I had a very similar problem on the LCP negotiation, and solved adding
SLIP support on the kernel...
It seems that pppd can't recognize LCP packets from the other end
because they are compressed using CSLIP.

I've installed Hamm on an old 486 via floppy and I'm trying to get a
connection to the net. I installed a new modem Zoom 56k model 2819A. I
ran pppconfig. When I try to dial out this is what /var/log/ppp.log
says:

What UART does this machine have on the modem port? If it is not a 16550
you should not accept pppconfig's default speed of 115200. Run pppconfig
again and set the

I have just installed Slink on my laptop with KDE 1.1.1 debs on top of

Did you try to dial you ISP with a terminal emulator, like minicom? This is
a good way to find out exactly what it expects as far as send and expect
strings.
The log looks similar to mine. My ISP uses CHAP. Have you tried making a
chap-secrets and using the name option in options?
