Hi, after being unsubscribed for a while, I have re-listed with a
question: I've got a Mac Classic or an SE to donate to the cause of
automating things in the house (i.e. turning on lights, etc) I've been
wondering if there's a way to program the serial port to run things such

It depends on how many items you want to control? If you only wanted to

Howdy. I will be spending a week in NYC a couple
weeks from now. Does anybody know of any cool used
mac stores to browse around? I looked online, but had
difficulty finding some (oddly enough).

The usual blah blah blah applies: I'm not the seller, I don't know the
seller, I don't own eBay so I won't get any money from this transaction.
The subject line reads: Dove SCSI Expansion for Vintage Macs

My guess, and I haven't tried any if this on a Mac, would be to look at
the
handshake lines using a scope, and then try opening and closing the port
in
code on the Mac, this is what I have done on RS-232 before, and I would
expect a similar operation on the Mac.
Excuse my ignorance, but

Can an AppleCD 600e fry an SE/30 system board?
Only if the SCSI-related parts are very, very kaputt (sort of
short-circuited), but it takes a lot to fry a whole mobo via the SCSI port,
the risk is in the SCSI chip. Sounds more like you do have a hardware
problem, but not the bellyup kind, to

Very unlikely.

Hi!
There's someone on comp.sys.apple2.* by the name of Paul Santa Maria is

Hi all -
I brought home another orphan tonight, an SE/30 which I think is called
an 8/80. Anyway, it powered up okay but didn't recognize the hard
drive. So I booted from floppy to make sure it would (boot), and then
swapped out the drive for a 360 Mb, cleaned the interior out, and

Yes you can get any serial port to go High or Low ( +5V or 0V ) and
use very simple TTL interface circuitry to close a relay, if all you
want to control is ONE item. For more elaborate schemes, such as
using a Classic to schedule home lights on and off etc, look into the
XTension option.
