Re: [darktable-user] Mask won't apply
Hi Hieke, firstly I apologise that I am using a gmail server and I believe this places my post at the top and offends some people. Secondly I have removed my signature which I now try to do on all occasions, but sometimes it slips through when I am rushed. I am just wondering if you have got the basic masking technique working now or are still struggling? I tried to give a simple example of how I use exposure masks a lot for dodging and burning areas. The drawn mask and within the drawn mask options the paths tool is one of my favourites. The feather and blurring of the drawn mask at the end facilitates a beautiful transition that is invisible. I am unsure if your difficulties with masking in your original post represented a technical problem with the function of masks on your specific computer or if you are still developing your skills and knowledge at working with DT and masks. I hope this post has caused no offence to anyone as I am just trying to help out a fellow DT user. darktable user mailing list to unsubscribe send a mail to darktable-user+unsubscr...@lists.darktable.org

Re: [darktable-user] Mask won't apply
Tnx. I also did that (new instance, adjust exposure slider) but like I said: it effected the whole image. 'First master the basics'… well… if the lines are too harsh, getting rid of those is part of the basics as far as I'm concerned. Otherwise it doesn't look like the masks aren't being mastered at all. So yes, I get those basics, but like I said before: I don't get this to be applied to my mask. That's why I asked about the blend mode before. I tried the feather and blur and so on, but it doesn't work, because it starts wrong with everything being applied to the complete image. I hope the following explanation may help you. I often want to brighten or darken a section of an image, similar to how I would have dodged or burned in a traditional film darkroom. To achieve this with a digital image I make a new instance of exposure and adjust the exposure slider (sometimes I deliberately overdo the adjustment and will return to it later). This adjustment moves the whole of the image's exposure, but then I use the drawn mask option which looks like a crayon. I then often use the add path option to very roughly select the area I want to apply the effect to. The transition will be harsh and obvious. To fix this problem I then move the feather radius and blurring radius sliders about a third of the way to the right (amount may vary between images). This feathering and blurring then creates an invisible transition. I return to the exposure slider and fine turn the strength of the effect. Forget the blend mode options until you have mastered basic masking techniques. I wanted to make that part a little less bright but I couldn't figure out how. The tone equalizer didn't help and the filmic module is too hard to understand for me. I copied and pasted both the image and the history so you get the context as well, for instance the inversion. (See attached file.) Re: [darktable-user] Mask won't apply
Hi Hieke, with respect I say that you seem confused about working with masks.
