[CGUYS] welcome to thunderbird

2011-08-12 Thread gerald

vista, firefox, tbird, big computer with lots of free space.

once every couple weeks i get a tbird upgrade. seems even more
agressive than MS improvements. i get to the computer in the morning,
and it's there. a couple weeks ago, i got a sidebar calendar from
them. did not have much use for it, but really did not know how to
completely delete it.

about tues or wed, got another UG. few minutes later, got an email that
wanted display on firefox. attemped display crashed the computer,
pretty hard. after 3 hours of mucking around, and probably doing no
good at all, i was able to get firefox back up. could not open tbird.
went to the thunderbird site to look for reported problems. saw none.
google post mentions the calender sidebar causes some problems.

while at the tbird site, i downloaded and then ran the latest tbird.
all works. there is no sidebar calender at the moment.

[CGUYS] firefox 5.0

2011-07-26 Thread gerald
a while back i loaded firefox 3.xxx or 4.xxx and found my system was
very unhappy.
i poked around and found i had to eliminate some pop up blocker, or
something to mgenerate happines in my firefox. i just ended up with
firefox 5.0, and it is slow, and it crashes a lot. behaves like a beta
program. anyone know what is wrong, or what the fix is.

vista home, amd quaddraport in an acer, tons of memory, ati video, panda
antivirus.

it also happened about the same time i installed a usb 3.0 card and
seagate 3.0 drive(3.0 is not MS approved)

you can get the 3 user pack on amazon for about $30. . i have never
seen firewall reviews. kapersky is a very nice, non intrusive (norton
is very intrusive) AV. i use panda(?). it is also very non intrusive.
reviews are here

[CGUYS] fios renewal was:Digital TV [Was: Broadband Speeds Map]

2010-04-27 Thread gerald slawecki
>my promo fios ran its' course. so, since i had a really lot of time to waste,
>i tried to renew online. i cannot renew on line, as i am an existing
>customer. all packages on line are promo packages and are for new customers.

for the "triple play"(tv,computer, telephone), the telephone person gave me 3
options . lo,mid,hi:$120,130, and 145. two year package, with a $360 pro
rated early cancellation penalty. i had a $110 cost for the middle package.
the mid pack is 5/20 up/down. the hi pack was 30/30. big push (lots of sales
ups) to get me to get that wonderful speed. after starting on acoustical
modems, 5/20 seems pretty fast to me.

they will not show in writing what is in any of the packages. they will not
show in writing what is in the cancellation package(that's 360 bucks). i got
some verbal stuff, but did not tape it, and do not believe they would honor it
, anyway.

i had received a letter from verizon notifying me that my 130 promo mid package
was expiring, and going from 110 to 120. this has no cancel penalty. so i
took the mid package at 120.

i received an email conformation that i have renewed. my new mid pack is $125.

i just got a hard copy promo letter from Comcast for their "triple play" for
$99. anyone have this package? any ideas what is in the package in the way of
speeds and feeds and HD channels?

i have under $100 in it. does that mean i should sell it for 100, if it is

should i sell them for the $100 i would have in them? some of these domain

Re: [CGUYS] LCD HDTV

2010-03-22 Thread gerald slawecki
i bought mine through buy.com a couple years ago. i think them a front for
corporate samsung. it was shipped airfreight fedex from CA to DC. i bought a
55" LED that is about 6-8" thick. it weighed around 100lbs in the crate.
fedex did not wait while i uncrated it, which took at least 15 min.

samsung has a nice chart and retail prices here:

http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/tv-video/televisions/led-tv/index.idx?pagetype=subtype

i thought what i was buying was a LED-DLP. one of the reasons i bought the LED
was the bulbs in the rest of the dlp's have less than a 1000 hr half life.
that's not very long(1000hrs is 6 weeks).

our led is still running after two years, and i would guess 3 days a week x 6
hrs on. we listen to the cable music.guess that be about 2000 hrs.

my question is, can i get away with overrighting office 2003 with 2007. can i

Re: [CGUYS] Relinquishing copyright on Wikipedia photo

2009-03-10 Thread gerald
I think i would contact the owner of the copyright and get a written release
from him. there is a copyright problem if you are to profit from this image,
unless he releases the image.

copyright law for artistic items is really screwed up. you may need a release
from the guy who made the carving, although it looks pretty wpa to me. if wpa,
no copyright. and i think the guy can not get a copyright to hold up.

wonder why the guy shot it at a diagonal.

some of the laser cartridges, particularly canon, or color are extremely
expensive. probably charge enough to make them more expensive than inkjet. i
know hp decided to get into that mode, and xerox one upped them. a full set of
full color cartridges cost more than the machine.

in the world of dot matrix, epson is tough to beat. they never established a
trash line (HP,Brother, compaq, lexmark, xerox) to sell on the cheap at bestbuy

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/ProductCategory.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=-8182

they also have a clearance center.

Re: [CGUYS] Stereo Receiver Tech Considerations

you probably should make certain the machine has HDMI switching. then you can
plug the dvd and the cable box into the back of the receiver on the way to the
tv and switch. a second feature that may not be necessary is that the receiver
can have the upscaling chip and software(converting dvd from regular to 1080p).
the receiver usually does a better job than the dvd player.

the avs video forum has a thread on receivers

for very little money, they throw in a 3 level spam blocker, antivirus for
email, and a place in the sky(web support)

i slice my email into accept, look at it, and never see it. i don't think i
miss anything thrown into the never see it. i have never done any fine
adjustments(like throwing away all the cguys political absurdity), but probably
could.

i purchased extra web space, because it is so inexpensive.

i also bought a second package and gave it to my wife to host her sites, which
i cannot see. much cheaper than D*I*V*O*R*C*E(sung by

at least look at it.

read about the experiences of prince william county va. they got rid of all
them illegals. they also have no factories.

we have fios here where i live. comcast cable was more reliable and same smoke
for same dollars.

fios was down for 4 hrs today. just came back up at 130pm. hasn't been down
once in the past two weeks. that's real good huh? mayebe it's because the
illegals they threw out of pw county are moving into pg county.(is happening

[CGUYS] Politics Hour

2009-02-15 Thread gerald
i have no interest in the politics being discussed on this list. could the
political discussion crowd agree on at least one thing. use a topic subject so
i can dump all this stuff into spam before i have to trash it and them dump it.

my recommended subject heading would be rush.

[CGUYS] TomTom software resolution

2009-02-08 Thread gerald
took the wife about 20 hrs to resolve the problem.

data is written from the sd chip to the tomtom memory and stored there. the
tomtom runs on the data stored in the memory. the backup is created from the
sd chip to a computer. wife had done that.

apparently, when tomtom builds these machine, they load the data directly to
the memory. the files on the chip were defective, so wife had a defective
backup.

she finally determined the defect when she realized the files on the computer
and the chip were the wrong size.

tomtom gave her the new software, and a year subscription for her troubles.

the files have grown, and barely fit on a 1 gig chip(890meg). is time to buy a
new chip.

Re: [CGUYS] Windows Installation disk with new computer?

2009-02-08 Thread gerald
None of the inexpensive machines i have purchased in the past few years have
included disks. the OS can usually be downloaded to disks from wherever it is
stored on the HD. a recent compaq had a defect in the cd when i attempted to
download. when i attempted to download a second time, i was unable to do so.
got a message of "one download per machine" or somesuch. if one reloads using
the disks created from the machine, all the Crap is also reloaded.

the MS disks i have received with machines from screwdriver shops, or from
mfgrs have been OEM disks. when calling MS for assistance, i have been told
that i have OEM disks, and they are not supported by MS.(been a while since i
did this).

i once attempted to load Asus OS software on a compaq or hp. this was not
allowed.

[CGUYS] tomtom 510 died

2009-02-07 Thread gerald
sorry to interupt, but this really is computer related:

my wife's tomtom 510 died a slow death. she tried to add a feature, and the
only map that showed up was Guam(apparently a common problem). after she spent
the day with it she gave up and called and got through to tomtom tech support.
they told her to wipe the chip and reload. she did. now she got nothing on the
tomtom. the software is on the chip. her software is around version 6.5.

this is also a common problem. there must be a standard fix for a common
problem.

anyone else have the problem and get it fixed. she now cannot get through to
tech support.

regards

it is a document of public record the FannieMae 10Q(quarterly report). i
presume it is made with Adobe software as the feds have long been a big

i cannot imagine they would lock it. however, when i try to do cut and paste

i tried to open the document in photoshop and security wanted the "master

Re: [CGUYS] "HOME" OWNERSHIP

tom, i'm not going to dig it up, but the wash post had a large story about the
poor lady in woodbridge who has a house in foreclosure. and is now owned by
fnm.

she upped the mortgage and took the cash to get a better house.(the house was
valued around 225-250k). i do not know what she purchased.

around 30% of the houses in the original group became distressed(foreclosed).

rents in the area dropped from $2000 a month to under $1000 a month(called a
dutch auction), as everybody was playing the sell it and move game.

she could not afford to pay for her new home, and the house she was specing
with $800 rent, as payments piti were around 2000/mo.

house was foreclosed by fnm and went into the pile. since we do supply and
demand on stuff like this, house is sitting on market at 130k or something like
that, while offers are at 80k.

this is a bit of a special circumstance, as this is prince william county
virginia, where the ruling fathers have decided to export all non-wasps, or at
least check them daily to be certain they are qualified as psuedo wasps. they
are a bit uncomfortable attacking afro americans, but all hispanics, indians,
have been abused to the place that they have left. fortunately for them, most
sold before the crash.

wrong wrong wrong.

a very high percentage of the houses being foreclosed are not HOMES. i'm
pretty certain that even FNM/FRE allowed up to 4 "home" loans. takes a very
divided family to need 4 "homes". this stuff belonged to either speculators,
or to innocents that decided to take their money out of their original home and
buy a bigger one, leaving behind a house/building.

CA,NV, AZ, and FL has a very high percentage of this. nobody wants to talk
about how many of the homes are spec owned.

either fnm or fre have 20,000 (forgot which) tenant occupied houses that they
are considering allowing tenant to stay. fre or fnm only have 5 total
foreclosed homes/houses in inventory. 90 % are not homes.

another large pile of the fnm/fre houses were not or even never occupied.
these are not homes. this is all spec investment.

i spec invested in houses a long time ago. could not get more than one fnm/fre
loan per house.

the wiper has been sitting for 90 days.

this data is about 3 trillion dollars worth of loans. about 30% of all home

that is totally incorrect.

No state requires citizenship, for a drivers licence, not even texas.

drivers licence in many states, MD included does not require a "green card"
and MD does not check. at least until very recently, anyone could get a social
security card. i have sponsored around 20 immigrants. all had driver licence
and social security card before the process was started. maryland wants 4 or 5
id's for drivers licence, but with a valid foreign passport, one can skate
around citizenship. if one has a valid I-94, one needs nothing else.

the Cheney administration wanted all companies to check all SS numbers of all
employees against citizenship/greencard records. they started that, but soon
discovered the two databases were incomparable, incomplete, and it took a very
long time to run through the hundreds of millions of SS numbers(none have ever
been deleted). early numbers, such as mine do not have any record of
citizenship. nobody cared in 1944 or 46, or whenever i got mine. they also
figured out(i think), that they did not want to open up access to the ss
database(good thinking, george).

i just looked, texas will also accept an i94 as primary id.

during summer season, prior to the Cheney administration, the mall was damaged
daily. not only did people walk on it, but there were about 50 softball games
a day, daily volleyball, rugby, soccer, basketball and whatever else needed a
field. weekly there was a polo(yeah, with real horses).

They still allowed and still do, in addition to that, the smithsonian
positively destroyed the place for a couple weeks or a month with some silly
festival. also a major activity or two every month(opera, 4th of july,
gathering for/against abortions, etc) if they would have only known, and paved
that thing from wall to wall when they had the chance. would have been very
cost effective.

the landscape area around the tidal basin is aggressively maintained. the
beds are dug up at least 4 times a year and the plantings replaced. the spring
bulbs are removed and dumped. i knew a landscaper who used to go to the
dumping site and take whatever he wanted. i do not know about the rest of the
plants. i do not know why this area is maintained and others are not.

for an example of very high maintainance, just look at the plot in the center
of Ohio drive between the 14th st bridge and 17th st.

of pdf, and not happy to open. second place, i am not too good with
distiller(yes i have it, does not everyone?), so i do not try to edit them.

i do not know what the standards are, and how they are set up, but a lot of
pdfs do not conform to adobe, and will not open.

tifs will open in windows photo gallery and can be edited. they are transparent
to the user. user probably does not know he is opening tif instead of gif or
jpg. my understanding is that tif is one of the more efficient methods of file
compression for pics.

batteries need cobalt to be high quailty. cobalt is expensive. cheap
batteries = no cobalt. other than buying directly from mfgr, i do not know how
to avoid this problem. i bought a nokia for my cell phone off of ebay. looks

comes with complete mfgr's warranty. it was airfreighted from CA. arrived in

i am pretty certain that it is being sold from a warehouse front of samsung.
buy.com is just a larger ordering house.

if you can live with the small lump in the back, this is a good option to

standard dlp goes through the light source in 1000(?) hrs. this is not much if

I think TV is a wretched source for both entertainment and for news. the main
purpose of TV in the USA is to establish brand name recognition.

about 5-10 years ago, my wife and i bought a tv. we got it along with an
Erol's(now blockbuster) membership. about 3 years ago, i bought the biggest tv
available and a gigantic sound system to go with it. all for movies. the last
two in theater movies we saw were Starwars (1) and Jaws.

i enjoy a number of the TV series that i can get from blockbuster. rome and
deadwood come to mind. i realize that these were not produced by a "major
network".

did we miss anything?

Modern 3.5" desktop drives are rated to survive a 2ms 300-350G 1/2 sine pulse,

lower ratings.

really?? 1000G sounds way, way too high. i'm not certain a steel billet

Re: [CGUYS] Computer backup software

2008-12-11 Thread gerald
a lot of people back up to a single external drive. i think this not a good
idea. i have not had good luck with external drive reliability. if possible,
back up to cd's or dvd's and grandfather them. for my company, we did a backup
every day just before closing. used append feature. dated each cd or dvd.
stacked them back on the spindle as they filled.

last year the state of Texas sent me a love note for not paying sales tax(my
company is in MD) for the past 7 or 8 years for $110,000 plus about another
100k in penalties. went back to 1999. i then got a bill from texas for
another 110k for not paying franchise fees. oh, and 100k in penalties. by
the time it was all said and done, texas wanted half a mil from me.

i dug out the spindles, created year end data, customer lists, etc for
1999-2007. hired a couple texas lawyers, and went about defending self. could
not have done it without the backups.

could not do it if i backed up external. data would be long gone.

backups were on win98, 2000 and xp. all were recoverable with "backup my pc"
to xp. this is very difficult if you used MS win 98 and win 2000 backup. i do
not think they talk to win xp backup.

Re: [CGUYS] Computer backup software

2008-12-10 Thread gerald
i like backup my pc by stomp. it is the old seagate-veritas-stomp now migo
that has been updated. I think 2005 is the latest version.should be cheap.
it does say NOT that it works on vista. i have not tried it on vista. i think
stomp disappeared.

hold the presses...MIGO just came out with
http://www.migosoftware.com/store/pc-backup8.html?SourceID=PCBACKUP_storehomepage_ShowCase3
  backup pro 10

there may be a better product out by now, but backup my pc 2005 did an
excellent job for me for years and made program transfers very easy.

using cheap backup software is like trying to impress someone with a cheap date.

if you think you will want to transfer your data to Vista some day within the
next couple of years, i would recommend you find a package that works on both
xp and vista.

you should post this comment on the Klipsch bb, where people pay a fortune for
vynal, macintosch, marantz, crown and other tube components. 1960 turntables
are worshipped. large horn speakers are a life within themselves. they may
send the tone of death down the ether to you.

the macs of sound.

Re: [CGUYS] LP to CD turntable?

2008-12-03 Thread gerald
we got an audio technica

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UKUDSE/ref=s9k2a_c3_at1-rfc_p-3237_g1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=1HZAEF4XG1H0TPZ03ERA&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=463383351&pf_rd_i=507846

comes with software. totally cleans up pops and crackles. totally acceptable.
is very inexpensive compared to the teac, and probably does the same job.

limits are:
1. no breaks between songs

  2 no song titles

ie it can't put in what ain't there.

[CGUYS] TuneUp Utilities

2008-11-29 Thread gerald
after reading about slow computers, i decided that my computer had slowed down
considerably for no real reason. i have 22 gig on a 500 gig HD, a quad core
processor with 3 meg of ram, etc.

when i had a mess on the last machine, i ran TuneUp, and it repaired a number
of problems. so i did a full copy to an external, downloaded TuneUp, and ran
it.

it found a number of nuisance/background programs to remove, fixed a little of
this and that, and probably increased the speed of page loading in FireFox 3
fold or 4 fold. big difference.

CAVEAT: i had run a similar program a couple years ago. it found some 200
errors in my registry. after i cleaned them all out, the machine would not
boot, and could not be repaired. i had to reload XP, programs, and data.

http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/

i am not affiliated with tuneup.
