Judah L. Magnes (1877-1948)
Judah Leon Magnes was born in San Francisco, and grew up in Oakland,
California. He later became the first native Californian to receive
a rabbinical degree from the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati.
Magnes went on to serve at Temple Israel in Brooklyn (1904) and at
Temple Emanu-El in New York City (1908), one of the most influential
positions in American Reform Jewry. A few years later, Magnes headed
the conservative Congregation B'nai Jeshurun.
In 1909, Magnes founded the Kehillah, a union of diverse Jewish
communal organizations in New York City. He remained its president
during the entire time of its existence, through 1922, and is
credited with changing the emphasis from charities to social work.
With seemingly boundless energy, Magnes also helped to found the
Yiddish daily Der Tag, the Society for the Advancement of Judaism,
the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Join Distribution
Committee. He was Secretary of the Federation of American Zionists
and a lifelong friend of Henrietta Szold, with whom he helped turn a
small women's social group into the world's largest Zionist
organization - Hadassah.
Probably Judah L. Magnes' greatest work was done on behalf of the
Hebrew University in Jerusalem, of which he was a founder and the
first president. Dr. Magnes is given much of the credit for making
the University the world-renowned institution that it is today.
Magnes was an outspoken leader in the campaign for the establishment
of a Jewish homeland. His compassion for people - all people - led
him to appeal for a bi-national state of Jews and Arabs. He has been
called the Jewish Gandhi because of his constant work on behalf of
both independence and harmony in the Holy Land. Just before the
United Nations made its momentous decision establishing the State of
Israel, Magnes spoke before the world body. Unfortunately he became
ill shortly after, and was buried in his beloved Jerusalem.

I also heard shots fired from other points and there was considerable confusion The Death of Count Folke Bernadotte (1), September 17, 1948 STATEMENT BY GENERAL AAGE LUNDSTROM (2) I met Count Bernadotte in Beirut on Thursday morning, 16th September, and went with him to Damascus, where we spent the night. We left Damascus on Friday morning, 17th September, by air at approximately 9.30 a.m. (Arab time). On our way to Kalandia field (3) we received a message from Haifa to the effect that all aircraft landing at Kalandia would be fired on. As we had sent advance notice of our arrival and had received clearance, we discounted this warning as false and landed at Kalandia without incident. At the airfield we were met by United Nations Observers Colonel Bonnot (France), Colonel S~rot (France) and Major af Petersens (Sweden). With Major Massart (Belgium) as driver, the Count, Colonel Bonnot France), Lieut.- Colonel Flach (Sweden), Major De Geer (Sweden) and myself, we left the airfield to visit Brigadier Lash of the Arab Legion at Ramall ah. The rest of Count Bernadotte's party were ordered to proceed to the American School and to wait for us there. Before we started, I was told that every other jeep or car was fired upon at the Mandelbaum Gate (4). I then asked Count Bernadotte if it would not be wiser to proceed from Ramallah via Latrun to Jerusalem. This route would take an hour longer, but would undoubtedly be safer. Count Bernadotte answered: I would not do that. I have to take the same risks as my Observers, and moreover, I think no one has the right to refuse me permission to pass through the lines. If I do not go, I will be admitting that they [Israeli authorities] have the right to prevent me from crossing the lines. I agreed, and it was decided that after the meeting with Brigadier Lash we would return through the lines at the Mandelbaum Gate. We then left to keep our appointment with Brigadier Lash. After the meeting I asked Brigadier Lash for a guard to take us to the front lines and received an armored car, which met us on the way to the lines. En route, just past Kalandia, our car was fired on from a short distance (pistol shot) and one bullet hit the disc of the rear wheel. We then arrived at the American School (5), where we collected the rest of the Count's staff and proceeded to the Mandelbaum Gate and on to the Y.M.C.A (6) without incident of any kind. During lunch at the Y.M.C.A. a program for the afternoon was settled. Count Bernadotte was to see Dr. Joseph, Military Governor of the Jewish part of Jerusalem, at 6.30 p.m., and before that we were to visit the Government House (7) and Agricultural School (8) in the Red Cross Area. Three cars were ordered, but I decided that only two would be permitted to pass the lines to the Red Cross Area. One car was driven by Colonel Frank Begley, with Commander Cox in the front seat, the Count, Colonel Serot and myself in the back seat. The other car was driven by Major Massart, with the Jewish liaison officer Captain Hillman, Miss Wessel, Lieut.-Colonel Flach and Major De Geer as passengers. We went first to Government House. From the roof of the tower Commander Cox pointed out the different areas where there had been a lot of firing, the front lines and neutral zone, etc. The question was raised about eighteen Jewish men who had been brought up to the Agricultural School, while it was desired that still more should be brought in to clean up. Count Bernadotte would not allow that, of course, as it was against his decision. He asked the Swiss doctor, Dr Facel, representing the interest of the International Red Cross Committee at Government House, to come with us to the Agricultural School. When we came to the school the woman in charge was away and Commander Cox was not sure about the terms of the agreement. He wanted to look at his papers in the Y.M.C.A., and the doctor was asked to come with us in order that we might get his opinion on how to deal with this situation. The doctor took his own Red Cross car, and otherwise the order of the cars remained the same, with the Count's car last in the convoy. ~'e went from the neutral zone to the Jewish lines without incident, crossed the check-points and went on farther into the New City. In the Qatamon quarter we were held up by a Jewish army -type jeep, placed in a road-block, and filled up with men in Jewish Army uniforms. At the same moment I saw a man running from this jeep. I took little notice of this because I merely thought that it was another check-point. Many have sacrificed much to bring the Jewish State into existence. One such body was the Irgun also know as the Etzel group. The Irgun was a military group that refused to bow to political pressures in securing a state for the Jewish people. Much of the modern Israeli politics today stem from the Irgun and the organization from which they broke, the Hagganah. To give a brief history of this valiant fighting group, it must be known that the Jewish Yeshuv, the agricultural settlements, were suffering from Arab maunders who would cause mayhem with the attempts of the Jewish settlers in setting up their settlements. The British, who at first encouraged the immigration of Jews to Israel, now openly banned Jewish immigration. They became ineffective in providing security for the settlers. For this reason, the Hagganah, a Jewish underground armed organization was set up in. As Arab outrages increased, the members of the Hagannah split over the question how to react to Arab terrorism. A group of men, headed by Avraham Tehomi, split from the main group and set up their own organization to be more active in persueing the Arab terrorists. After continued increased tensions and rioting, the new group split. Half of the members returned to the Hagganah, which was controlled by the Jewish Agency, and the other half formed what was called Irgun Zvi Leumi, (Nat ional Military Organization) and aligned themselves with the ideals of Zev Jabotinsky. They rejected the restraint policy of the Jewish Agency which preferred to use political powers to forward the goal of reclaiming th e land. The Irgun began carrying out armed reprisals against the Arabs, which although provided relief for the settlers, caused political embarrassment for the Jewish Agency. While the Jewish Agency tried to provide a ima ge of the Jew as a moral person being terrorized by the Arabs, thus winning support from the non-Jewish world, albeit at the expense of the Jewish settlers, the Irgun moved into the vacuum and gave it's full support to th e settlers. In 1939, the British published another one of it's 'white paper' effectively curtailing immigration and causing other hardships on the Jewish settlement. The Irgun now turned it's attention to the occupying British forces . The Irgun began sabotaging the British government property and attacking their forces. The British replied with mass arrests but the perpetrators were concealed by their brethren who sided with them. With the outbreak of World War II, the Irgun split again, some forces deciding to fight with the British against the Nazi Axis powers. This group declared a truce and joined the British army and the Jewish Brigade. The se cond group, led by Avraham Stern, later known as the Stern Gang. In December of 1943, Menacham Begin took lead of the Irgun. With knowledge now of the Nazi holocaust and fate of European Jewry, the Irgun reversed its truce against the British and the policy of not allowing Jewish immig ration. The Irgun attacked British police stations, offices, and headquarters. They seized weapons and replenished their arsenal. The British began making mass arrests. Many Irgun fighters were driven into hiding. Menache m Begin was forced into hiding. He took upon himself the disguise of a religious man and spent much time in a Synagogue in Tel Aviv under an assumed name. From his long time underground he developed an appreciation of the religious Jews, which lasted the rest of his life. It is noteworthy to mention that he was the first Israeli Prime Minister to don a traditional skullcap and to publicly thank G-d for his successes. The Jewish Agency and their group, the Hagannah moved against the Irgun. The Hagannah kidnapped several of the Irgun's members and handed them over to the British. The Irgun's activities were not reduced but not stopped. After World War II, the Hagannah realized that the British were not relenting their ban on immigration, nor were they helpful in combating Arab terrorism. The three groups, the Irgun, the Hagannah, and the Stern Group (kn own also as Lechi ) combined to fight the British. The Irgun in a sensational attack blew up the wing of the King David hotel in Jerusalem, in May 1946, which housed the British Palestine Command. Warnings went unheeded and many lives were lost. The British were furious a nd carried out mass arrests. The Hagganah, ceased it's actions when it's leaders were arrested in August 1946, but the Irgun continued fighting. The British increased their troops to one hundred thousand men. The ferocity of the British reprisals increased including public floggings, deportations, arrests and hangings. In Warsaw, for example, Jews constituted one-third of the population. The Polish government, worried by the increase in Jewish influence in the country, not only did nothing to hinder the illegal immigration movement which the Revisionists organized in Poland, but actively assisted it. In 1936, Jabotinsky met with the Foreign Minister, Josef Beck, and created the infrastructure for collaboration. The Polish government hoped that the establishment of a Jewish state would lead to mass emigration of Jews, thus solving the Jewish problem in Poland. In November 1937, Avraham Stern (Yair), then secretary of the Irgun General Headquarters, arrived in the Polish capital armed with a letter of recommendation from Jabotinsky. He met with senior government officials and laid the practical foundations for cooperation between the Polish army and the Irgun Zvai Le'umi. Within the framework of this cooperation, Polish army representatives handed over to Irgun representatives weapons and ammunition which had been kept in special ammunition depots. The weapons remained under Polish army supervision until they were despatched to Eretz Israel. Some of the weapons were concealed in the false bottoms of crates in which the furniture of prospective immigrants was transported, or in the drums of electrical machines. When the consignments reached Eretz Israel, they were taken to a safe place, and the weapons were removed from their hiding place. When in Warsaw Avraham Stern was much helped by Dr. Henryk Strasman, a well known lawyer and an officer in the Polish Reserve force. His wife Alicja (Lilka) was also of great help. The Strasmans introduced Stern to the Po lish intellectuals and high officials. It was in their home that the preparations for the publication of the Polish periodical Jerozolima Wyzwolona (Free Jerusalem) were begun. It was Lilka who designed the cover - A ma p of Eretz Israel with the background of an arm holding a gun and the words in Hebrew: (This Way Only). This became later the symbol of the Irgun. In March 25,1939, senior Irgun commanders from Eretz Israel participated in a course held in the Carpathian mountains, instructed by Polish army officers. The course took place under conditions of great secrecy, and the i nstructors wore civilian clothing. The participants were not permitted to establish contact with local Jews, and the letters they wrote home were sent to Switzerland, inserted in new envelopes, re-addressed to France, and finally posted from there to Palestine. The trainees received military training and were taught tactics of guerilla warfare. When the course ended, they returned to Eretz Israel, Yaakov Meridor apart from three who remained in Poland: Yaakov Meridor, who was responsible for despatching the weapons received from the Polish army; Shlomo Ben Shlomo, who organized a commanders course for selected members of Irgun ce lls in Poland (Isaac Raviv was one of the participants), and Zvi Meltzer, who organized a similar course in Lithuania. The organization of clandestine Irgun cells in Europe had begun a year previously, and was mainly conducted among members of Betar. The plan was to train a cadre of fighters, who would immigrate to Eretz Israel illegally, bringing arms with them, to become a kind of commando corps. Avraham Stern was involved in organizing the Polish cells, and was assisted by Nathan Friedman-Yellin (member of the Irgun commission in Poland) and Shmuel Mer lin (General Secretary of the New Zionist Organization in Poland). The first course for Irgun commanders in Poland was held in the fall of 1938 and was headed by Aharon Heichman (a member of the Irgun General Headquarters), who was sent specially from Palestine for this assignment. Twent y four members of Polish cells took part in the course, which was conducted in complete secrecy. Wake up people, you are next. -- Home Seized After Son's Drug Arrest By Associated Press January 11, 2002, 10:53 PM EST ATHENS, Ga. -- Police have seized the house of an 82-year-old widow because they say she knew her son dealt drugs there and did nothing to stop him. Fannie Gresham's small home was seized Thursday under a state law allowing authorities to confiscate property linked to the illegal drug trade. Authorities also arrested her 50-year-old son, Tommie Top Dollar Gresham, on a drug charge after he allegedly dropped several rocks of crack cocaine and fled. Police records show 29 incidents of drug activity at the address since 1992 and authorities say drug dealers were caught numerous times fetching drugs from the house for street sales. Based on that, and police claims that the elder, widowed Gresham was helping her son's alleged operation, Superior Court Judge Stephen Boswell issued a court order in December allowing the seizure. Boswell gave Fannie Gresham 14 days to move her belongings. Her attorney, Jim Smith, likened the seizure to the widespread illegal taking of property and land from blacks that he says tarnishes America's past. They have never seized any drugs in this house. This lady is not accused of a single thing, he said. Police predicted more such seizures as they crack down on the drug trade in the city's troubled neighborhoods. Al-Qaeda members captured under such circumstances can be tried by military tribunals if they are unlawful combatants under the 1949 Geneva Conventions. The convention governing prisoners of war defines unlawful combatants as participants in an armed conflict who abuse their civilian status to gain military advantage: those who do not carry arms openly and do not carry a fixed distinctive sign such as a uniform or other insignia that would identify them as soldiers. Terrorists appear to fall into this category almost by definition, as they depend on concealing their identity before their attacks. If a prisoner is deemed an unlawful combatant, he or she is entitled only to a conviction pronounced by an impartial and regularly constituted court respecting the generally accepted principles of regular judicial procedures. This is a relatively low standard of due process, which military tribunals would almost certainly meet. But out of respect for our own values and traditions as well as public diplomacy, we should at least ensure that the rules governing such proceedings bring them up to minimum international standards of due process: a presumption of innocence, the right to choose counsel (although it may be from a list provided by the tribunal), a speedy trial, the right to confront and rebut adverse evidence publicly, and the right of appeal (which could be to a higher military tribunal). However, the majority of those who abuse alcohol or any other substance long-term DO eventually develop paranoid thinking in the extreme. It is very unfortunate that Cooper's information, most of which is valid, was compromised by his paranoia; he reached some conclusions that may have been fueled by his mental disorientation. Even if everything he concluded was correct, the world we live in is not so completely evil or negative as he presented it. It is an unprecedented assault on the constitutional rights of the American people, as well as on our fundamental principles of limited government and separation of powers. Watch out! EHPA is coming to your state! FLASHBACK TO CLINTON HEALTH-CARE The proposed EHPA would bring about government takeover of the health industry by the states instead of by the federal government. Note that EHPA's principal author is Lawrence Gostin, a former member of Clinton's discredited Task Force on Health Care Reform. EHPA would give each governor sole discretion to grant himself far-reaching powers. The state legislature relinquishes its power to stop overreaching by the governor until at least 60 days after his actions. The bill wouldn't allow the governor to be reversed just because his actions are unwarranted, oppressive, or overreacting to the threat. EHPA also suggests requiring a vote of the legislature declaring that the risk has disappeared before the governor co uld be restrained, something many legislators would be reluctant to declare. EMPOWERING GOVERNORS DURING 'EMERGENCIES' Here are some of the extraordinary powers EHPA would give to each governor: 1.Control, restrict or prohibit firearms, 2.Seize private property, including food, fuel, and clothing, 3.Impose price controls and rationing 4.Order people out of their homes into dangerous quarantines where there would be no guarantee of safety from violence or contagious disease. 5.Take children from their parents and throw them into public quarantines managed by government officials, and 6.Demand that physicians administer certain drugs despite individuals' objections an d with no provision for religious exemptions. Government authorities would have full access, without meaningful limitation, to every one's medical records. If the alleged emergency turned out to be grossly exaggerated or even a hoax, government need not ret urn the private records. EHPA would grant these powers to governors without any showing of a real emergency, and mer ely an isolated case of a serious disease, or even a misdiagnosis, could trigger the governor's seizure of power. Withou t any checks or balances, the governor would become both doctor and policeman. COMING TO YOUR STATE! The CDC and HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson have called for immediate passage of this bil l, and Nevada already held a hearing. Regular readers of this space will recall how easily--and willingly--I was seduced by this retro-cartoon of a car when I reviewed it for the first time in March '98. For model-year 2000, there are few reasons to alter my generally glowing opinion of this safe, spacious subcompact with an uncommon sense of humor. Perhaps the most important change is the car's increased availability, now that production is up and me-first consumer frenzy is down. I'm still a little grumpy about the contortionist requirements for reaching the backseats. And (this may be a first), I think headroom up front is excessive--for this 5-ft.-sixer, at least. Sometimes I feel like I'm riding along at the bottom of a pudding bowl, and the external wing mirrors floating along at forehead level both reinforce the effect and obscure my clear view of the apex of an approaching corner. But I remain a fan of the New Beetle; would recommend it to anyone considering an affordable subcompact; and applaud VW's deft touch in transforming a counterculture icon of the hippie-dippie '60s into a granola-chic symbol of the millennial '90s. And anyway, I don't have time to wax rhapsodic any further about the New Beetle. I've got a soapbox to climb, and I need this car to give me a leg up. I'm going to tell you a secret, and I know you're not going to believe me, so I'm going to carry on about the matter at some length: The solution to our present concerns about tailpipe emissions and fuel economy is already with us. That's right; we can drastically cut both pollutants and fuel consumption right now without incurring any new price but a reduced one at the pump. Diesel is the secret, even though too many folks reflexively and unwisely react as if it were a dirty, little one. A diesel motor like the 1.9-liter, direct-injection, turbo-charged gem available in the New Beetle (and in VW Golf and Jetta models as well) is 40 percent more efficient at making power than a comparably sized gas model. Moreover, it not only meets the most stringent emissions standards in the U.S. and Europe, it also releases 20 percent less greenhouse-warming carbon dioxide. Oh...it's fun to drive too. The syncopated rhythm of driving a five-speed manual mated to VW's TDI will amuse and perhaps startle anyone accustomed exclusively to the more feverish temperament of our ubiquitous gas motors. All-out sporty types, of course, are already howling in protest, I know. I concede tire-scorching burnouts to them--without regret. For those of us just looking to get around inexpensively, dependably, cleanly, I can only say, Shame on you if you don't give diesel a try. For me, the intellectual argument is the most compelling. It derives from the unique physics of diesel combustion. Unlike gasoline, a spark plug is not required to ignite diesel fuel. Instead, it is the massive and abrupt compression of pure, clean air that superheats the combustion chamber to about 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. At this point, a precise quantity of diesel fuel is injected as exceedingly fine mist directly into that hot air, where the mixture ignites spontaneously, thrusting the piston down its power stroke. Here is where the inherent genius of Rudolf Diesel's 1892 invention lies: Because of the need to compress air so dramatically, there is a significant difference between the capacity of an engine cylinder when its piston is at the bottom of the stroke compared to the capacity at the top of the stroke. This is the all-important compression ratio; and in VW's TDI diesel, for example, the ratio is 19.5-to-1. By comparison, a New Beetle with VW's 2.0-liter gas engine employs a 10-to-1 compression ratio. Even upon cursory examination, it's obvious that a diesel motor performs more work with each explosion of fuel in its combustion chamber--in other words, the higher the compression ratio, the longer the power stroke of the piston. Bush to Head-Up National ID System As previously reported here, Congress has recently directed the US Department of Transportation to establish model guidelines for encoded data on driver's licenses issued by states as part of the 2002 transportation funding legislation. The Congressional directive also instructs federal agencies to work together towards development and installation of fingerprint or retinal scanners at airports which will read and verify data stored on the license documents. The directive constitutes formal establishment of a national ID system under the leadership of President George W. Bush as chief executive of his administration. According to the Congressional report the system will be used for national security and to prevent fraud. It will also be used to stop underage drinking. The newly established Department of Transportation safety agency will manage a federal database linking state driver information. The 1993 Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA), codified at Title 18, Section 2721, will serve as the authority for this program. The Act ~requires~ states to release personal information from motor vehicle records for purposes of national defense (security) and matters involving national or regional emergencies; all under direction of the President. The DPPA also authorizes the Secretary of Transportation to collect and collate transportation related information whenever the Secretary decides such collection will contribute to the improvement of the transportation system of the United States. The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) has already drafted a national ID standard. One of the required features of the AAMVA standard is digitally encoded inclusion of Social Security Numbers -- even though it is often claimed by proponents that SSNs would not be included. The AAMVA national ID standard also incorporates fingerprint and digital photo criteria. AAMVA's standards director, Nathan Root, was recently quoted -- in an effort to counter opposition to their national ID scheme -- saying, they're giving these systems too much credit in even assuming that somebody would be able and interested to track everybody's whereabouts and doings. It took three days to track down his family in Scotland and the police offered to bury him in Israel. The family refused and paid about $5000 to fly the corpse home. On May 13, another autopsy was conducted, at the University of Glasgow and guess what? The hyoid bone at the base of the tongue was missing and so was the heart. Both were removed by Dr. Hiss. But why? No problem guessing why the hyoid bone was gone. It would reveal that Sinclair did not hang himself but was strangled by other means. But the heart..? Avi Leitner can only say, Our best guess is that Hiss is involved the black market trade in human organs. We can't prove that yet, but it seems the most likely motive for removing a healthy heart. Incredibly, a most unlikely source provides an even spookier motive. But let's get on with the story first. The Sinclair family started investigating Alisdair's recent life and none of his friends thought him remotely suicidal. Nor did they understand why he was arrested for carrying perfectly legal currency in the first place. Israel police explained that they suspected he was a drug dealer and under interrogation he admitted to have smuggled in thousands of Ecstasy pills the week before, though he did not know who bought them. Alisdair's brother James, of Selkirk, Scotland mocked the police version, noting accurately, that since he wasn't caught with drugs, he had no reason whatsoever to confess to the supposed crime. Enter the British government. Tel Aviv embassy official Suad Andraus was furious, stating, People don't just die in lockup. The British authorities demand that Dr. Hiss explain what he did with the heart and then return it immediately. Hiss explained that as a drug smuggling suspect, the heart would have shown signs of longterm drug abuse. Fine, so why didn't he return the heart with the rest of the body? According to Hiss: It's true we didn't inform the family in Scotland that the heart was missing. Frankly, we didn't want to upset them. How thoughtful, and returning the body without the heart wasn't in the least bit upsetting Hiss complied to the second demand and turned over the heart to the Sinclair family, or at least a heart. A not very convincing heart, at that. The Sinclair Family demanded DNA proof that this was Alistair's heart but Dr. Hiss refused, citing the $6000 cost of the test. The Sinclairs found the cost prohibitive as well but this time, the British authorities did not press the issue or conduct their own tests. A frustrated James Sinclair expressed his disgust with the inconsistencies of his brother's strange demise. Alisdair never had a police record and it is unlikely that he would turn to drug smuggling. And he repeats,Why would he admit to anything if his bloody suitcase was empty? My brother was an intelligent, well read man. He wasn't daft. Editor Dear NileMedia Reader: We have been getting quite a bit of mail regarding our constant references to 'Yiddish supremacists'. It is a term we coined at NileMedia to more accurately and easily identify a powerful American political movement that aligns its political agenda with Israeli governments. Being a 'Yiddish Supremacist' requires a certain state of mind. While most Yiddish Supremacists are Jewish, not all Jews are Yiddish Supremacist. For decades, Palestinians and their supporters have labored to distinguish between Zionist racists and individuals who simply happen to worship God in a manner consistent with the Jewish creed. I also refer to Yiddish Supremacist because they immediately recognize who they are. If I was more accurate and identified them as Ashkenazi Supremacists, the average reader would miss the point. The group I mean to identify are the Eastern European Jews from the Pale, who ended up being the elite in Israel and in the American Jewish community. Both groups exhibit strong racist tendencies, especially in regards to Arabs. I don't like to refer to them as Zionists, because that movement has been politically sanitized by a powerful media campaign led by the militant Yiddish supremacists at The New York Times. I personally have nothing against how any single individual chooses to worship or not worship a higher deity. The intent of my writing is not to convert anybody. Rather, I want to clarify a few things for the type of losers who worship Ariel Sharon. Their advocacy of repression does not go unnoticed. The historical descendants of the ancient people of the Holy Land, including the Hebrew tribes, are Palestinians who now practice the Christian and Muslim faith. The Yiddish are Eastern European Slavs delusional enough to attribute their lineage to the Eastern Mediterranean. A little DNA testing would clear up their minds and make them reconsider their 'Supremacy' as a 'chosen' people. Once they get over their bizarre mythologies, they will discover that they are just another northern European Slavic Klan who happen to follow one school of Palestinian religious traditions, a pre-Christian tribal faith that had a creator quite different from the Universal God. The universal message preached by a Palestinian named Jesus Christ clashed with earlier Abrahamic Palestinian religious traditions. And the rest of the story is Western history. In any case, I personally wouldn't care if Ariel Sharon and his thugs were followers of the Druid tradition. Many of Israel's founders were confirmed atheists who thought that Orthodox Jews were anti-modern embarrassments to the revolutionary Zionist movement and its race based elitist theories. It would be easy enough to revert to the standard accepted description of these folks as Zionist racists. But an old Baptist friend of mine convinced me that this particular label required an explanation of what a 'Zionist' was. You were than obliged to explain Herzel and Ben Gurion and Balfour and their criminal agenda to exile the native people of the Holy Land to make room for an Israeli State as 'Jewish as England is English'. This wise Baptist buddy also pointed out that the word 'Zion' has a sweet sound to the ear of many decent God fearing Christians. He reminded me that on any Sunday, thousands of Southerners, black and white, worshiped in congregations with lofty names like 'The First Zion Church of Tallahassee,' And they could well be singing a lovely melody about wishing they were 'down by the River Jordan, in old Zion,' You tell folks like that you are anti-Zionist and they think you are some kind of devil worshiper. But just mention the 'chutzpah of the Yiddish supremacists' and their domination of the American mass media to any matron in Des Moines, Iowa. You get an immediate recognition that does not require any additional words of explanation. No doubt, many folks who are both 'Yiddish' in origin and 'Euro-centric Supremacists' in their world outlook deeply take offense to being called Yiddish Supremacists. I can only respond that I take even greater offense that they have freely elected to be Yiddish Supremacists. There is, after all, a cure for these intellectually warped delusional social misfits. But it is a cure that involves self-examination and self-healing. It should come as no comfort to these bigots that I have no problem hurting their feelings. They have shown little regard for the welfare of others outside their mystical political tribe. Why would I want a Yiddish Supremacist to be comfortable practicing a political creed that has led to unfathomable suffering to the ancient people of the Holy Land? Perhaps, to a certain degree, the Palestinians are at fault for exporting the work of their ancient sages while it was still in its most primitive 'tribal' stages.

REALITY: There can be no doubt that Rushs aversion to the recently
enacted education bill (The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of
2001 H.R.1) lies squarely in his well-known, deep-seated, ingrained
opposition to any federal government role in the funding for or the
overseeing of public education. That is evident in his categorization
of the bill as nothing but a bunch of gobbledy-(gook) and his
derisive, mocking tone when saying, the bill seeks to level out
academic performance

However, by asserting that this legislation didnt even get the
support of Jumpin Jim Jeffords, Rush implied that even the
despised Jeffords, the Vermont Senator who handed control of the US
Senate over to the Democrats, couldnt stomach the bills wasteful,
misguided spending. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Senator Jim Jeffords didnt vote against this bill because he agreed
with Rush that too much money was being spent on education. The
Senator opposed this bill because, in his opinion, there was not
enough education spending in H.R. 1. When Rush criticized federal
education spending while simultaneously citing (but not explaining)
Jim Jeffords opposition, he wanted people to believe that Jeffords
did so for reasons similar to his. In other words, Rush committed a
lie of omission.

The number of destroyed homes varies in different reports from 45 in some, to 73 in others. In any case, the earlier terse communique by the IDF spokesman, speaking of a number of structures demolished out of tactical considerations and published as fact by the Israeli media, was grossly and deliberately misleading. The destruction was clearly intended as retaliation for the guerrilla raid in which four Israeli soldiers were killed a day earlier at the Gaza Strip border; a retaliation directed entirely against a civilian population which had nothing to do with the attack, and as such a violation of International Law, specifically of the Fourth Geneva Convention - and as such a war crime. This act would be horrific enough in itself. It is all the more so, being but part of of a long-term policy implemented at the long-suffering town of Rafah, which is divided in three: one part under the self-governing Palestinian Authority, another part under Egyptian rule, and bisecting them in between, a long and narrow Israeli-held miltary zone, designed to prevent contact between these two sundred parts and - in general - prevent Palestinians from having free acess to the outside world. This unnatural situation led to an endless series of confrontations and incidents over the past year and half. In response, the Israeli Army formulated a simple and brutal strategy: to extend and widen the buffer zone under its control by destroying Palestinian dwellings and creating a sterile zone in their place. Morning Edition anchor Bob Edwards on January 3 stated that U.S. envoy Anthony Zinni was coming to the region during a time of comparative quiet. In another report the same day, correspondent Linda Gradstein referred to the relative calm of the past few weeks. Other NPR reports have mentioned the recent calm (1/5/02) or the fragile period of quiet (1/7/02). What NPR means by this was spelled out most explicitly by Linda Gradstein in a January 4 report on the envoys mission. You know, there's been actually three weeks of relative quiet, she said. Only one Israeli has been killed in those three weeks, as opposed to 44 Israelis who were killed when Zinni was here last time in November and early December. What Gradstein didnt mention-- and what someone who relied on NPR for their Middle Eastern news would have little idea of -- was that this has been in no way a period of calm for Palestinians. In fact, in the three-week period that Gradstein referred to, at least 26 Palestinians were killed by occupation forces-- more than one a day. Media critic Ali Abunimah documented the killings in a letter of protest to NPR (1/8/02), starting with 13-year-old Rami Khamis Al-Zorob, shot in the head on December 13 while playing near his home in Rafah, Gaza. Most of the deaths cited by Abunimah were of unarmed civilians; six were minors, ranging in age from 12 to 17. But none of these deaths received much attention from NPR, leaving the impression that calm for Israelis was calm for Palestinians as well. One of the few times that the Palestinian toll was even vaguely referred to was i n this December 24 exchange between All Things Considered anchor Robert Siegel and correspondent Peter Kenyon: SIEGEL: There was a resumption of violence today, I gather, a shooting of a Jewish settler. They killed one Palestinian; four arrested. The army said they were all Hamas members Bu t the Israelis don't consider these military raids to be violence. They consider that doing what Yasser Arafat should have been doing, by their rights, which is arresting these people and rounding them up. The unequal treatment of Israeli and Palestinian deaths is a long-standing pattern at NPR; a FAIR study of six months of the networks coverage (Extra!, 11-12/01) found that 81 percent of Israeli conflict-related deaths w ere reported, but only 34 percent of Palestinian deaths. Strikingly, NPR was even less likely to report the deaths of Palestinian minors killed; only 20 percent of these deaths were reported, as compared to 89 percent of Israeli minors deaths. While NPR was more likely to cover Israeli civilian deaths than those of Israeli security personnel (84 percent vs. 69 percent), the reverse was true with Palestinians (20 percent vs. 72 percent). Of course, NPR is not the only outlet that has misreported the Israeli/Palestinian conflict by downplaying violence against Palestinians. The most memorable form of discrimination was against Jewish immigrants arriving from Asian and North African countries between 1950-1980. At the same time Israeli propag anda described Israel as a Home for all Jewish people! Only after a long struggle did the Jews from the East get formally the same rights as the rest of Israeli society. But even to this day they are the poorest and least educated section of the Israeli population (that is, i f we exclude the Israeli Arabs). For example 80% of the people kept in Israeli criminal prisons are from Eastern immigrant families. The Israel rulers had another chance to demonstrate the racist character of the Israeli state at the beginning of the 1990s when a massive Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union began. Zionist propaganda presented it as a great victory of Zionism among the Russian Jews. In reality most of these immigrants came to Israel not for ideological reasons, but because their lives had been destroyed as the result of the collapse of the Soviet Uni on. We can say that most of these people were refugees escaping the impending restoration of capitalism in the former Soviet republics. Most immigrants have a very negative view of the situation where the religious authorities control every aspect of private life and a small Israeli oligarchy ( of a hundred families from north Tel-Aviv) controls every area of the Israeli economy and the media. But, as a reporter throughout that period, I can attest that many of the COINTELPRO probes were directed at entirely lawful groups and individuals without any ties to Communism. Finally, in 1975, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Activities (the Church Committee) began to hold hearings and otherwise investigate COINTELPRO. The committee concluded that this FBI operation was a sophisticated and vigilante program aimed squarely at preventing the exercise of First Amendment rights of speech and association, on the theory that preventing the growth of dangerous groups and the propagation of dangerous ideas would protect the national security and deter violence. The Church Committee (named for Idaho Sen. On a Dec. 2 episode of ABC's This Week, Attorney General John Ashcroft not only did not deny the advent of a new COINTELPRO, but stoutly maintained that he will pursue whatever has to be done in the war against terrorism. He doesn't need congressional approval for this assault on the First and Fourth Amendments. During what passed for a congressional debate on Ashcroft's anti-terrorism bill, the American Civil Liberties Union organized a Coalition in Defense of Freedom in Time of National Crisis. Opposing parts of that bill, which became law, was the largest array of civil liberties organizations I have ever seen -- from left to right and center. Included were: The Center for Constitutional Rights; the Free Congress Foundation; the American Friends Service Committee; Gun Owners of America; the NAACP Board of Directors; the Rutherford Institute; and Amnesty International USA. Although the Soviets reported on their experiments in the open literature, the parameteres they defined were insufficient for duplicating the experiments, and some scientists in the United States questioned whether the whole matter was disinformation. It was not. Early CIA funding provided the wherewithal for a project launched at Honeywell, Inc. for a method to penetrate inside a man's mind and control his brain waves over long distance. At the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Maitland Baldwin, under CIA supervision, bombarded the brains of lobotomised monkeys with radio waves. According to researcher Alex Constantine, His CIA monitors noted weird excesses: in one experiment, Baldwin decapitated a monkey and transplanted its head to the body of another, then attempted to restore it to life with radar saturation. In 1964, CIA Director Richard Helms sent a memo to the Warren Commission, mentioning biological radio communication. Helms' theorising about such methods was truly reminiscent of Orwell's 1984. He said, Cybernetics [or computer theory] can be used in the moulding of a child's character, the inculcation of knowledge and techniques, the amassing of experience, the establishment of social behaviour patternsÖ all functions which can be summarised as control of the growth processes of the individual. In 1977 Dr. Sam Koslov, the scientific assistant to the Secretary of the Navy, was briefed on a number of current research projects. One of them, in progress at Stanford Research Institute was named ELF and Mind Control. ELF is the acronym of extremely low frequency electromagnetic radiation. Koslov didn't like the sound of that project and ordered it cancelled, but according to the Washington Post, the funding was merely diverted into a different project heading and continued to go forward. The following report, although anonymous, provides a detailed first person encounter with what may be government electromagnetic testing. It was published in an underground magazine a few years ago. It is actually a radar, microwave, and radio transparent shield for an array of communications devices on the roof of the building. And let us reverse this thought: virtually any place in the Tenderloin may be seen from the Federal Building. Wisner Jr. onto its board of directors. Most of the business press did not find this untoward and it certainly did not emerge as part of the US discussions on corruption at the highest level. Frank Wisner, as we know in India, was the US Ambassador from 1994 until this year and his entry into Enron must be seen in light of the scandal of Dabhol. Enron, like most US corporations, uses its close association with the state (both its elected and bureaucratic arms) for its own ends. US campaigns are financed by corporations whose money not only enables politicians to win elections, but it also buys businesses the state's power both for domestic subsidies and for the use of US power in the international arena. Frank Wisner, Jr. was a big catch for Enron Corporation. His lineage is impeccable, since his father, Frank Wisner Sr., was a senior CIA official (from 1947 until his suicide in 1965) who was involved in the overthrow of Arbenz of Guatemala (1954) and Mossadeq of Iran (1953). Wisner Junior was well-known in the CIA and he worked as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy and Under Secretary of State for International Security Affairs; his current boss, Kenneth Lay, Chief Executive Officer of Enron Corporation, also worked for the Pentagon during the US war in Vietnam. With economic espionage as a task for the CIA (see PD, 12 October 1997), there is little doubt that Wisner used this instrument during his long-tenure as Ambassador in Asian nations. A Wisner staffer told InterPress Services this year that if anybody asked the CIA to help promote US business in India, it was probably Frank. When Wisner was US Ambassador to the Philippines (1991-92), Enron was in the midst of negotiations to manage the two Subic Bay power plants. When Wisner left Manila in July 1992, Enron won the deal and began to manage the plant in January 1993. During Wisner tenure in India, he fought long and hard to secure various deals for Enron. He went so far as to boycott the India Power '96 -- Beyond Dabhol summit, despite being scheduled to give an address (this was part of a US advisory to companies to avoid India for six-months, a pressure tactic on India during the winter of 1995-96). Wisner left India earlier this year only after it seemed like Enron's place was secure. Enron, like most monopoly corporations in the US, uses money as a means to buy influence and power. To gain access to a lucrative contract to rebuild the Shuaiba power plant in Kuwait, Enron hired former US Secretary of State James Baker as a consultant who travelled to the oil kingdom to negotiate with his Gulf War allies for his new employer. The sons of George Bush also helped Enron win this contract despite a lower bid from Deutsche Babcock, a German firm. The Bush brothers also helped Enron in their deal to win a contract to build a pipeline from Chile to Argentina in 1988. Finally, Wendy Gramm (wife of Senator Phil Gramm) joined Enron's Board of Directors in 1993 after she resigned from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. This Commission, just days after Gramm's resignation, deregulated energy futures, thereby allowing Enron to earn 10% of its profits by adventures on the financial markets. Beside all this evidence, it appears hypocritical for Rebecca Mark, Chairperson of Enron Development Corporation, to declare that Enron's reputation is being attacked, and we do not do business under the table. The story does not end there. In 1991-92, Enron donated $28,525 to the Democratic Party and in 1993-94, it gave $42,000. These monies enabled Enron to send its executives on international tours with the late Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown in January 1995 (when Kenneth Lay came to India) and in March-April 1994 (when Chief Executive Officer of Enron International, Rodney Gray came to Russia). In the former, Enron was in negotiation for the Dabhol plant among other things (such as the $1.1 billion offshore holdings) and in the latter, Enron was interested in the marketing of Russian gas in Europe. President Clinton noted that Brown's trips resulted in expanded opportunities for American business in [the USA] and abroad. The pay to play project of US democracy is once again in evidence. The example of Enron and Wisner proves beyond a reasonable doubt that the US state is not a neutral actor in world affairs and that US transnational corporations are part and parcel of the corruption within the US Empire. The hearings in Washington on campaign finance reform do not bother with this level of corruption, for most of those who are running the investigation are beholden to business interests. Dollars by Ken Silverstein The cries of outrage coming from the White House over Republican threats to eliminate the Commerce Department have as least as much to do with self-interest as with fealty to the corporate cause. Through the department's efforts to promote exports, the Clintonites argue, American businesses landed foreign deals worth $47 billion last year. But a little cross-referencing of the companies thus helped and of campaign contribution records and internal Democratic Party fundraising memorandums shows that for both corporations and the Administration, to give is truly to receive. Early last year, for example, Saudi Arabia was looking to expand its commercial air fleet and examined proposals from U.S. and European aircraft makers. After being furiously lobbied by President Clinton and Secretary Ron Brown, the Saudis placed a $3.6 billion order with Boeing. Within six months of closing the deal, the company had laden Democratic National Committee (D.N.C.) coffers with $65,000, four times more than it had donated during the previous three years. At about the same time, Administration pressure won Raytheon a $1.4 billion deal with Brazil for building a satellite surveillance system in the Amazon. In the 1992-94 election cycle, Raytheon donated $175,110 to Democratic candidates. Export promotion - precisely what the Republicans have singled out for cutting - is at the heart of Brown's strategy at Commerce, and indeed of Clinton's strategy in foreign policy. When it comes to drumming up commerce for U.S. corporations, this Administration has outstripped its two wildly pro-business Republican predecessors. In Brown's War Room, bureaucrats monitor bidding on dozens of global deals, gathering intelligence (with help from the C.I.A.) and coordinating financing from government sources to give U.S. firms an inside track. More directly, Brown leads select groups of executives on commercial trips abroad. Last year corporations fought to accompany the Commerce Secretary to Brazil, Argentina, Chile, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Russia, India and the Middle East. Some 300 C.E.O.s applied for seats on the trip to Russia alone; only twenty-nine were chosen. Details of those trips have been obscure because Commerce has been stingy about providing information. That will soon change, since in mid-May the courts forced Commerce to turn over to Judicial Watch 30,000 pages of documents concerning which companies were picked, which were left behind and what the basis for the decision was. But from what I have been able to piece together from Ron Brown's V.I.P. Junkets published reports and from various internal documents (including some now ordered for release), it is already clear that the relationship of donations to access is like that of spring rain to garden blooms. Melissa Moss, head of the Commerce Department's Office of Business Liason, decides who accompanies Brown. She has said firms are chosen on merit and real business consideration. But, like her boss, she is also intimately familiar with party money matters. Prior to joining the Administration, Moss was a top fundraiser for the D.N.C. under Brown, and before that, for the Democratic Leadership Council, which Clinton helped found and once chaired. The group she assembled for Brown's September 1994 trip to Beijing is revealing. Embarking three months after Clinton extended most-favored-nation trade status to China, Brown's entourage included: ¡ Lodwrick Cook of Atlantic Richfield, which gave $201,500 to the Democrats between 1992 and 1994. Cook is also close to Clinton, who last June presented the Arco chief with a birthday cake during a White House lunch for executives. ¡ Edwin Lupberger of Entergy, who closed an $800 million deal to build a power plant in China. Lupberger is a personal friend of Clinton, and in the last election cycle Entergy donated $60,000 to Democratic candidates. ¡ Bernard Schwartz of the Loral Corporation, who negotiated deals that will net his telecommunications company $1 billion over the next decade. Three months before the trip Schwartz donated $100,000 to the D.N.C. ¡ Raymond Smith of Bell Atlantic, which has given nearly $200,000 to the Democrats since 1991. According to Democratic fundraising memos I obtained, Smith is also a party trustee, meaning he has personally helped raise $100,000 or more. ¡ Leslie McGraw of Fluor, which came through with $108,450 for Democratic candidates in the last election. McGraw, like several of the executives who have been picked to accompany Brown, is also a donor and board member of the Democratic Leadership Council. All told, at least twelve of the twenty-five firms whose officials made the trip to China are major donors or fundraisers for the President's party. What high level powers do, on a regular basis, cannot simply be a device concocted for a one-time trick. The ultra-rich obviously breathe together. So, it fits the historical definition of to conspire. What they do, day by day, year by year, and century by century, is simply their method of operation. Their way of enriching themselves and controlling those of the middle income. Once in a while, their natural collusion is interrupted, sometimes only temporarily, by an upheaval led by the better educated group, the middle class, a Revolution. Starting in the 1990s, even before that, two groups made their plans as to the Caspian Sea energy area, Afghanistan, and the southern Balkans. Oil engineers obviously knew that in a few short decades, the oil reserves of Saudi Arabia will be played out. A growing market for oil and natural gas is Pakistan, Red China, and points east, like Japan. The Caspian area is there to be exploited. Oil, natural gas. One pipeline was planned through the southern Balkans, the split-apart area formerly called simply Yugoslavia. Standing in the way was a strongman, Slobadan Milosevic, who took over more or less with the demise of long-time dictator Marshal Tito who with an iron fist kept the ethnic and religious groups in check. Milosevic was once considered charming and popular. Toppling him started with the Henry Kissinger design of wrecking the Yugoslav banks. Kissinger Associates have been a nest of clever snakes fronting for Big Oil and dictators and butchers worldwide. So, building on the natural friction between ethnic and religious groups in Yugoslavia, became the excuse for the U.S./British attack on the Belgrade government. The supposed justification, trumpeted in the oil-soaked, spy-riddled monopoly press, was the primarily fraudulent stories of massacres. In the Spring of 1999, that became the reason for bombing and invading Serbia and their province of Kosovo. If not so bloody and tragic, the whole event would be laughable. Mighty military and economic forces of the West pulverized a once united nation which had no air force or navy worth noting, and an army no match for the invaders. Furthermore, Serbia was traditionally pro-U.S. if not also pro-British. In thousands of years, Serbia never attacked or invaded any other country. In violation of the Geneva Convention, to which the U.S. and Britain are signatories, U.S./British forces knowingly bombed and missile- attacked hospitals, schools, and churches. They bombed structures on the Danube, for months thereafter blocking river commerce for a whole section of Europe. The Serbian Radio/Television Building in Belgrade was directly targeted and many of those inside slaughtered Who would rightfully dare prosecute the U.S./British leaders as war criminals? The International tribunals, made up of yesmen and cowards, are a dead letter. Think about it. If Serbia had an air force and a navy like the U.S., surely they had the right, yes, the duty, to in return, bomb and missile attack the United States. Fair is fair. Hey, the press fakers said it was a WAR. The attack on Serbia benefitted, some say intentionally, the Kosovo/Albanian dope traffickers. This exposes the above statement, and Chomskys public stance since Stones film, as a deception. Chomsky and his good friend and soulmate on the JFK case, Alexander Cockburn went on an (orchestrated?) campaign at the time of Stones JFK to convince whatever passes for the left in this country that the murder of Kennedy was 1) not the result of a conspiracy, and 2) didnt matter even if it was. They were given unlimited space in magazines like The Nation and Z Magazine. But, as Howard Zinn implied in a recent letter to Schotz defending Chomsky, these stances are not based on facts or evidence, but on a political choice. They choose not to fight this battle. They would rather spend their time and effort on other matters. When cornered themselves, Chomsky and Cockburn resort to rhetorical devices like exaggeration, sarcasm, and ridicule. In other words, they resort to propaganda and evasion. CTKA believes that this is perhaps the most obvious and destructive example of Schotzs denial. Anyone today who was around in the 60s will tell you that the Kennedys, King, and Malcolm X electrified the political debate, not so much because of their (considerable) oratorical powers, but because they were winning. On the issues of economic justice, withdrawal from Southeast Asia, civil rights, a more reasonable approach to the Third World, and a tougher approach to the power elite within the U.S., they and the left were making considerable headway. The very grounds of the debate had shifted to the center and leftward on these and other issues. As one commentator has written, today the bright young Harvard lawyers go to work on Wall Street, in the sixties they went to work for Ralph Nader. The promise of the Kennedys or King speaking on these issues could galvanize huge crowds in the streets. But even more importantly, these men had convinced a large part of both the white middle class, and the younger generation that their shared interests were not with the wealthy and powerful elites, but with the oppressed and minorities. Today, that tendency has been pretty much reversed. Most of the general public and the media have retreated into a reactionary pose. And some of the most reactionary people are now esteemed public figures e.g. Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, Howard Stern, people who would have been mocked or ridiculed in the 60s. And the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times, under no pressure to disguise their real sympathies, can call Limbaugh a mainstream conservative (12/2/96). What remains of the left in this country today can be roughly epitomized by the nexus of The Nation, the Pacifica Radio network (in six major cities), and the media group FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting).

Ruppert FTW January 11, 2002 - Even as Attorney General John Ashcroft today recused himself from involvement in any Justice Department investigation into the mushrooming Enron scandal, larger conflicts of interest - potentially more damaging to the Bush Administration -- are becoming increasingly apparent. The conflicts involve the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Harvey Pitt and the head of Congress' investigative arm, the General Accounting Office (GAO), David Walker. Both agencies are charged with investigating allegedly criminal behavior by the energy trading firm, once the seventh largest company in America, which has now become the single largest bankruptcy in world history and may soon become the largest financial and political scandal in American history. As new revelations of Enron's unethical and insider-based improprieties, apparently facilitated by more than $2 million in Bush campaign donations, continue to flash across TV screens on a daily, sometimes hourly, basis -- more serious allegations of criminal money-laundering activities by a respected financial expert suggest that what is already known about Enron's behavior is but the barest tip of a razor sharp iceberg that could sink the Bush presidency. Spokespersons for Pitt and Walker both denied to FTW in interviews on January 10 that there is any reason for the heads of these two agencies, long regarded as the last and best protections against unchecked government corruption, to recuse themselves from Enron investigations even though their respective agencies have key statutory obligations to investigate the growing scandal. SEC Chairman Harvey Pitt, who took office in August of this year, after most of the acts leading to the Enron collapse had been committed, was, according to a Jan. 9, 2001 report by the Center for Public Integrity, a partner in the law firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver and Jacobson. In that capacity he represented accounting firm Arthur Andersen, Enron's auditor, which disclosed in a press release dated yesterday, that in recent months individuals in the firm involved with the Enron engagement disposed of a significant but undetermined number of electronic and paper documents and correspondence related to the Enron engagement. This is significant because Andersen, one of the big five accounting firms, had routinely signed off on falsified financial statements concealing almost $20 billion in off-balance-sheet debt from stock and bond holders, regulatory agencies and Enron employees. Many of Enron's pre-bankruptcy 20,000 employees were barred by the company from cashing in their 401(k) retirement plans, primarily consisting of Enron stock, while key executives including Chairman Kenneth Lay, former President and CEO Jeff Skilling, and CFO Andrew Fastow reportedly personally made more than $1 billion selling Enron shares before the collapse. SEC spokeswoman Christi Harlan told FTW, The Chairman filed an agreement that he would recuse himself from votes in any matters where he had a conflict of interest. The investigation is being run by the enforcement division and they keep him [Pitt] advised. Once the Commission launches an investigation to go forward they just do their thing. There's no requirement for a vote until an action is recommended. Harlan stated that the enforcement division acts autonomously from any input from the Chairman's office and that the head of the division has management oversight for any investigations. This appears to be a different SEC practice from the long-respected partnership of SEC chairman Arthur Levitt and enforcement director Richard Walker who were known as a team for their single-minded and thorough non-partisan investigation of securities violations in the 1980s and 90s. Walker was recruited by Deutschebank shortly after the attacks of September 11th, 2001. When asked if, in spite of his past representation of Andersen, Pitt was confident that there would be no conflict of interest or any resultant influence on the Enron probe, Harlan said, Absolutely! Comptroller General of the United States David M. Walker, who heads the GAO, has an even more obvious dilemma. Until November 9, 1998 he was a partner, board member and global managing director at Andersen. As persistent questions bubble about Andersen's possible complicity in Enron's criminal falsification of financial statements Walker's past relationship with Andersen management raises a question about his own ability to investigate in an unbiased fashion. Kenneth Lay, the chief executive of Enron, has personally given over $100,000 to Bush's political campaigns, more than any other individual. Enron is best known as the largest buyer and seller of natural gas in the country. Its 1999 revenues of $40 billion has made it the 18th largest company in the United States. Texas activists say that this tight connection between Bush and Lay bodes ill for the country, if Bush is elected. ABU DHABI Saudi Arabia, under pressure from the United States to
cooperate in the war against terrorism, has defined Islamic holy war
against Israel as legitimate self- defense.
The definition was formulated during a Saudi-sponsored seminar on
terrorism attended by Muslim scholars from the kingdom and abroad.
The seminar was held as part of a Saudi campaign to defend the
kingdom and other Islamic states from charges that they have
encouraged insurgencies in the West.
The Mecca seminar termed terrorism as all acts of aggression unjustly committed by
individuals, groups or states against human beings. The Muslim scholars termed
Israeli aggression as the worst form of terrorism and jus
tified any retaliation against the Jewish state and its people. They said Israel and
Jewish communities abroad were responsible for anti-Islamic sentiment in the West in
the wake of the Sept. 11 suicide attacks in New Yor
k and Washington.
This [attacks by Israel] is the most dangerous terrorism to world peace and security
and its confrontation is a just self-defense and jihad [holy war] in the way of
Allah. the seminar, sponsored by the Islamic Fiqh Acad
emy of the Muslim World League, said in a statement on Thursday. Jihad is meant for
upholding right, ending injustice, ensuring peace and security and establishing mercy.
Terrorism and violence committed by the aggressor
who usurp the land, desecrate holy sanctuaries and loot wealth cannot be compared to
the practice the right of legitimate defense as used by the oppressed seeking to gain
their legitimate rights to self-determination.
Saudi officials have acknowledged that the United States has pressed the kingdom to
implement reforms that would delegitimize Islamic insurgency attacks. But the
officials said Riyad rejected any prospect of changing its
education curriculum that would undermine the stress on holy war.
War does not necessarily mean military confrontation so much as spreading awareness
to counter destructive ideologies and eradicating causes of the phenomenon by working
seriously to find just solutions to international
crises, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal said in an interview with the
London-based A- Sharq Al Awsat daily.
The Muslim scholars, completing a six-day conference, said terrorism also included
any act of violence or threat designed to terrorize people or endanger their lives or
security as well as damage to the environment. The
y said world conflict stems from the failure to solve the Palestinian problem.

On the morning of Jan. 8, Paula Zahn of CNN went into histrionic wide-eyed mode as she parleyed with Richard Butler (former head of the UN inspection team in Iraq, latter part of the wipe- out-Saddam lobby and now on the CNN payroll), coyly described by the lovely Paula as ambassador-in- residence. They were discussing the hot book of the hour, Bin Laden, la verite interdite (Bin Laden, The Forbidden Truth), by Jean-Charles Brisard and Guillaume Dasquie. It just appeared in Paris. Zahn: Start off with what your understanding is of what is in this book -- the most explosive charge. Butler: The most explosive charge, Paula, is that the Bush administration -- the present one, just shortly after assuming office, slowed down FBI investigations of al Qaeda and terrorism in Afghanistan in order to do a d eal with the Taliban on oil -- an oil pipeline across Afghanistan. Zahn: And this book points out that the FBI's deputy director, John O'Neill, actually resigned because he felt the U.S. administration was obstructing ... Butler: A proper ... Zahn: ... the prosecution of terrorism. And that's only the tip of the iceberg. From the American Patriots, through BuzzFlash (which seems to have an umbilical cord to the Democratic National Committee) to ultra-left sites, there's a menu of conspiracy charges that would sate the most indefatigable gourmand. To cite a by-no-means complete list, we have the charges noted above; we also have foreknowledge by the Bush administration of the 9/11 attacks, with a deliberate decision to do nothing to thwart the onslaughts. What else? We have the accusation that members of the U.S. intelligence community, possibly in league with Bush-related business operatives, used their foreknowledge of the attacks to invest large sums in put options, g ambling on the likelihood that the stock value of United Airlines and American Airlines would plummet in the wake of the suicide attacks. Don't stop there! The Internet boils with accusations that U.S. fighter planes were ordered to stand down on Sept. 11, although there was a possibility these planes could have intercepted and downed the suicide planes. Then there's the role of oil. Quite properly, Americans always relish charges that Big Oil is up to no good, and this appetite is being assiduously catered to. Innumerable columns begin with the news that the war in Afgha nistan is all about oil. From this premise flow tributaries of speculation of the sort made by the two Frenchman cited above. The trouble with many conspiracy theories is that they strain excessively to avoid the obvious, which is: Both under Bush's and Clinton's presidencies the U.S. has been eager, since the fall of the Soviet Union, to find some way to assist the hopes of U.S. oil companies and pipeline companies to exploit the oil resources of t he Asian republics, most notably reserves in western Kazakhstan. Similarly consistent has been the U.S.'s desire not to have oil from Kazakhstan pass through Russia. Until U.S.-Iranian relations are restored, that has lef t the option of a pipeline from Kazakhstan westward through Azerbaijan and Georgia to Cheyhan on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey or a pipeline south through Afghanistan to a Pakistani port. In tandem with these hopes to ship out Kazakh oil has been the hopes of getting a regime in Afghanistan sufficiently stable to allow Unocal to build its line and sufficiently deferential to the U.S. to arrest or at least boot out Osama bin Laden. U.S. relations with the Saudis were, as always, predicated on the paramount necessity of ensuring the stability of the regime without burdening it with unpalatable demands. If history is any guide, a lot of this diplomacy was no doubt clumsily done, in alternations between proffers of carrots and threats of the stick. But does this mean that the U.S. went to war in Afghanistan for oil? Surely not. If stability was the goal, then war was a foolish option. The Bush regime hastened into war because America had sustained the greatest mas sacre on its soil since Pearl Harbor, and it faced the political imperative of finding an enemy at top speed on which to exact vengeance. This isn't to say there weren't hawks inside the Bush administration who were lobbying for plans to overthrow the Taliban in early summer, plans of which the Taliban became aware, possibly conniving the September 11 attac ks in consequence. As for all those mad theories about permitting the September 11 attacks to occur or about remote control planes, they seem to add up to the notion that America's foes are too incompetent to mount operations unaided by U.S . agencies, or that intelligence agencies aren't vast, bumbling bureaucracies quite capable of ignoring or underestimating or
