I can speak to the effectiveness and ease of use of Astaro as recently as a year ago. I used it for years under its free educational license as the firewall at my prior job, and it worked very, very, well. They sell router sized boxes that do the same thing but you can use the software free on a junk computer that you put between the incoming network cable and your router. The deal is you site reports information to their data collection service for getting the software free and updates. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? I couldn't tell from web sites what the Apple routers can do. My Netgear MIMO allows me to schedule when blocking occurs and to use patterns for blocking (like runescape, or even rune to block runescape.com and rune-hq.com). I would think that if you couldn't find it via the web configuration interface, it probably isn't there. I wouldn't use the service to block anything from children or anyone else [I don't like any kind of censorship], but am noting that the feature is available. Use it judiciously. It is interesting to see them try to innovate the old DNS concept. In addition to blocking they also provide statistics about internet usage by tabulating requests by IP address. While I'm impressed, I wonder what use such data could be put to. Can anyone here suggest how such information could be put to practical use? As for the blocking, SaaS is a much better way to provide this. Everything is centrally managed. There is no need to install or maintain any software on the client computer. It is also harder to bypass if you can lock down the DNS address. Of course, a proxy server still steps around this easily. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Years ago, when my kids were younger, I too needed a way to control their surfing online. What I did was I built my own firewall using an older unused computer and a free Linux software product called Smoothwall. I have since moved on to a similar product called IPCop. Whichever you choose, both allow you to place all kinds of limits on user access. I appreciate the time and effort you put into helping me resolve the parenting aspect of my problem. The circular logic of your last two sentences escapes me however. There's a difference between a lockdown and guidance. When you're around to provide encouragement and rewards for doing homework and not getting distracted by inappropriate sites, that's learning, not policing. There are commercial programs that schools use to block sites. They don't work in high schools. Students learn [they're learning something!] how to circumvent the software. If your kid doesn't figure out how to do this, friends will show how or do it for him. Instead of relying on the airport directly, can you put a router between the airport and broadband connection? Routers are cheap. A Linksys router might do what you want initially, but, of course, there are ways to get around the controls. Be glad that the problem isn't IM. AIM searches for alternate ports if you close the port it uses. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? A router between the airport and the broadband? I thought the airport WAS the router?? The thing costs almost 200 dollars what does it do? Why have the airport there at all if he can spend 70 bux on a good router? Is that why no one will answer his question? Is the airport so hamstrung you can't do what he's asking? State of Delaware schools use Blue Coat, http://www.bluecoat.com/. Try their free K9 home version, http://www.k9webprotection.com/. It uses a web-based database. Unless your kids are fairly young, they'll get around it soon. Best thing about it -- it's free. Platform: Windows. FAQ claims that a Mac version will be available late in 2007--maybe. Can't OpenDNS http://www.opendns.com/ also do this [better]? Have children figured out how to get around this too? Create an OpenDNS account and try their controls. Use secure alphanumeric passwords on your router/modem/airport. Then talk to the kids and explain what you're doing, but not how to do it. Thanks for the link to OpenDNS. It looks very interesting. Interesting to note that one of the categories of sites blocked are sites that provide information about proxy servers. You can check URLs to see if they are blocked. I'm glad to see that Reporters Without Borders (rsf.org) and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org) are not blocked (yet) even though they have a lot of information about proxey servers. Re: [CGUYS] controlling IP address access
This reminds me of the one about the new dad worrying about his young kids finding his nudie mags hidden in the sock drawer. You can't hide anything from the kids. They will pilfer, investigate, and explore every place you can imagine hiding stuff -- they WILL find it. I guess the 21st Century version of this is the Internet. The kids will get around every filter or block you put up, either on their own computer, your computer, their friend's computer, or even the public library computer. Hell, I just discovered I've got hotel room porn on my Comcast. All I can do is yell at them AFTER they've viewed it some time when I'm away. -Mike __ Michel David Lowe Purcellville, VA -Original Message- From: Computer Guys Announcements and Discussion List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of b_s-wilk Sent: Thursday, September 20, 2007 12:02 PM To: COMPUTERGUYS-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM Subject: Re: [CGUYS] controlling IP address access What's the point? See my 12:29 post earlier in the day. The issue is homework. The sex is inevitable and will take care of itself. College entry is not inevitable. I'd like the option of blocking RuneScape and the like until the homework is done. Why not block access completely until homework is done, and put the computer in a location where you can see it, especially if online research is necessary. Give him his own ID and you keep the password. No homework, no password. When my son was in high school, taking a programming course, I locked him out almost entirely. The only thing he saw when he logged in was his compiler. I told him that when he wrote a program to bypass it, he'd have full access. Took about 2 weeks. Re: [CGUYS] controlling IP address access
I appreciate the time and effort you put into helping me resolve the parenting aspect of my problem. The circular logic of your last two sentences escapes me however. Perhaps I initially asked the wrong question. Or, more likely, needlessly gave voice to incorrect assumptions about the need of my query. To reiterate - Does anyone know if it is possible to control access to particular web sites using an Apple router? I don't mind sharing why but why is too easy to get side tracked into that. It is the kind of question that everyone with an opinion on is right about...in their view. I respect others approach to the parenting aspect of the question but in this forum I am really much more interested in the technical part of the question. This past summer I ran across an online tutorial on this subject (being control of web access as an alternative to an outright ban) where the author used a Linkksys router as an example. The routers setup page was very Windows centric. I just mean that there were a myriad number of obvious and not so obvious choices and options to be made. Quite unlike a lot of Apples software where many of the choices seem to be predetermined for your best interest. Most of the time it is a pleasure to just be able to get the work done without (being forced to) indulging my curious side exploring the intricacies of a piece of software. I haven't been able to find an answer on Apples support pages. Maybe I could just switch to the Linksys router but I thought it might be more interesting to first see if anyone else here had experienced the desire to have this kind of control over the home network and solved the question using the hardware I already have. I can always go back to more draconian methods. I just see the measured access control as a method of time management. Which is an issue in the short run with regard to getting homework done. Thanks for your help. See my 12:29 post earlier in the day. The issue is homework. The sex is inevitable and will take care of itself. College entry is not inevitable.
