pccardctl ident returns nothing, as in it shows no cards, unless cardmgr
has been made to run. the card lights up fine, and works fine with no
special config using pcmcia-cs.

FWIW, the kernel developers are planning to remove those OSS drivers which
have adequate ALSA replacements. So if you haven't reported your ALSA
problem against the appropriate package, you should do so reasonably soon.

FWIW, this crash can be prevented by (re)selecting any object. That suggests
that something is not fully initialised at startup, but it could still be an
X bug - I'm also using the r200 driver (rv280).

Your problem with gxine looks like a graphics hardware or driver problem.
Does your problem go away with any of -V xshm, different hardware, newer or
differently-configured X, newer libxine1 or newer gxine?
