# pvdisplay --- Physical volume --- PV Name /dev/sda5 VG Name plantilla-debian-64 PV Size 9,76 GiB / not usable 2,00 MiB Allocatable yes (but full) PE Size 4,00 MiB Total PE 2498 Free PE 0 Allocated PE 2498 PV UUID q7nW67-uR1Y-BIho-dPPt-Zz4c-SiOe-G87aJ8 --- Physical volume --- PV Name /dev/sdb1 VG Name plantilla-debian-64 PV Size 100,00 GiB / not usable 2,66 MiB Allocatable yes (but full) PE Size 4,00 MiB Total PE 25599 Free PE 0 Allocated PE 25599 PV UUID YZ3qQy-9fbQ-oPzh-5Hft-aTqF-3zpJ-iyQx3e --- Physical volume --- PV Name /dev/sdc1 VG Name plantilla-debian-64 PV Size 200,00 GiB / not usable 3,00 MiB Allocatable yes (but full) PE Size 4,00 MiB Total PE 51199 Free PE 0 Allocated PE 51199 PV UUID aYT1uX-z23R-X1Jy-1DSS-H65H-SJZc-BpzCR0 # lvdisplay --- Logical volume --- LV Path/dev/plantilla-debian-64/root LV Nameroot VG Nameplantilla-debian-64 LV UUIDkl4qHR-8pSf-ebny-UxOg-PGmh-BUcC-NEJZZH LV Write Accessread/write LV Creation host, time , LV Status available # open 0 LV Size19,31 GiB Current LE 4943 Segments 2 Allocation inherit Read ahead sectors auto - currently set to 256 Block device 254:1 --- Logical volume --- LV Path/dev/plantilla-debian-64/swap_1 LV Nameswap_1 VG Nameplantilla-debian-64 LV UUIDEByaZA-WBHD-997L-QzmP-bcY6-k13m-TRa7yd LV Write Accessread/write LV Creation host, time , LV Status available # open 2 LV Size460,00 MiB Current LE 115 Segments 1 Allocation inherit Read ahead sectors auto - currently set to 256 Block device 254:0 --- Logical volume --- LV Path/dev/plantilla-debian-64/WWW LV NameWWW VG Nameplantilla-debian-64 LV UUIDdeH1w0-Y1YI-iO8R-Z0S3-nZHs-PRTX-rfXXEJ LV Write Accessread/write LV Creation host, time , LV Status available # open 1 LV Size289,99 GiB Current LE 74238 Segments 2 Allocation inherit Read ahead sectors auto - currently set to 256 Block device 254:2 -- Salud. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-spanish-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. SSL Session Cache and Resumption modssl's supports a plugable backend for storing client sessions with theSSLSessionCache directive. The two most commonly used are the _shm and dbm on a single machine. The shm backend is faster than dbm, and should be used in almost all cases. However, as Adam noted, most people have more than one machine doing SSL Termination. This means a distributed SSL session cache is needed. I wrote the patch for mod_ssl to support a memcached SSL Session cache 3 years ago. This patch wasn't backported, so you'll need to use Apache 2.3.x, which is currently in Alpha.
Socket activation doesn't necessarily mean things are delayed but simply that explicit orderings are unnecessary. The numbers you have posted are depressing, but doing that over the complete archive is even more so. The last time I did an archive wide check on this was early 2014, at that time we had 1235 SysV init scripts and 1124 occurences of sleep. Whatever happened to semaphores (flags)? Seems to me that if a daemon is a dependency, the second-last startup thing it should do is connect to itself (since it may well be asynchronous); on success, it should run a flag up the pole (touch a file somewhere) to tell the world that it is up and ready to process requests. All of its dependents should wait for that flag to appear before they make their own services available. And later during operation, removal of the flag should cause dependent daemons to withdraw their services. How would dependent services notice the creation/deletion of the semaphore file? Presumably you would want that code (possibly using inotify) to be in a common program, rather than reimplemented everywhere. Since that common program is going to watch for the file and start/stop daemons, let's call that the init service. Both systemd and upstart can do exactly this. But, rather than introducing a file just for this purpose, it would be better to use something essential to the functioning of the service as the semaphore. If the service provides its functionality over a network, it should be considered ready when it listens on a socket. If the service provides its functionality over dbus, it should be considered ready when it acquires a name on the bus. Both systemd and upstart provide mechanisms for such events as well. -- regards, kushal pgpFWf35FqkIp.pgp Description: PGP signature

Yup, the boot speed improvements come from doing things correctly and event based. Indeed, since starting programs is the exact goal of the first PID process. Plus, stuff from systemd is far easier to understand for a beginner (systemd beginner and sysvinit beginner, I insists on this). This dependency managing of dependencies is another advantage of systemd, but I'm not sure it means that other softwares should have hard dependencies on systemd, or that things like journaling, and others pieces of system should be related to the first process. Journaling for example should be, imho, managed in the usual way: we use stderr in programming, which is traditionally text. Since I'm not an expert at all, I can only guess that PID1 have to define the various std* streams, but if someone wants binary stuff, why not simply redirect those streams to an different application? What would be the problem with that? Why should desktops and end-user applications have to depend on systemd's parts? For mpd, for example. Ok, it's started as daemon by default, but users can run instances of it for themselves if they want, and mpd is portable. Why should it have a hard dep on libsystemd-daemon0 (it had no dep like this previously, and I doubt mpd will stop their support for windows or bsd... so it must be enabled by some sort of flag?). Indeed, it's not systemd's fault if those applications depends on it. Just imagine that fun one can have on a multi-user system by remotely: - shutting down the system - reading contents of removable storage - listening in on audio streams (even the microphone) - recording from the webcam (bonus points for disabling the activity led) If you find a way to solve this by using only traditional Unix groups I'm sure a lot of people would like to know how. I can't, but I want to ask some questions about that problem you describe. Are remote desktop the majority of linux uses? Do you really need remote capabilities when you use your own computer? What is the need of remote desktops on servers which are not dedicated? In short, is it smart to give a dependency to everyone for something which seems really addressing a problem for a minority? Especially when it makes that much noise? Indeed, it's nice to have a software able to solve those issues. But, why not only making it a opt-in, instead of opt-out? Because of the major DEs? What would be the problem with that? I'm sure someone will correct me, but as I understand it, journald does work a bit like this. It captures the stdout and stderr of the process it starts (so that, in case of an error you can say tell me what happened when to tried to start that daemon. SysVInit can't do that on its own, but programs like bootlogd help. Without bootlogd, you're left with re-running the initscript manually, which might not produce the same error). However, the storage format it uses adorns the output with extra information (I would imagine things like timing, possibly which stream the text belongs to and I believe there's also a checksum to avoid tampering/corruption). In my opinion a binary log format is probably more robust than a text format simply because it's well defined. Just as an example, there's no defined format for the timestamps in a syslog. But with a binary format, you can probably say that bytes M to N are a unix timestamp in some-endianness and any other format is junk data. Try, for example (I have not copied this from a shell, but that is the gist of what happens if one tests it): $ export TEST=x $ sudo -Es # echo $TEST x # exit $ export PATH=$PATH:test $ echo $PATH [...]:test $ sudo -Es # echo $PATH [...] -- test is missing # exit $ echo $PATH [...]:test HTH Linux-Fan signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Just for the info, your regex is not accurate, you do not include comments in it ;) but it won't change the fact that there is a problem: $ grep sleep /etc/init.d/* | wc -l 14 $ ls /etc/init.d/* | wc -l 45 Ratio: 31.1% That's my work computer, with probable unneeded historical stuff so I could probably reduce both numbers (since the start of this mail I have removed lot of them btw). Yup, the boot speed improvements come from doing things correctly and event based. The systemd suite includes logind, which is a user session management system. For mpd, for example. Ok, it's started as daemon by default, but users can run instances of it for themselves if they want, and mpd is portable. Why should it have a hard dep on libsystemd-daemon0 Because systemd is the default Linux init system for Debian jessie, and libsystemd-daemon0 provides useful functionality for running a daemon on a computer that uses systemd as its init system, (it had no dep like this previously, and I doubt mpd will stop their support for windows or bsd... so it must be enabled by some sort of flag?). I would expect that it is enabled by a build-time flag. Depending on libsystemd-daemon0 does not make a program depend on having systemd as the init system. It just means that the program can now support the most efficient of systemd's startup mechanisms without duplication the programmer having to duplicate The alternative to depending on libsystemd-daemon0 is duplicating the functionality of libsystemd-daemon0 in every daemon that wants to have optimal behaviour on systemd systems. So, when building daemons for a Linux distribution whose *default* , it makes sense to have libsystemd-daemon0 as a hard dependency. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
