System Picker, like a fresh install sets its prefs in pram, I'd suggest
this pref was corrupted by the first use of system picker which stuffs
up the startup disk cp also. The fresh install over rode this preference
giving you a clean slate again.

Check how many blessed sys folders you have now its working.
Careful when entring unblessed sys folders else you'll find you have the
same trouble over again.

Cheers.

System Picker unblesses *all* but the active partition All else are
unblessed .
If all partitions have a blessed system folder System picker will *not*
work.

I doubt its a disk driver error or the way its formatted. I think the
use of System Picker has mucked something up as it has in the past for me.

Unbless all but one partition on each drive to test the startup disk CP.
Test System picker with all extra system folders unblessed.

I'll drop another drive in on the weekend and test here.

Re: Boot Partition Selection

2005-12-21 Thread Scott Baret
I have used Silverlining since 1993 to format drives.
Every time I have had success with booting from
different partitions (I used to keep 6.0.8 on one and
7.1 on another on an SE/30 I had for a while). The
software was bundled with a LaCie I picked up in
September 1993 (a whopping 160MB external!) and I'm
not sure where to find it these days. Of course, I
could find my disks and upload it for anyone who needs
it.

My guess is the drive needs reformatted. Even Apple HD
SC Setup has enabled me to boot from multiple
partitions.

I'm playing around with a couple different OS's: 7.0.1, 8.1, and A/UX.
I can use the startup disk control panel to switch between two
different physical drives with no problem, but I cannot isolate one
bootable partition within a physical drive. Each partition only has
one system folder present that is blessed. System Picker doesn't show
any selectable system folders in the pull-down menu even though all
the system folders are in the root of their respective partitions. I
have seen System Picker work under emulation on my PC.

A workaround I've been using is to put a folder within the system
folder to hide the finder in for all the partitions except the one
that I want to boot. I was hoping that there is a more elegant
solution to picking a boot partition. Could the problem be caused by
how the drive is formatted or the disk driver?

Re: Boot Partition Selection

2005-12-20 Thread Jeff Walther

Date: Mon, 19 Dec 2005 15:47:11 -0700
From: Thomas <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I installed a larger hard drive in my SE/30 and made a few partitions
to be able to boot different OS versions, but I'm having difficulting
specifying which volume to boot from. I used the startup disk control
panel to select the partition I wanted to boot, and then when I open
the control panel again to confirm it made the selection, it shows all
the partitions as being selected. When I reboot, the first partition
always boots no matter which partition I choose. The system folders
in the other partitions are blessed.

For the older operating systems (pre 7.6?) one needed a utility
usually included with the disk formatting software, in order to set
which partition to boot from.

APS PowerTools and FWB Hard Disk Tool Kit included utilities or
features that allowed one to choose a boot partition among other
functions.

It might be an interesting experiment to try the Start-Up Disk CP
from 7.6.1 with the earlier OSs.

K, I use system picker to boot from different partitions or the startup
disk control panel for different drives.
System picker is a little buggy sometimes especially if you go "blessing
folders it doesn't do itself". When using System picker only have one
blessed folder on each physical drive else you will have problems, turn
the search depth up is an option / under options in the drop down menu..
The Startup Disk CP should work for different drives and is also alittle
buggy, I find it works generally.

good luck
