The simplest example I can think of is a system with a gateway interface transmitting packets for multiple addresses and subordinate interfaces transmitting packets for one or all addresses except for the address of the machine itself. Be careful what you ask for, hub/switch in networking context means those devices (operating at layer 1 2, aka Ethernet in most configs) used for physically connecting multiple computers, usually belonging to the same layer 3 4 network (TCP/IP) ;) AFAICT, what you ask for is a gateway/router. Here is a very short tutorial: ,[ /etc/network/interfaces ] | # the Internet interface, assuming a static config | # as received from the Internet provider | iface eth0 inet static | address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # this is your Internet IP address | netmask 255.255.255.0 | gateway xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # this is your gateway to the Internet | dns-nameservers xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx | | # internal network, where this computer is the gateway | iface eth1 inet static | address 192.168.0.1 | netmask 255.255.255.0 ` Install resolvconf, shorewall, dnsmasq. For shorewall first you need to he files contained in /usr/share/doc/shorewall-common/default-config to /etc/shorewall/ and then adjust a few of them according to the example in /usr/share/doc/shorewall-common/examples/two-interfaces (all paths from memory as both gateways I administer remotely are currently shut-down). Also don't forget to set IP_FORWARDING=On (instead of Keep) in /etc/shorewall/shorewall.conf. On a client machine you only need the package resolvconf and: ,[ /etc/network/interfaces ] | iface eth0 inet static | address 192.168.0.xx# anything else but 192.168.0.1 | netmask 255.255.255.0 | gateway 192.168.0.1 | dns-nameservers 192.168.0.1 # yes, the gateway, because we have dnsmasq ` If you want your gateway to also provide DHCP just uncomment one example that suits you in /etc/dnsmasq.conf and restart dnsmasq. On the client side you only need: iface eth0 inet dhcp To connect multiple computers you need an Ethernet switch, preferably with auto-crossover or even Gigabit capabilities (a hub would also do, but I doubt you can still buy one...). You can also add a network card for each additional internal computer and use bridge-utils to create a bridge. This way your gateway will also act as a switch ;) This setup is very flexible and can be extended in several ways depending on your needs. Re: Linux hub
Hi, I don't know if it's possible to make a hub with multiples NICs using Linux, I would say it isn't, cause a hub it's a physical signal repeater and re-generator... In the case of an ethernet switch, it's possible using bridge-utils package. You need multiple NICs (you can also bridge virtual interfaces like Xen, but I don't think that's what you're looking for). Once you've installed the package, you need to use the command brctl to create and configure the bridge. Greetings! [debian-user] Any one getting aptitude frozen on update with Translation-en bzip2 ?
Hi, I use debian unstable, and when trying to do aptitude update Today I face at the very end: 99% [1 Translation-en bzip2 0] And then aptitude just freezes forever... I searched through google for this, and I found old bug reports about that but for apt-get: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=535182 (june 2009) http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=505092 (november 2008) The second one suggests it's a problem in the repos, that eventually went away. The 1st one though, which wasn't ever answered, suggests perhaps a problem with apt-get not handling correctly the compression used for a package (update uses bzip on Packages.gz when no .bz2 is available). I'm getting this on aptitude (it's been a while since I don't use apt-get, since the initial days of aptitude, when it was said it was a bad idea to mix the 2)... This is the first time I see this on years, so perhaps someone else has experienced this before? Any suggestions? Also, can anyone else confirm they're hit by this? I'm using repos from: debian.osuosl.org debian-multimedia.org unofficial.debian-maintainers.org For unstable, and for both architectures (amd64 and i686), and all machines are freezing on aptitude update as of now... Is this drive supported? How can I get it seen by debian? You need to be more specific in your question. Seen is such a terrible word in a technical sense. For me that would mean that the kernel's usb module detected it and logged it to /var/log/syslog. Please look at the activity in /var/log/syslog and report what is happening when you insert or remove the usb device. But I imagine that you are using a GNOME desktop environment (or a KDE desktop environment) and no icon is appearing on your desktop after plugging it in? Is that what is happening for you? Unfortunately with those it all depends upon what packages you have installed. (Personally I despise those types of happy extras and disable them on my machine so I won't be much help for you but at least it will identify the problem.) It doesn't mean that your machine isn't seeing the usb device. Do you have gnome-mount installed? $ dpkg -l gnome-mount Summary: Both *before* and *after* inserting the usb device: $ cat /proc/partitions $ less /var/log/syslog Observing any differences will be clues to what is happening. Fw: udev rules network
Hi, Short: Is there a way to regenerate the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file based on the current situation? If I recall correctly the udev rules are there to make sure the same device name is used for the same hardware during hardware changes and I can still see the advantage in case I need to add more network ports by adding another network card. libept0 -- Needed or not?
A few weeks ago, I posted because sid wanted to uninstall a slew of system apps, including aptitude. I waited it out as suggested here, and sure enough, it cleared. However, I have one last package that does not seem to clear -- libept0. So do I allow it to be uninstalled or should I wait longer for the update? thanks, --b

If you cant, use a livecd for example sysresccd [2] (can be used from a CD or USB stick) and use photorec from that. You can edit that file at your convenience, that is, if the new motherboard ethernet adapters got renamed into eth2, eth3 and so on, just edit the rules to adjust them and get eth0, eth1 if that is your goal. You can do this by commenting (#) the old rules and just add the new ones. Greetings, -- Camaleón -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Recording A/V from embedded Flash player
I'm looking for a general solution to record audio and video from Flash players embedded in webpages. I've searched the web, but not found any really general solution. Some Flash video players save a .flv file under /tmp, and that's great, since I can just copy it somewhere else (sometimes it's necessary to do this before the video finishes (pausing it if necessary), since it disappears on completion, but usually it remains there indefinitely). Obviously, anything that uses a mms: url is manageable, since I can then feed that url to mplayer or vlc and instruct them to capture / dump it. But what to do when neither of these is the case, and AFAICT the player is using some proprietary protocol to communicate with the server? I'm interested in audio and video, but primarily the former. Now, obviously the Flash code isn't providing its own HW drivers, so it must be talking to the ALSA and video subsystems, so shouldn't there be some way to instruct ALSA to dump the audio to a file? Any help, ideas, leads will be much appreciated Celejar -- foffl.sourceforge.net - Feeds OFFLine, an offline RSS/Atom aggregator mailmin.sourceforge.net - remote access via secure (OpenPGP) email ssuds.sourceforge.net - A Simple Sudoku Solver and Generator -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
