;) .. Example 1: *transparent_proxy 80 3128 squid inface eth0 src 10.0.0.0/8* to redirect all tcp/80 requests coming in from eth0 (10.0.0.0/8) to your local web caching proxy server listening at port 3128 and running as user squid. RE: Alternativas a VMWare ESX
Re: Two Lenny problems
I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you saying that the installer does not recognize existing partitions already on the hard disk? Or are you saying that it won't let you create more than five partitions during installation? Or are you saying that only five different mount points were offered? The choices are: One whole partition, three partitions, or five partitions. I didn't see anything that would allow creation of more. And is there any advantage to installing LVM? On the S390 platform, a typical 3390-3 DASD device is about 2.3G. If you want a partition larger than this you can use LVM to create a logical partition which consists of multiple physical partitions, and you can keep adding space as necessary. There are other uses for it, I'm sure, but that is my primary experience with it. Is it right to see LVM as software to combine several HD's? Does it have any use with respect to a single 1.5TB HD? There are proprietary drivers available. From reading the list, people either swear by them or swear at them. When they work, they generally work really well, but they break easily with, for example, security updates to the system. Yeah, I just read a few comments on nVidia proprietary drivers. Not all that promising. The video is sufficient for regular tasks, but I didn't check DVD video performance. It is not a fatal flaw, just another nice performance feature to have. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? How to know if DVI connection is digital or analogue?
DVI supports both digital and analgue connections (that's how VGA adaptors work). I have a user who fought with his Windows drivers to force digital connection, even though he was connecting with the DVI ports over a DVI cable it was sending analogue until he configured it properly. Not that he is running a Debian derivative, how can he check which connection (digital or analogue) is being used? Re: OT: wireless b/g/n usb adaptor
For a/b/g the Alfa AWUS036H has good support and the (last I checked) the top performing usb card out there. It uses the rtl8187 driver and should work out-of-the-box with the stock Debian kernel. If you want the N version of the same card, it will require the rtl8187se. This will take a bit more work to get going (such as installing the backports kernel) in Debian and may have issues as it is a sort-of testing phase. Eventually better support for it should be worked out. Or are you saying that only five different mount points were offered? The choices are: One whole partition, three partitions, or five partitions. I didn't see anything that would allow creation of more. If you are running the installer in expert mode, and you are using manual partitioning, you should have full control over this. Here's how I invoke expert mode: (1) Boot the install CD. At the main menu, press the down arrow key twice to select Help, then press Enter. You will be taken to a help menu. There will be verbiage at the bottom ending with boot:. This is a boot prompt, though that may not be obvious. At the boot prompt, type expert and press Enter. You can also add any kernel boot parameters that you want to use during installation. For example, expert clocksource=pit acpi=off notsc I'm not necessarily recommending these boot parameters in your situation; I'm just giving this as an example. When you get to the partition disks step, select manual partitioning. This should give you full control. You create a partition by selecting free space and pressing Enter. Of course, you can't create a partition if you have used up all of the free space. You can create a maximum of four primary partitions. But once you create four primary partitions, you can't create anything else. In order to create a logical partition, you must have fewer than four primary partitions. You can create a maximum of one extended partition, and I believe the extended partition is implicitly created when you create the first logical drive. I can't remember for sure. The /boot partition must be a primary partition if you want to keep your original DOS/Windows-style master boot record and install the boot loader in the boot sector of the /boot partition. There are other uses for it, I'm sure, but that is my primary experience with it. Is it right to see LVM as software to combine several HD's? Does it have any use with respect to a single 1.5TB HD? I'm no expert on this, but with the installer's ability to resize partitions when used in a rescue-like mode, I'm not sure that LVM is really necessary in your situation. DAAP server for OS X or Debian?
Hi, I use iTunes on a Mac to host my very large music library. I want to share this music over DAAP to my Debian box (dont really care what client i use, Rhythmbox or Banshee or Songbird is all fine), but the iTunes version encrypts it so you cant use it with non-iTunes clients. Is there a current, supported DAAP server that runs on OS X, or alternately, if i decided to switch to host my music on Debian (which i dont want to do mainly because i have a bunch of useful utilities on the Mac that dont exist on Linux), is there a recommended one for Linux? Ive looked at some of the projects, but they confuse me because there are a lot and some of them are no longer supported, or use plugins that are no longer supported, etc. So if there's a main one that everyone likes, I will be happy to use that. Re: How to know if DVI connection is digital or analogue?
I might be saying complete bullshit, but do DVI cables carry tha analog signal? It's true the connectors in VGA boards have both signals, but shouldn't a standard DVI cable only transmit the digital signal and ignore the analog part, which is used only when a DVI-VGA adaptor is used? Moreover, even if the cable transmits the analog signal, if it's plugged at the DVI input of the monitor, I believe the monitor will take digital signal from there. Even if there is also analog signal in the cable, it should be ignored in the DVI input. In theory, I think that you are right. However, for whatever reason on his Windows install (same hardware, I just formatted the drive) he had a hard time configuring it to send digital. There is some software tool especially made for pendants to check this in Windows :) He does not want to buy a new cable when the current cable works fine. He just wants to know that it is digital. -- Dotan Cohen http://bido.com http://what-is-what.com Please CC me if you want to be sure that I read your message. Why get a new cable? His current cable works fine. He just wants to know whether the video is analogue or digital, because in Windows on the same hardware he had to especially configure it to send digital. Is there no way to tell which type of connection is being used? For whatever reason, it is important to him to know that the connection is digital. If video source -display- is digital (extreme A of the cable is connected to a DVI-x output) and input source -graphic card- (extreme B of the cable is connecetd to a DVI-x input) then he can only get a digital signal. In theory, he _should_ get digital like that. In practice, without fiddling, in Windows it was sending analogue. What are the involved elements here, that is, graphic card and display brand/model? Some ATI onboard graphics, I don't know what brand the motherboard was (it's not here with me now). The FOSS drivers work fine on it, even for KDE composting. The monitor was a MAC LCD, I think around 22 or so. As per your original question, no, I don't know any software or method to analyze or test the video input signal being digital or analogic :-?
