Is it ok to build-depends on gcc-4.4 on all platforms?

No, this has to be done by the buildd admins.

Where can I find the right procedure?

I've read the policy a bit, is

Build-Depends: gcc-4.4 [armel],

still the wrong thing to do?

Thanks for reporting this! Please note, that this had already been

Since other architectures are affected as well, I'm keeping this bug
open in collectd for future reference.

#558488 has been fixed in net-snmp 5.4.2.1~dfsg-4. Could you please
re-schedule a build on hppa to verify that collectd builds fine now?
paer is missing a few build deps (including libsnmp-dev) and I don't
think it's worth bothering DSA about that.

It is a new bug in python-support 1.x. I hope not too many packages are

Bug#559408: xserver-xorg-core: X server memory leak

After a recent Xorg upgrade (1:7.3+20 - 1:7.4+4), my Xorg server leaks
memory like a sieve. RSS slowly grows until my box starts to OOM. If I
restart Xorg prior to OOMing, the memory is freed and I can gracefully
recover. I am running the nv driver.

 Some things I have noticed:

If I exit X and only leave the display manager running, RSS does not
 substantially grow.

I don't have to leave any particular client open to hit the leak.

xrestop shows that my total usage is typically around 30MiB. I have
been unable to capture data that shows pixmaps being leaked.

The leak is fairly slow - it really does take a day or two to get to the
1G mark. In the past hour or so, it's grown from 70MiB to 90MiB.

I am happy to collect any information requested to help troubleshoot
 this - it's very annoying.

You could try running X under valgrind (with debugging symbols
installed). It would be fairly slow, but could give some hints.
IIRC 1.7 fixed a memleak related to cursors, do you have some clients
that create cursors?

The work to have them dynamic is done, it was simple to do. Note that in
this case, only linking against liboggplay and libsydneyaudio is necessary.
There is no direct access to the other libraries.

The problem now is getting at least the significant patches applied,
including those that add some API to liboggz and liboggplay. These
patches have been communicated upstream, and I'm waiting for review.
Once review is done, we'll need the patches applied to the packages we
have in Debian.

Another problem is that we don't have libsydneyaudio in debian yet.
I need to ping John Ferlito.

Bug#559422: egroupware: Timesheet user filter doesn't work right userId = 2000 - error in core accounts-members method?

2009-12-04 Thread Eneko Lacunza
Package: egroupware
Version: 1.6.002+dfsg-1~bpo50+1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Our setup has some users with low Ids (in 1-20 range) and some others with high
Ids (=2000), due to a migration to LDAP.

User filtering in Timesheet list works ok for low Ids, but wrong for high Ids.

It worked well with 1.6.001 .

Issue seems to be the following line
timesheet/inc/class.timesheet_ui.inc.php:457:

---
$query['col_filter']['ts_owner'] =
array_merge(array($query['col_filter']['ts_owner']),$GLOBALS['egw']-accounts-members($query['col_filter']['ts_owner'],true));
---

Call to account-members seems not to work properly, as our =2000 ids are
users and no groups, but it returns some low-ids...

Changing that line with the following solves the problem:

---
# Do not call account-members for groups (groups have id 0)
if ($query['col_filter']['ts_owner']  0) {
$query['col_filter']['ts_owner'] =
array_merge(array($query['col_filter']['ts_owner']),$GLOBALS['egw']-accounts-members($query['col_filter']['ts_owner'],true));
}
---

Anyway, real problem seems to be in account-members method, but this solves
the reported problem.

Thanks a lot
Eneko

I am trying to investigate a remote backup solution: nbd-server
gives me a block device from remote, which I locally crypt with
dmcrypt, and then use as a component of a RAID1. The backups are
written to the RAID1, and by rsync'ing the RAID, I effectively
generate an encrypted live-backup remotely.

Unfortunatly, that is only the theory, for in practice, the
dmcrypt+nbd combination doesn't seem to work (it might well be
a dmcrypt problem, though not likely):

The current emacs (/usr/bin/emacs23-x) at startup from the command
line now spits out the warning:

 (emacs:17029): GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called multiple times

I'm seeing this warning as well in emacs22-gtk, emacs23 and
emacs-snapshot. It has been triggered by the upgrade of libglib2.0-0,
from the comments in https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=563627
I think it needs to be fixed in that package.

This is a problem since a common use case was to run emacs in the
background, emacs file . With this new warning, emacs halts until
you run fg to bring it into the foreground so it can print its error
 message.

This is something I cannot reproduce, however.

Cheers,

Bug#557621: Patch

On Fri, 04 Dec 2009, David Paleino wrote:

The first call to cat_series might output lines that will be considered as
the return value of the function... and thus it would not work at all.
Calling cat_series twice is also not ideal.

This might be better:
local series=$(cat_series)
local retval=$?
local patch=$(echo $series | head -n 1)

Before creating more patches, please consider my advice in the other mail.
We need more help cooperating with upstream rather than creating more
patches to forward/get merged.

Bug#559107: weaknesses in BSD PRNG algorithms

2009-12-04 Thread Petr Salinger

If I understand it correctly, this means that the fix is present in
kfreebsd-8, but not kfreebsd-7?

Yes.

Not having it enabled by default seems good enough to me.

If I understand it correctly, the security problem is
it allows remote attackers to guess sensitive values such as IP
fragmentation IDs by observing a sequence of previously generated values.

By default, the next_value is previous_value+1, i.e. unsecure at all.
It can be enabled to use random (secure) value, the random value is in
kfreebsd-7 generated by weak X2 algorithm, in kfreebsd-8 by algorithm
suggested by Amit Klein.

So the options are:

1) leave it as is (same as native FreeBSD)
2) only backport new algorithm to kfreebsd-7
3) change default to use random algorithm in both kfreebsd-7 and kfreebsd-8
4) backport new algorithm to kfreebsd-7 and change default to use
random algorithm in both kfreebsd-7 and kfreebsd-8

What prefers the security team ?

Will Squeeze use kfreebsd-7 or -8 or both?

It is not yet decided, the kfreebsd-8 is really fresh.

Petr

apt-dater requires setting a DefaultPort and a DefaultUser. these
settings are always passed to the ssh call and thus overwrite the ssh

i suggest that the config also accept an empty DefaultUser/Port and, in

What's wrong with the configuration file, where you can save hosts like:

Unfortunately this does not work.

I added a printf $retval\n just before the [ -z $patch ] and:

$ quilt push

I suspect that $? catches the variable assignment rather than the launched
command.

I agree that calling cat_series twice is rather suboptimal, but I suppose we
could fix my previous patch just by adding /dev/null to the first call.

Anyways, I'll look a bit more into it, and try to have a cleaner patch.

Bug#559420: epiphany-browser: Right-click Save image as... and Save link as... don't work

2009-12-04 Thread Linas Žvirblis
Package: epiphany-browser

I can confirm this bug. Open image and Use image as background also
does not work. There are no errors, they simply do nothing.

seemed to work fine, as I recall it.

Bug#559426: SQL Syntax Error inside postgres_querylength_

This is probably caused by the query

| NOT LIKE 'IDLE%' %%FILTER%% UNION ALL SELECT
| 'transaction',COALESCE(max(extract(epoch FROM

because filter is defined as

Bug#550327: hello: doesn't cross-build

2009-12-04 Thread Santiago Vila
[ Sorry for taking so long to reply to this. I wanted to give this report
the reply that it deserves, and such reply was not a short one ].

Of course, I fully agree that hello should cross-compile, as it's made
with autoconf and it will be a good example for other autoconfiscated
packages to follow.

There is a paragraph in policy which is to blame (sort-of) for the
explicit use of CC in hello, namely this:

For the C programming language, this means the following compilation
  parameters should be used:

  CC = gcc
CFLAGS = -O2 -g -Wall # sane warning options vary between programs
  LDFLAGS = # none
INSTALL = install -s # (or use strip on the files in debian/tmp)

So: Should we change policy as well?

On one hand, setting CC=gcc makes debian source packages to build on
non-linux systems nearly out-of-the-box, provided gcc is installed.

I agree that this is a very marginal benefit for us, but I consider it
to be a nice thing.

In fact, a long time ago, I heard about some unix sysadmins that told
me that whenever thay wanted to have a free program in their unix
workstations, they retrieved directly the debian source as the first
try, not the author's version! Debian purifies the source and makes it
to be portable and error-free from build errors, they said.

On the other hand, one of the things ./configure usually do is to
check for gcc and use it if it's available, so this very little
marginal benefit does not really count for packages made with autoconf.

In diffutils, for example, I did this when I was asked to support
cross-compilation:

CC = gcc
ifneq ($(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE),$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE))
  CC=$(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE)-gcc
endif

If I have to remove CC=gcc from hello, I would like to see a policy change
that supports this change.

Or, alternatively, I could modify hello in the same way I did for diffutils.

Which route do you think we should follow?

Thanks.

Nothing wrong with your email :-)

Bug 558656 had similar symptoms according to
 http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2009/11/msg01695.html.

Could it be a related problem?

It sounds like exactly the same. So, since this is already reported,
closing the bug.

 Are you using acpi-support 0.130?

Hmm. No, acpi-support is still at lanny (strange); will try to update and
see what happens then. Hadn't tried acpi stuff earlier, but setting
brightness and restarting acpid does trigger/stop the issue as described.

Thanks a lot!

Bug#559428: epiphany crashes whenever a link on a toolbar is pressed

2009-12-04 Thread David Weinehall
Package: epiphany-webkit
Severity: serious
Version: 2.29.3-1

With the latest epiphany-webkit, the browser crashes every time you
middle-click a link that has been added to a toolbar. This is a regression
compared to 2.29.1-2.

Justification for severity -- makes package totally unfit for release;
major regression (epiphany-webkit is in my opinion in general totally
unfit for release due to the severe lack of functionality compared to
epiphany-gecko, but that's another issue).

Backtrace of the crash, courtesy of bug-buddy attached.

Steps to reproduce (in cleanest way possible; the bug-buddy report was
produced this way):

1.) Open browser with epiphany-browser -p
2.) Add a bookmark to a toolbar by dragging a url to it
3.) Middle click on this link
4.) ???
5.) Profit!

Bug#559430: live-helper: Generation fail if categories != main

2009-12-04 Thread Tobias Diaz
Package: live-helper
Version: 1.0.6-2
Severity: important
Tags: patch

If you try to add other file areas like contrib or non-free, initial
debootstrap fail because
lh_bootstrap_debootstrap script has a little variable names mismach at line
60:

if [ ${LH_CATEGORIES} != main ]
then
# Modify categories to remove leading/trailing whitespaces and replace
other whitepspace with commas
echo COMPO=$(echo ${LH_ARCHIVE_AREAS} | sed -e 's| |,|g')
DEBOOTSTRAP_OPTIONS=${DEBOOTSTRAP_OPTIONS} --components $(echo
${LH_ARCHIVE_AREAS} | sed -e 's| |,|g')
fi

Variable LH_ARCHIVE_AREAS are LH_CATEGORIES, adding this (or renaming vars)
correct the error:

if [ ${LH_CATEGORIES} != main ]
then
LH_ARCHIVE_AREAS=$LH_CATEGORIES
# Modify categories to remove leading/trailing whitespaces and replace
other whitepspace with commas
echo COMPO=$(echo ${LH_ARCHIVE_AREAS} | sed -e 's| |,|g')
DEBOOTSTRAP_OPTIONS=${DEBOOTSTRAP_OPTIONS} --components $(echo
${LH_ARCHIVE_AREAS} | sed -e 's| |,|g')
fi

Thanks.

Bug#553288: kdelibs5: add r1033984 to fix various crashes

2009-12-04 Thread Per Wawra
Currently Debian uses KDE 4.3.2.
This bug has been fixed in 4.3.3.
The latest upstream release is 4.3.4.

Wouldn't it be better to upload kde4libs/4:4.3.4-1
instead of only fixing a single bug in kde4libs/4:4.3.2-3?

Bug#559309: (no subject)

2009-12-04 Thread Adnan Hodzic

Marco,

I'm afraid problem is real and I too got it after I updated my system last night.

No, it just takes a bit longer.

If my whole system boots in 20 seconds, then having this error shown for 2 minutes or it won't boot it at all represents a serious problem.

I never waited to see how long it takes, I just interrupt the error with ctrl + c and the system continues with booting without any further trouble.

The fault is not in DDPO but NEW itself (after NEW got fixed after the
archive restructuring, the code doing those pages is not yet fixed).

2009-12-04 Thread Mark Brown
On Wed, Dec 02, 2009 at 08:43:35AM -1000, Ryo Furue wrote:

my machine. I think it's one of the purposes of yp.conf
to specify NIS servers when they are on different subnets
(that is, when they are not reachable by broadcast).
 Is that right?

Yes, that's the situation where configuration of /etc/yp.conf is
essential.

I don't know at all how common or rare the situation is
where NIS servers are on different subnets. Regardless,

It's pretty rare. Most systems have a NIS slave on each network
segment for performance reasons so the problem doesn't arise.

I don't think any debconf process should fail
when the user didn't give wrong parameters to it.
(And I consider this particular case as a failure
because ypbind gets stuck for 30 seconds or a minute
and says failed in red letters.)
In the case of the nis package, the user isn't given
a chance of giving correct parameters to the debconf
 process.

It's not actually failed - this is just a problem with the way the
standardised output stuff works, it'd probably be better to just change
the output to a success one.

With the model Debconf has there's really not much constructive we can
do here - the sort of configuration you need to do to set up a NIS
master server is really not at all appropriate for configuration within
Debconf where the UI elements are disconnected from the programmatic
control and probably need to be done as a post installation activity.

for the setups i've tested so far, it is possible to express them in

is redundant and prone to be missed when the ssh config is changed.

(it also causes apt-dater to display potentially unrelated port numbers
in the host list, although that could be taken care of in other ways)

experiment event display

iSpy a general-purpose visualisation program that is mainly used
as a CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment event display for
online detector monitoring, offline reconstruction, physics
 analysis, and public relations.
The iSpy philosophy is to deliver a user-focused high-quality and
performant interactive application that is very easy to install
 and use on multiple platforms.
 .
CMS is a high-energy physics experiment in Cessy, France, part of
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN.
It uses a general-purpose detector to investigate a wide range of
physics, including the search for the Higgs boson, extra dimensions,
and particles that could make up dark matter. Although it has the
same scientific goals as the ATLAS experiment, it uses different
technical solutions and design of its detector magnet system to
 achieve these.
CMS stands for Compact Muon Solenoid: compact because it is “small”
for its enormous weight, muon for one of the particles it detects,
and solenoid for the coil inside its huge superconducting magnet.

Since I'm not running SELinux: could you have a look at the Fedora
policy and see if the files are suitable?

With both virtual_domain_context and virtual_image_context from F12
the daemon starts, but then I'm unable to start any VM:

I have virt.pp loaded, and the operation fails even with SELinux in

I'm unable to load virt.pp from F-12, it seems that other modules are required:

module_request in class system, not satisfied (No such file or

libsemanage.semanage_link_sandbox: Link packages failed (No such file

I'm not _that_ expert with SELinux (and I'd rather not mess up my
server too much...), you may want to disable selinux support in the
package at least until an appropriate policy is available... feel free
to bounce this bug to the selinux guys.

+Depends: bzr (= 1.13), bzr ( 2.1~), mercurial (== 1.3.1),
${python:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}
Suggests: bzr-gtk

That patch is no good for two reasons

Firstly there has never been a version 1.3.1 of the debian package only
1.3.1-1, so that dependency could never be satisfied.

Secondly debian packages need to actually be installable with the versions of
thier dependencies currently in the archive.

It seems upstream have recently marked 1.4 and 1.4.1 as suported in trunk, I
dunno if said changes can be safely applied to the version currently in debian
though (i'm just doing some flyby investigation of rc bugs)

Bug#559344: kldutils: bashism used in /etc/init.d/module-init-tools

2009-12-04 Thread Petr Salinger

When running with a default shell of dash and not bash, the
/etc/init.d/module-init-tools script complains about not finding the bash
builtin shopt:
 # /etc/init.d/module-init-tools start
 /etc/init.d/module-init-tools: 62: shopt: not found
 #
Which is from this call:
modules=`shopt -s nullglob ; cat /etc/modules /etc/modules.d/* \
 | sed -e \s/#.*//g\ -e \/^\( \|\t\)*$/d\ `

I have to say I don't really understand where you got this code. It has
been fixed back in July, and is surely not in version 8.0-1.

It might be related to package name change in

freebsd-utils (7.1-4) unstable; urgency=low

  * Rename module-init-tools to kldutils and net-tools to freebsd-net-tools,
as this is messing up the expectations of several services of equially
named binary coming from the same source package.

 -- Guillem Jover guil...@debian.org Mon, 13 Apr 2009 17:29:58 +0200

Please run dpkg -L kldutils, there should be only lines

/etc/init.d
/etc/init.d/kldutils

Please try also dpkg -la | grep modules-init-tools,
there should be no such package. You might want to purge it.

 Dear Maintainer,

While reviewing some packages, your package came up as a package that
should maybe be orphaned by its maintainer, because:

 * Out of date with upstream.
 * RC bug.
 * NPOASR. (Never part of a stable release).
 * Low popcon.

Briefly - this package is one of those good ideas that hasn't really
been followed through. glashctl is a GUI front-end for lashd, which is
only relevant to users running a real-time kernel and jackd for
multi-app audio set-ups - many of them prefer to use the command-line
rather than a GUI which doesn't really work. It really needs someone at
debian-multimedia or a dedicated sub-distro such as 64studio to pick it
up, so it may be worth pursuing the standard orphaning procedure.
However, dropping it might force someone to write a front-end that
works, if such a thing is really required. I doubt whether anyone will
be that bothered.

cheers,

tim

Bug#559437: Improve resource usage with darcs --max-count 1.

2009-12-04 Thread Trent W. Buck
Package: ikiwiki
Version: 3.20091202
Severity: wishlist
File: /usr/share/perl5/IkiWiki/Plugin/darcs.pm

When Darcs 2.3 or higher is available (as in Debian), darcs.pm should
include --max-count 1 in its filtered darcs changes calls (that is, in
darcs_info and rcs_getctime). For non-trivial repositories, this
will significantly reduce the resource consumption (especially memory)

You may want to append darcs to the VCS alternatives in Recommends.

You may want to look at filestore[0], the library that gitit[1] uses

improving its Darcs backend when it was adopted by wiki.darcs.net.

Bug#559439: libxklavier15 missing in testing makes kdebase uninstallable

2009-12-04 Thread Salvo Isaja
Package: libxklavier15
Version: 4.0-2

libxklavier15 has not yet entered testing, but kdebese-workspace-bin depends
on it, and it is in testing. kdebase, kdeminimal and kdebase-workspace have
been removed from testing after an upgrade. The KDE session disappears from
KDM after this.

Picking libxklavier15 from unstable lets install them back.

Bug#559274: xfig: buffer overflow in read .fig file

2009-12-04 Thread Hans de Goede

Hi all,

I'm the Fedora package maintainer of xfig,
I've created a patch for xfig-3.2.5b, which fixes this overflow. Note that
after this xfig will still crash on plane.fig, going into a recursive function
call loop inside u_bound.c, till it exceeds its maximum stack size.

This may caused be caused by the use of an uninitialzed variable
resolution (for 1.3 files) inside f_read.c:readfp_fig() when calling
scale_figure().

Given that this other bug has lingered for quite a long while, I'm wondering
if 1.3 format support is still functional at all, and if it would not be
better to simply disable it ?

Can anyone provide me with some valid 1.3 format files to see how much work it
will be to fix 1.3 format support ?

See:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=543905

For discussion and:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=376059action=edit

For the patch.

Regards,

Hans

Bug#559378: bzr-hg: Incorrect versioned dependency on ‘mercurial’

2009-12-04 Thread Ben Finney
On 04-Dec-2009, peter green wrote:
Firstly there has never been a version 1.3.1 of the debian package

Okay.

Secondly debian packages need to actually be installable with the
versions of thier dependencies currently in the archive.

The point, though, is that the program in the package *does not work*,
for anyone, with any version of the ‘mercurial’ package except 1.3.1.

That's exactly what the package's ‘Depends’ field should reflect, to
tell the Debian packaging system to stop two incompatible packages
from being simultaneously installed.

So, whatever constraints the ‘bzr-hg’ plug-in has on the versions of
Mercurial it works with, those constraints need to be reflected in the
‘bzr-hg’ package's ‘Depends’ field; and that field should be updated
when the constraints in a new ‘bzr-hg’ version are updated.

Bug#559441: gnumeric: moving around the spreadsheet slow after last upgrade

2009-12-04 Thread Miernik
Package: gnumeric
Version: 1.9.16-1
Severity: normal

After I did these upgrades:

 [UPGRADE] gnumeric 1.9.15-1 - 1.9.16-1
 [UPGRADE] gnumeric-common 1.9.15-1 - 1.9.16-1
 [UPGRADE] libgoffice-0-8 0.7.15-1 - 0.7.16-1
 [UPGRADE] libgoffice-0-8-common 0.7.15-1 - 0.7.16-1

moving the cursor around the spreadsheet became sluggish. I am talking
about moving around which does not cause the spreadsheet to scroll, lust
moving around fields in the same visible area.

How slow it is?

Well, before the upgrade, when I keep my down-arrow pressed, it took 3
seconds to move down 75 lines. After the upgrade it takes 10 seconds to
do the same.

Downgrading just gnumeric and gnumeric-common packages DOES NOT make it
fast again, but then downgrading also libgoffice-0-8 DOES make it fast
again. I did downgrade only gnumeric, gnumeric-common, and
libgoffice-0-8, but not libgoffice-0-8-common (aptitude somehow allowed
it and the spreadsheet worked, and was fast again). After upgrading all
three back again - slow again. 3 seconds vs. 10 seconds is a lot of a
difference, and is annoying.

Bug#558218: Can't search for http://foo.

Hi,

On ven., 2009-11-27 at 16:09 +1100, Trent W. Buck wrote:
 Package: epdfview

I wanted to search for an http link in a PDF. So I typed
/http://foo;, where the first slash opens up the find toolbar at the
 bottom of the screen.

Unfortunately, because the / is bound within that toolbar, I can see
no way to search for a string containing a /. I tried ^Q/ and ^V/ and
\/ to escape the slash, and I tried using a period (in case it was
doing regex matching). These didn't work.

Yep, confirmed, I can't do it either.

I suppose I could type Ctrl+digits if I knew the unicode codepoint
for a slash... Hmm, apparently I can't type any codepoints that way
-- maybe that trick only works if I'm inside a desktop environment
(I'm not; I'm running epdfview straight from xinit).

Yeah, I think it's related because here (under Xfce) I can type the
 control codes.

Jordi, as you see above, the '/' character can't be entered in the
search bar because it'll be used as the “open search bar and select the
text” even when the focus is already on the search bar.

OK, I didn't test it until now :-D

I modified the search bar to disable the / as an accelerator while the
search bar is visible, this way we can enter / as text. Once the bar is
closed the accelerator is restored to its original value.

Thanks for reporting!

Jordi

Bug#559443: dosbox: ymf262{c,h} lack licence statements

2009-12-04 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: dosbox
Version: 0.73
Severity: serious

Hi,
First: ymf262.c has no licence statement, so its not clear if its distributable.
Second: In #530824 theres issue with fmopl.c(.h) and the possability of MAME
code being copied. According to the reporter in [1] the same problem could be
applicable to ymf262.{c,h}.
It would be great if the status of these files could be clarified.

Please look at https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213280#c6 and tell me if
the proposed fix (remove the 'CurrentEngine=locate' line) helps.

My konquerorrc lacks such a line or section detailed in the bug report.
More to follow as I try Phillip's fix of removing the stale 3.5 file.

Bug#357297: This new behaviour is really annoying and really should be totally reverted as a horrible idea.

2009-12-04 Thread George Kiagiadakis
On Sunday 22 of November 2009 01:55:08 Lennart Sorensen wrote:
Having xscreensaver autostart is just wrong. The way to disable it is
way too complicated for most users to understand, and it still interferes
with kde and gnome's own screensaver setups.

Please revert this completely and never do it again. It is simply the
 wrong way to do things.

Every desktop manager has a way to start and select screensavers. Having
xscreensaver but in the way simply annoys users and confuses everyone.
it is easy to enable xscreensaver from any window manager and desktop.
It is currently very hard to prevent xscreensaver from running. hence the
current setup is just wrong. Wrong wrong wrong.

I totally agree. Most users have gnome or kde and they are totally confused
when they find that their screensaver settings are not honored. I was confused
myself too, it took me a week to find out that xscreensaver was running.

I am a kde user, so I can talk about what a kde user faces with this setup:
1) KDE screensaver settings are not honored. Setting a different screesaver, a
different timeout, disabling screensaver, they all don't work because
xscreensaver always kicks in.
2) Mplayer and other video players do not stop xscreensaver for some reason
(probably because they attempt to stop kscreensaver as they are running inside
kde?), so you get screensavers right in the middle of movies... :@

To fix this, a user has to:
1) Find xscreensaver in the output of ps and realize that xscreensaver is not
part of KDE. (Do you really expect an average user to be able to do that??)
2) Either disable it by using the complicated method with the desktop files
(which requires looking in this bug report to find instructions), or purge it.

So, I think autostarting xscreensaver is just wrong and must be reverted asap.
Users that use xscreensaver are probably advanced enough to know how to make
xscreensaver autostart.

Regards,
George

Bug#559449: piuparts: please add LVM support [PATCH]

2009-12-04 Thread Patrick Schoenfeld
Package: piuparts
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hi,

I'd like to use piuparts but neither with creating a new chroot on every
run, nor by unpacking a tarball on every run, but with LVM snapshots.
There is a bug report about adding schroot support, but I didn't see any
benefit of using schroot in contrast to just using LVM snapshots, so
I implemented the latter. My patch is attached. Feel free to apply it
or if you have any questions/comments get back to me.

Best Regards,
Patrick

Bug#559271: libnss-ldapd: nscd crashes during ssh login

Thanks for reporting this. Just to be clear, you are seeing this with
libnss-ldapd 0.6.7.1 and 0.7.1?

To trigger the problem, I try to log in using ssh. I suspect the cause
is the huge amount of groups and the huge amount of group members we
 have here at the university.

Hmm, I've tried (even installed SSH in a lenny chroot jail in my test

This is the valgrind output when it crashes:

The segfault happens when reading a returned group entry (while listing
all groups) and specifically when reading the group members.

Can you also reproduce this with just 'getent group' (or id -a user)?
Does it make a difference if nscd is running or not? Does cleaning the
nscd cache make a difference (nscd -i passwd; nscd -i group)?

If this is a problem with the communication between nscd and the NSS
module, recompiling the NSS module with -DDEBUG_PROT (and maybe even
-DDEBUG_PROT_DUMP) could give a lot more details. Warning: this causes
every command that does NSS lookups (through LDAP) to output a lot of
debugging information.

Changing the group entry to 'files ldap' avoid the crash, but will not
work for me as we use +...@netgroup entries in /etc/group and
 /etc/passwd.

Does changing +...@netgroup to just + make a difference (haven't set this
up in my test environment)?

Anyway, thanks for pointing this out.

it was worth filing a bug report.

Bug#559448: libxprintapputil: No licence specified by upstream

2009-12-04 Thread Karl Goetz
Package: libxprintapputil
Severity: normal

Hi,

This should probably be severity serious, but I wasn't positive.
Upstreams source[1]/copying file[2] both include copyright statements, but
neither includes a licence grant. The Debian copoyright file has assigned
the x licence[3] to the package, but licence should come from upstream.

Bug#559447: gnat-4.4: extends keyword in project files seems to be broken

2009-12-04 Thread xavier
Package: gnat-4.4
Version: 4.4.2-3
Severity: important

extends key word in gnat projects seems to have problems when
including other projects files.
A test case is joined to this bug report :
proj.gpr with xmlada.gpr
so input_sources.{ads|adb|ali|o} are known
proj_bis.gpr do a with of proj.gpr
so input_sources.{ads|adb|ali|o} are known
proj_ter.gpr extends proj.gpr
so input_sources.{ads|adb|ali|o} should be known
which is the case with gnat gpl 2009 and not with gnat-4.4

This bug was found when trying to use projects file in polyorb/gnat-4.4
using extends. If the extends is removed then the code compile but then DSA
seems to be broken.

Hello,

Please see the following reasons for the removal request:

* Never part of a stable release.
* RFA'd for quite a while.
* Low popcon.
* Will be superseded by foswiki if it ever gets packaged. (Currently ITPd).
* Acknowledged by maintainer.

Bug#559195: Cannot build the source package in clean chroot, unable to pdebbuild the package.

2009-12-04 Thread Loïc Minier
On Thu, Dec 03, 2009, Artur R. Czechowski wrote:
Well, under mentioned circumstances it is obviously my fault, because
I am using tools in a not intended way. Of course, it would be nice
to have a possibility of download this or that package and recompile it
without cluttering the filesystem with normaly unneeded development
packages. I think you can just close the bug. Or, if you are able
to fulfill my wish - toggle it to wishlist.

Theoritically build-deps should be installed for clean, but pbuilder
 and dpkg-buildpackage don't enforce this.

One thing which could be done is packing the source with dpkg-source -b
in the development environment and copying it to the chroot, *then*
building the source + binaries in the chroot env.

Bug#559432: bc: -6^2 = 36, which is actually wrong (should be -36)

From the bc man page:

The expression precedence is as follows: (lowest to highest)
  || operator, left associative
   operator, left associative
  ! operator, nonassociative
  Relational operators, left associative
  Assignment operator, right associative
+ and - operators, left associative
  *, / and % operators, left associative
  ^ operator, right associative
  unary - operator, nonassociative
  ++ and -- operators, nonassociative

Note that unary - has _higher_ precedence than ^. Thus -6^2 is
equivalent to (-6)^2. -6 represents the negative number minus
six, not the expression 0-6.
