Run as in cost. You said it up converts...but if nothing is HD what is
there to up convert? Up converting dvd players take dvds and push them to
480p AFAIK. But if your source is standard 480i, then it's never going to
be better then that. Do standard directv boxes do 480p?
Upconverting, when
Agreed, upconverting really does make a difference. I use an
upconverting DVD player and while it doesn't look as perfect as 1080i,
it is still quite impressive. It certainly looks a whole lot better than
some of the 720 stuff that is being broadcast as HDTV.

The DirecTV
AFAIK that is how you do it. I would keep a standard tuner around for
that if you really want to rely on it for audio.

Not exactly on topic, but are any of CSPAN's podcasts the same as what
you're recording? http://www.c-span.org/podcast/
Can you set timers with the on-screen guide? I 'autotune' any station
and program I want to view that way. We have DirecTV. Do other services
have those settings?

Well with a regular receiver you can autotune...with the dvr you record but
it doesn't change the sation, it can record it in the background. So i have
to record using both tuners up so one will actually change the output. Some
of the podcasts are the same but mostly not. I go thru

What does the HD dvr run?
It's not HD. It records in standard def, and upconverts to 1080i.
Picture on 37 LCD and 42 plasma TVs is quite good. I like being able
to re-use the DVD-RW disks. You can get HD for a lot more, but for
recordings that we intend watch but not always save, this works

I recently upgraded my standard receiver to a DVR. I use this one to feed
my tv card on my computer and I was recording audio from cspan for example
to mp3 for later listening on my ipod. With a regular receiver I could set
the unit to change to a station at a certain time, with the dvr I can of
