That seems a little extreme, what are the opportunity costs
of using VLC?
Admittedly that was my first reaction also, based on if it
doesn't work 100% and if you have something that does,
use it.
The reason for my question about why he would use WMP
in preference to VLC was
VLC is a good choice, good support for a wide variety of codecs out of the
box. Codec/containers etc can be extremely confusing especially when you
get into subtitle support etc.
You may look at this codec to install:

VLC isn't as 'clean' in appearence, but offers more options and supports a

By support I mean VLC could be out of business in the next 20
minutes. Yes it does what it does well.
Do they have a sustainable capacity? Time will tell.
VLC is open source with developers all over the world contributing.

Over the long term will WMP or VLC be more a reliable choice?

WMP is proprietary and belongs to a company with a track record of
manipulating its software to extract every last advantage.

I sure thought so as I read this ridiculous thread today. But I put it
away, and cranked up some tunes.
But WAIT. WMP is NOT putting out sound! WTF? The seek bar is moving,
and the visualizations are playing. VLC is playing the song. I'm
puzzled as I swear regular mp3's played just fine in WMP

LOL. No it works fine. Just a little policy disagreement. Continue
as normal, sorry for the interruption.

Well, I've since powered down and rebooted. Still WMP has no sound
from mp3s. Most odd.

Realistically? Win98, WinME, WinXP. But also maybe Win95 or Win7.
The solution is probably about the same in all of them, but I always
try to make the point that when one reports troubles one needs to give
basic information.
