I'm astounded a bug report from 2011 hadn't been closed long since.
Thank you for looking at it, I rather liked wicd. Oh well, time
marches on.

Bug#680278: linux-image-3.2.0-3-686-pae: Fails to mount removable media

2012-07-04 Thread Curt Howland
Package: src
Version: 3.2.21-3
Severity: important

Good morning. I have updated two laptops and a desktop system with the same
result,
plugging in a USB thumb drive fails to automount, and trying to mount the device
gets the error Permissions problem.

However, one system still has kernel 3.2.0.2, and when booted in 3.2.0.2
instead of
3.2.0.3, the thumb drives mount just fine.

Bug#680278: Additional information

2012-07-04 Thread Curt Howland
Dear Debian,

To further troubleshoot, I downloaded and built kernel 3.4.4 generic
from Kernel.org, built the .deb package as per Building the kernel
the Debian way, and automount works perfectly when running 3.4.4.

I may have forgotten to mention that even CDs fail to mount while
running the Debian 3.2.0.3

Bug#613727: wicd and networkmanager conflict

2011-02-16 Thread Curt Howland
Package: wicd
Severity: wishlist

Wicd and NetworkManager conflict when installed at the same time.

The Wicd and NetworkManager programs should not be able to be installed
at the same time, but they can be.

Please add networkmanager conflicts with wicd and the reverse into
the Debian packaging to avoid this problem.

Bug#613727: wicd and networkmanager conflict

2011-02-16 Thread Curt Howland
On Wednesday 16 February 2011, David Paleino was heard to say:
No. They can manage different interfaces :)

Oh. Well, they conflict for me. Just having NetworkManager installed
and trying to use wicd causes the network interfaces to not function
at all. They report up but nothing more.

 Please see http://bugs.debian.org/548978 .

Thank you, I will.

Sorry to bother you.

Bug#583254: apt: Should pull multiple DEB files from multiple repositories if available

2010-05-26 Thread Curt Howland
Package: apt
Version: 0.7.25.3
Severity: wishlist

I have a broadband 'Net connection, and apt could utilize this by pulling
multiple DEB files in parallel when those files are available from multiple
repository mirrors in sources.list.

I looked through the bug reports for apt and saw several bandwidth LIMITING
requests, this is the opposite.

When INDIVIDUAL DEB files are available, such as from volitile, Virtualbox,
debian-multimedia or backports, those DEB files are pulled by apt in
parallel while also pulling DEB files from the standard repositories.

So at the start of a serious update/upgrade/install, I see full network
utilization until the unique repositories are finished.

But when there is more than one repository in sources.list that contains
the same DEB files, only the first listed source is utilized so only a
single DEB file is being downloaded, one at a time, even if hundreds of
mirrored standard packages are being updated.

I have more than one official Debian mirrors in my sources.list, thank
you apt-spy, and if different DEB files were pulled from each of them in
parallel, this would better utilize my 'Net connection, as well as
spreading the load across different mirrors.

Thank you for listening,

Curt-

Bug#580290: xfce: No Debian application menu

2010-05-04 Thread Curt Howland
Package: xfce4
Version: 4.6.1.3
Severity: important
File: xfce
Tags: squeeze

The xfce menu does not include any entry for the all-inclusive Debian
application menu. This seems new to Squeeze, since Lenny has such an
entry.

This severely impacts the usability of xfce, since there are lots of
applications installed that don't show up in the xfce-specific menus.

I saw the wishlist bug #489441, but this is not a complete change to
the menu structure. Only an inclusion of what has made Debian one of
the best distributions of all: Desktop agnosticism.

When using module assistant, the fglrx-source package fails to build, with
conflicting types for irqreturn_t, at least that is what it looks like. I
can't find the m-a log file location to paste it into this message.

The pre-built 2.6.26 module, which I assume was made with m-a, works fine.
Thing is, I'd like to try the 2.6.30 kernel.

Got it, I understand.

It fails with 2.6.26? I do not think so, sorry, so I am
 downgrading.

No, you're right, I didn't know where to look to find the build log,
so I didn't realize I'd remembered it wrong.

We are unable to support 2.6.30 with fglrx 8-12, it was also like
 hell with 9-7..

was also... gives me some hope. Is it working in Sid, and I might be
able to pull it back into Lenny?

Sadly, I note that the latest has not been put into backports, maybe I
should be making a polite request there...

Got it, thanks.

Simply adding driver nvidia to the device section did the trick,
everything else took care of itself as you described.

Ran fsck (thank you, Knoppix) as detailed as I could last night, no

Did you change any /usr/lib/openoffice/program/*rc file?

No, I don't mess with that stuff. I'm a user type, rather than

 (Well, apt-get remove openoffice.org-*, apt-get instal

all OOo packages, but that won't help if files in /etc/openoffice

Consider it done, as soon as I get time today, and let you (and

Up to date Sid. Just ran Dselect to make sure there was no further updates
today.

When trying to open any document, spreadsheet or presentation, or start
oowriter,
oocalc, etc, from the command line, the splash graphic for OOo 2.4 comes up, but
the progress bar does not get anywhere. An error dialog comes up with:

  The application cannot be started.
The user interface language cannot be determined.
 OK

Pressing OK merely closes the application. My environment has LANG=en_US.UTF-8
which as far as I know has been there for a long time, and OOo worked a few days
ago.

Works here. The message you get comes when there are resource files

As far as I know, all of them. Except for the KDE prelaunch loader, I
don't mind load times but my laptop has max RAM at 512M.

Bug#436267: linux-image-2.6.22-1-686: IEEE1394 modules unbuilt in packaged kernel

2007-08-06 Thread Curt Howland
Package: linux-image-2.6.22-1-686

The IEEE1394 kernel drivers that have been built as modiles in prior

On Monday 06 August 2007, maximilian attems was heard to say:
no they are the old firwire stack,
that has been disabled due to security concern and general
 distrust.

Oh crud. :^(

what are you missing in the yuyu stack?

At least raw1394, to create an entry /dev/raw1394 so that dvgrab can
access a video camera. I don't know what else might have been mixed
into the stack to do the work.

The camera shows up, dmesg shows the following when I plug it in:

-
firewire_core: phy config: card 0, new root=ffc1, gap_count=5
firewire_core: phy config: card 0, new root=ffc1, gap_count=5
firewire_core: created new fw device fw1 (0 config rom retries)
-

But if /dev/raw1394 is gone with a good reason, such is life. You
folks are the experts.

Bug#436295: dvgrab: raw1394 no longer being compiled into Debian kernel

2007-08-06 Thread Curt Howland
Package: dvgrab
Version: 2.1-2
Severity: important

I'm sorry if this should have been a wishlist bug, I couldn't decide.

As of kernel 2.6.22, according to bug #436267 which I opened on the
kernel, the reason that /dev/raw1394 doesn't exist is because the Debian
kernel folks aren't building the module raw1394 any more. Which means
in order to use dvgrab, people have to custom compile a kernel.

Like I said, not sure if this is critical, since dvgrab doesn't work
any more with the Debian kernels, or if it's wishlist because it would
be nice if dvgrab used whatever it is that is being built into the
kernels now.

The camera shows up, this is what dmesg shows when I power it on:

firewire_core: phy config: card 0, new root=ffc1, gap_count=5
firewire_core: phy config: card 0, new root=ffc1, gap_count=5
firewire_core: created new fw device fw1 (0 config rom retries)

maybe there is something there for dvgrab to use.

No it does not.

Yes, it did. Unbootable is one of the options listed in reportbug
for breaks the whole system.

Don't use yaird.

Then why is yaird packaged?

I was writing back to note that, violating the rule of updating a
running kernel that it should be rebooted ASAP, I was able to
uninstall yaird and use initramfs-tools instead, and it indeed did
work to create the initrd.img file, as you intimate that it might by
suggesting that there might be some other unnamed package to do what
yaird does (or rather, until today, did).

My complements to the dselect developers who give a list of
alternatives when uninstalling a package, for other package(s) which
provide that needed functionality.

I was going to ask that the ticket 434597 be reassigned to yaird. But
sadly, it has already been closed.

Bug#429745: nvidia-kernel-source: After nvidia splash, x crashes unable to handle kernel paging request))

2007-06-20 Thread Curt Howland
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I'm sorry, but now it's working. After half a dozen reboots and
fiddles last night, with continual failure, this morning I forgot to
reboot into 2.6.18 and let 2.6.21 boot. It came up with the Nvidia
driver just fine, no errors.

I hate it when software heals.

Please close this ticket, and thank you very much for listening.

Bug#429745: Acknowledgement (nvidia-kernel-source: After nvidia splash, x crashes unable to handle kernel paging request)

2007-06-19 Thread Curt Howland
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

The problem occurred on 2.6.21, compiled using the kernel package from
Debian source with the only change to the config being
paravirtualization turned off because otherwise the Nvidia kernel
module will not compile. (GPL only violation)

I went back to the Debian stock 2.6.18 kernel, and the new Nvidia
kernel module 100.14.06 compiles and runs fine.

So, unless there is some change before then, I will update this
bugreport when 2.6.22 comes out, since I am told that the GPL-Only
flag on paravirtuatlization will be removed and therefore the Nvidia
kernel module should compile against the Debian stock kernel.

On Sunday 22 April 2007, Debian Bug Tracking System was heard to say:
This is an automatic notification regarding your Bug report
#420523: xserver-xorg-core: Cannot find installed Nvidia driver,
which was filed against the xserver-xorg-core package.

It has been closed by Julien Cristau [EMAIL PROTECTED].

Their explanation is attached below. If this explanation is
unsatisfactory and you have not received a better one in a separate
message then please contact Julien Cristau [EMAIL PROTECTED] by
 replying to this email.

 Debian bug tracking system administrator
 (administrator, Debian Bugs database)

Well, ok, but when a Debian package doesn't work after a Debian
update, I rather consider it a Debian problem.

One person on Debian-user has said that the Nvidia binaries work, _if_
the files are put in the new places that the xorg system wants them
to be.

So yes, I will wait for a new Debian nvidia-kernel-source package. I
never intended to do anything else.

2006-12-18 Thread Curt Howland
Package: libacl.so.1
Severity: important

Hi, Sorry, I don't know which package this library is in. I'm unable to
do much of anything with my system, even ls -al gets the following
error:

$ ls -al
ls: relocation error: /lib/libacl.so.1: symbol getxattr, version

This started just after apt-get upgrade an hour ago, in fact the error
showed up as the upgrade process completed.

This is a problem that was fixed in this afternoon's update of
unstable. Upgrade the libattr1 package to fix it.

I guess I updated just a few hours too early. The joys of unstable!

Thank you very much, that fixes it as of 20:15 EST.

Bug#391921: alsaconf does not save changes

2006-10-09 Thread Curt Howland
Package: alsaconf
Severity: important

Other people are reporting the same problem. Alsaconf does not
save its changes through a reboot. Alsaconf asks if the user
wants to update /etc/modprobe.d/sound and /etc/modprobe.conf,
but neither of these files exists in a recent install of Sid or,
if other folks are to be believed, Testing either.

There is also no message during shutdown that alsa settings
being saved, a message that comes up in my long-established
system.

I _think_ alsaconf needs to be updated to write its changes
to /etc/modules and this is what has been suggested to be done
by hand in debian-user.

BTW, during this latest cycle, I tried touch /etc/modprobe.conf to
see if that would be updated by alsaconf if the file simply existed.
It was not, and the file does not exist now, but _this_ time the
file /etc/modprobe.d/sound was created with the correct settings in
it.

I will forward the results of the next reboot, which I'll do shortly,
if the status was retained this time.

 Hello Curt,
this error message means that the package apollon include an
 incorrect menu file.

I am not sure which version of apollon was installed on your
system, but I expect it to be 1.0.1-3 (due to the date of the
report). In that case this is likely a duplicate of bug #383383
which was fixed in apollon 1.0.1-4.

I will let the apollon maintainer closing it.

 Thanks for your bug report,

Bug#382829: konq-plugins: move to and copy to missing from Konqueror context menu

2006-08-13 Thread Curt Howland
Package: konq-plugins
Version: 4:3.5.2-1
Severity: normal

A couple of days ago I noticed that move to: and copy to: are missing from
the
right-click-on-a-file context menu in Konqueror. The same action on the desktop
has
the move and copy entries. I looked it up at KDE and it says the plug-in is
Kuick,
and I do not see Kuick in Konqueror=Settings=ConfigureExtentions although I
don't
know if it should show up there or not.

It was a nice feature. If the decision was made to remove it, then I guess I'll
live with it. Thank you for making Debian KDE such a good environment.

Bug#366630: nvidia-kernel-2.6.16-1-686: prebuilt nvidia-kernel module fails, self-built works

2006-05-16 Thread Curt Howland
Package: nvidia-kernel-2.6.16-1-686
Version: 1.0.8756+1
Followup-For: Bug #366630

The pre-built nvidia-kernel-2.6.16-1-686 fails, Xlog shows unable to load,
but if I build it from the nvidia-kernel-source it works just fine.

When I run dselect, it automatically upgrades to the prebuilt kernel module,
which then fails to load next time I restart Xwindows. I keep the hand-built
module and simply dpkg -i nvidia-kernel-2.6.16-1-686_1.0.8756-4_i386.deb
and X starts just fine.

Bug#358859: linux-headers-2.6.16-1-686: modules-assistant reports unconfigured source

2006-04-02 Thread Curt Howland
According to other folks, the modules-assistant compiles madwifi just
fine even with the error message.

Second, with the 1.0.8178-3 version of the nvidia kernel source, it is
no longer looking for the header file that has gone missing from
2.6.16 that was in 2.6.15 and earlier, and so it compiles just fine
now also.

Since this problem is well known, covered in other bugreports, and a
deliberate change anyway, please close this bugreport.

Bug#358859: linux-headers-2.6.16-1-686: modules-assistant reports unconfigured source

2006-03-24 Thread Curt Howland
Package: linux-headers-2.6.16-1-686
Version: 2.6.16-2
Severity: normal

Hi. I have two kernel modules which I build from source, both of which worked
perfectly well with 2.6.15 but both fail when trying to compile for 2.6.16.

When I tried building madwifi, module-assistant reported unconfigured source
when examining the linux-headers-2.6.16-1-686 tree. Building the module didn't
work.

When I tried building the nvidia kernel module, I received lots of error
messages
that seem to me to be related to the kernel source headers not having been
configured, the same kind of problem as module-assistant reported. I dumped the
nvidia build messages to a file and will append them to this ticket in a
separate
message so things don't get too messy.

Bug#355292: dselect welcome to main package listing screen changed behavior

2006-03-04 Thread Curt Howland
Package: dselect
Version: 1.13.16
Severity: wishlist

Good afternoon. Some time around when Sarge was released, the dselect
welcome to dselect's main package listing screen changed behavior.

When I first used it, the required keystroke was the space-bar to go
from that screen to the actual listing. But then, I started using dselect
in 1995.

Then between when Woody and Sarge were released (I've been tracking Sid
the whole time), I think, the behavior changed and instead of the
space-bar to continue, it became hit enter to continue.

While a surprise, I realized that it was much more consistent and logical,
since everywhere else in dselect hitting enter is what is used to
simply continue.

However, when Sarge was released (or some time around then) the behavior
revered back to space.

This has been bugging me ever since. So I politely request that the
behavior of dselect be changed back to the consistency of using enter
as the continue button everywhere, including the welcome to dselect's
main package listing page. Thank you for taking the time to consider
this request regardless.

BTW, people don't say Thank You enough. Thank you for all your hard
work, which is what makes Debian the distribution that it is. Without
the Debian Developers, there wouldn't be any reason to use it. I admire
and respect all the effort it takes to keep things working as remarkably
well as this system you have created does.

Bug#348929: k3b: Cannot verify written data DVD

2006-01-19 Thread Curt Howland
Package: k3b

When I select verify, the data DVD writes and ejects, but when I close the

the first file on the disk. Obviously, this fails the verify.

I have tried CDs, and verify works just fine. I thought the 3.5 media

Bug#348929: k3b: Cannot verify written data DVD

Francois, indeed it does seem to be the same error. Sorry I didn't
check the KDE bugtrack this time. :^(

However, I have added a comment to that bug that I did get a
successful verify when burning a CD from .ISO file. I haven't tried a
DVD from .ISO, or a data CD with individual files, to test the other
two variations in the matrix.

 Hi Curt,

I just had a quick look at your bug report and I was wondering if
 it's similar to this bug:

Bug#238865: olwm used to show up in display manager menu

2006-01-14 Thread Curt Howland
Package: olwm
Version: 3.2p1.4-19.1
Followup-For: Bug #238865

I had to create a olwm.desktop file in /usr/share/xsessions, by copying
the one that kde automatically creates.

When did olwm stop creating the file? I noticed that twm, olwm and
windowlab all stopped showing up in the display manager list about the
same time.

This problem occurs in sarge and sid, and I must therefore assume etch.

Bug#348120: kdm does not list available window managers in menu list

2006-01-14 Thread Curt Howland
Package: kdm
Version: 4:3.5.0-4
Severity: normal

kdm used to list twm, olwm, and other installed window managers a couple
years ago when I first installed kdm, I do not remember which Debian
release it was. I
recently installed Sarge, and updated to Sid. olwm and twm have been
installed the entire time, but never showed up in the menu in kdm.

I put in a wish-list bug with olwm,
that I had to create a file for olwm (and twm) by hand in
/usr/share/xsessions,
===
When did olwm stop creating the file?

It never did. As I said, olwm registers the x-window-manager alternative
which can be used easily to generate a list of all installed window
managers. I guess there is some application that did exactly that and
now
no longer does it. But I don't have the slightest idea about which one
that
could be.

Martin
===

Maybe someone could forward this bug to whatever
maintainer/package/committee it is that decides if it is a core X issue,
a kdm issue, or the responsibility of the individual window manager to
write a file into /usr/share/xsessions. Whatever it is, I think it
would be greatly appreciated, if the comments I and others on the user
list have made are any indication.

Suggest merge with #343042, it seems this is happening to lots of
people.

I attempted the fix mentioned in #343042, adding MODULE ide-generic
and MODULE ide-disk to /etc/haird/Default.cfg, and running yaird -v
-o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.14-2-686 2.6.14-2-686, but the same error
occured. I have not yet downgraded yaird.

Bug#339057: linux-image-2.6.14-1-686: Cannot turn DMA on for /dev/hda

2005-11-14 Thread Curt Howland
Package: linux-image-2.6.14-1-686
Version: 2.6.14-2
Severity: important

I have 2.6.12 and 2.6.14 (686 P4) installed on this machine. If I boot back into
2.6.12 DMA is on for /dev/hda. It is off in 2.6.14 and will not enable:

# hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
 using_dma=  0 (off)

This has, as you can imagine, very detrimental effects with ext3
filesystem responsiveness. Ugh!

DMA has worked in every kernel image I have used with this machine,
tracking Sid since summer 2003 with 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. Until now, that
is.

Bug#339058: linux-image-2.6.14-1-686: 2.6.14 frame buffer no longer enabled in binary package

2005-11-14 Thread Curt Howland
Package: linux-image-2.6.14-1-686
Version: 2.6.14-2
Severity: wishlist

First, thank you for all your astounding work keeping Debian the best
distribution bar none.

Until 2.6.14, I was able to use vga=791 for framebuffer in lilo.conf,
and found the substantially larger console very useful. vga=791 no
longer functions, in fact it causes the console to fail entirely. I
looked in the /etc/yaird/Default.cfg and it says OPTIONAL MODULE fbcon
so maybe the framebuffer has to be compiled in. Sorry I cannot be more
help, I tried compiling my own 2.6.14, and got hopelessly lost even
though compiling in the frame buffer did work.

Bug#339058: Well, this afternoon it works. vga=791

2005-11-14 Thread Curt Howland
Just after I filed this wishlist item, I decided to try again. This
time vga=791 works. Surprisingly, the characters are even smaller
than when running 2.6.12. It's better than 80x25, though.

Please excuse the bug report, I guess it's already obsolete.

Bug#339058: Well, this afternoon it works. vga=791

2005-11-14 Thread Curt Howland
On Monday 14 November 2005 17:03, Jonas Smedegaard was heard to say:
No need for excuse: this is highly relevant info, as I suspect it
shows that the recent yaird inclusion of fbcon is what solves this.

Could it be that even if you noticed the new fbcon line in
Default.cfg, your image is in fact from an older date so does not
 include this?

Yes indeed.

This afternoon, after I let the fact that fbcon was in there sink in
for a few minutes (the 2-year-old was asleep, amazing what a
difference that makes in my attention span!), and realized I didn't
remember it when I looked in Default.cfg the first time last week, I
decided to do something suggested by the folks on debian-user and
reinstall so yaird would generate a new initrd. I did that by
dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.14-1-686 and watched to make sure
that yaird was mentioned in the output. It was, and that's when I
tried putting vga=791 back in to lilo.conf and it worked.

The reason I am interested in this is that with the newest kernel
release fbcon is builtin, so you are one of the last to help figure
out if fbcon is actually needed to be builtin.

Well, it worked today when it didn't work when I first installed
2.6.14, so indeed something in the mean time changed for the better.

Can you think of any additionall information I might be able to
provide? I do not remember editing any files by hand other than
lilo.conf. I just looked at Default.cfg, I didn't change anything.

I hope that helps.

  - Jonas

Bug#306183: kmail: KDE bug 99089 fixes InlinePGP error

2005-10-20 Thread Curt Howland
Package: kmail
Version: 4:3.4.2-2
Followup-For: Bug #306183

Using Sid, Kmail 1.8.2 InlinePGP selected still gets sent as PGP/MIME.

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99089 has a patch to this bug.
I guess that Debian is just waiting for the change to make its way
downstream.

In the mean time, there is an option in Kaddressbook for receivers
as to what kind of signature they prefer to receive. If InlinePGP
is selected there, then InlinePGP signing works to that address. I
have found that useful for mailing lists which mess up the attached
signature of PGP/MIME.

I am looking forward to the patch making its way through to Sid, as I
find InlinePGP much more flexible and usable than PGP/MIME.

Bug#301903: Acknowledgement (/usr/bin/growisofs: error when called to write video DVD from K3b)

2005-03-29 Thread Curt Howland
I'm very sorry, the problem was a user error.

I had dragged and dropped the *directory* VIDEO_TS into the K3b DVD
project VIDEO_TS location, when I should have copied the individual
files out of the directory instead.

It is working fine now. I will now go slap myself silly so that I
never do that again.

My most humble apologies, please close this bugreport. No wonder no
one else could repeat the problem...

Curt-

Bug#301903: /usr/bin/growisofs: error when called to write video DVD from K3b

2005-03-28 Thread Curt Howland
Package: dvd+rw-tools
Version: 5.21.4.10.8-1
Severity: important
File: /usr/bin/growisofs

*** Please type your report below this line ***

I'm running up-to-date Sid.

Writing a data DVD works fine, as do video and regular CDs. The last
time I successfully wrote a video DVD was in January. However, it's
giving the following error now, from the K3b log:

=
Devices
---
SONY DVD RW DW-U50A 1.5a (/dev/hdc, ) at /cdrom [CD-R; CD-RW; CD-ROM;

I have verified permissions on the device /dev/hdc and that there is
more than several DVD's worth of hard disk space left over. I also
tried running this under 2.6.8 as well as 2.6.10, same error. I note
from the other bugreports that there are problems running growisofs
as root, I have not tried it as root.

Any suggestions gladly accepted.
