the open. CR 110 Lone Tree Creek 
   crossing and Drake Lake
   - Black-necked Stilt - 2 Crom Lake
   - Long-billed Dowitcher Crom Lake
   - Herring Gull Crom Lake (first time I have seen one there)
   - Sora CR 84/31 marsh (west of)
   - Great-tailed Grackle - 4 CR 124 pond, first time I have seen them there
   - Horned Grebe Windsor Lake (empty of birds)
   - American Avocet Stwerat's Pond
   - Baird's Sandpiper Stewart's Pond
   - Mourning Dove - 3 (first time this spring)
   - Rough-legged Hawk CR 124
   - Sandhill Crane - 70 flyover Cozzens Lake

later today.

[cobirds] Potential New Weld County Birding Spot

Hi all
in my Weld County excursions of late I stumbled upon two bike path 
crossings I had never seen before. Did a search today and the trail is 
newly named "The Great Western Trail" (http://www.gwtrail.com/). It 
traverses Windsor-Severance-Eaton ag fields. But it does show access to a 
Roulard Lake (looks to be series of small ponds) north of Woods Lake.
I'll have to give it a visit one weekend.

Over the weekend ...happy to report the Varied Thrush

first 3 photos) in Nunn persists even after our massive blizzard conditions 
up here.

Massive gull flock (up close) on south side of Hwy 14 
(http://www.friendsofthepawneegrassland.org/albums/view/185/landfill-weld, 
first 20 or so photos) across from Weld Landfill in flooded fields from 
snow melting. Have not looked closely at photos yet. Saw Lesser 
Black-backed (ad.), Herring, California, and Ring-billed Gull for sure.

Latham Reservoir marsh and Beebe Draw 
(http://www.friendsofthepawneegrassland.org/albums/view/16/weld-cr-48-and-beebe-draw-la-salle,
 
first 15 or so photos) have lots of flooded fields. Ducks and gulls only so 
far.

Weld CR 59 marsh

first five or so photos) and Loloff Reservoir full of ducks, some geese.

Stewart's Pond and CR 41 ponds are open for business and the small pond on 
south is slowly refilling with water-still a nice mud flat though.

Greater Yellowlegs and American White Pelican at Weld CR 41 ponds. I could 
hear tons of geese cackling on Behrens Reservoir.

This morning on way into Fort Collins along Weld CR 100 btw Nunn and 
Wellington had Merlin, Golden Eagle, American Kestrel, Red-tailed Hawk and 
Ferruginous Hawk.

Various regular visiting birds

[cobirds] In Search of Spring .../Weld

['The Nunn Guy' via Colorado Birds]

Hi all

Explored a lot of north central Weld over weekend hoping to find signs of 
spring. I did. Still only Horned Larks and raptors on shortgrass, no summer 
longspurs seen/heard. Other item of interest is new wooden double-post 
power-lines going in along Hwy 77 on east in and around CR 116 Playa-new 
raptor perches at least.

Most waters open and fully occupied in most instances.

   - CR 124/122 ponds (open and full) geese and ducks
   - Cozzens Lake (open) tons of geese
   - Stewart's Lake (open) geese and ducks
   - Latham Reservoir (partial) geese and ducks
   - CR 48 marsh has flooded fields (no birds)
   - Crom Lake (open) geese and ducks)
   - CR 61/74 Ponds frozen
   - CR 40 marsh-area on north is new large burn scar (looks like a local 
   burn by the shape)
   - CR 59 and Loloff Reservoir (partial)

Spring birds seen ...

   - Greater Yellowlegs - 1 (CR 59 Marsh)
   - Killdeer - 1 (CR 59 Marsh)
   - American White Pelican - 20+ (Cozzens Lake)
   - Mountain Bluebird - 12+ (several CPER roads north of Nunn)
   - Double-crested Cormorant - 20+ [Hwy 392 Pond [Galeton]--full of birds!]
   - 13 expected duck species

Other notable birds ...

   - Gray-crowned Rosy Finch - 18+ (CR 128)
   - Greater White-fronted Goose - 1 (Crom Lake)
   - Northern Shrike -1 (Briggsdale Work Center)

[cobirds] Raptor Alley with CSU Ornith. Club Results/Weld

Hi all
My first trip lead during this crazy pandemic. Fantastic weather ... 0mph 
winds and 18-35 degrees for trip. COVID safety precautions applied. We saw 
a total of 50 raptors along with Lapland Longspurs, Pronghorn, and Coyote.

   - Bald Eagle - 5
   - Red-tailed Hawk - 9
   - American Kestrel - 7
   - Ferruginous Hawk - 7
   - Prairie Falcon - 1
   - Golden Eagle - 2
   - Northern Harrier - 6
   - Rough-legged Hawk - 8
   - Great Horned Owl - 1
   - UNID species - 2
   - Merlin - 1
   - Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1

Laplands seen/heard along 31, 108, 37 and 98 in Nunn-area.

[cobirds] Lapland Longspur

 Hi all

Frigid birding over the weekend to say the least! 

Sunday on Weld CR 94 between 33/35 south of gun shooting range had 3-4 
Lapland Lonspur hanging out with the Horned Lark in fallow fields.

All Greeley-area lakes frozen over except Saturday Woods Lake had a lsiver 
open chockful of geese. Saw many Bald Eagle in area and on ice eating 
Canada and/or Cackling Goose. The Linn Grove Gravel Pit was open and full 
of usual geese and ducks.

The most astonishing cold weather event was yesterday ... how does a 
"quarter million" geese in Greeley vanish? :-) Yesterday I saw only 3 geese 
in my usual travels where I normally see "throngs" of them on the ground, 
on water, on ice or in the air.
