Thanks for the incites. I'll read up on your ideas and try the different
booting modes. Today, after another shutdown/startup cycle, Thunderbird
is no longer Null, and Seamonkey, which was also null, is no longer.
Sunbird still is. Audio Hijack still is, and is up to date. I do have

Were the programs showing up as null migrated or installed fresh?

All the null named programs were migrated. But plenty of migrated
programs are not named null, the icon for the programs in each case is
right there beside the word null, the programs are all working properly,
and in the case of Thunderbird, Seamonkey, and now Audio Hijack, the
name null has
I would bet that the null had something to do with the migration of
those particular programs...
OS X runs some maintenance programs occasionally and that might account
for the later change...

I lean more towards thinking it's a quirk of 10.5, maybe in conjunction
with the migrating. You could be right about OS X maintenance fixing it.
I didn't find any discussion of a migration resulting in these null
names. I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens.
Thanks again for the input.
No comments on this issue, eh? I suppose you'd have to be a serious OS X

What I find when I Google is that it's:

I googled Process name (null) on OS X and came up with this:

I guess you have already done this because the results seem to refer to
A Classic environment or apps which doesn't add up in your case...

Have you tried running top in Terminal to see if the process
names show up there? This will give us a little more information
on how deep the problem goes, and it is also a partial substitute
for Activity Monitor. You can read about it at

I am running 10.4.11 and do not have this problem. I run Thunderbird,
but not Audio Hijack (I use WireTap Pro) and Sunbird (I am now looking
at it thanks to you). What OS are you running? Do you know if you have
always had this problem or is it new?
