There is no libxen. There is a libxenctrl and a libxenstore. Upstream
uses the abiname 3.0 for both but don't provide a stable api. For

so this bug is not debian specific.

As I could not find a corresponding bug in the upstream bug tracker - only 
a similar one which did not mention the Sidebar module and which could

hope my try to set the forwarded address is successful. ;)

You need at least 24MB of RAM to use this installer.

This is not exactly true:

There should be a requirement for the graphical installer,
too, as it needs more ram.

And in #401889 is mentioned, that on powerpc the installer
needs more ram at all.


Please change this to prevent users coming in trouble because
having not enough ram.

If not, and we are out of time for Etch, I suggest replacing v0.40-2 in
sid with 0.39-3 from Sarge. It is slightly less featureful but it works
and is very well tested.

Ah, I see.  The .pm file needs to be installed as Text/Markdown.pm in
Perl's search path in order for use Text::Markdown; to work.
However, when I do that:

$html=Text::Markdown::Markdown(foo);'

it hangs, and when I type some stuff and hit ^D it processes it and

No, there is no reason. There are a template header. This part of the  
header is not filled automatically and I was to lazy to fill it by  
hand. :-/


I've an other remark, toy sujjest to do: rc.d webserver restart  to  
restart the web server.
The usage of rc.d is normally done by scripts, the humans should use  
the scripts found in /etc/init.d. This is why my translation is:

/etc/init.d/webserver restart

updates with the podebconf-report-po utility.

Sounds fair by me. However, I recommend we wait for the current
version to reach testing (we need to ask the release team for that,
because of the udebs).

Alastair, I would really like to see us separate upstream
development (new/fixed keymaps and fotns, etc.) and the Debian
packaging. Would that be possible some time?

What I imagine in cases like this one is having first a Debian patch
to add the new keymap...until we release a new upstream version with
this patch included, and so on

Moreover, the broken template is obvious debconf abuse. The information you
give here should be added to README.Debian but not interrupt installs of
your package.

I propose you two patches:

patch1: fixes the broken template, but keep it. I prefer my patch to the one
proposed by Thomas

patch2: removes the abusive note

In both cases, if you do fix this bug, please do NOT upload the package
immediately as the French l10n team is working on the French translation of
the templates. Instead, please send me the new debian/po/templates.pot file
after applying one of our patches and running debconf-updatepo.

I have the following in my .muttrc:
fcc-save-hook . =mail/%O

However, it doesn't seem to work correctly when sending a message. The
fcc is always set to =mail/ plus the user part of my email address. I
don't think that this is correct behavior considering the documentation
for %O under index_format. The documentation claims that %O should be
replaced by a list name or the recipient name when there is no list
name. In a prior version (the version with RedHat 9.0), it replaced %O
correctly with the user part of the recipient's email address.

BTW, I am reporting this as important as it seems to be a regression in
the UI.

(a) /usr/bin/php points to what you think it does, and
(b) the code in question doesn't include something that changes

if you want to verify this yourself, you can try downloading the php4
source package, installing the build-dependencies, and removing the
line in debian/rules that says:

CFLAGS += $(shell getconf LFS_CFLAGS)

then building the package. and seeing if you get trouble with the Zend
Optimiser with that package as well.

I see two options.

1. Take the library transition of exiv2 forward, or

2. Revert the version of digikam in etch to 0.8 via an epoc upload to unstable 
which doesn't have this issue as it doesn't use exiv2.

I'm pretty happy with either option, but understand you maybe looking at a 
greater picture.

The current state of libcommoncpp2 (1.5.1) and rdepends in etch is stable and 
supportable. Thus nothing needs to be done, prior to release.

I won't upload to unstable with an epoc..  Also please ignore, or rather just 
leave in NEW, the last upload (1.5.3) which does correctly carry forward the

logs (one referring to the current Xorg, the other being the last
log produced running XFree86 under latest Sarge). Of course, I would

So when you fix bugs in hunspell, you want to leave the bugs in the
programs that are statically linked to it. How great.


I have reported some hunspell bugs to László (I don't know if some can 
be security bugs). I don't know if they are already corrected (László 
have told me: I hope, I will solve the problem this month for OOo 2.1).
For example hunspell can generate more strings or more time the same 
string than myspell starting from the same dictionary.


For hunspell there isn't a program that expand all the dictionary, so it 
is very hard to know if it work as you expected.

two's time.

You tried a Sarge installation, which is somewhat outdated. 
The next release of Debian (called Etch) is already beeing prepared
and there are much improvements in this version.
It would be very welcome, if you could give it a try:

load the sparc-binary-1 from

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/etch_di_rc1/sparc/iso-cd/
(this is a test version (release candidat 1) for etch)

or an iso from
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/sparc/iso-cd/
(a daily build of the installer; you need internet connection
while doing the installation with this cd).

This symbol was added by enabling the assembly code, and at that moment
vorlon asked me to unexport it. It looked safe at that moment, and
packages didn't start to FTBFS because of the removal.

The FTBFS bugs appearing probably mean that the patch needed to be
updated. As the #ifdef PNG_HAVE_ASSEMBLER_COMBINE_ROW was replaced by
#ifdef PNG_USE_PNGGCCRD, the logic around it has changed. The
declaration probably needs to be moved directly to the C file using it
so that it is not accessible to the application compiling against
libpng.

Furthermore, re-enabling this patch will not necessarily be enough to go
back on the shlibs. I'm not 100% sure, but IIRC new symbols were added
in 1.2.9, and maybe also in later versions.

The burn package has dependencies on packages of cdrecord.  It would be best
if burn's dependencies were changed to wodim | cdrecord and
genisoimage | mkisofs to allow it to work with the DFSG-compliant cdrkit
fork.  Presumably no changes to the actual code would be necessary.

The original (cdrtools) is doubtlessly free software and even Debian did
recently did admit this fact, see:

The fork you are talking about, on the other side repeatedly violates 
Copyright laws.

Do you still like Debian to switch from Free original Software to a
questionable fork? As a note: The fork maintainers just started another
attempt to remove Copyright notices without permission from the Author.

Debian should not depend on a fork whose maintainers did not yet grok the
rules of OSS.

apt-listchanges file.deb says me, that he reads out the changelog and 
then, that is done, but not more.

According to the policy, UIDs and GIDs less than 100 are the same on all 
Debian systems and come from the base-passwd package. The adduser man page 
says adduser and addgroup are friendlier front ends to tools like 
useradd, groupadd and usermod programs, choosing Debian policy conformant 
UID and GID values --. However, the programs don't enforce this policy 
item or remind about it in the documentation.

The consequences of this bug in the worst case are the consequences of 
having non-conformant IDs on the system. Those in turn depend on the 
assumptions made based on the policy item.

I propose the following changes:

1. When adduser or addgroup is going to add an id  100, it prints a 
   warning message about policy to stderr: Warning! According to Debian 
   Policy, system administators shouldn't create UIDs  100.

2. The adduser man page excerpt says by default choosing instead of 
   choosing.

3. /etc/adduser.conf and the adduser.conf man page include in their 
   documentation of FIRST_SYSTEM_UID the note: Please note that system 
   software may assume that UIDs less than 100 are unallocated.

Bug#401405: Further information and patch

I've been browsing the sources a bit, and the primary case is a bit clearer 
now. In backend/usb-unix.c, in open_device and list_devices is a loop that is 
iterating over all possible USB printers and trying to match them against the 
given URI. It always tries /dev/usblp%d, /dev/usb/lp%d 
and /dev/usb/usblb%d for any given index and the error handling here is 
broken - it only reports the errno value of the last attempt to open a 
printer, and since I don't have 16 printers that is always ENOENT. The fact 
that it got an EACCESS while opening /dev/usb/lp0 is totally left out.
I think the algorithm to better diagnose errors goes like this:
1. If all open() calls set errno=ENOENT, signal that no printers were found. 
This could also be done using stat(), no need to call open().
2. If any printers were present but could not be opened, the fact and the 
reason should go into a logfile. If the search does not find the requested 
printer, the fact that not all printers could be probed should be returned 
and a hint to look into the logfile.
3. If you could probe them all, just return whether the requested printer was 
found.

I'm not sure how this should be handled in the case of list_devices, either it 
should simply print five question marks for the five fields it otherwise 
fills with the URI and other data or an error message. I took the easy way 
out using the error message.

I have attached the modified usb-unix.c. Changes/Notes:
- It now correctly gives me an access denied error in the webfrontend and 
works as described above.
- When invoking the backend without arguments, it now either probes the 
printer for its ID or gives an errormessage.
- I marked a bogus check for EBUSY.
- In the whole CUPS sourcecode I found cases where sprintf() was used 
(potential buffer overflows) or snprintf() used wrong (snprintf() can leave 
an unterminated string when the buffer is too small). I'd suggest using an 
xsnprintf()-wrapper, similarly to xalloc() either formatting the string into 
the supplied buffer or invoking exit() - the code isn't prepared to handle 
that error anyway, so there's no way to continue. This last point would merit 
a whole code audit.
- I find it also astonishing how many magic numbers are used, as if using a 
buffer of size 255 or 1024 would magically make your code correct...
- All driver backends seem to take similar arguments, except one of 
them. 'ipp' takes a variable number of files to print. In fact I wonder why 
there is no central main() function for commandline handling etc that then 
only calls the implementations from the particular backend. There's a lot of 
code duplication going on.
- There's a weird mixture of tabs and spaces in the files. I only preserved 
the two spaces indentation depth and didn't use any tabs, but I'd say it 
would be worth running the whole code through an autoindenter.
- There is some code in cups-deviced.c that I don't understand. When invoking 
the backend, it code first checks if either group or others have 
read/write/execute permissions on the backend and if yes, it calls seteuid() 
with the user ID of 'lp'. So, by just removing read and execute permissions 
on the backend, we can make cupsd call it with root permissions (it then 
fails without meaningful error when invoking foomatic-rip). I find this idea 
flawed. Also, quote from the (default) configfile:
  # Note: the server must be run initially as root to support the
  # default IPP port of 631.  It changes users whenever an external
  # program is run...
IOW, this comment is simply a lie and keeping root privileges is a possible 
security risk. Well, not that anyone sane would be running CUPS in a hostile 
network anyway...

Okay, so much for that. Sorry for drifting of into ranting towards the end, 
but I hope the info was at least helpful. Question on that: is there any 
packaged version of 1.3 already? I would have preferred hacking on that one 
and not on a released version...

Also, you (the maintainers) probably have a connection to the upstream CUPS 
developers, could you ask them if they could enable bug-reporting without 
creating yet another account to log into their website? I find this extremely 
annoying...

currently, dpkg is able to log status change updates and actions to a
file. Would it also be possible to log dpkg warning messages etc. to
some file as well? Some of these messages (like `unable to delete old
directory') are good indicators of garbage left after package upgraded
or removals and it is usually a good idea to investigate such situations
to keep the real filesystem as close as possible to the package managers
notion about how the filesystem should look like.
However, with many packages upgraded at once on the one hand and limited
scrollback buffers (i.e. on console) on the other hand, it is really
hard to catch all these messages on the fly. So logging these messages
somewhere would be really helpful.

Yes, it provides mechanisms for that and doesn't inform the user of the 
consequences. That is, as adduser promises to be a friendly front end, it 
shouldn't expect the local system administrator to know the traps in the
Debian Policy.

zaptel, as far as I can tell is building fine against 2.6.18 which is the 
target kernel for etch.

We only have a matter of days/ weeks before etch freezes, so I wouldn't like 
to introduce any late changes to zaptel at this stage.

Also given the short timeframe before etch freezes, we should be working to 
getting the pkg-voip packages to a sensible state for etch...

Thus I'll give this bug a relatively low priority until etch releases.

Irrelevant for this discussion. I can't add GPLed stuff to the
package because it then  would be GPL. The other dictionaries in the OOo
source are LGPL, though.

You can package it externally or make it build from the ispell one, but
I will *not* include it in -dictionaries due it's being GPL.

I told that in the bug report that it's G`PL and can't add it.
If you don't read it/understand it and then complain, well...

AFAIK it works only on the _non_ pro models, it really writes the
registers of the intel i945 graphic card.

I think that mactel-linux has an utility to do that, but I can't test
it. If you are interested try the utils (available in the svn
repository) of mactel-linux. If they woks we could make these programs
converge to a common interface and then put them in the same package.

Bug#402309: Multiple credit-card charges for single Magnatunes purchase

When you make a purchase using the Magnatunes integrated store, Amarok 
issues the payment instruction multiple times, resulting in overcharging.


While Magnatunes are very good at picking up on this (it seems it's an 
upstream bug that's happening to a number of people) and reversing the 
charge, it strikes me that a bug that costs users *actual money* 
deserves at the very least a serious tag. (Credit card fees and 
currency exchange rates means you don't get the full amount back if 
you're not paying in US dollars.)


Reproducing the problem: go to the Magnatunes integrated store, 
right-click an album title and select purchase. Enter your credit card 
details and click purchase.


Expected behaviour: get charged the chosen amount, once.

Observed behaviour: get a single confirmation that the transaction has 
been a success, with links to download the track. But then emails come 
through indicating that the transaction has in fact been processed more 
than once - I'm currently looking at three separate confirmation emails 
for a single purchase, with three separate charges to my card.

I have see that I can gain the same result with

also Italian dictionary in Debian is a very old release ... so obsolete 
than a lot of people ask me to correct a lot of errors, errors that are 
already corrected in the last version.
I think that Debian is the last GNU/Linux distro that have a so old 
Itailian dictionary version.


The last Italian dictionary under GPL license can be downloaded from

Irrelevant for this discussion. I can't add GPLed stuff to the
package because it then  would be GPL. The other dictionaries in the OOo
source are LGPL, though.


I don't have ask to add it to the OOo source, but to the myspell-it package.


You can package it externally or make it build from the ispell one, but
I will *not* include it in -dictionaries due it's being GPL.


If I don't have mistake I intend -dictionaries as a Debian package

interesting ... so you can neither include the German dictionary ... it 
is under GPL license and non-GPL for package that support the OASIS 
Open Document Format for Office Applications and whose PRIMARY format 
for saving documents is the Open Document Format
I don't think icedove, iceweasel, ... respect this exception, so for all 
these the German dictionary is only GPL 2.0 or upper


I think theare are lot of other dictionaries/thesaurus that have the 
same problem.



I told that in the bug report that it's G`PL and can't add it.
If you don't read it/understand it and then complain, well...

Also the Italian thesaurus is only GPL and there is a recent version in 
Debian ... why?



I have reported some hunspell bugs to Láló don't know if some can
be security bugs). I don't know if they are already corrected (Lálóve
told me: I hope, I will solve the problem this month for OOo 2.1).


Doubt that, there's no new hunspell release and neither does OOo 2.1
correct a new hunspell AFAIS (or he fixed the OOo h unspell copy and
forgot the normal one..)
