Re: [darktable-user] Newbie

2021-04-10 Thread Terry Pinfold
My advice is not to fall into the trap of expecting Darktable to be a direct
Lightroom replacement. I still use LR to catalog and import/sort my images, but
when it comes to the editing, I just love the depth of control, options and
masks to be found in Darktable. You must read relevant parts of the manual and
watch videos including by my fellow Australian Bruce Williams. There are some
videos very technical videos produced by one of the developers, Aurelien
Pierre, which would help you understand the unique modules he creates including
Filmic. Filmic is an alternative to using base curves. Base curves are used to
imitate the out of camera JPG look that we expect from programs like Lightroom.
Filmic gives in my opinion a superior result without trying to be an imitation
of the out of camera look. It reminds me more of an analog film look.

Take home message is that darktable is really worth the effort to learn. It is
my favourite editing program.

Re: [darktable-user] Newbie

2021-04-10 Thread Martin Anstett

Hi,

I know this is kind of 90s these days, but it might make sense to take a
look at the darktable manual to get an understanding on the concepts and
modules.
And NO, darktable is no plug-in replacement for Adobe Lightroom. It is a
different program with different concepts, strengths and usage.

--> Manual: https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/

Highly recommended also the tutorials that Bruce Williams makes:
--> https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkqe4BYsllmcxo2dsF-rFQw/videos

And: you should consider to get a look at the darktable section of pixls.us:

On the other hand, the main reason I want to switch is because Lightroom 6 does not support X100V raw files. I have tried Adobe DNG convertor a

The Mac package works just fine. I’ve installed dt on MacOS using the Mac
packages up to and including Catalina.

My current installation of dt using the Mac package is very stable. So I
have no hesitation in recommending it to you.

Download the .dmg here:

Enjoy!

Actually I use Mac, which encourages the user to be idiots. There is a Mac
version of Darktable, but I have been advised not to install from that. Instead
I need to go through a process which involves quite a bit of command lines.
That is why I think it is complicated. I guess I can try it step by step.

On the other hand, the main reason I want to switch is because Lightroom 6 does
not support X100V raw files. I have tried Adobe DNG convertor a few weeks ago
and it did not work either. I am glad to hear that Darktable works for X100V.

I totally agree with Bernhard that we should not discard the original RAW
files. Sorry I did not make that important point clear. The DNG conversion
is just a temporary fix for unsupported cameras and not the best option in
my opinion. I am not sure what is lost in the DNG conversion process but
will always keep the out of camera RAW file regardless.

Hi Leong,
I can not comment on if your fujifilm works with Darktable, however,
unsupported cameras can usually be made to work in Lightroom and Darktable
by using Adobe's free DNG converter to turn the RAW file into a DNG.
Magically doing this allowed LR6 to recognise my Olympus TG6 raw files when
before it could not. So now I don't even need to do DNG conversion.
Darktable is a straight install for Windows. Also, I have LR6 and LR
subscription but always use Darktable in preference because it gives so
much more control and has great masking options to localise adjustments. In
my opinion, LR is like the automatic car for mundane commutes to the shops
and Darktable is the sports car that really brings out the fun.

Probably a dev(elopment) build would be needed. I build my own on

Isn't "apt" a *linux* package manager? and lightroom a *windows/macOS*

But what seems so "dauntingly complicated"? Basically, it's "run the

In theory, at least, the white balance should be set for the actual light
source alone, rather than the light source through the unexposed film, while
all handling of the film mask is later done by negadoctor, *after* the camera
capture has been through the camera matrix in "input color profile". The idea
is that you are first correcting for the light and camera color to get a true
"neutral" scan of the negative itself for further inverting and processing by
negadoctor.

The last time I checked, the picker in negadoctor was sensitive to dust,
scratches, etc and required a really clean sample area for good results; I'm
not sure if this has been improved by now or not (I would guess not). Anyway I
think the global picker would be seeing different data from a different point
in the pipe than negadoctor, so using that isn't quite in line with "negadoctor
theory"... but ultimately what matters is that you get results that you like,
of course. :-)

Re: [darktable-user] newbie help with old negatives

2020-08-14 Thread Miklós Müller
Thanks for all of you for your invaluable contribution to the journey I
started with film scanning. Using your input I now finally settled with a
minimum number of steps that gives me an acceptable start for a complete
film roll using the exact same steps for each slide. So here is my approach:

1. turn off base curve
2. set white balance using a spot on the film base (unexposed stripe
between slides)
3. use the global color picker to note the values for the white (well grey)
stripe between two slides, convert them to hex rgb
4. negadoctor: enter the hex rgb calculated in step 3 with the color
selector gui (not the color picker, because for some reason it gives me
different results. Set scanner bias to -0.1dB for a somewhat lighter, more
middle-balanced histogram
5. rgb curve: set black point to 25% and white point to 75% for more lively
colors (see this for a visual
explanation)
6. tone curve: apply "contrast - high (gamma 2.2)" preset
7. crop and rotate
(i attached these as a dstyle below, i hope i did it right)

I apply these setting to the whole film roll, so I get an impression about
how well I managed to set aperture and exposition over the whole film roll.
Please have a look on my last roll
, and share your thoughts on
the above outlined process, and possibly on the work I did during shooting
the roll.

Nikon FE, C200.

thanks:
Miklos

Ah, sorry, you thought bit deeper.
The film will not act as a typical lens-mounted filter (like
softeners) as it is too close to the object plane.
But lets consider this: if your film layer would be opaque you'd see a
difference between having it on the illumination side or on the lens
side. You'd still see the image if on the lens side but with
diminished contrast and thus loss of resolution. OTOH you might well
place an opaque screen at any place on the illumination side without
loosing information (just overall brightness).

Hi,
the influence may be negligible. In an ideal world, the film between

Our world is real.

looks a nice setup. I suspect putting in a bright 6500K LED bulb would help
and as suggested additional blue filtration might be good as well.
Advantage of LED is cool temperature so less problems with heat bending
negatives in the holder.

If you don't clip channels you capture data good enough for work.
Having older sensor might be a problem, since they tend to produce more
noise in darker areas but I would just overexpose a bit. Trying to get
proper color rendition from old films is pointless. Dyes degrade and
they do it at different speed. It will require further work anyway.

The role of the white balance module is explained here:

https://discuss.pixls.us/t/inverting-photos-of-color-negatives-with-darktable/9140/44

How much that step actually matters in practice probably depends on the
specific camera/color matrix being used, I guess.

Avoiding clipping is the most important thing, but also having some data to
work with is important, too. :-)

When you capture a scene under 2700K lighting, you're capturing very little
information in the blue channel. Using digital white balance adjustment to
"correct" this capture so that white objects display as white is similar to
boosting a very underexposed capture with respect to the blue channel. This is
something that people try to avoid by exposing correctly, for good reason. Now,
when using this 2700K source to backlight an orange-masked color negative, you
are compounding this problem - there's a lot of red spectrum hitting the
sensor, and very little of the blue (you can see it in the histogram).

Film scanners get around this by exposing each channel for as long as needed
for a "good" exposure, but you can't do that with a camera. What you *can* do
is adjust the spectrum of the light source to balance the orange mask, just
like in an analog darkroom. The good news is that you don't have to get it
"right", because you can do that digitally later... but if you can get it
"better", that's better, and probably especially so if your "scanner" is a
15-year-old sensor with a base ISO of 200.

That is a beautiful reproduction rig, but... if it's as old as it looks, I
guess it uses some kind of incandescent light source? If you want to make the
most of your camera's dynamic range, you probably want to use a very "cool"
light source (6500K, aka "daylight", or even add some gels to make it even more
"blue"). This way, you won't end up with such an underexposed blue channel in
order to avoid clipping the red channel; it will move them all a little closer
together in the histogram. This crudely approximates what film scanners do by
exposing the different channels for different lengths of time. It just helps
with not having to push the digital stretching of the blue channel quite as
hard. Take a shot without film loaded to get a white balance for the light
itself, and use that WB setting for all the shots, then use the negadoctor
module to further adjust for the remaining orange mask.

In addition to the links already provided for information about negadoctor
module, also pay attention to the tooltips when hovering over the slider labels
- there's a lot of information there.

And, just for my take on processing one of the old negatives, attached is an
XMP for the first one, which also uses the color balance module to further
correct some of the extreme color cast into something a little more neutral.
Note the use of the parametric blend to constrain the processing to the shadow
areas. You could do even better with more time spent on the masking, but it's a
quick example. :-)

Why don't you flip it in horizontal direction? If scanned from emulsion
side it should be flipped.

Darktable 3.2.1

My take only using the eyedropper tool from the negadoctor module in the
dark green area of the larger tree and a slight correction on the
dynamic range slider (0.61 db). Colors are a bit oversaturated. You can
tweek this in the correction tab of that module.

Hello,

I am quite new to raw processing with darktable. My primary purpose is
to "scan" negative films with dslr, invert them, and then do some post
processing. This is just a hobby, so I don't expect stunning results
at start, I just need something to begin with.

I can achieve pretty good results with new films shot by myself with
just a few clicks.

But I am completely lost when I am trying to revie my father's 40+
year old negatives. I do the same basic steps what I do with my new
films (i.e. white balance the film base on the right side, do an
invert with picker choosing the now white stripe on the right, and
then I there I am with a dull image seemingly lacking color and
contrast, etc.

I would be very grateful, if you could help me out getting started,
i.e provide me with a basic, repeatable set of steps which would bring
me to a somewhat better image.

Here are the links to an example nef file and an exported jpg to the
starting point where I currently stand quite helpless.

Another (somewhat better) example, where I used the woman's swimming

Oh it's been a long time since I was on a mailing list, I have to get used
to reply to the list again. As for the scanning resolution, I have to
resort to my 6MP Nikon D50, my budget does not allow for more ATM.

Here's the scanning rig BTW: https://photos.app.goo.gl/8dUqTJkvmsdm9BTY8

Depends, try color smoothing and averaging option. They do make
difference for certain situation like those palm leaves with that back-
lit sky.

Honestly speaking I don't remember. It took like 10 minutes to make it,
7 of them I was drinking tea and retouching scratches. Don't take it as
a rule. Your negative has very little details in dark regions of the
image, so I don't like trying to recover something that doesn't exist
in the picture. Same for highlights.

Lighttable mode → history stack → load sidecar file... choose JPG file.

Don't forget to click "reply to mailing list" not to the "sender only"

Hi Miklós,

Maybe these will help you with using darktable to process negatives.

This does need the latest darktable version (3.2.1), 'cause this is when the
negadoctor module was introduced. This module was specifically made for
processing negatives.

There isn't that much material available yet, but these three might help:

Testing Darktable 3 Negadoctor module (1):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgEqDqR514Q

Testing Darktable 3 Negadoctor module (2):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV_0v0pBOsY

And the video made by Aurélien Pierre, the developer of this module:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiNlHBZE888

There's also this thread on pixls.us:
https://discuss.pixls.us/t/inverting-photos-of-color-negatives-with-darktable/9140/42

Hope this helps.

My take on your second image:

1. JPG:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qiPsmmlaCdcNexnCa90x5gVxyswWL9M_/view?usp=sharing

2. XMP (generally there is no need to post, just load history from
JPG):
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tADB3DviM8_G8oi-rMcxiZVTMZ82X0T3/view?usp=sharing

Timur.

P.S. Wash old films in distilled water and use wet scanning if you can.
Take higher resolution if possible (12-18 Mpx for 35mm), it will help
avoiding ugly bluish artifacts around high contrast details on color
negatives. Don't enable base curve module.

Have you tried the new negadoctor module? See

search for the name.
