When I try to access the starter link
"http://localhost:8080/cocoon/documents/index.html"; I receive this exception

There have been a lot of threads about this. Check out the archive.
If you don't use X you must use xvfb or pja because FOP and Batic need a
graphical screen to write on.

There seems to be difficulties with Tomcat 4.02 - You might want to try
4.01.

I used the same configuration and got the same error. Then I downgraded
to tomcat 4.0.2-b2 and everything works fine.
