I did a little playing around in Inkscape earlier and it appears that it
saves all the alpha info correctly in the SVG. I could not get it to work
correctly for EPS, but that doesn't mean it's not possible.

There might be an issue when the file is exported from
Inkscape to EPS - don't know if opacity is recalculated or
just exported to flat colors.
But for the moment we might stay with the files we have.

widely recognised as symbolising the Roman alphabet (and
less prone to font details) than lowercase *a*,/a/,_a_.
