Indeed in 8.2 was OK. Furthermore the problem seems staying in KDE,
as if you take newer Imagemagick and compile in 8.2 or 9.0 KDE
you get display working from menu

Are you trying to produce a statically linked binary? In
that case you probably would have to provide also -lpng.

I can't reproduce it. Furthermore display in a terminal does
not need to be checked as the command display can run from X.
Probably some package breaks update-menus.
