Bug#559408: xserver-xorg-core: X server memory leak
On Thu, Dec 3, 2009 at 23:48:26 -0500, Ross Vandegrift wrote: After a recent Xorg upgrade (1:7.3+20 - 1:7.4+4), my Xorg server leaks memory like a sieve. RSS slowly grows until my box starts to OOM. If I restart Xorg prior to OOMing, the memory is freed and I can gracefully recover. I am running the nv driver. Some things I have noticed: If I exit X and only leave the display manager running, RSS does not substantially grow. I don't have to leave any particular client open to hit the leak. xrestop shows that my total usage is typically around 30MiB. I have been unable to capture data that shows pixmaps being leaked. The leak is fairly slow - it really does take a day or two to get to the 1G mark. In the past hour or so, it's grown from 70MiB to 90MiB. I am happy to collect any information requested to help troubleshoot this - it's very annoying. You could try running X under valgrind (with debugging symbols installed). It would be fairly slow, but could give some hints. IIRC 1.7 fixed a memleak related to cursors, do you have some clients that create cursors? Bug#559107: weaknesses in BSD PRNG algorithms
If I understand it correctly, this means that the fix is present in kfreebsd-8, but not kfreebsd-7? Yes. Not having it enabled by default seems good enough to me. If I understand it correctly, the security problem is it allows remote attackers to guess sensitive values such as IP fragmentation IDs by observing a sequence of previously generated values. By default, the next_value is previous_value+1, i.e. unsecure at all. It can be enabled to use random (secure) value, the random value is in kfreebsd-7 generated by weak X2 algorithm, in kfreebsd-8 by algorithm suggested by Amit Klein. So the options are: 1) leave it as is (same as native FreeBSD) 2) only backport new algorithm to kfreebsd-7 3) change default to use random algorithm in both kfreebsd-7 and kfreebsd-8 4) backport new algorithm to kfreebsd-7 and change default to use random algorithm in both kfreebsd-7 and kfreebsd-8 What prefers the security team ? Will Squeeze use kfreebsd-7 or -8 or both? It is not yet decided, the kfreebsd-8 is really fresh. Bug#550327: hello: doesn't cross-build
[ Sorry for taking so long to reply to this. I wanted to give this report the reply that it deserves, and such reply was not a short one ]. Of course, I fully agree that hello should cross-compile, as it's made with autoconf and it will be a good example for other autoconfiscated packages to follow. There is a paragraph in policy which is to blame (sort-of) for the explicit use of CC in hello, namely this: For the C programming language, this means the following compilation parameters should be used: CC = gcc CFLAGS = -O2 -g -Wall # sane warning options vary between programs LDFLAGS = # none INSTALL = install -s # (or use strip on the files in debian/tmp) So: Should we change policy as well? On one hand, setting CC=gcc makes debian source packages to build on non-linux systems nearly out-of-the-box, provided gcc is installed. I agree that this is a very marginal benefit for us, but I consider it to be a nice thing. In fact, a long time ago, I heard about some unix sysadmins that told me that whenever thay wanted to have a free program in their unix workstations, they retrieved directly the debian source as the first try, not the author's version! Debian purifies the source and makes it to be portable and error-free from build errors, they said. On the other hand, one of the things ./configure usually do is to check for gcc and use it if it's available, so this very little marginal benefit does not really count for packages made with autoconf. In diffutils, for example, I did this when I was asked to support cross-compilation: CC = gcc ifneq ($(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE),$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE)) CC=$(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE)-gcc endif If I have to remove CC=gcc from hello, I would like to see a policy change that supports this change. Or, alternatively, I could modify hello in the same way I did for diffutils. Which route do you think we should follow? Thanks. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Nothing wrong with your email :-) Bug 558656 had similar symptoms according to http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2009/11/msg01695.html. Could it be a related problem? It sounds like exactly the same. So, since this is already reported, closing the bug. Are you using acpi-support 0.130? Hmm. No, acpi-support is still at lanny (strange); will try to update and see what happens then. Hadn't tried acpi stuff earlier, but setting brightness and restarting acpid does trigger/stop the issue as described. Bug#559428: epiphany crashes whenever a link on a toolbar is pressed
Package: epiphany-webkit Severity: serious Version: 2.29.3-1 With the latest epiphany-webkit, the browser crashes every time you middle-click a link that has been added to a toolbar. This is a regression compared to 2.29.1-2. Justification for severity -- makes package totally unfit for release; major regression (epiphany-webkit is in my opinion in general totally unfit for release due to the severe lack of functionality compared to epiphany-gecko, but that's another issue). Backtrace of the crash, courtesy of bug-buddy attached. Steps to reproduce (in cleanest way possible; the bug-buddy report was produced this way): 1.) Open browser with epiphany-browser -p 2.) Add a bookmark to a toolbar by dragging a url to it 3.) Middle click on this link 4.) ??? 5.) Profit! Bug#558456: nis: please let debconf ask whether to start ypbind
On Wed, Dec 02, 2009 at 08:43:35AM -1000, Ryo Furue wrote: Because our NIS servers are not on the same subnet as my machine. I think it's one of the purposes of yp.conf to specify NIS servers when they are on different subnets (that is, when they are not reachable by broadcast). Is that right? Yes, that's the situation where configuration of /etc/yp.conf is essential. I don't know at all how common or rare the situation is where NIS servers are on different subnets. Regardless, It's pretty rare. Most systems have a NIS slave on each network segment for performance reasons so the problem doesn't arise. I don't think any debconf process should fail when the user didn't give wrong parameters to it. (And I consider this particular case as a failure because ypbind gets stuck for 30 seconds or a minute and says failed in red letters.) In the case of the nis package, the user isn't given a chance of giving correct parameters to the debconf process. It's not actually failed - this is just a problem with the way the standardised output stuff works, it'd probably be better to just change the output to a success one. With the model Debconf has there's really not much constructive we can do here - the sort of configuration you need to do to set up a NIS master server is really not at all appropriate for configuration within Debconf where the UI elements are disconnected from the programmatic control and probably need to be done as a post installation activity. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. (to verify) Programming Lang: C++ Description : A powerful and lightweight CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment event display iSpy a general-purpose visualisation program that is mainly used as a CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment event display for online detector monitoring, offline reconstruction, physics analysis, and public relations. The iSpy philosophy is to deliver a user-focused high-quality and performant interactive application that is very easy to install and use on multiple platforms. . CMS is a high-energy physics experiment in Cessy, France, part of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It uses a general-purpose detector to investigate a wide range of physics, including the search for the Higgs boson, extra dimensions, and particles that could make up dark matter. Although it has the same scientific goals as the ATLAS experiment, it uses different technical solutions and design of its detector magnet system to achieve these. CMS stands for Compact Muon Solenoid: compact because it is âsmallâ for its enormous weight, muon for one of the particles it detects, and solenoid for the coil inside its huge superconducting magnet. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Secondly debian packages need to actually be installable with the versions of thier dependencies currently in the archive. Bug#553897: glashctl: Should this package be orphaned (or removed)?

(Never part of a stable release). * Low popcon. Briefly - this package is one of those good ideas that hasn't really been followed through. glashctl is a GUI front-end for lashd, which is only relevant to users running a real-time kernel and jackd for multi-app audio set-ups - many of them prefer to use the command-line rather than a GUI which doesn't really work. It really needs someone at debian-multimedia or a dedicated sub-distro such as 64studio to pick it up, so it may be worth pursuing the standard orphaning procedure. However, dropping it might force someone to write a front-end that works, if such a thing is really required. Bug#559437: Improve resource usage with darcs --max-count 1.
Package: ikiwiki Version: 3.20091202 Severity: wishlist File: /usr/share/perl5/IkiWiki/Plugin/darcs.pm When Darcs 2.3 or higher is available (as in Debian), darcs.pm should include --max-count 1 in its filtered darcs changes calls (that is, in darcs_info and rcs_getctime). For non-trivial repositories, this will significantly reduce the resource consumption (especially memory) needed for these operations. You may want to append darcs to the VCS alternatives in Recommends. You may want to look at filestore[0], the library that gitit[1] uses to store its wiki source pages in git or darcs. Some effort went into improving its Darcs backend when it was adopted by wiki.darcs.net. Bug#559274: xfig: buffer overflow in read .fig file
Hi all, I'm the Fedora package maintainer of xfig, I've created a patch for xfig-3.2.5b, which fixes this overflow. Note that after this xfig will still crash on plane.fig, going into a recursive function call loop inside u_bound.c, till it exceeds its maximum stack size. This may caused be caused by the use of an uninitialzed variable resolution (for 1.3 files) inside f_read.c:readfp_fig() when calling scale_figure(). Given that this other bug has lingered for quite a long while, I'm wondering if 1.3 format support is still functional at all, and if it would not be better to simply disable it ? Can anyone provide me with some valid 1.3 format files to see how much work it will be to fix 1.3 format support ? See: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=543905 For discussion and: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=376059action=edit For the patch. Bug#559378: bzr-hg: Incorrect versioned dependency on ‘mercurial’
On 04-Dec-2009, peter green wrote: Firstly there has never been a version 1.3.1 of the debian package only 1.3.1-1, so that dependency could never be satisfied. Okay. Secondly debian packages need to actually be installable with the versions of thier dependencies currently in the archive. The point, though, is that the program in the package *does not work*, for anyone, with any version of the ‘mercurial’ package except 1.3.1. That's exactly what the package's ‘Depends’ field should reflect, to tell the Debian packaging system to stop two incompatible packages from being simultaneously installed. So, whatever constraints the ‘bzr-hg’ plug-in has on the versions of Mercurial it works with, those constraints need to be reflected in the ‘bzr-hg’ package's ‘Depends’ field; and that field should be updated when the constraints in a new ‘bzr-hg’ version are updated. -- \德不孤、必有鄰。 (The virtuous are not abandoned, they shall | `\ surely have neighbours.) —孔夫子 Confucius, 551 BCE – 479 BCE | _o__) | Ben Finney b...@benfinney.id.au signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I am talking about moving around which does not cause the spreadsheet to scroll, lust moving around fields in the same visible area. How slow it is? Well, before the upgrade, when I keep my down-arrow pressed, it took 3 seconds to move down 75 lines. After the upgrade it takes 10 seconds to do the same. Downgrading just gnumeric and gnumeric-common packages DOES NOT make it fast again, but then downgrading also libgoffice-0-8 DOES make it fast again. I did downgrade only gnumeric, gnumeric-common, and libgoffice-0-8, but not libgoffice-0-8-common (aptitude somehow allowed it and the spreadsheet worked, and was fast again). After upgrading all three back again - slow again. 3 seconds vs. 10 seconds is a lot of a difference, and is annoying. Bug#558218: Can't search for http://foo.
Hi, On ven., 2009-11-27 at 16:09 +1100, Trent W. Buck wrote: Package: epdfview Version: 0.1.7-2 Severity: minor I wanted to search for an http link in a PDF. So I typed /http://foo;, where the first slash opens up the find toolbar at the bottom of the screen. Unfortunately, because the / is bound within that toolbar, I can see no way to search for a string containing a /. I tried ^Q/ and ^V/ and \/ to escape the slash, and I tried using a period (in case it was doing regex matching). These didn't work. Yep, confirmed, I can't do it either. I suppose I could type Ctrl+digits if I knew the unicode codepoint for a slash... Hmm, apparently I can't type any codepoints that way -- maybe that trick only works if I'm inside a desktop environment (I'm not; I'm running epdfview straight from xinit). Yeah, I think it's related because here (under Xfce) I can type the control codes. Jordi, as you see above, the '/' character can't be entered in the search bar because it'll be used as the âopen search bar and select the textâ even when the focus is already on the search bar. OK, I didn't test it until now :-D I modified the search bar to disable the / as an accelerator while the search bar is visible, this way we can enter / as text. Once the bar is closed the accelerator is restored to its original value. Thanks for reporting! Bug#357297: This new behaviour is really annoying and really should be totally reverted as a horrible idea.
On Sunday 22 of November 2009 01:55:08 Lennart Sorensen wrote: Having xscreensaver autostart is just wrong. The way to disable it is way too complicated for most users to understand, and it still interferes with kde and gnome's own screensaver setups. Please revert this completely and never do it again. It is simply the wrong way to do things. Every desktop manager has a way to start and select screensavers. Having xscreensaver but in the way simply annoys users and confuses everyone. it is easy to enable xscreensaver from any window manager and desktop. It is currently very hard to prevent xscreensaver from running. hence the current setup is just wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. I totally agree. Most users have gnome or kde and they are totally confused when they find that their screensaver settings are not honored. I was confused myself too, it took me a week to find out that xscreensaver was running. I am a kde user, so I can talk about what a kde user faces with this setup: 1) KDE screensaver settings are not honored. Setting a different screesaver, a different timeout, disabling screensaver, they all don't work because xscreensaver always kicks in. 2) Mplayer and other video players do not stop xscreensaver for some reason (probably because they attempt to stop kscreensaver as they are running inside kde?), so you get screensavers right in the middle of movies... :@ To fix this, a user has to: 1) Find xscreensaver in the output of ps and realize that xscreensaver is not part of KDE. (Do you really expect an average user to be able to do that??) 2) Either disable it by using the complicated method with the desktop files (which requires looking in this bug report to find instructions), or purge it. So, I think autostarting xscreensaver is just wrong and must be reverted asap. Users that use xscreensaver are probably advanced enough to know how to make xscreensaver autostart. Bug#559449: piuparts: please add LVM support [PATCH]

Can you also reproduce this with just 'getent group' (or id -a user)? Does it make a difference if nscd is running or not? Does cleaning the nscd cache make a difference (nscd -i passwd; nscd -i group)? If this is a problem with the communication between nscd and the NSS module, recompiling the NSS module with -DDEBUG_PROT (and maybe even -DDEBUG_PROT_DUMP) could give a lot more details. Warning: this causes every command that does NSS lookups (through LDAP) to output a lot of debugging information. Changing the group entry to 'files ldap' avoid the crash, but will not work for me as we use +...@netgroup entries in /etc/group and /etc/passwd. Does changing +...@netgroup to just + make a difference (haven't set this up in my test environment)? Bug#559195: Cannot build the source package in clean chroot, unable to pdebbuild the package.
On Thu, Dec 03, 2009, Artur R. Czechowski wrote: Well, under mentioned circumstances it is obviously my fault, because I am using tools in a not intended way. Of course, it would be nice to have a possibility of download this or that package and recompile it without cluttering the filesystem with normaly unneeded development packages. I think you can just close the bug. Or, if you are able to fulfill my wish - toggle it to wishlist. Theoritically build-deps should be installed for clean, but pbuilder and dpkg-buildpackage don't enforce this. One thing which could be done is packing the source with dpkg-source -b in the development environment and copying it to the chroot, *then* building the source + binaries in the chroot env. -- Loïc Minier -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
