After removing the battery for several minutes the device
automatically boots when the battery is replaced.  By the time I've
turned the device around after replacing the back cover the openmoko
logo is already displayed.  (The device was not connected to any
 computer.)

So I've shut the device down again by pressing the power button for
 several seconds.

Without removing the battery but waiting some 30 seconds:
 1) press and hold AUX
 2) press and hold power
after about 4 seconds the AUX button lights up, about 2 seconds later
the openmoko logo is displayed and after that the device boots
I released both buttons as soon as the openmoko logo was displayed.

 Again power down the device
 1) press and hold power
 2) press (and hold) AUX approx 2 seconds after pressing power before
 the openmoko logo is displayed

again the device boots without displaying any kind of boot menu

Is it possible to reconfigure the wait time of the boot menu via the
device?  I can't find anything in the settings menu or any terminal
application that would allow me to execute commands.

 Bram

Maybe someone else will have a brighter idea, but all I can suggest at
this point is unplug, remove battery, then hold down AUX while
inserting battery.  If that doesn't work, but it just boots right up
instead, then try to confirm that the AUX button is functional, as I'm
starting to suspect a bum button.  If that's the case I've no idea what
 solution is feasible.

 j

Any idea how to test the AUX button?  During one of my tests keeping
the AUX button pressed longer than usual the screen was displayed
rotated 90 degrees.  So at least it had some effect.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find much documentation of the
applications installed so I can't tell if any of them should react to
the AUX button being pressed.

I'll try keeping the AUX button pressed while inserting the battery later.

And maybe another icon to notify unread sms, instead of see the unread

So far this program has checked 5100 files in 12 minutes, and downloaded
 260. It looks like it will get through all my 50.000 tiles in under 2 hours.
I use wifi, the usb connection may be slower.

If anyone want to try, here is the download link.
 http://www.aitel.hist.no/~helgehaf/openmoko/yaouh_new.py

 awesome, that's lots faster

by the way, i don't know if it's important or not, but iirc osm folder
structure has up to 128000 files per folder, for zoom 17

The tiles have 5-digit names, so the max would be 10 ?

Anyway, that could be a problem. With hundred thousand tiles and about
60 byte per URL, pythm would send a 7.5MB parameter list to a invocation
of curl. That can easily be trimmed down to 950kB by only sending file
names. Still, it'd be interesting to know if the freerunner can handle
that at all. A pc usually can.

A loop can be used to limit this to something sane, like 1000 files or
so. But do anyone actually have that many files? I just checked my
50.000 tiles, and found no more than 250 tiles in any directory. Perhaps
a large square area at zoom 17?

Further speedups are possible. File check data for 50.000 tiles is 12MB,
the limit for such a dataset is how fast 12MB can be downloaded, and how
fast all those files can be checksummed. And then there is the transfer
of changed tiles. My code is inefficient when there are many small
directories, because it starts a new transfer for each directory.

To get the best possible speed, pycurl should be used. Everything can
then be done from inside python, avoiding process creation overhead.
Persistent connections can be utilized for the entire transfer,
eliminating the small-directory problem entirely.

I am not sure if there is a pycurl package yet though.
Installing python-modules dodn't bring it in.

Freerunner freely runs Gentoo

2009-03-03 Thread Sven Rebhan
Hello everybody,

We the gen...@openmoko team are pleased to announce that we reached
our first milestone for running Gentoo on the Freerunner. This mean you can
cross- and natively compile a basic system including X, enlightenment,
the FSO framework, WLAN tools and many more packages. Also some
phone GUIs went already into the overlay located at

http://overlays.gentoo.org/embedded

To get started, please take a look at

http://gentoo.mindzoo.de

or visit us on the Freenode IRC channel #gentoo-openmoko. The goal of
our project is to provide a way to cross- and natively compile all
packages of the protage tree and feed back our fixes to the official
tree. Furthermore, we are going to provide Freerunner specific ebuilds
like for the FSO framework and different phone GUIs. What you can expect:

  - the Gentoo feeling ;-)
  - forget about version conflicts
  - frequent enlightenment updates
  - easy integration of new packages
(start writing ebuilds yourself, it's trivial!)
  - multiple phone stacks
  - CHOICE

So to all Gentoo lovers: Stop-by and get the experience the Gentoo
feeling on your phone!

Disclaimer: Even though we did a great step in the right direction,
there are still enough pitfalls, packages that don't compile and
difficulties in setting up the cross-compile environement. So at this
point in time Gentoo is _NOT_ ready for the average user. If you try
nevertheless, be prepared for a bumpy journey! You have been warned!

Best regards and happy compiling! ;-)

Sven, in the name of the gen...@openmoko team

Yes, it's not surprising.

Due to various reasons -- some inside, some outside Trolltech's

I don't think FDOM is recommended really anymore... at least not the

For a FDOM like experience on 2008.12 install the 2008.12 image then run

There are some things that won't be better, but in some things there is

Word processing application

2009-03-03 Thread Leonti Bielski
Hi!
I'm looking for some kind of word processing application.
I want to use my Freerunner in a library so I would not have to bring
laptop with me - only the keyboard.
I've heard of AbiWord, but can't manage to find an ipk package for it.
Also, is there emacs package for Freerunner available?
Can someone suggest something else for text editing?

[paroli] weekly update week 10 of 2009

2009-03-03 Thread Mirko Lindner
Hej all,

here an overview if the highlights of the things the paroli team has
been working on in week 9 and the first part of week 10:

-the msgs application is in and being shipped in every build
you can view, send, receive, answer to and forward messages
also it will offer you to save any unknown number to your phonebook

-the people application is in and also being shipped every day
you can view, edit and directly call a contact

- the call logs i.e. the i/o application is also being shipped
you can view your call logs and directly return the call
also it will offer you to save any unknown number to your phonebook

- dtmf in tele

- ussd in tele
you can receive and send simple ussd messages. NOTE: a very ugly window
will open with the message written in very small letters, but it works.
We will have a look into this a bit later.

- small reworks on the lists we use

- gsm and battery icons

- muting ringtone when incoming call

- muting call (mutes microphone)

- Charlie did a complete rework of the service class so that there
should not be any errors due to services not waiting for one another anymore

and lots of other small things that would make this an endless list :)

what will we do next:
we will focus on some details that had been neglected so far such as
- finally getting some scrolling or paging to work in our lists
- getting some secondary actions associated with our list items
- look at how we can go about a settings application as discussed on
this list earlier
- make certain internal adjustments to classes and applications to allow
more flexibility
- getting an image that works out of the box again

As usual, if you have any questions, ideas, critique or think you can
contribute to paroli in any way get in touch with me :)

[paroli] codesprint coming closer

2009-03-03 Thread Mirko Lindner
Hej all,

I just wanted to send a gentle reminder about the upcoming paroli
codesprint at the Chemitz linux days.

It is a whole day of live coding and hacking in paroli. I thought we
should focus on getting a flexible, stable settings application in
paroli. The foundations have been written and are already in the code
for you to check it out.

Would be great to see many of you and of course we can look at other
issues and topics too.

So go to the anmelde page[2] and C U in Chemnitz.

Again that depends on usage scenario. For example can you sign your name with
a trackball? Or use one with gloved hands?

This is a case where there is AFAIK no one size fits all sensing technology;
if there was then we wouldn't be having this discussion. Going to a capacitive

Capacitive screens just need really slight touches while resistive ones need a
real pressure to register the click. Although I love the Neo, I really like
using f.e. an iPod Touch because it feels _way_ better. Which might be also
caused by the polished ui, but the touchscreen definitely influences that.

First off sorry about reposting, but after looking at the SHR wiki page
there is one concern and a question

On the wiki page this is listed under the Known Issues

 Address Book

SHR is not implementing a PIM (Personal Information Manager) yet. Work is in
progress, but to included in SHR testing this has some consequences on daily
use:

   - Only contacts on the SIM card are available.

   - It is not possible to import a Vcard file.
  - It seems to be possible with
thisgopher://gopher.fnordpol.de/9/data/DbusAccessScripts_0.0.0.tar.gzscript
written by
  Zem http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/User:Zem#DBus_Access_Scripts.

None of my contacts are on my SIM card and it would take forever to move all
of them onto it, the link the the script quoted is a dead link does anyone
have a correct link they can point me to or a suggested app that can read
Vcards so I can import my contacts from FDOM, copied onto my MicroSD card,
into SHR?

As for the question which one of the files on this server
http://build.shr-project.org/shr-testing/images/om-gta02/ is the Kernel
needed there seems to be two different ones.

[FSO] DBus Remote - missing package socat - for writing remote sms-tool

2009-03-03 Thread Bastian Muck
Hi all,

I'm playing a little with DBus and JAVA. THe first communication just
works fine. I heart, that it is possible to let the local DBus, in my
case a PC, communicate with a remote DBus, in my case the Freerunner
(what else?). In [1] is described how to achieve the remote connection.
The author writes, that the remote system has to have installed socat,
but I can't find it in the repository (FSO MS5). Is it possible that
someone can compile it for me? That would be great.

Perhaps I should say, for which application I want to use this. Maybe
that there is a better way.

I want to write a sms-application for the desktop, which sends the
messages via the freerunner. Another way, which came in my mind was
writing a server (java.rmi) which makes the dbus-connection and a
client, which just connects to rmi. But in my mind the first solution
looks better because you don't need an extra server.

Any comments and hints are welcome.

Re: GTA03 Touchscreen Capacitive (was Re: OT: iPhone howto)

2009-03-03 Thread Anton Persson
Well, there is no (massmarket) implementation of multi-touch using resistive
touch technology. There has been one link in this thread to
one that is being developed, but that technology was not yet finished if I
remember correctly, and it was not licensed to any manufacturer
of touch panels.

A link to the resistive, work-in-progress, multi-touch:

http://hackaday.com/2009/02/19/stantums-high-precision-multitouch/

But except for the multi-touch; the more durable argument is really
important to me, at least.. I want to carry my phone with me
everywhere, and I want it to be easily accessible everywhere which means I
don't want to put it into a protective thingy, and I don't
want to reach for my precision enhancing pointing device to use it.

rigid, no apt-get update to those.. So, updating

Re: [debian] No right click with tslib 0.0.5-1+fso1

2009-03-03 Thread Tina Friedrich
Hi,

I'm using xglamo (and LXDE) and I had trouble with right-click. The
wiki page basically says to use/install libgtkstylus, and insert
export GTK_MODULES=libgtkstylus.so into ~/.xsession.

I did that, didn't work.

However, I pondered this a bit and then went ahead and added that
export line into ~/.bashrc (reasoning that that's where I'd
usually export variables). Restarted X, and now right click works
as it should (i.e. tap-and-hold) - desktop and panel menus, everything.

Hope this helps; if it does let me know and I'll edit the wiki.

That's very sad. :(

[SHR-Unstable] Bluetooth won't connect

2009-03-03 Thread The Digital Pioneer
Hi, I'm afraid I have to appeal to the community for help... :P I'm trying
to use Remoko with my Linux laptop, but I can't get the dumb thing to pair.
I'm scanning with `hcitool scan` which works, and I get the address of my
FR. However, when I `hidd --connect xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx` I get Can't create
HID control channel: Connection refused

That sounds like the FR is refusing the connection, so how do I make it
accept me? :(

Thanks,

[debian] kernel upgrade and touchscreen input problems

2009-03-03 Thread Eli
All,

I did an apt-get dist-upgrade today, and got the 2.6.28 kernel installed in
the process. The FR still boots with the 2.6.24 kernel it had before.
So I wrote the 2.6.28 kernel to /dev/mtdblock3. Unfortunately, I get RCU
detected CPU 0 stall (t=4294908494/600 jiffies) and a traceback, and then it
fails to setup usb0 so I can't log in that way. But it does boot.

I also had to apt-get install fso-config-gta02; otherwise I don't have
a /etc/frameworkd.conf.

Under either the 2.6.24 kernel or the 2.6.28 kernel, I still have problems:
The AUX brings up the keyboard, so that's good.
When the screen goes dim, a tap of the screen brings the backlight back up,
but it won't register the taps on the icons or the keyboard, or the lock
screen.
The Xorg log shows:
(EE) PreInit returned NULL for Configured Touchscreen

Any suggestions?

Eli
