A senior friend went out to a local electronics store and bought a new Dell, 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium computer to replace his old XP which has a failing hard drive. Unfortunately, the only program that he has that will run on the new computer is his antivirus software and AOL. Even his 6 month old HP digital camera's software won't run on it. It will end up costing more to replace all the software than the computer cost. While replacing the hard drive and transferring over his programs and data is a $250 option, it will still leave him with a old computer with a slow chip. Is there a place he can buy an XP computer with a decent amount of memory (2GB) and dual core chip for a reasonable amount of $? Is there another solution for him? It looks like the only Microsoft computer's being advertised are the Windows 7, 64 bit version. Are there simple steps I should take to see if the problem(s) get better? I can't even fix the message that says Firefox is not able to show the Toolbar. Don't know if this is related, but in Firefox, don't even have the back keys highlighted or functional. Tried to reinstall Firefox but got a message and wouldn't even let me do this. One other thing - the program that is supposed to automatically begin to download pics from digital camera to PC also isn't working (and it once did). Couldn't get this fixed, either. Don't know if this might be related to other problems. Is my computer now like a very old person or car, where too many things are breaking down and it looks terminal?? Should I just start uninstalling questionable software? I'm afraid if I start tinkering, I'll make things worse. I have 1 gig of memory. Should I add more? Will this magically solve everything?! :) Thanks as always Randall * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Constance, If I were them, I would scan all the docs as PDF files, then index them in a hyperlinked .xls file that serves as the index. It's simple to do, you can throw the whole directory up on a website behind a login and password, and with a reasonable scanner, they can do about a five drawer filecabinet a week. Further, if they choose to, they can bulk OCR them and make each page that's legible searchable. They have basic computers, of course, but neither they nor their field organizers can afford the latest electronic bells and whistles (no iPhones, for example). A lot of small nonprofits are like that. So I was trying to offer them a few basic suggestions. FileMaker Pro would be nice for them to use to index their documents, because it's easy to use and, once it's set up properly, it's practically crash- proof. On the other hand, it's expensive. Base is free, but I've never used it (and neither has anybody else I know). Somebody else-- not me--will be doing the work for this nonprofit, but these are very nice people and I wanted to offer them a few signposts. Re: [CGUYS] Apple Will Show You Net Books Done Right
I don't understand: Are you in charge of deciding what a netbook is, or isn't? I bought a 12 inch netbook which weighs less than 3 lbs and has no optical drive, and it goes in my bag and is with me everywhere. And it has most of the apps that I need... open office, etc. And it does my day to day computing. I also have a 15 notebook which weighs more than twice as much and is too heavy for me to carry comfortably on a day to day basis. It has the MS Office suite, etc. which are pretty standard for most general operations. I also have some desktop publishing apps. Both of these use my Treo for remote connection wherever I need network access. And each can access my server using Logmein Hamachi. You write this condescending BS, but can't understand why people think Mac users are elitist? My son has one. He does not use it for tweeting or Facebook wall scribbling. He takes it to high school. It fits easily in his backpack because it's smaller than most of his textbooks. He uses it for note-taking, homework, projects, reports, and research (much of all this stuff being done at school). He has no difficulty in typing on it. It's perfect for his needs. He loves it. His friends are all jealous... I'm sure your son loves his small inexpensive notebook, and it does what he needs. I've been considering one, too. Some are quite nice and convenient. They're simply not netbooks, except in the new redefinition. I'm not being condescending. I'm annoyed that instead of using an accurate description of a product, marketing depts. too often redefine names of existing products to confuse people, either because of laziness on their part or deliberate obfuscation. [CGUYS] A curious problem
A friend has an older HP All-in-one (PSC 2410) physically connected to an older HP workstation by serial port. Machine runs XP Home. Re: [CGUYS] ???Network Configuration - Wiring , Switches and speed
I have a number of unmanaged switches around our offices for a number of reasons and the only problems we've ever had are when we have overload due to someone deciding to run three computers in each cubicle... that can drag your badwidth a touch. I don't know how that would work with VoIP. - Original Message - From: Michael Drabick [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: COMPUTERGUYS-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM Sent: Thursday, November 06, 2008 5:03 PM Subject: [CGUYS] ???Network Configuration - Wiring , Switches and speed We are moving our office location, and we will be building out a new space. I am trying to find out if it is 1) better to run as many CAT5e/6 wires to the individual rooms plus any extras for the future, or 2) run one CAT5e/6 to each room and put an unmanaged switch in each room for the number of devices required.(4,6,8Port) They have four-port switches you can put in the wall, or even an external unit is fine, although less aesthetically pleasing. Running individual runs to the areas can get extremely expensive, since one run can be $100. Will I have a problem with 13 unmanaged switches in my network bringing it to a crawl? I plan to also have a wireless setup but I like to use wired also as my security blanket. Considering that we may run Voip and computers in each of the 13 areas the cost savings of using $15 4Port switches are very big. Am I missing something that will make me regret going with unmanaged switches Mike * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] cannot delete device from device manager
Yes. I have one machine in my office that insists that a Buffalo NAS device is actually an Iomega StorCenter. It works just fine, but I cannot change its mind, no matter how I try to convince it. - Original Message - From: Wayne Dernoncourt [EMAIL PROTECTED] Could the Zip drive be masquerading as a tape drive... * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Re: [CGUYS] GPS advice
I got a matchbook-sized Bluetooth GPS receiver about the size of an XM antenna (60 bucks) and subscribed to TeleNav on my Treo 650. As long as you have a scent of a cell signal, you can get postion, directions, compass... it's $10 a month. We also use it on my husband's BlackBerry. We have two Garmins on our boat that give position only, and one mapping Lowrance we use both in the car and the boat. The Lowrance has downloadable mapping to an SD card. I personally prefer my phone's dynamic mapping capability, even though it has a small screen. It will zoom up to be quite useable. If I want a more detailed map, I also have Google Maps on the phone. (you'd never believe from the equipment that the boat never actually gets out of sight of land) - Original Message - From: Wayne Dernoncourt [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: COMPUTERGUYS-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM Sent: Sunday, October 12, 2008 8:42 AM Subject: [CGUYS] GPS advice I got mildly lost a couple of weeks ago, a phone call to my sister (lives in the area) provided no real help (rush hour and construction). I use the term mildly lost in, I knew where I was approximately but not precisely how to get where I wanted to go. I was also looking to get a car but was reluctant to spend $1,000-1,500 for an integrated GPS in the car since a top of the line portable GPS is ~$1,000. Last weekend I went shopping for a GPS and tried one out in Circuit City. I was in southern Maryland (Waldorf) and picked out an address in Annapolis. It generated a route that took US 301 to US 3 to MD 450 to the final destination. This is at least 6 miles longer than taking US 301 to US 50, which is a little longer than US 301 to MD 214 (MD 450 is a two lane road, US 50 is 4 lanes and goes across the Bay Bridge). The other GPS receivers didn't seem to get a signal, there didn't seem to be a lot of sales help there, so I left. Yesterday I went to a Best Buy, repeated the experiment and the units there couldn't find the satellites. Of course not, they're in a big steel building! So is there any advice out there about what to get and what to avoid? I go on trips typically once or twice a year where this would be useful, so I don't see this as being big on features, but it shouldn't be stupid either. -- Take care | This clown speaks for himself, his job doesn't Wayne D. | supply this, at least not directly I used to have a handle on life, then it broke. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] Low battery voltage warning?
You have low system battery voltage. You need to change the battery on your motherboard. Likely it looks like a nickel or a quarter on your motherboard. Radio Shack is your pal. If you enter your service tag number into support.dell.com, you can find out what kind of battery you need. - Original Message - From: Ranbo [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: COMPUTERGUYS-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM Sent: Sunday, October 12, 2008 1:36 PM Subject: [CGUYS] Low battery voltage warning? Lately when I boot up my computer I get a warning that says something like: Warning - low system battery voltage, hit F1 to continue or F2 to run utility Nothing happens when I hit F1 or F2 and the only way I can get anything to happen is to turn power off and on. Today, I had to do this 3 times before it powered up. I've never had this problem before, until the past week and now seems to be happening more frequently. Any ideas on what's going on or what can be done? Is my Dell 8300 desktop in its deaththroes, about to crash for good?! Maybe I better leave computer on in case I can't restart it and not see any replies! Re: [CGUYS] Computer won't Boot
Any clue what the error might have said? Can you get to the BIOS setup? - Original Message - From: Richard P. After several reboots, the computer and picture came up fine but then the picture went diagonal again. The third time it failed, a screen came up briefly announcing an error before it all disappeared. Tried rebooting but now only the fans run continuously with no activity on the monitor. Tried a different monitor without success. Tried putting in the recovery disc and booting from that without success. All it will do now is run the fans continuously. There is no activity on the monitor except a blinking standby light. Any ideas? If it's not one thing, it's another...
