A senior friend went out to a local electronics store and bought a new
Dell, 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium computer to replace his old XP
which has a failing hard drive. Unfortunately, the only program that
he has that will run on the new computer is his antivirus software and
AOL. Even his 6 month old HP digital camera's software won't run on
it. It will end up costing more to replace all the software than the
computer cost.

While replacing the hard drive and transferring over his programs and
data is a $250 option, it will still leave him with a old computer
with a slow chip. Is there a place he can buy an XP computer with a
decent amount of memory (2GB) and dual core chip for a reasonable
amount of $? Is there another solution for him? It looks like the only
Microsoft computer's being advertised are the Windows 7, 64 bit
version.

Thanks in advance,

Richard P.

Absolutely.

My in-laws live 300+ miles north of the border.

The services they can get and the cost are far, far different than what is
offered in the lower half of the province.

The farther you get from the border the more remote and rugged it gets.
Leave any of the population dense sites and it is like stepping into

Ontario's Health Insurance Plan would kill me and several of my friends.

I have a rare disease, and my meds run about $30k monthly. I take three
meds daily.

My friend Cindy Waters-Goodman is losing this option because she lives in
Ontario. The Globe and Mail has already locked up the story, but
(unfortunately) National Review has a good shot at it at
http://healthcare.nationalreview.com/post/?q=M2ZjMTk2NDllN2Y5MTMwMTdjOWVkODY3YTM4ZDU2ZGU

Briefly, Ontario pays for only one treatment, and if you have private
insurance which pays for one, then they pay for none. She needs two. I
need three.

We need reform. This isn't it.

Check out OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan)

I think they have the same rates you quote Tom.

By the way it is done very similarly to what the insurance plans do down
here.

They negotiate a set rate with Doctors and Hospitals etc.

The biggest difference is that they limit technology. Where we might have
1 CT machine and MRI for 25K they would be 1 CT machine and MRI to 250K.

One statistic that has been shown to be true down here, is introduce more
technology and doctors use it, plus are encouraged to use it to justify
costs of obtaining it.

Ellen I am a little curious.

OHIP did not usually cover prescriptions. That was a separate private
insurance.

Once you became a senior or for other circumstances the provincial
Ministry of Health might be the ones who would cover these things.

So what I am saying was that it was not OHIP that denied her coverage, but
the provincial authorities which did this.

Still does not justify it.

The still film market is minuscule when compared to the motion picture

wireline before today, and really can't see the need when landline
works so well. Unless maybe we're talking about wired lines in the
air? Even underwater lines lay on the ground.

It isn't an unknown term in the communications industry, I believe. From
the Glossary of Telecommunications Technology Terms at:

  http://www.netaction.org/broadband/glossary.html

Wireline: A system that uses wires or cables to transmit signals instead
of air-borne radio frequencies.

That's small consolation to someone who may not be IN the communications
industry, of course.

Re: [CGUYS] ATT Takes the Blame, Even for the iPhone's Faults

2009-12-15 Thread Ellen Rains Harris
I have a Treo Centro that I used roaming on CDMA in Canada twice this year
with Sprint. Haven't carried it farther than that.

My husband has a GSM Blackberry on ATT and we've used it in US, Canada, UK,
Korea, and Oz.

I recently saw a chart that showed the standard for all countries in the
world that support Cell phones.

CDMA is used outside the US, but it is not as popular as GSM. CDMA is
also used by Sprint.

When I was in Canada I could use my Verizon phone in a number of places.
It was only when I got into the Northern area of Ontario (Which is semi
remote) that I had problems with reception.

If I travel there again (which is likely as my in-laws live there.) I
will buy a prepay ATT or T-mobile phone so I can have reception.

By the way prepay is a pretty big player up in Canada over and against
contract.

International roaming for voice and 3G uses different frequencies than
North America. Quadband GSM phones for voice are common. Only a limited
number of phones have more than two frequencies for 3G, but they're
available for travelers.

Japan uses CDMA, and I think there are CDMA networks in Australia. The 3G
is WCDMA but not the same frequencies. Can you roam on the Sprint/Nextel
network with Verizon? I thought they used incompatible phones and
frequencies. Do Sprint customers need to buy another new phone to use
their 4G network?

PAYGO - buy your phone in Canada, or use a US phone with a Canadian SIM.
Roaming charges with some providers can be steep.

Yes, you can boot from an external drive, but that's not what he's asking.

When I worked with classified information, I had computers which would boot
normally from the HDD 0 with access to the internet, then I had a SCSI Jaz

access to network adapters.

Worked like a charm. The main thing we did to remind the user which

I do this with my Mac, and run Windows inside VirtualBox, but don't

You may be able to do this on a Dell.

Subject: [CGUYS] Consternation over Computer Constipation - help!

Once again I seek the wisdom that is so generously dispensed here. My
Dell
desk top just doesn't seem to want to do anything right...or quickly.
When

I click on links nothing happens. Sites don't load or only very, very
slowly, hence the constipation metaphor. IE freezes up and Fire Fox
(which

is what I usually use) is having the above problems. Documents also open
slowly. These problems seem to have occurred or become significantly
worse

since I installed the upgrade for the free AVG software on Dec 1, when the
previous version expired, so wonder if this has a role. I notice that it
now has a spy ware software, as well as the free Zone Alarm Pro version I
downloaded maybe 2 months ago (the previous free version didn't have this
as

I recall). I also have at least one other spyware program running, so
wonder if I have too much of a good thing.

My question is - I don't even know where to start to figure out what's
wrong

or how to fix it. Are there simple steps I should take to see if the
problem(s) get better? I can't even fix the message that says Firefox is
not able to show the Toolbar. Don't know if this is related, but in
Firefox, don't even have the back keys highlighted or functional. Tried
to

reinstall Firefox but got a message and wouldn't even let me do this. One
other thing - the program that is supposed to automatically begin to
download pics from digital camera to PC also isn't working (and it once
did). Couldn't get this fixed, either. Don't know if this might be
related

to other problems.

Is my computer now like a very old person or car, where too many things
are

breaking down and it looks terminal?? Should I just start uninstalling
questionable software? I'm afraid if I start tinkering, I'll make things
worse. I have 1 gig of memory. Should I add more? Will this magically
solve everything?! :)

Thanks as always

Randall

Hi all,

I will be taking delivery of a new Intel i7-920 Win 7 PC shorty and it
will come with 12 G of DDRR3 RAM and a 1TB HD to which I intend to add a
2nd 1TB drive that I just bought for a PC that is no longer going to be
used.

I have never used any RAID or similar configuration and am wondering what
are the pros and cons.

This is a home machine and in the past when I had multiple disks I always
backed up my critical data and media etc from my main drive manually to
one of the other physical disks, on the premise that, unless there was a
fire and the whole computer melted, the odds of 2 physical drives failing
at the same time are infinitesimally small.

But with 2 really large drives, and a lot of RAM and a very fast machine
coming, I am wondering if I should be using a RAID configuration, and if
so, what advantages or disadvantages does that bring.

Advice is welcome.

Michael

found another Pentium 4. Exchanged it. They bought the computer back,
working...

Had to start all programs and all...(what a pain). Now...if I leave it on
(I am not sure for how long before this happens, perhaps hours) when I
come back the green light and the HD red light are ON, not moving. The
monitor is receiving some sign because it is green...but the screen is
black. Nothing I can do to makes it work...

I have to put it off... If I re-start right way... it will go to a black
screen and will not start. It seems that I have to wait, 15 minutes, 30
minutos (to cool off?) for it to start. It then starts OK, no problem...

Where is the problem? Mobo, CPU, Memory?...

The fun never ends... Back to the shop?...

Thanks in advance.

Hi ...

My neighbor just used Windows Live One Scan and Clean on his Dell laptop
and it apparently has completely crashed his computer. When it tried to
reboot after the scan he could hear the hdd whirring and the screen lit
up for a moment with the Dell logo but then went to black and he can't
get a picture to come back onto the monitor (excepton trying the reboot
again, it will come back just momentarily). Then the mouse arrow appears
on the screen (again only momentarily) and then it goes to black, the hdd
(or something) continues to whirr and nothing else happend.

I looked at the Windows Live site trying to help him find a contact
number to call but can't find anything even close to a contact phone or
email.

The computer (several years old) (Inspiron 8000) originally had Windows
ME on it but he upgraded to Windows XP and has the XP CD but that won't
bring up a picture on the screen either.

Is this something mindless and easy to fix? (I hope!) Or will it require
a trip to the shop (assuming he can find a decent one. He's in Takoma
Park MD. Any suggestions?)

This message neer got posted to the group so I'm forwarding it from my
sent box. My friend phoned to say he was able to get the computer to
boot from the cd but called back to say it was short-lived. Within the
hour, the monitor had gone to black again. Any suggestions?

As always, thanks in advance for your help !!

Nothing so far has worked.
A curious tendency is for the web to get back to normal within the first

I can see the signal strength fade once we get to about ten minutes of use

I'll keep investigating.

Yes, it is possible.

During the installation process, it will say something like Install has
detected a previous installation of Windows. Would you like to repair this
installation?

And you may choose Yes and install it on the same partition as the other
one.

HOWEVER, when you do that, you will have to download and install years worth

digital modes of radio comms from analog, and have suffered a series

experiencing many of the same issues.

OTA digital is quite prone to all sorts of interference problems.
When OTA DTV works well it is good, but when it doesn't work well, it

Think about that in computer terms. Which you you rather have in a

Re: [CGUYS] Databases: Open Office Base?

2009-06-19 Thread Ellen Rains Harris

Constance,

If I were them, I would scan all the docs as PDF files, then index them in a
hyperlinked .xls file that serves as the index.

It's simple to do, you can throw the whole directory up on a website behind
a login and password, and with a reasonable scanner, they can do about a
five drawer filecabinet a week.

Further, if they choose to, they can bulk OCR them and make each page that's
legible searchable.

It's cheap and easy and I've done it with OpenOffice.

It's like this: I was visiting the offices of a small nonprofit dedicated
to promoting civic activism and getting out the vote. One of the staff
members gestured towards a filing cabinet and some banker boxes and said,
We'd like to get these [documents] organized and have a way to get these
out to our field organizers when they want them and when we need to send
them. They'd been using fax, U.S. mail, and hand carrying the documents
in the past. Right now, most of the documents aren't even in electronic
format. They have basic computers, of course, but neither they nor their
field organizers can afford the latest electronic bells and whistles (no
iPhones, for example). A lot of small nonprofits are like that.

So I was trying to offer them a few basic suggestions. FileMaker Pro
would be nice for them to use to index their documents, because it's easy
to use and, once it's set up properly, it's practically crash- proof. On
the other hand, it's expensive. Base is free, but I've never used it
(and neither has anybody else I know). Somebody else--
not me--will be doing the work for this nonprofit, but these are very
nice people and I wanted to offer them a few signposts.

They're really brilliant, politically; they just haven't had the time to
get really computer savvy, or the money for the latest computers,
webmasters, or IT workers.

needed earlier. From inside the beltway, a fairly simple VHF antenna
such as the venerable rabbit ears should work. However, these
digital transmissions are highly prone to all sorts of anomalies as
opposed to the previous analog mode of television signal transmission.
We have all now entered a highly complex and potentially troublesome

The formula is: db = 10 log(P2 / P1) = 20 log (v2 / v1) where P is power

12 db is an increase in power of about 15.8.

I bought a 12 inch netbook which weighs less than 3 lbs and has no optical
drive, and it goes in my bag and is with me everywhere. And it has most of
the apps that I need... open office, etc. And it does my day to day
computing.

I also have a 15 notebook which weighs more than twice as much and is too
heavy for me to carry comfortably on a day to day basis. It has the MS
Office suite, etc. which are pretty standard for most general operations. I
also have some desktop publishing apps.

Both of these use my Treo for remote connection wherever I need network
access. And each can access my server using Logmein Hamachi.

What do you do with a netbook? It's too small for day to day
computing. So what do you do? Email? Web surfing? Find
restaurants? Directions? Tweet? Wall scribbles on Facebook?

You write this condescending BS, but can't understand why people
think Mac users are elitist?

My son has one. He does not use it for tweeting or Facebook wall
scribbling. He takes it to high school. It fits easily in his
backpack because it's smaller than most of his textbooks. He uses it
for note-taking, homework, projects, reports, and research (much of
all this stuff being done at school). He has no difficulty in typing
on it. It's perfect for his needs. He loves it. His friends are all
jealous...

I'm sure your son loves his small inexpensive notebook, and it does what
he needs. I've been considering one, too. Some are quite nice and
convenient. They're simply not netbooks, except in the new redefinition.

I'm not being condescending. I'm annoyed that instead of using an accurate
description of a product, marketing depts. too often redefine names of
existing products to confuse people, either because of laziness on their
part or deliberate obfuscation. This is another example of that.

[CGUYS] A curious problem

I shared the printer, and attempted to connect to it on a new HP laptop,
also running XP Home. The laptop can find the printer, and when we try to
install the drivers, the install package scans the laptop and comes up with
Cannot install because your processor is not powerful enough to support
this printer. 1.2 Ghz is below the minimum of 500 Mhz.

It's not a networking problem; I have passed files back and forth between
the machines with no problem.

Anybody have any ideas, other than going through every driver in the package

At the risk of turning this list into a computer discussion list, I
have a question about AVG updates.

Mine doesn't. I've got three computers (one dual booting XP/Win7) with
AVG and all set to auto-update, and they've all been failing
(Connection failed). It shouldn't be my Internet connection, because
they're at two different locations (the dual boot at both).

I just tried to manually update and it was crawling along at 25-30
*bytes* per second before it failed. Minutes later iTunes was updating
at about 1MB/sec.

Is it just me?

This must be the problem that I have installing older software on a Vista

When I insert the application CD, a message appears that I don't have

According to the MS link that you provided, the only way to install the
software is to turn off UAC if I understand it. Unfortunately, Vista Home

software application that costs as much as the new computer.

Is there any way to install this software?

Microsoft Vista (soon to be abandoned by Microsoft in favor of Windows 7).

Further, the college that my child will be attending supports Windows XP but

running Windows XP so EVERYONE is familiar with this OS. The kids have used
Vista at their respective schools and don't much like it.

My question to the esteemed members of this listserv is: How/Where can I get

how can I get them in time to put them under the Christmas tree?

You can do that by

 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
 2. Under Pick a category, click Date, Time, Language, and Regional

 3. Under or pick a Control Panel icon, click Regional and Language
Options.

The Regional and Language Options dialog box appears.
 4. On the Languages tab, click Details.

The Text Services and Input Languages dialog box appears.
 5. Under Installed services, click Add.

The Add Input language dialog box appears.
 6. In the Input language list, click the language that you want. For
example, English (United States).

Then look up US International in the help files to figure out how it

Running individual runs to the areas can get extremely expensive, since

Will I have a problem with 13 unmanaged switches in my network bringing

I plan to also have a wireless setup but I like to use wired also as my

Considering that we may run Voip and computers in each of the 13 areas
the cost savings of using $15 4Port switches are very big. Am I missing

I got a matchbook-sized Bluetooth GPS receiver about the size of an XM
antenna (60 bucks) and subscribed to TeleNav on my Treo 650. As long as
you have a scent of a cell signal, you can get postion, directions,
compass... it's $10 a month. We also use it on my husband's BlackBerry.

We have two Garmins on our boat that give position only, and one mapping
Lowrance we use both in the car and the boat. The Lowrance has downloadable
mapping to an SD card. I personally prefer my phone's dynamic mapping
capability, even though it has a small screen. It will zoom up to be quite
useable.

If I want a more detailed map, I also have Google Maps on the phone.

(you'd never believe from the equipment that the boat never actually gets
out of sight of land)

I got mildly lost a couple of weeks ago, a phone call to my
sister (lives in the area) provided no real help (rush hour
and construction). I use the term mildly lost in, I knew
where I was approximately but not precisely how to get where
I wanted to go. I was also looking to get a car but was
reluctant to spend $1,000-1,500 for an integrated GPS in the
car since a top of the line portable GPS is ~$1,000.

Last weekend I went shopping for a GPS and tried one out in
Circuit City. I was in southern Maryland (Waldorf) and
picked out an address in Annapolis. It generated a route
that took US 301 to US 3 to MD 450 to the final destination.
This is at least 6 miles longer than taking US 301 to US 50,
which is a little longer than US 301 to MD 214 (MD 450 is
a two lane road, US 50 is 4 lanes and goes across the Bay
Bridge). The other GPS receivers didn't seem to get a
signal, there didn't seem to be a lot of sales help there,
so I left. Yesterday I went to a Best Buy, repeated the
experiment and the units there couldn't find the satellites.
Of course not, they're in a big steel building!

So is there any advice out there about what to get and what
to avoid? I go on trips typically once or twice a year where
this would be useful, so I don't see this as being big on
features, but it shouldn't be stupid either.

Re: [CGUYS] Computer won't Boot

Any clue what the error might have said?

Can you get to the BIOS setup?

Subject: [CGUYS] Computer won't Boot

PC had trouble with the video display where the picture went bad with
everything going diagonal. After several reboots, the computer and
picture came up fine but then the picture went diagonal again. The
third time it failed, a screen came up briefly announcing an error
before it all disappeared. Tried rebooting but now only the fans run
continuously with no activity on the monitor. Tried a different
monitor without success. Tried putting in the recovery disc and
booting from that without success. All it will do now is run the fans
continuously. There is no activity on the monitor except a blinking
standby light.

Any ideas? If it's not one thing, it's another...

Win XP SP3

Thanks in advance,

Richard P.
