Get the package from
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/libssl0.9.8 -> choose armel.
Unpack this package (easyest in mc), copy the libcrypto.so.0.9.8 in a private 
directory (You could copy it directly to /usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabi , but I 
prefer to have it separated from the official stuff, in that way I remember 
what I did later)
Make a symlink in  /usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabi pointing to the 
libcrypto.so.0.9.8 in Your private directory.

Done.

Hehe, I don't think I've given a thank you to either of them either. It's
always hard in FOSS because you don't want to forget anyone. I think the
SHR folk and kernel hackers deserve lots of thanks as well! The folks who
have created themes for both have always made me love the phone more, also
all the authors of the various apps created for both stacks. Without each
of these groups the phone would be so much less. As nice as a fast stable
phone is, it's not as impressive without applications to make use of it and
a pretty UI; and no point to having a pretty UI and plentiful applications
if the phone isn't stable or working properly. Almost forgot to extend
thanks to Openmoko and all it's employees for taking the lead in this area
and producing this kind of hardware when no one else was willing.

I'm strapped for cash too, but whenever looking at other phones, I'm still
missing features that the FR has (except GTA04 of course, will be placing
my order as soon as I can budget for it- god damn it's expensive). As you
said, you'll have to pry it form my cold dead hands! I *love* being able to
run almost all 30,000+ apps in the debian repos if I need to; I *love* USB
host mode; I *love* that it runs Debian; I *love* that a group is working
on a completely free GSM firmware (does any other phone have anyone working
on that?); I *love* that we have schematics and that people have found good
mods to improve performance / fix bugs (I wish I had the soldering skills
to apply it, but I don't want to mess it up by lifting a pad or spilling
solder- those points are tiny); and tons more. There have been many people
bashing the phone, especially at launch, but most every complaint I've
heard has been resolved (at-least for me).

Don't get me wrong, it would be great if our community was as large as
Android or IOS, however we've come a long way with our limited
resources/numbers. I only wish I was able to contribute more myself.

I think you can configure gpsd to automatically run script which is executed 
when client program connects. It could be e.g. /opt/qtmoko/bin/gps-poweron.sh 
I havent played with gpsd very much yet. I think i will not work on this until 
i have case for mine GTA02, because i cant test it now...

A really big thanks for this. Navit seems much more reactive on qtmoko
than on SHR.

But, the topic seems to need some more work for a better integration.
When I start navit, nothing occurs on GPS device part: nor power on,
nor GPSd launch. Did I missed something? Currently I imagine the
following solutions:
- use a script shell wrapper around navit to activate device, start
gpsd and fire navit (and undo all these when navit terminate)
- insert some specific code in navit for qtmoko, like NeronGPS does
(directly power on or off from code via
/sys/devices/platform/gta02-pm-gps.0/power_on)

This topic brings me an other question: what design for GPS related
tools? Raw device (like NeronGPS) or GPSd (like currently
pre-configured navit-qtmoko)?

Note: I'm still using qtMoko v35.

I have ported it - it was quite easy. It does not use X server. I uses qt 
painter that is drawing to framebuffer as all other qtmoko apps.

I have something like this in my navit.xml:


and /home/navit/scripts/say_it.sh is a script  that does some post
processing for speech,
but you can make it do anything i guess.
The %s is passed on to the script as command line parameters, so you
could first handle
$* in the script and then dim/brighten the screen.

is your GPSD daemon running? Is it configured properly?

If my Navit works (i.e. has current position), I can see actual
coordinates in "Action" menu below the car icon (in the middle of left
row).

My navit.xml is attached.

BTW ... I have nothing on the screen but the map and + - icons. If you
managed to get ETA time, trip length, next turn, etc. information on the
screen, could you please share your navit.xml?

I did not find anything related to QWS in Debian (yet). But I found
the following page:

The interesting part is QWS precompiled packages already exist.
The worth part is the introduction. It seems that X11 and QWS flavour
are API compatible, but not ABI compatible. So, precompiled Debian's
package with X11 are not supposed to run with QWS.

So, it seems that the only "simple" solution is to find a way to build
the "qtpainter" navit's plugin with QWS.

QtMoko (or previously Qtopia) was meant to be embedded thing and it bundles 
it's own QT - in sources it's under qtopiacore/qt This is then built to 
/opt/qtmoko/lib/libQt* binaries.

As for source code - it's vanilla QT 4.5.3 from Nokia's git with like 2..3 one 
liner patches.

Building QT is part of the build system and build files. When you build qtmoko 
with configure && make && make install it also builds QT.

This is something i am very interested in. If we could install QWS version of 
QT (embedded one which paints to framebuffer) it might be theoretically 
possible to run all QT applications in debian without recompiling.

But this has to be tested and we would have to upgrade QtMoko's QT to 4.6 so 
that it's the same version as in debian.

Hmm interesting - if navit-graphics-qt-qpainter is separate and not big

Xglamo is small embedded version. It's very small (~1MB) and similar e.g. to 
Xfbdev [1] except that it supports glamo.

xserver-xorg-video-glamo is glamo driver for full Xorg server. It's included 
in debian [2]

Yes, it works too! I've checked:
Prevent suspending
Use window manager
Enable GPS module
Fullscreen

And Navit now seems to run properly. I just need to play with navit.xml
to set correct maps, etc.

Please check QX->Menu->Favourites and enable navit from there - it should work 
if navit installs /usr/share/applications/navit.deskop

The screen could be fixed if you enable window manager in application settings. 
Current QX window manager is quite simple, you might need to use matchbox for 
more complex things.

http://qtmoko.sourceforge.net/download/Xglamo.deb

Btw it should be as simple as this:

* install qtmoko (v35)
* start qx
* click the button "start" and when asked choose "Xglamo"
* wait until everything is installed
* xserver with xterm should start
* twice press AUX to end it

If you want more apps (like navit):

* from shell do "apt-get install navit"
* run qx
* choose "Favourites" in menu
* if the package installs .desktop file to /usr/share/application it will have 
icon there, so click it to enable it
* you can use menu->Settings on the application list item to adjust settings 
like window manager.
* if the app does not have .desktop file you can launch xterm and start it from 
there

Debian puts navit.xml into /etc/navit/

Hi everybody,
freshly installed qtmoko_v35 on nand on a freerunner and tried 

1) to install navit via apt-get: doesn't work (apt-get didn't install the
navit.xml for example)

2) to install it via openmobile-zip file. After the map-configuration it starts,
I even get a map, but the gps doesn't work. Starting NeronGPS simultaneously
gives me a gps-signal on Neron but nor on Navit.
I dont get any routing as well.

Did anybody succeed in apt-get install navit ? Or is openmobile the only and
old-fashioned way ?

Where can I see the output from QX/navit ?

Oh gosh, QTmoko is really nice but without Navit .

I didn't have this file. So I created it with your template and after a reboot 
the known error at starting navit "Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:"" is 
gone.

Navit starts (the background color occurs), but it directly gets frozen. And 
if you click on the screen, the desktop becomes visible step by step.

By the way this happens only if i start navit in the terminal on the neo 
directly. If I want to start it over a ssh session from my laptop I get the 
well nown error:

"root@neo:~# navit
navit:main_init:Warning: LC_ALL is set, this might lead to problems (e.g. 
strange positions from GPS)
map_rect_new_textfile unable to open textfile /root/.navit/bookmark.txt

It is possible to start a program over ssh on an other device?

I can hardly help you further since I don't use the qtmoko distro. But
you may want take a look at the wiki pages to find out how to fine tune
your configuration using the navit.xml file:

If you are connected via SSH, you need to set DISPLAY variable first.

So I installed the package "xserver-xorg-video-fbdev"

Now the error was:

IIUC qtmoko is based on Debian. Why not install Navit from the

No nothing to do with buffer.. it's xinput-calibrator in Xsession.d and
config for gta01..

Update:

I did an opkg update & opkg upgrade yesterday, and there were 92 packages
that were upgradable. An updated version of Navit was included, and the
problem is fixed.

$ grep navit pkgs.upgradable.20100201
navit - 1:0.1.0+svnr2902-r5.4.4 - 1:0.1.0+svnr2934-r5.4.4
navit-icons - 0.1.0+svnr2871-r1.4 - 0.1.0+svnr2927-r1.4

The other possibility that I considered is that the display driver may have
had a memory leak, and two xserver packages were updated as well:

$ grep xserver pkgs.upgradable.20100201 
xserver-xorg-conf - 0.1-r18.4 - 0.1-r19.4
xserver-kdrive-common - 0.1-r38.4 - 0.1-r41.4

I don't know if either of those xserver updates have anything to do with the
screen buffer.  I don't even know if any of these packages actually fixed
the problem, but Navit doesn't crash (whatever the cause), and that's what's
important.  :)

Thought there might be someone that's interested in this thread.

Hi,
I am not sure we can use htop to profile that.

If a given software does lots of malloc/free, I could be a clever choice 
for the operating system to let it occupy a big chunk of memory.

For example : you are the OS, you have 50mb of free memory and a user 
launch navit, which does lots of malloc/free... it seems ok for me to 
allocate ~45Mb for it (after 5 minutes of usage), since it seems to do 
lots of things in memory and you have 50Mb free. It does not mean this 
is a memory leak.

The best way is to launch a memory profiler I think (valgrind), or maybe 
another big program when navit is launched. If its memory consumption 
decreases, then it's fine. If not, it's a memory leak.

Without gps input you can set postions by clicking on
the map, which will open the home screen. There select
actions-->globe symbol, which stands for the position
you clicked on, and then choose whether you want it as
current or destination position. Equally you can define
a bookmark.

I pushed some changes to SHR repo few hours ago.

We have better default config now and its splitted to 4 easier managable
config files in /usr/share/navit.

More tweaks will follow.

But check new configs with next navit update (not sure when buildhost
will build feed, because there is rebuild from scratch going..)

It took we quite some time to make navit work for me
as well. Meanwhile I use it as gps-aware map and for
bike navigation.

There's several aspects that need to be setup:

- Supplying the map data as already pointed out by others.
I use europe.navit.bin.
- Setup you locale as described in [1]
- Tweak the layouts, to show the details you like to see.
I had to enable living streets for cars and paths for
bike for navit to find the routes as expected.
- Onscreen Display (I still need to tweak that)
- Audio guidance (I haven't set that up so far)
- Valid network connection to your freerunner to
use it as gps device for your desktop, if desired.

It helped me a lot to split up configuration files
into one file per vehicleprofile and layout and include
those into the main navit.xml. That way you easily
compare different vehicleprofiles and layouts.

The binary data supplied by cloudmade contains most of the
OSM information, you just need to make navit display it in
a reasonable manner concerning design and cpu usage.
There are some problems with finding cities as Martin
pointed out. Most bigger places seem to work though.

You can have a look at my configuration at [2]. Note that
it's far from perfect but might help as a starting point.

You don't have to be online, but you need right source for binary maps.
Last time I checked maps downloaded from
http://downloads.cloudmade.com/
I wasn't able to find town/street etc., I was told that cloudmade is
using older version of osm2navit and that maps from
http://maps.navit-project.org/download/
should have search working and really search works for me...

Not sure if its still the case.. Last time I checked was about half year
ago.

I find navit very useful, both on a eee pc and on the freerunner.
Please take a look at the wiki.navit-project.org page for instructions
on setting up maps.
You need to edit your navit.xml file to use the maps of your area.

i also have a dim recollection of that kind.
i use
LANG="en_DK.UTF-8"
in /etc/default/locale and have no issues whatsoever (though no german  
interface -- which i don't want either).
navit is started by script with LANG=C to avoid that annoying lock-in to  
the locales country, i never really understood what caused that design  
decision anyway (what is f'rinst a french in russia supposed to do? have  
russian as locale, being unable to read anything or having french and  
being unable to search a place in russia).

With the internal GUI, you can change the country, but you'd better
make sure that icon_xs is set to 32 otherwise you won't be able to see
the icon.

by accident i found an trac entry, mentioning, navit would read LC_LANG --  
it doesn't.

instead it reads LANG.
not a good idea ...

Good point, if PIM could hold a value for coordinates it should not be too hard 
to implement this in any address book app.
It's 2 dbus calls to get the navit instance and another to set destination [1]

I did this with dbus-send after activating dbus interface of navit in navit.xml 
(centering works the same way as setting destination...):

Navit refines the result list when you add letters.
At the end you just have to pick the right item in the (small) list.

If you see nothing in town list after writing 'A' (for example), it 
could mean :
- you use a piece of openstreetmap with tags navit cannot understand
- no city with a name beginning by 'A' in the selected country (lol)

I'm not BTW.

However I've "designed" that skin by only using the moko in portrait
mode since my car-phone-holder can be used only in a such way :P

Ah, and I've written in the Configuration Navit wiki, it can be pre-set
for any interface by setting the "pitch=xx" argument in the  tag
of the navit.xml file.

BTW : you can have a huge speedup in menus (from 1 or 2s to almost nothing)
by using PNG files instead of SVG.

I've posted the tip on the French forum, but forgot to paste it here, until
it is integrated in navit's SVN.

Nice job!
I only see a little glitch : on the upper right corner, your GPS signal
'widget' is on top of your current road name 'widget', hence the darker
area. The trick to avoid this (and to avoid long names being displayed under
the GPS signal level widget when you are on a road with a long name) would
be to reduce the width of your current road name widget.

Other than that, very good layout.

If someone is interested, it could also be useful to post landscape layouts
maybe?

Actually, you can enable/disable it from the Settings/Display. It's
called... 3D :)
(notice that there is a little bug atm : when you touch/click the 3D button,
the button background will blink to grey to show the click was taken into
account, but the button label won't change to 2D. If you go back to the map,
3D mode will be enabled (it may take 1 or 2 more seconds to draw the fist
time in 3D), or if you go back to settings, then display, you will see that
the button label would have changed to 2D now. Should be fixed Really Soon
Now.

I've just found that to use the 3d-mode with the gtk interface I have to
set manually the pitch by using the "w" and "x" key of the keyboard
(rotation with "a" and "d").

Maybe should be added a pre-set "3d" view in the Display menu too.

Pardon!? Yes it is hackish and ugly and potentially not stable.
But there is just no way how it could break other apps that are  
correctly linked. And wrongly linked apps might work which they did  
not before.

I've done the ln, now I'll put FR near the windows hoping for a fix :D

I've solved the absence of libgps with a simple "ipkg install libgps17"
("opkg install libgps17" won't work...).

In the mean time, my FR _did_ get enough satellite reception to get
tangoGPS to display the current location. So, that works...

continued to work? I'm trying this in my SHR-testing, but I don't want
any breakage.

And... in my /usr/lib directory I don't have any "libgps"... how could I
solve this?

Maybe you want to check out [1], [2] and [3].

I stumbled accross these pages by searching for Mineque on the  
documentation wiki (they had a screenshot of a skin called Mineque on  
their main page).

I was quite amazed about the possibilities of this software :-)

I got Navit to work doing the following
- Drop to a shell prompt on the FreeRunner (or use ssh to connect)
- cd /usr/lib
- ln -s libgps.so.17 libgps.so.16

This makes Navit think that libgps.so.16 is installed.

Note: This may work for Navit for now, but may break other programs.

In my case, it seems that the libgps installed on my system is too new.

I haven't figured out how to solve this yet, but I'll let you know if
I find out.

you might want to read http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Customize_Application_Icons
Also i noticed that you may have to change the section Categories= in
the respective .desktop file, because some keywords like e.g. Utilitiy
let it appear on the desktop and some don't. Maybe someone else knows
more about this.

I think that a separate package is a good thing, it saves space on the
device and not prevent anyone from installing it to have a map to show :)

How do you use speech-dispatcher directly and not via command line?
I compiled navit with the speech options "speech-dispatcher" and
"commandline" but never found the real meaning of the first option.
At the moment i use the export var and spd-say in the cmd line.

Hi,

i had solved this, by usind the speech dispatcher directly (not via spd-say) 
and does add "export LANG=de_DE.UTF-8" to the speech-dispatcher
start script to localize spd for germany. and in this mode
the ß is no problem anymore. may be this would also work for the cmd line
version. so, try it.

maybe this works as a quick and dirty hack:
(sed should be installed)


echo '%s' | sed 's/ß/ss/' | spd-say -l de

OR

spd-say -l de '`echo '%s' | sed 's/ß/ss/'`'


You may consider to report this as a bug to the specific project.

I was missing the package
locale-base-de-de
which is not installed by default in FSO,
now it works pretty good.

"export LANG=de_DE" and "spd-say -l de '%s'" works for me to let navit
speak german. Don't know anymore why it didn't work at that time.
Just be sure to install a recent version because it works much better. :)

I have 3 binary-type map files.  The planet map files is from Sept.
28, 2008 (planet-080928.bin).  I downloaded it from
http://maps.navit-project.org/ a few months ago.  The other two maps I
downloaded just a few days ago using the "Planet extract" tool at
http://maps.navit-project.org/download/.   For one of them I made a
box around the entire United States, and for the other I made a box
around the entire state of Florida (U.S.).

The prebuilt planet file seems to have searchable city/street data,
but the two I downloaded via the Planet Extract tool don't seem to
have any searchable data.  There are two reasons that I really want to
reduce the size of the map files.  First, searching is somewhat slow
for the entire planet. :-)  Second, since the search results for the
data don't indicate state/district, I may get dozens of towns by the
same name and have no way of knowing which state it's in.  The "view
on map" option, besides being tedious, doesn't seem to work as I would
expect.  It shows the map for a few seconds then returns to the main
map and I have to start all over again, and the map it did show for a
few seconds was at a zoom-level at which I couldn't tell what I was
looking at.

Is navigation only available with the prebuilt OSM binary map data for
Navit?  I have one of the prebuilt planet.bin files and I can
successfully (well, somewhat) search for towns, etc.  However, I also
downloaded 2 other smaller binary maps files from

Now you are able to search for a town.
You should have the country flag in the upper left corner. If you have a
cross (meaning your country isn't auto-detected) or if you have the wrong
country, touch the flag and you'll be able to search for a country.

Once you have a town, touching it will bring a submenu (destination, view on
map, search street).
If you touch the green tick on the upper right corner, it will bring you
directly to the street search.
