It depends on how many items you want to control? If you only wanted to control 1 simple on/off item like a lamp then some simple latch circuit connected to the serial port could probably be made, of course you will need some good isolation between your mac circuit and the AC side of things,

My guess, and I haven't tried any if this on a Mac, would be to look at the handshake lines using a scope, and then try opening and closing the port in code on the Mac, this is what I have done on RS-232 before, and I would expect a similar operation on the Mac. Excuse my ignorance, but

Yes you can get any serial port to go High or Low ( +5V or 0V ) and use very simple TTL interface circuitry to close a relay, if all you want to control is ONE item. For more elaborate schemes, such as using a Classic to schedule home lights on and off etc, look into the XTension option.
