[jira] [Commented] (CASSANDRA-15009) In-JVM Testing tooling for paging

2019-02-11 Thread Jon Meredith (JIRA)

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-15009?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=16765498#comment-16765498
 ]

Jon Meredith commented on CASSANDRA-15009:
--

I had a look at the latest state of branches, and the fix to prevent the
executeInternal call looks good. The only minor question I had was whether
currentPage should be explicitly initialized to null in the anonymous
{{AbstractIterator}} returned by {{FromDistributedQuery.iterator}}? The
implicit default of null is obviously fine, but I'm not sure what the
conventions are for the project or if static analysis tools get upset by that
kind of thing.

Will be interesting how the remaining dtests complete.

[jira] [Commented] (CASSANDRA-15014) Unit tests failure on trunk

2019-02-11 Thread Joseph Lynch (JIRA)

Joseph Lynch commented on CASSANDRA-15014:
--

Heads up that non trunk links are missing the cassandra before the branch name
(e.g.
https://github.com/apache/cassandra/compare/2.2...ifesdjeen:CASSANDRA-15014-2.2
instead of
https://github.com/apache/cassandra/compare/cassandra-2.2...ifesdjeen:CASSANDRA-15014-2.2).
 Working on review now.

svn commit: r1853412 - in /cassandra/site: publish/download/index.html publish/index.html src/README src/_data/releases.yaml src/_data/urls.yaml

2019-02-11 Thread mshuler
Author: mshuler
Date: Tue Feb 12 02:16:15 2019
New Revision: 1853412

URL: http://svn.apache.org/viewvc?rev=1853412&view=rev
Log:
Update versions; correct build steps in README

A simple update of the release versions should not need the following
additional subversion commands after running `make` to restore all the
unexpected removals and additions:

svn revert --recursive publish/doc
svn revert --recursive publish/blog
rm -r publish/blog/2018/08/06
rm -r publish/blog/2018/08/20 # where did these "new" posts even come from?
rm -r src/.sass-cache

If someone wants to build new doc versions, please go ahead. I thought there
was a docker setup to build the site, but I cannot find it, and just updating
versions makes me want to pull my fingernails out.

There used to be a publish/.htaccess redirect file for the debian repository,
but evidently that was removed without reverting the unexpected change, so now
it's gone. I think the repository is still working right from some quick tests.

bq. were the extra commits an attempt to get that passing?

Yes, I'll commit them as a part of a different issue; sorry for the noise. I
should've branched them out.

bq. I'm assuming toObjectArray is useful in other tests

I left it mostly for debugging purposes. Sometimes when you just want to
println it, it might come handy.

bq. ...use compose, rather than deserialize...

Good point! I'll make a change accordingly.

Regarding test failures, they're now tackled in [CASSANDRA-15014]. I've
separated commits.

I've also modified the 3.0, 3.11 and trunk patches a bit to make sure that
distributed queries are covered. Previous patch was calling {{executeInternal}}
under the hood, which is not the right execution path.

In summary, there was a problem with retention resulting from schema change:
since it was executed on the main thread, we were retaining a bunch of thread
locals. Attaching a screenshot showing that we retain mere 12mb after full test
run.

I did test it on several environments and it seems that circleci is still
timing out because of GC pressure. I've decided to simplify runs and just have
each test executing in its own JVM to avoid GC contention alltogether.

I've also added an ant task to conveniently run distributed tests without test
list and have improved a shutdown process.

[jira] [Comment Edited] (CASSANDRA-15014) Unit tests failure on trunk

Alex Petrov edited comment on CASSANDRA-15014 at 2/11/19 2:44 PM:

In summary, there was a problem with retention resulting from schema change:
since it was executed on the main thread, we were retaining a bunch of thread
locals. Attaching a screenshot showing that we retain mere 12mb after full test
run.

I did test it on several environments and it seems that circleci is still
timing out because of GC pressure. I've decided to simplify runs and just have
each test executing in its own JVM to avoid GC contention alltogether.

I've also added an ant task to conveniently run distributed tests without test
list and have improved a shutdown process.

[jira] [Commented] (CASSANDRA-14983) Local reads potentially blocking remote reads

Marcus Olsson commented on CASSANDRA-14983:
---

Great, I can create the patches for 3.0, 3.11 and 4.0 and also a separate
ticket for the SEP executor. I can also try to write an in-jvm dtest, I haven't
really tried it out yet so it will be interesting to see how it works.

> Based on the comment
> {code:java}
> // We delay the local (potentially blocking) read till the end to avoid
> stalling remote requests.
> {code}
> it seems like this should be performed last in the chain to avoid blocking
> remote requests but that does not seem to be the case when the local request
> is a data request. The digest request(s) are sent after the data requests are
> sent (and now the transient replica requests as well). When the fast path is
> used for local data/transient data requests this will block the next type of
> request from being sent away until the local read is finished and add
> additional latency to the request.
> In addition to this it seems like local requests are *always* data requests
> (might not be a problem), but the log message can say either ["digest" or

> as the type of request.
> I have tried to run performance measurements to see the impact of this in 3.0
> (by moving local requests to the end of ARE#executeAsync()) but I haven't
> seen any big difference yet. I'll continue to run some more tests to see if I
> can find a use case affected by this.
> Attaching a trace (3.0) where this happens. Reproduction:
> # Create a three node CCM cluster
> # Provision data with stress (rf=3)
> # In parallel:
> ## Start stress read run
> ## Run multiple manual read queries in cqlsh with tracing on and
> local_quorum (as this does not always happen)

[jira] [Commented] (CASSANDRA-14395) C* Management process

2019-02-11 Thread Jason Brown (JIRA)

Jason Brown commented on CASSANDRA-14395:
-

I've taken a decent look through [~djoshi3]'s first patch, and on the whole, I
think this is a good first step for this project. I'm not digging too far into
nit picking at this early stage as I feel it's more important to make forward
progress overall rather than get tripped up over minor points.

general comments:

- I'm passing over the gradle scripts for now, in lieu of reviewing everything
else first
- do we need a lib directly with checked in jars, esp with a gradle/mvn style
build files that pulls jars from mavenCentral?
- need a script to run the app from the command line :) I was able to use
\{{gradlew run}} to see it work.

code comments
- Configuration - let's add comments to make it easier to distinguish between
\{{getCassandraPort}} and \{{getPort}}; maybe update the method names, as well.
I needed to read the \{{MainModule::configuration()}} to figure what each
method acttually represented.
- in general, I think we want to execute scheduled tasks with
\{{scheduleWithFixedDelay()}} rather than \{{scheduleAtFixedRate()}}. This way
tasks don't end up piling up on top of each other if one takes a looong time to
execute.
- there a couple of nit picky things where an instance's final fields are in
caps, like a constant. trivial at this point.

The only thing I'm not entirely thrilled with is how each URL/handler will need
to be explicitly wired into the \{{router}} in
\{{CassandraSidecarDaemon::start()}}. I'm not sure if there's further guice
magick that can mitigate this. However, I don't feel this is a huge problem for
the usefulness project as a whole, nor do I think we need to tackle it in the
early stages or anytime soon.

Looking forward to more activity on this ticket.

Thanks, [~jasobrown]. I have made the following changs -
 # Added comments to {{Configuration}}
 # Switched to {{scheduleWithFixedDelay}}
 # Updated the naming of fields & constants
 # The Guice module now installs the routes instead of the start method.

Regarding other comments,
 # Running {{gradle distTar}} creates the distribution with the start script
and jars bundled in.
 # I had to check in jolokia as I couldn't find a great way to get it included
in the distro using gradle. I think [~vinaykumarcse] has a way of doing it and
can send it part of the follow on PR.
