I can speak to the effectiveness and ease of use of Astaro as

educational license as the firewall at my prior job, and it worked
very, very, well.

They sell router sized boxes that do the same thing but you can use

I couldn't tell from web sites what the Apple routers can do.

My Netgear MIMO allows me to schedule when blocking occurs and to use
patterns for blocking (like runescape, or even rune to block
runescape.com and rune-hq.com).

I would think that if you couldn't find it via the web configuration
interface, it probably isn't there.

It is interesting to see them try to innovate the old DNS concept. In
addition to blocking they also provide statistics about internet usage by
tabulating requests by IP address. While I'm impressed, I wonder what use
such data could be put to. Can anyone here suggest how such information
could be put to practical use?

As for the blocking, SaaS is a much better way to provide this.
Everything is centrally managed. There is no need to install or maintain
any software on the client computer. It is also harder to bypass if you
can lock down the DNS address. Of course, a proxy server still steps
around this easily.

There's a difference between a lockdown and guidance. When you're around
to provide encouragement and rewards for doing homework and not getting
distracted by inappropriate sites, that's learning, not policing.

There are commercial programs that schools use to block sites. They
don't work in high schools. Students learn [they're learning something!]
how to circumvent the software. If your kid doesn't figure out how to do
this, friends will show how or do it for him.

Instead of relying on the airport directly, can you put a router between
the airport and broadband connection? Routers are cheap. A Linksys
router might do what you want initially, but, of course, there are ways
to get around the controls. Be glad that the problem isn't IM. AIM
searches for alternate ports if you close the port it uses.

State of Delaware schools use Blue Coat, http://www.bluecoat.com/. Try
their free K9 home version, http://www.k9webprotection.com/. It uses a
web-based database. Unless your kids are fairly young, they'll get
around it soon. Best thing about it -- it's free. Platform: Windows.
FAQ claims that a Mac version will be available late in 2007--maybe.

Can't OpenDNS http://www.opendns.com/ also do this [better]? Have
children figured out how to get around this too? Create an OpenDNS
account and try their controls. Use secure alphanumeric passwords on
your router/modem/airport.

Then talk to the kids and explain what you're doing, but not how to do it.

They should add a category for sites by sociopaths.

This reminds me of the one about the new dad worrying about his young kids
finding his nudie mags hidden in the sock drawer. You can't hide anything
from the kids. They will pilfer, investigate, and explore every place you
can imagine hiding stuff -- they WILL find it. I guess the 21st Century
version of this is the Internet. The kids will get around every filter or
block you put up, either on their own computer, your computer, their
friend's computer, or even the public library computer. Hell, I just
discovered I've got hotel room porn on my Comcast. All I can do is yell at
them AFTER they've viewed it some time when I'm away.

 What's the point?

There's nothing you can block your kids from seeing that they can't see
somewhere else. Guaranteed that they have at least one friend, most
likely many, whose computer isn't blocked. Set your default search
 engines to filter offensive sites.

The kids will see anything they want. Talk to them. Don't block them.
 They'll be fine.

 What are you afraid of?

How smart are the kids? Putting the address in the hosts file like
127.0.0.1 www.lots-o-porn.com would deny access to the web site, but
not if the kid new the actual ip address

Kids typically set up proxy servers to get around blocks.

It is probably more effective to explain to the kids that both your
firewall router and the ISP keeps a log of all the sites they visit and
that you can easily check what they have been doing on the Internet.

I appreciate the time and effort you put into helping me resolve the
parenting aspect of my problem. The circular logic of your last two

Perhaps I initially asked the wrong question. Or, more likely,
needlessly gave voice to incorrect assumptions about the need of my
query. To reiterate - Does anyone know if it is possible to control
access to particular web sites using an Apple router? I don't mind
sharing why but why is too easy to get side tracked into that. It is
the kind of question that everyone with an opinion on is right
about...in their view. I respect others approach to the parenting
aspect of the question but in this forum I am really much more
interested in the technical part of the question. This past summer I
ran across an online tutorial on this subject (being control of web
access as an alternative to an outright ban) where the author used a
Linkksys router as an example. The routers setup page was very
Windows centric. I just mean that there were a myriad number of
obvious and not so obvious choices and options to be made. Quite
unlike a lot of Apples software where many of the choices seem to be
predetermined for your best interest. Most of the time it is a
pleasure to just be able to get the work done without (being forced
to) indulging my curious side exploring the intricacies of a piece of
software. I haven't been able to find an answer on Apples support
pages. Maybe I could just switch to the Linksys router but I thought
it might be more interesting to first see if anyone else here had
experienced the desire to have this kind of control over the home
network and solved the question using the hardware I already have.

I can always go back to more draconian methods. I just see the
measured access control as a method of time management. Which is an
issue in the short run with regard to getting homework done.

Thanks for your help.

You should probably look at software to monitor where they are going, you
can put in one IP and they will find another and another.

Subject: Re: [CGUYS] controlling IP address access

I want to be able to control access to certain web sites my kids may
have occasion to visit. I have seen it done using a Linksys router
but have been unable to duplicate this with my Apple router.
 Am using OSX 10.4+
Apple Airport router (not the new Extreme model)

 Any ideas?

 Thanks, jim

How smart are the kids? Putting the address in the hosts file like
127.0.0.1 www.lots-o-porn.com would deny access to the web site, but
not if the kid new the actual ip address

Kids typically set up proxy servers to get around blocks.

It is probably more effective to explain to the kids that both your
firewall router and the ISP keeps a log of all the sites they visit and
that you can easily check what they have been doing on the Internet.

Thanks for the input.

Our issue here is too much time on the likes of Runescape and not
enough on homework!

Guess it is back the the heavy handed approach.
