Android rootfs image?

Hi all.

I flashed the new Image 
(http://people.openmoko.org/sean_mcneil/androidfs.jffs2) 
and uimage (http://people.openmoko.org/sean_mcneil/uImage-android).

I expect, as read in other threads 
(http://lists.openmoko.org/nabble.html#nabble-td1583918%7Ca1585457),
 to have the virtual keyboard 
startable via menu. But its missing.

Is there a possibility to install this keyboard.

Yes I believe these are the instructions to install and boot an OS on the SD

Now may be you can fix your IP problem without doing that
Do you know what steps led you to have a problem and not connect to your 
phone anymore ?

Questions about FR (ASU)

Hello, 

Recently, i have bought a FR (GTA02), and updated it to the Om 2008.8, i have 
found some problems that are knows from all, like :
- the GPS need to have a internet connexion by USB or Wifi to get the Map
- when we call a friend, he gets an echo of him voice
- ...etc

I would like to know if these problems would be solve in the next release ? You 
are gonna to tell me to read all the mails, but 800mails to read its a bit too 
much for me :)
I would like to know if we can se the sound volume with hands free kit cause 
currently its very low
I would like to know if there is a pdf ready (in test or release) for ASU ?

and finally I would like to know if there is an erlang binding in works 
currently ?

I`ve done this with a samsung handy (sorry, it was not ericsson), exactly with 
the SGH-D600.
The battery was the standard, here the S/N: NH1YB02CS/-5 and some other infos;

TYPE: 3.7V. Li-ion
Model: BST4389BE

It`s a battery integrated in the cover (see attachment)

It mean the same as one know this from a car with a very low battery... 
(bridged )
just put another battery (I think it`s important, that the second battery have 
the same Volt) parallel to the 
original battery. 
If so, the FR can take the power from the two batteries...

If your battery falls below a certain level then FreeRunner sometimes will
not charge it.

We are working on fixes for this but in the short term you have these
options.


1. Jump start your battery. Michael will explain how, Takes 5 seconds.
2. Get a stand alone battery charger from Nokia ( for battery types 4bl,
5bl, 6bl)
3. Get a replacement battery.

I`ve put right now the freerunner into my PC. Now, I`ll wait for 1 h. and check 
it again
My usb-port should supply 500 mAh, cuz in the past, I`ve charged my freerunner 
over it
I`ve the qtopia image installed, not the ASU...But I tried to start the 
boot-loader too, which is the
original...It should be immaterial which image is installed or isn't it?

Is there any institution for the debug board used with freerunner?

Once I had to use the 230V charger instead of the normal pc-cable to get it 
booting again, maybe it can suck more energy from that. (Although it reports 
getting 500mAh from usb, too.)

yes, i triedbut it went nothing, beside the flashing from the AUX-button 
all 5 sec. combined with
a strange "trrr" out from the speaker..

unable to start up freerunner after batterie was full down

hi all
last night, my qtopia mean that the batteries are down and i have to charge 
them...it was 2 o`clock AM
and nobody will phone me at this time...so, i don`t charge them and let the 
batteries run down...
now, if i put the charging unit on it, i just hear some damped tones out from 
the speaker and see the red led 
on the AUX button is flashing... i have no chance to bring the freerunner 
upneither in NAND nor in NOR-Flash
and least of all not in the normal qtopia image.. :-(
is anyone know this problem with the full discharge...?
i try to flash it with the debug board...

i have other two little tings;

1 => is it not possible to write some text without the dictionary..?
i changed the "use for input" settings in the language menu and restarted 
qtopia...but after the restart,
the "use for input" casket is still active...

2 => if i write a message or other things, i see at the top a drop-down menu, 
that i can change the default keyboard 
to a phone-keyboard..
but i  never have the phone-keyboard...when i activate it, nothing 
happens.i need that, to write messages without 
a pen

other things are really nice...as example the handwriting! good job!

Qtopia on Openmoko?

Attempting to launch the media player caused Qtopia to restart. Three times.

Mp3 files on SD don't appear in the media player's lists, but they DO
appear in "Documents". Clicking on a mp3 file gives a media engine not
configured error.

The POWER button being held activates the "Reset/Restart" menu, but
releasing the button causes it to close. I need to hold down POWER and
press the button I want.

my wireless connection works well, if i start it over the command line..
for that, i created manually a wpa_supplicant.conf..and started it with the 
wpa_supplicant command...
if i am connected, i see this in the wireless-configuration menu as well..and 
the qtopia boot-up is also ok...

Try this:
Quickfix is to ssh into device, edit /etc/init.d/qpe and remove the lines:

which I put in for the 1973 and attempting to get suspend/resume 
working. The little crash at first start was fixed in my initial testing

That is because wpa_supplicant has problems on this system. If you can 
get it up through the commandline, let me know. I couldn't.

Qtopia runs the script /opt/Qtopia/bin/lan-network for wifi configurations.

quickfix:
ssh into the device as root, and then do

ln -s /usr/share/openmoko/scenarios /etc/alsa
restart qtopia

hmmm...the screen does nothing...the freerunner allways change from a black 
background to graphical interface with a 
clock in the middle and batterie status right up
when i put the AUX-Button it gives me a little white @...never mind! i`ll wait

you need to hit the screen to keep it alive. That Qtopia has suspend 
enabled and probably is suspending.

I have build a jffs2 file;

mkfs.jffs2 --pad=0x70 -o rootfs.jffs2 -e 0x4000 -n -d /tmp/jffsroot/

than, i installed the jffs2 with dfu-util...all things looks good...but when i 
boot this rootfs, i just see a black 
screen with a white underline and all ca. 20 sec. i see a graphical interface 
for ca. 2 sec...thats all...

what do i wrong..?

I dunno...making a mistake of 2.8" versus 4.3" is pretty hard to do. 
Methinks I shall stay suspicious.

Doing a bit of scratchpad design work, a 4.3 inch diagonal screen would
result in a device of 3"x4" with 1/4" casing margins on the sides and 3/4"
(thumb width) case end margins (ala the iPhone).  If the device was kept to
1/2" in thickness, it still would fit comfortably in a standard clothing
pocket with about 1/2" to 3/4" to spare.  One centimeter thick would be
**uber-sexy**.  If such a handset with an open software stack became
available, I would drop my iPhones in box and mail them back to Steve along
with an impolitely worded note telling him where he can stick them. 

To reinterate, moving forward with a 2.8 inch diag. screen at any
resolution in a post iPhone world would be a major mistake in my frequently
disregarded opinion.

For what it's worth, I'm in South Carolina, and Suncom
(http://www.suncom.com) works for me.  I'm using the 2007.11 build.  I
just took the SIM card out of my cell phone and popped it into my
glorious neo, and it connected to the GSM network.  I can make calls
from my neo, but I'll be darned if I can figure out how to answer an
incoming call. :-)

We were willing to wait for the commercial version to start our 
development, but if that is not going to be functional in the USA in 
remote areas like other cellphones, then it is lights-out for any 
possible future vendor here in the USA who want to incorporate this in 
to an existing product line.

Thats a fact not a wine.

I will get a development kit from Apple and live with it.
Our products need a  gps/phone/computer system as an add-on and  it cant 
wait past January 2008.

If the GPS works great I will buy it as a PDA in future once it is released.

This morning the project using the NEO was canned, reasons are, ever 
shifting timetables and secondly,  too much risk when the rug is pulled 
from under your feet by FIC suddenly not supporting US  frequency bands, 
while there are other alternatives such as Iphone available with a 
development kit that  might meet our development scenario -- (about just).
Unfortunately rural access is crucial for our applications, so it just 
became a no-no.


Anyway thanks to all for the input, and the NEO was a great idea till 
now, unfortunately it does not seem if it will be available in a working 
state within the next year here in the USA.

It basically tanks one of the largest consumer bases and it tanks my 
project in my company until I find something else.


You left out one important part in your mail below.
Will GPS work without trouble, is it in any way affected by the 
bandwidth issue.
I would surely think not, but if y0ou want to market this to someone as 
a PDA only, then definitely give the complete information sucha as 
include GPS usability in NA.

The solutions are:
1) do nothing, at least  for the GTA02, maybe a fix in GTA03 or 
something similar
2) produce 2 separate phone, 1 for the NA and another one for the Rest 
Of The World (identical phone except the capability to get the 
850/1900 band INSTEAD the 900/1800 one)
3) make a nice community poll to ask if the members can wait another 2 
month (the time is just something I think) to redesign the hardware 
and fix the firmware so that we can have a full quad band phone)


The 3rd solution was not proposed but it's another way to solve the 
problem, honestly i don't mind about the quad band, i live in italy 
and i don't think i'll ever come to america, if i'll do that i'll use 
some other cheap phone, but i think that it's important for other 
community member to have it working in quad band way, so i'll wait if 
the community will decide to wait and obviously FIC will consider this 
solution.

Seriously though, this is VERY bad news for western hemisphere

I will repeat my earlier exhortation to FIC and the project:

The Apple iPhone *HAS* changed the public's perceptions of what a small,
personal communication enabled pocket computer is capable of doing and how
it can make their lives easier and keep them up to date and in touch with
all that interests them.  And after using mine for 60 days now, I am
*CONVINCED* that Apple has hit upon a nearly perfect form factor and device

is a "Golden Form Factor". Yes, there are things I would change and things
I would add and I am compiling a list, and YES, the fact that this thing's
software is NOT open source makes me nuts!

In my humble opinion, FIC needs to scrap the GTA01/02 form factor and
redesign it to closely match the iPhone's front face.  This would give MORE
room inside for the boards and battery than the current "stretched
doughnut" design.At the very least, if FIC is seriously going to put
the GTA02 into production, they should start a separate design team on an
iPhone clone project immediately.  And for Tiny Tim's sake, let's use that
extra room to enable all four bands this time, OK?

Problem is I dont want to buy a lot of  $750 US units if I could just 
develop on e.g. gphone or iphone which will be way cheaper.
If it is OTS, then it is way more reliable due to massicve customer 
feedback than an obscure OEM, but it is a good idea thanks.


It seems I will have to go back to the drawing board and find something 
close to the Neo.

I did not look further as Neo was about 100% what I was looking for.

850 / 1900

So it really seems to be a bad idea to continue with NEO here in the states.
Real pity as it was about the perfect solution for some of our products.

Anyone has an idea of another phone-pda that can at least allow  to 
compile your own programs?


I need phones for customers as service modules so they need to  be able 
to run Linux and be open enough to accept compilers for Console programs 
written in C, fpk, Ada.

Yes well it is the dreaded silly 110V/220V,  Pal/NTSC,  lb/kg
standards  monster again.
Not long ago (10 yeqrs ago) there were a lot of resistance to GSM here
which is just not understandable and luckily it is getting way more
foothold.

I am currently with T-Mobile as they always were a GSM shop.

The phone with the ultimate best coverage for me here in the states on
GSM is an Old Siemens M56 on T-Mobile.
I tried several new phones/services which just died out in the sticks.

Does anyone know if the Siemens M56 was a dual or single  band phone?
If the band-spec is contained in the Neo, I would not be worried about
it.

NA uses the unusual 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands for GSM. The Neo, at
least as it will be first available, will not support 850 MHz (but will
1900 MHz). This means that it can work in NA, _but_ will get worse
coverage than GSM phones capable of also 850 MHz operation. According to
my second-hand understanding of the situation, of the major US GSM
providers, T-Mobile has more 1900 MHz coverage than AT&T/Cingular, and
that major cities may have decent amounts of it as opposed to rural
areas.

No.  The dimensions of the Neo's screen are smaller at 2.5" diag versus 3.5
diag. for the iPhone.  Yes, the VGA resolution is impressive and superior
to the iPhone, but for a touch screen interface, you must maximize the

keyboarding work without annoying the user with constant finger-tip typos.

This is not about style.  This is about optimum human/device interaction
form factors. It is the size and shape and layout of the iPhone that
strongly influences the usability of the device.  And...And...Who says you
can't want style --AND-- freedom?

Once again...Form factor is the point here.  Not Styling.  Trim it
different, use day-glo plastics! I don't care. Just make sure it is about
the same dimensions, predominately rectangular, and has a flush glass
screen.

The first thing I bought as an iPhone accessory was a pack of six Silicone
iPhone jackets, all in different colors.  My wife grabbed the Girly Pink

IMO the neo isn't and should be trying to be schnazzy, I think you're 
wrong about matching up to the iphone's look.

Very true, BUT... and this is a big but

FIC or some other smart manufacturer has to clone the iPhone's form factor
details and performance points.

I have lived with my iPhone now for a few weeks and I simply LOVE it.  I
bought TWO more for my wife and daughter.  Yes, the software IS a big part
of it, but the hardware design is NOT to be discounted here.

I have stated here on list that future FIC designs need to be more like the
iPhone.  Apple has chosen it's (obviously wrong) direction and FIC and
others have an opportunity to step in and give the world what it wants.

In my humble opinion, and I know I'm going to take a lot of arrows for
this, FIC needs to halt the GTA02 work and re-form factor the design to
have a larger, glass protected screen.

There is only about a six month window here that Apple has left open. 
Someone will clone this form factor and slap an OSS stack on it (QTopia?)
and I'd like to see FIC/OpenMoko be the first out of the gate.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.  I know how busy you are and your
taking the time to address my comments is much appreciated.

Your response reminded me of something once taught to me by a man I once
worked for and much admired, Dr. Russ Turner, former CEO of United Space
Alliance, now retired.

He told me that when you have to withhold information from someone, be
honest about it and always take the time to explain why it has to be
withheld.  Also, when you simply don't have the information, let the
inquirer know when you likely will have it.  This two simple rules go a
long way toward keeping people working together effectively.

If I abused the Community inbox with my frustrations, I sincerely
apologise.  I felt it necessary to call attention to the fact that the
community was now split into two camps, the haves and have nots.  As one of
the have nots, I was frustrated with the inability to participate due to
the limited quantities produced in the GTA01 runs, and even more frustrated
with the lack of ANY date information on the GTA01 backorder run or even a
Rough-Order-of-Magnitude date/month/quarter estimate for GTA02 availability.

Also frustrating for me was that the Interest List in the wiki was not used
in anyway to prioritize the orders taken and shipped.  I strongly urge you
to erect a GTA02 PRE-ORDER queue as soon as possible to help those left out
of the GTA01 fun to get a spot in line for the GTA02.  This will also help
you better estimate the production demand.

As for future Neo shaping...

We all like and appreciate style and modernity, but form should always
follow function and let's make sure we think carefully about ways that
people are likely to want to use this device considering the amazing
possibilities an open platform like this has.  I would love to be able to
whip out a blue tooth keyboard and post an entry to my much neglected blog
when I have the opportunity.  The freedom of Landscape or Portrait use
should not be limited to handholding or to the availability of specially
molded cradles.

Thank you again for your hard work and please understand that I share your
excitement for this project and sorry if some of my suppressed excitement
got converted to frustration.

I really wish we could give more accurate timing information. But please
understand that what you're seeing is a product being built from
scratch. We're not using reference designs. We're not using 3rd party
software. We're doing this from scratch. And _very_ publicly. You can
track on code and comments every day if you like. We don't hide
anything. Bugs and all.

Product development is messy. There are literally hundreds of components
in this device, all needing to be sourced with different lead times from
different vendors. If SDRAM becomes scarce, we suffer. If a vendor has
yield problems, so we do we.

I encourage you (and everyone else) to see this project for what it is
-- a truly unique opportunity to take part in the development of an open
phone. This is a personal dream of mine for years. Even though we've had
our fair share of delays, I'm still incredibly excited about where we
stand now.

Your support, by buying hardware, or just making constructive comments,
will allow us to grow and help change this industry. We're still small
now, but we've got grand plans ;-)

These are very true and wise words and my fear is that the community 
criticizing FIC without justification is going to risk closing doors.
It is difficult enough to get Linux support from vendors and FIC do not 
need to hear the kind of rants which were encountered in this thread.
My company intend to use a lot of these, therefore as a prospective 
customer/developer I dont want to hear rants against FIC as it send the 
wrong message.


The community should learn not to bite the hand that feeds it.
A true developer interested in development, will not parade a community 
with posts lambasting it's sponsor  FIC.

Another reason to square off the bottom is to make it stand up on a flat
surface or MORE IMPORTANTLY, sit upright in an off-the-shelf bluetooth mini
keyboard.  You should not be restricted to landscape mode useage when off
device keyboarding.

Remember, were not just talking about a PHONE here, but portable
microcomputing.

Unfortunately this is half the story.
Whatever I ever kept in my pocket fell out and broke if my pocket was 
not buttoned at the top.

Glasses phones pdas ... you name it.
The requirement to have your pocket buttoned up is way more important.
So the requirement  that it must be flat at the bottom is superficial.

I prefer the aesthetic look of the Neo and there is nothing more 
comfortable to handle than a symmetric design.

Just a status update here:

I emailed [EMAIL PROTECTED] and Jouston was kind enough to respond
promptly.  (Thank-you!) Basically, I asked to have my GTA01 back-order
cancelled if they did not have them stateside by September 10th.  Jouston
replied that they would not available until the 20th and promptly cancelled
my order for me.

It simply made NO SENSE to me to keep open an order for the GTA01 if the
GTA02 will follow within 60 to 90 days.  The Wi-Fi feature is an important
enough addition to wait for.

Until then, I have ordered an iPhone and will do my best to avoid bricking
it while I try my hand at unlocking it to work on T-Mobile's network.  Yes,
it lacks the AGPS I need for some of the geospace-aware apps that I would
like to work on, but it will be interesting to study the interface design
up close. 

Also, while I'm at it (and I have your attention), there are a few
horifically basic handset design issues that need to be addressed in future
FIC/OpenMoko hardware designs that looking at the iPhone makes painfully
obvious:

1) Shape.  The hemisphere on the bottom of the GTA01/02 phone will not
allow the phone to remain upright in a breast pocket.  It will always cant
to one side or the other.  The bottom needs to be pretty much squared off.

2) Touch-Screen recess.  The bezel height around the touch screen needs to
be cut down to no more than 1mm so that the maximum touch screen finger use
utility is preserved. 

If these have been mentioned before on the list or the wiki, well, just add
my voice to the choir.

I am frustrated.  After waiting patiently for many, many months for the
hardware to arrive, and getting absolutely NO status information on my
order for weeks, I finally sent an email and I got this:

Why can't I get quality, authoritative answers to these questions?

Unless I'm some kind of idiot, why would I want buy a GTA01 phone if the
GTA02 was to follow shortly?

Why am I not being given the choice to RIGHT NOW to be placed at the FRONT
of the GTA02 sales queue?

Why am I putting up with all this frustration reading about others who
-have- their phones and why should I not just cancel my order??

Convince me.

If a device wants to draw more power it is required to
"ask permission" from the host/hub.  Many simple [non-compliant] devices
skip this step and
just assume that they can draw as much power as they want, which leads to
problems of overloading the host/hub.  The Neo will not draw more than 100ma
until it has gotten "permission".  There is one exception - the neo can
detect its
own 'dumb' charger by the presence of 48kOhm resistance between USB pin 5

So if you have a decently noise-free 5V USB car charger, it would be fairly
simple to solder in a 48k resistor (note that it should be low-tolerance

As for forcing the neo to ignore USB power negotiation, I don't know if this
is a kernel driver issue (hackable) or a USB chipset issue (less
hackable)...

This is a general problem. Where are USB-Power Adator out there. Also

I guess that doesn't change anything because if I understood right,
the 5V channel is used only for charging the Neo, (No power output

I already started a discussion on the wiki, but there isn't too much
activity...
Is the Neo able to provide sound (music) on the 2.5mm connector, and
provide another sound (ring tone for incoming call) on the stereo speaker?

This is a nice to have feature, in my opinion. But I would like to just
lower the
sound in the headset automatically, and activate the other sound on the
speaker.

Are there plans to provide a car adapter for the Neo?
If so, you really should make sure to eliminate any noise. ATM I use a
laptop
as music source for my car. And if I plug in the Car adapter (car power
supply)
I get really annoying sounds from the electric generator and other
interferences.
I tried to filter this with a high performance noise filter, but this
only turns the
noise down, and additionally makes it more nasty (hurts in ears).

I guess if the filtering is done by the power supply itself (cut through
the ground loop)
it could provide a satisfying solution.

Neo Sound and USB Questions

Hi List!

I've got a few questions as I'm a little bit confused about some issues.
(Also have no Neo to test it myself)

First of all, what about the "soundcard" the Neo provides. Is it a good one
or some kind of cheap hardware, designed for phone-call-quality sound 
output?

(And is it sterio or not)

I guess the "AUX-Port" on the Neo is a 3,5mm (or maybe 2,5mm) TRS Connector
(german: Klinkenstecker) used often for Headsets (4 connectors instead 
of 3 as usual).

If so, is it still usable for an external amplifier?

Let's assume the soundcard is no good. So it should be possible to use a 
external USB
Soundcard with crazy-high-definition-whatever-output, to make the Neo 
giving me
crystal clear sounds, right? (I think you need that external powered USB 
hub then...)


Is it possible to use the external soundcard and charge the Neo the same 
time? Or

use an external USB harddisk, the soundcard and still charge the Neo?

Well, for what do I need all that information? I want to use the Neo as 
sound system in

my car, and therefor need all this stuff ;)

Nope.  Re-read the original post.  I captured that text of the blog and the
webstore.  They specifically use the word "OVERSOLD".

That means you may have ordered weeks ago and still may be outta luck. But
without more information from the store staff, you're in Neo-Limbo.  

The last thing I want is to get charged for the GTA01 in October and then a
month or two later the GTA02 comes out. (Though few think that to be a
realistic scenario at this time.)

I would like FIC to pin-point the oversold cutoff order number and post it
as soon as possible, if that is not too much to ask.

Most of us have been exceptionally patient, supportive and exited about the
project.

Many years ago, I saw an interview with Arthur C. Clarke in which he
mentioned his latest "Clarkism":

"Trying to learn about computers without the hardware is like trying to
learn about sex without the software."

I guess that happens if you dont know what you are really charged for 
when locked into a provider such as AT&T.
Even more reason to have an unlocked phone. If you want to unlock the 
Iphone, all you have is a PDA.

It should be clear that the Iphone is a bit dead in the water.
Anyway, this definitely helps to justify the wait for the FIC NEO.

This looks like to me as if you HAVE TO use AT&T when in Europe!?
No wonder it is so expensive to roam.
If this is true, the the Iphone is a dead duck for business.

Seemingly the  poor Iphone users cannot negotiate better deals, why 
because there is no competition .. only AT&T for the Iphone.

Placing an order for September Release of FIC Neo.

Is there any way to place an order now for the public release of the 
consumer targeted FIC NEO to come out after September.


I dont want to purchase the current version but want to place an order 
asap for the public release version with Wifi etc.


I read the posts, but cannot make out the exact order details for the 
consumer model to be released after Septemeber.


I looked over the Iphone recently and however nice the AT&T lock-in and 
lack of GPS makes it a dead dodo for me and my company.


I cant wait to be able to SSH into my phone...awful.

My order was assigned ID# 2012.  I placed my order 4 hours and 36 
minutes after Sean's "Get them while they're hot" email came out.  I 
also got the "YES_I_DO" email, and YES_I_DID.  I haven't gotten any 
other reply since then and my credit card hasn't been charged yet either.

I like the "MyPhone" and  "Your Phone" ideas the best so far.  Of 
course, "MyPhone" is already taken as a current phone product.  One idea 
would be to leave the word "phone" off all together, since that is kind 
of redundant.  Make the tag name be something that's defines itself, 
like Google did.


Regardless of the final tag name, I can see the end of the OpenMoko 
commercialSean Moss Pultz sort of off center camera with a stark 
white background (a la Apple commercials).Sean answers his Neo then 
extends his arm with the face of the Neo filling the camera and says, 
"It's for you."

Andrew, I used both Garmin Ique and Cellphone based-GPS.

I can give you hard examples why no corporation that does service calls 
at this moment would even consider "cell-based GPS".


I visit customers all over the US and Canada.
Out of the 50 or so visits there were about 20 with no cellphone 
coverage in remote areas where sawmills are located.

On the contrary, my Garmin GPS worked flawlessly everywhere.

You have no idea what a PITA it is to get to an airport in the middle of 
the night, with the cell-gps guiding you out of the city and then just 
dies when you get rural.
Furthermore, in order to solve the problem, you will have to carry 3 or 
four simcards from different carriers since the coverage maps are 
different for different areas.


If you stick to urban areas here in the USA,  fine "cell-based gps" 
works fine.
If you do corporate time critical traveling and service just get a 
REAL gps such as Garmin or what the FIC NEO will be able to have.


If you want to lose money in the services industry here in the US...go 
ahead use a cellphone to guide you.

Been there done that, late or lost every time.

AGAIN: I would at this moment not mind to get a Fic Neo if it can make 
calls and receive calls and it will be nice to get the software upgrades 
and see it evolve.

I just cannot buy the APPLE I-Phone.
It is a dead end FIC NEO lookalike , however nice it is.
The Iphone is a nice  city phone gizmo, not a real business assistant
.
The FIC has a real chance to become a real travel assistant, but you 
have to get the basic phones in our hands as soon as the hardware is the 
final version, else you will make FIC  miss the buss.
If it receives call dials, have an address book  and the hardware is 
finalized...get it out!

I dont mind having a FIC NEO 1973, phone that I can only call with and 
receive calls initially.
No problem. I think FIC & developers underestimates this. there a re a 
lot of us in companies want to use the phone platform for other markets 
anyway.
Open Source is the only way we can create derivative applications for it 
to even distribute with our products.


If the hardware is fixed right now and will not be upgraded severely, it 
would be great to have one now and continually upgrade and add software 
as it develops.

This is anyway how most open source folks work and it is part of the fun.

As Steve Jobs said in his keynote speech with the release of the iphone, 
"making a call is the killer app"

He is right and we must not forget that.

I think you guys need to get this out asap.

For developers, a couple of weeks, hopefully.
This will _NOT_ be a workable phone you want to distribute to

This is just my opinion here, but I don't see the Neo1973 to be a mass
consumer device, nor do I think that is/was FIC's/OpenMoko's intent.  The
1973 is a SW Developer/"Bleeding Edge Adopter" platform.  Its a starting
place and an incubator for ideas. I would not expect serious drop hardening
until the third and fourth generation of the series.

And er, Sean...  How's that dang production run going?  Got my credit card
in my breast pocket just waiting.

Lurking her more than a while, I strangely not seen this HW request.

A reasonably general digital signal processor on the phone.

Opening possibility's for all kind of things. accelerated 
decoders/encoders for audio and video, voice recognition and 
fingerprint, 2D graphic acceleration, 3D graphic acceleration, 
accelerated image (think gimp filters) or just any advanced operation... 
or just making up for missing FPU.

While probably more power hungry then respective dedicated chip, it's 
probably a lot more efficient then the ordinary CPU... and more powerful 
and flexible.

Totally incorrect, this was one of the main themes behind the Disney
MVNO and I also think Verizon or cingular have this option as well (I
know I saw a tv ad for one of them a few months ago but cant remember
which one)
