i wish i knew why O'Reilley (sp?) chose 2.2.12 to be the default
kernel..the other 2.1r3 slink cd i have (burned from downloaded
ISO) defaults to 2.0.36(i believe)
btw besides this minor hiccup that book/cd combo rules. even tho i know
debian pre
curious as to why there was no realtek 8139 driver included in slink. and
it doesnt appear as an option in the kernel that slink comes with (2.2.12
currently -- using the CD from the new O'reilley book) even tho the
rtl8139.c file is there(it failed to compile as a module for some reason)

btw eth0 will not be in /dev so dont be suprised if

i have found that ulimit works very well with apache. i have my default
ulimit set to a max of 12 processes per user, but with apache i gotta
increase it to 40-50 before i start it or it may puke with cannot spawn
child process on some cgis.

rescue disk, and/or lilo got curropted somehow (reinstalling lilo fixed it

is this right in i see only 2MB of swap on a machine with 14MB of ram ? i
make it rule for myself to have 128MB swap for every physical hdd

i may be wrong but i think the esound daemon does this, not though in the
way you say.
i believe, apps send the output of the audio to the daemon and the daemon
opens /dev/dsp and outputs it there. any number of apps can talk to the
daemon and the daemon can/will output sound from multiple source
try this:
dpkg -S /usr/bin
it spitsout a screenfull of packages for that dir.
never tried that before, that rules dpkg can do that.

i have no complaints about netscape either. Sure it can crash..lockup.
But it has never..once.. brought down the system. never brought down X

sounds like a DNS issue, run a reverse lookup on the IP and see what comes
out. you can also add this line to your /etc/resolv.conf
domain yourdomain.com
that will cause the system to search the local domain when you ping a

I was wondering what the best way to set the path globally in X. e.g. i
compile kde apps by hand and they all go into /usr/local/kde/bin and no
matter what i do i can't get that into my $PATH for X. its in my
/etc/enviornment and /etc/profile and i added it to /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup

slap the script in /etc/init.d
put a link to it in /etc/rc?.d
where ? = runlevel (runlevel 2 is defailt for debian so /etc/rc2.d )
make sure to chmod +x the script

I have this really strange problem. I had 1 main server running debian
2.0, and identd was fine. I upgraded it to debian 2.1 ..and it no longer
works. I removed it from inetd.conf and tried to run it at the command
line and i got something along the lines of
