Re: [CGUYS] Vista Makes Photographers Cry

2007-11-02 Thread Tom Piwowar
Are you or the article saying that Vista won't read files that are on the
camera? If it will display them, I can simply move them, right? Are you
saying that Vista won't recognize files from a camera plugged into a USB
port?

One of the reviews says many cameras won't let you get at your files by
simply plugging the camera into a Vista computer. The other review said
Vista worked fine, but that review did not plug the camera into the
computer, it used a USB card reader.

On the other hand our Vista fans will insist that Vista is double-plus
good and will mince words to try to convince us that these reviews don't
say what they do say. (Our Vista fans also claim that Sigma is not a
major camera manufacturer. That would be true for people who buy their
cameras at Walmart or Office Depot, but not the kind of photography I'm
concerned with. Someone who does not know of the Sigma brand is not
serious about photography.)

My last post gave a link to an extensive list of camera manufacturers'
Vista compatibility lists. They list many cameras that do work and many
cameras that do not work. Some state that they are not going to update
cameras that don't work with Vista. My Olympus camera is not listed as
compatible, but the Vista fans say it is. Perhaps they will next claim
that the information dispayed on my computer screen is incomplete because
I am using a Macintosh?

Bottom line is that you should not expect compatibility. I'm not
surprised by this because there have been so many reports of Vista's
incompatibility with peripherals. Will the Vista fans deny this too?

My Olympus digital camera may be 5 years old, but it works fine. My
Minolta SLR is over 35 years old and I have no trouble getting film for
it or getting prints made, but Microsoft thinks I should rush out to buy
a new camera whenever they say so. No I'm not happy about it.

That may be what the other person is saying, but it's not true. Most cameras
work just
fine with Vista. There are six cameras in my household and they all work just
fine with
Vista via USB, including one that is nearly ten years old.

Go to your camera maker's web site for the only reliable information about
whether or not
there are any issues with your particular model. It is not likely that there
are.

The other person apparently can't be bothered to go to his camera maker's web
site, where
he would be able to read that his own camera is, in fact, Vista compatible.
When facts are
at variance with one's prejudices, it is comforting to ignore the facts, I
guess.

[CGUYS] Vista Makes Photographers Cry

2007-11-01 Thread Tom Piwowar
I just noticed an interesting sidebar in Shutterbug magazine (May, p 26).

many cameras will need firmware/software upgrades to be Vista compatible
and some won't work at all... What's this got to do with Microsoft's
plan to overthrow JPEG...

They mention that some major camera makers have no plans to upgrade their
cameras to work with Vista.

Shutterbug sounds bitter.

My take is that the camera makers are probably right. Few pros will be
using Windows and the few that are will be better off switching to Macs.

So, as usual, you left just a few bits out.

They mention that some major camera makers have no plans to upgrade their
cameras to work
with Vista.

They mention major camera makers? They mention Sigma. They don't mention
Canon, Nikon,
Olympus, Kodak, Sony, Pentax, Panasonic, Fuji, Casio, HP, or Samsung. Or anyone
else. Just
Sigma. Translating Sigma as some major camera makers is just a wee bit of a
stretch,
don't you agree?

You also neglected to point out that no plans to upgrade only refers Sigma's
older
models. Their newer ones are already Vista compatible.

And you managed to omit this: All is not lost since you can always transfer
images using
a CompactFlash card reader, which I guess most people do anyway.

many cameras will need firmware/software upgrades to be Vista compatible and
some won't
work at all...

Neither the author nor you provide any evidence whatsoever to support this
assertion. It
certainly is contrary to my experience.

What's this got to do with Microsoft's plan to overthrow JPEG... Shutterbug
sounds
bitter.

Well, you got me there. I guess this bit, which is in the same paragraph, does
sound
awfully bitter:

[MS's replacemawfullyt for JPEG] supports a wide range of features, including
multiple
color formats for display or print, fixed or floating point high-dynamic range,
wide gamut
image encoding, lossless or high-quality lossy compression, decoding for
multiple
resolutions, minimal overhead for format conversions or transformations.
Excited yet?

Part of the article makes it sound like hardware (firmware) another
part talks about the software. Could anyone care less about the

two cameras from one maker don't work he assumes there will be many.

My Olympus C-2100 is not on the compatibility list so as far as I am
concerned, Vista
don't work.

The current version of the software for your 7-year old camera is
Vista-compatible, and
free. I guess you didn't bother to check the Olympus site?

This magazine found that your method just hook the camera to the computer and
grab the
files off the camera drive doesn't work with some unspecified number of
cameras they
tested with Vista.

The magazine said nothing of the kind. There was not a single word about their
testing
any cameras at all, and it provided no shred of evidence to justify the use of
the word
many. It mentioned TWO older models of ONE camera brand (which I'd wager that
very few
list members have ever heard of, by the way), and it didn't say that they'd
tested even
those.

A different review posted to this list stated that one particular camera did
work with
Vista when the pix were transferred using a card reader.

What frightful horseradish. First, it was the SAME review. The one you posted.
And it
wasn't one particular camera, either. What he said was, you can always
transfer your
pictures using a CompactFlash reader, which I guess most people do anyway.

It's interesting to note that:

  - a statement that is critical of Vista gets inflated: the reference
to two specific models becomes many.

  - a statement that is not critical of Vista gets deflated: the phrase
you can always transfer your pictures using a CompactFlash reader
somehow gets translated by you to mean one particular camera.

Interesting, and most illuminating.

The magazine reported that Microsoft chose to make Vista not work with cameras
as they
are and expects camera manufacturers to retrofit their firmware to work with
Vista

Please quote the sentence where he says anything remotely like Microsoft chose
to not
make Vista work with cameras as they are. It's a demonstrably false statement,
and it's
not in there anyway.

Regarding foisting, I'm sure you meant, but accidentally forgot, to note that
he's
referring to the Certified for Vista logo and not to Vista itself.

Look, the simple fact is that Vista DOES work with most cameras, and with the
vast
majority of modern ones (produced within the last several years). It works fine
with all
six of the cameras in my household, including one that I bought in 1998. Not
one needed a
software or firmware upgrade.

Your comments on Windows would be far more convincing if they weren't so
intellectually
dishonest.

Poor editorship on their part. If not a specific number a percentage

Otherwise the writer looses credibility.

Remember descriptive words mean whatever you want them to

Why won't cameras work with Vista? Are they talking here about the
actual camera files, or are they talking about the camera software that one
is encouraged to install? I don't use camera software. Just hook the
camera to the computer and grab the files off the camera drive, whatever
they are, and save them as I want them saved. Am I missing something?

This magazine found that your method just hook the camera to the
computer and grab the files off the camera drive doesn't work with some
unspecified number of cameras they tested with Vista. The magazine used
the word many, but our Vista fans don't know what that word means.

Are you or the article saying that Vista won't read files that are on the
camera? If it will display them, I can simply move them, right? Are you
saying that Vista won't recognize files from a camera plugged into a USB port?

I don't know enough about the way the cameras are 'supposed' to work. I
only deal with files. I don't even have camera software installed on this
machine. I find no need for it. I certainly don't know enough to get into
a debate. I'm simply wondering if my camera won't work on a Vista machine.
