This could be fixed with an image of 4px in width and either 8px,
12px or 16px in height.
Oo...gotta say that trick sped it up quite a bit.

Maybe I can be corrected, but I believe this isn't a CSS issue. It's a
programming one. You can't put if/then statements into CSS - CSS
isn't a programming language.
