One more example of Tom, being...Tom. It also depends on the quality of the controller, you can get cheap esata controllers that are slower, or good ones that blaze. Has nothing to do with apple or pc. Different interfaces for different jobs. Note that Apple and PC's both use USB, SATA..FW. On

I'm sorry for the misguidance about Firewire. I thought I had read somewhere that they were phasing it out, can't recall where, and then was looking for an inexpensive Mac notebook for a friend. The new MacBooks don't have Firewire but there was a $750 refurb that had it. I think he got one.

What I hear from friends closer to Apple than I am is that FW is alive and well, but that general consumers don't care whether it's there or not. The MacBook Pro and desktop Macs all have FireWire. If it were eliminated from future iMacs or Mac Minis, I'd be forced to get a Mac Pro, or figure

If you buy an external drive, they may not have the full warranty of a bare drive. I worry more about warranty length and ease of exchange, WD, seagate...between the two I can't say which I've had better or worse luck. I've a friend who replaced his 5400 drive with a 7200 drive in his macbook
