[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2008-12-01 Thread Christian A. Reiter
Agreed. I also have the problem that suddenly I have to enter my Password when
I want to ssh to a known host - ssh seems to lookup the password/Key in the
keyring - ant that is locked!
This problem is NOT solved.

I just have ONE keyring, that one that is unlocked at login time.
And somehow it does it for other programs (nm-applet e.g.).

What do you need from us solving this issue, how can we help?

[Bug 229144] Re: [hardy] screensaver fails to start and screen fails to completely black out

2008-12-01 Thread 714snoopy
I'm having this screen-saver problem on Intrepid as well:

1) I turned it off while playing a game (Padman) because when the screen saver
started the game would crash (why is the screen saver going on at all in this
case? The computer is not idle!)
2) After re-enabling the screen-saver, it will not activate.
3) I set the time-out for 1 minute to test things...
4) At 30 seconds or so, the screen starts to dim. (In "Power Management" I have
"Dim display when idle" enabled)
5) Then at 1 minute, the screen brightens back up and no screen-saver "occurs."

Now, something interesting happens:

6) Every time after this "failed" screen-saver activation, keyboard and
mouse clicks are unresponsive. (i can still move the pointer and high-
light things on the desktop ... just no click-events on menus and
applications appear to be working). But not entirely; I can CTRL-ALT-Fx
to switch to one of the TTYs and then come back to the desktop and
keyboard and mouse clicks work again.

Question: Will /var/log/message or dmesg show any debug or failure of
the screen-saver activation?

Hardware:
Dell M65 Laptop with Dual-core Intel and nVidia graphics

/Charlie

[Bug 304278] [NEW] Brasero borks if directories nested > 6 (8.10)

2008-12-01 Thread Steve Thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

Trying to burn a data dvd, after I click Burn and insert a blank DVD,
Brasero produces an error. The session log is attached, but the key line
seems to be :

BraseroGrowisofs stderr: genisoimage: Directories too deep for
'/home/steve/.mozilla/firefox/h0q6xx5w.default/extensions/[EMAIL
PROTECTED]/platform/OS2/chrome'
(7) max is 6.

Some class of compatibility with standards? There should be an option to
override this, since I only want a backup dvd compatible with Ubuntu.

[Bug 304274] [NEW] Brasero does not allow adding of hidden files (8.10)

2008-12-01 Thread Steve Thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

Opening Brasero to create a new data DVD for backup, I can select and
add visible folders and files to the project, but there seems to be no
way to show and add hidden files. [Specifically, I want to backup
.mozilla-thunderbird/]

Also, selecting "Search files using keyword" leaves all the options
grayed out, so I can't use this either.

I'm using a Dell XPS M1330, and this worked OK in Hardy (8.04).

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2008-12-01 Thread Rich Wales
And the "pam-keyring-tool" workaround didn't work for me either. I was
still being prompted for the login password.

However, it looks like I was finally able to get rid of the "unlock
keyring" prompt by using "pam-keyring-tool -c" and entering an empty
password (just hit ENTER) for the new password. So I guess maybe I have
a workaround after all. Average users, however, would probably have a
terrible time with this, so I would say there is still a serious bug.

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2008-12-01 Thread Rich Wales
Not for me, it doesn't. I upgraded a new Hardy system to Intrepid
today, and it's started demanding "Enter login password to unlock
keyring" after doing an autologin. It wasn't doing that in 8.04.1
before I did the upgrade.

This new system was going to be for my mother, who is not very computer-
savvy at all. I was hoping to convert her computer from Windows XP to
Ubuntu, but a crucial part of that plan was that the new system was
going to use autologin and timed login so she wouldn't ever need to
enter a password. (It's her home system, and she lives alone, so the
security risk of autologin is acceptable -- and I'll do all the software
updates and such which would require an admin password or "sudo".) This
seemed to be working just fine when I initially installed 8.04.1, but
upgrading to 8.10 broke it.

This is a SHOWSTOPPER. Unless I can get rid of this prompt to "unlock
the keyring", my mom simply WILL NOT ACCEPT this awkward new system and
will insist on keeping her Windows system. (Or else I guess I'll have
to wipe the new disk, reinstall Hardy, and set up everything all over
again from scratch WITHOUT upgrading to Intrepid.)

[Bug 304084] Re: Visualization Flicker

2008-12-01 Thread Tom
O, i hope you've set it up as dual boot or something rather than re-
installing all the time. Windows does often seem to be much faster on a
fresh install but slows down quite rapidly and then gradually dies off
altogether whereas Linux doesn't seem to slow-down much at all, if at
all. I'm not sure but that's the way it seems to me anyway.

[Bug 304230] [NEW] gconf-editor does not correctly resize icons

2008-12-01 Thread itsols
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gconf-editor

I wanted to reduce my desktop icon sizes and followed these on gconf-
editor:

apps > nautilus > icon_view > tumbnail_size

I set the size to 48 (from default 96) but there was no effect.

Then I removed the value in default_zoom_level and everything turned
very tiny with no text. Soon afterwards, I put the value 'standard' back
in the default_zoom_level and NOW the icons look a little bit smaller
and a bit closer to each other. But it is certainly not 48 pixels.

Hope you find it fast.

2008-12-01 Thread Jon Grosjean
Hi Pedro,

It is reproducible. I have a home and work email address for several
people, so the same name is listed two times
with different email addresses in the contact list. I would like to
send the email to both addresses

When I add the person in the To: or Cc: block, both names disappear from
the contacts
and only one email address is added. .

Sincerely,
Jon

[Bug 227808] [NEW] file permissions destroyed by vim/gvfs/fuse

2008-12-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug:

This bug is a little difficult to explain, but I will do my best. I'm
using Ubuntu Hardy Heron with no third party repositories. Every package
is up to date as of this posting.

It goes like this. When I edit files with vim or gvim through
gvfs/fuse/sftp the file permissions on the real remote file system get
destroyed. Here is a procedure you can follow to duplicate this bug. The
only non-default package you need installed is vim or gvim.

1 - Open a terminal and ssh to a remote machine.
2 - In this terminal create a text file on the remote machine, and set the
permissions to 644.
3 - Go to the Places->Connect to Server... menu item, and create an SSH
connection to the remote machine.
4 - Double click the new sftp folder icon that appears on the desktop to open
nautilus.
5 - In nautilus browse to the directory containing the text file you just
created.
6 - Use the command ls -l in the ssh terminal to verify the permissions of the
file are still 644.
7 - In nautilus right-click on the text file, open it with "Text Editor" (gedit)
8 - Make a change to the file in gedit and save it.
9 - Use the ls -l command in the terminal to verify that the permissions of the
file are still 644.
10 - Exit gedit.
11 - In nautilus right-click on the text file and select the option to open it
with "GVim Text Editor"
12 - Make some changes to the file in GVim, and save those changes.
13 - Use the ls -l command in the terminal, and you will see that the
permissions of the file are now 600, not 644.

Some interesting things to note about this bug.

If you open the text editors from the command line, instead of through
nautilus, the same problem happens.

So opening gedit like this:
gedit ~/.gvfs/sftp\ on\ remote/home/user/test.txt
will not damage the permissions.

However, opening vim like this:
vim ~/.gvfs/sftp\ on\ remote/home/user/test.txt
will damage the permissions.

Also, I notice that if you do this
ls -l ~/.gfvs/sftp\ on\ remote/home/user/
the permissions of test.txt (and every other file) will appear to be 600 (700
for directories), regardless of the file permissions on the "real" remote file
system. If you attempt to chmod any files, it will result in a chmod of the
actual permissions on the remote file system, but it will not change the
permissions of the file in the local ~/.gvfs directory.

This has led me to conclude that this bug is a combination of two
things. First, using the chmod command on files through gvfs/fuse/sftp
does not work in an expected fashion. Secondly, gvim and vim appear to
be chmod-ing files when they write to those files.

I'm not sure this bug is an actual security risk. It seems it can only
result in file permissions becoming more strict, not more permissive.
However, I have checked the security box just to be safe. If file
permissions involved, there could always be an unseen security issue. I
can see a situation where an application losing the ability to read a
needed file causes system breakage, if not a security hole.

[Bug 304084] Re: Visualization Flicker

2008-12-01 Thread Tom
Ahah. This looks like a known issue. Ati have only just recently been
kind enough to let non-Microsoft users use their graphics cards. It
might be a while before some decent open-source drivers become
available. A workaround in the meantime is to open a terminal window
(Applications menu - Accessories - Terminal) and type

gstreamer-properties

in the pop-up box choose the Video tab and from the output drop-down
list choose the option that says '... (no Xv)'

Good luck and have fun. Err if it doesn't work then you may want to
reset that setting as whatever it was before, usually 'Auto'

Have fun

[Bug 298044] Re: volume mouse wheel

2008-12-01 Thread Tom
The mouse wheel only skips along the timeline (unless its in fullscreen
mode and the mouse arrow is actually on the timeline) it cant be
configured to adjust the volume. I don't see how this bug is
'incomplete'. I have already shown that i use Ubuntu 8.10 and Totem
2.24.3. What further information is required?

The only way i can change volume is by making sure my mouse is inside
the red splodge in the attached image (if i have managed to attach it)

[Bug 304174] [NEW] opened files for a process dialog changes as position of selected process changes in process list

3. Viewing the open files for a process should not change to another
process when the order of rows in the process list changes.

4. When a process re-ordering in the process list took place, the open
files dialog I was looking at changed to some other process, yet the
title in the open files dialog reflects the original process I was
looking at. It's as if the content of the files open dialog is bound to
the row number in the process list at any give time, instead of the
contents of the row in the process list.

[Bug 304082] Re: Editing location doesn't automatically fill in location name.

2008-12-01 Thread Adam Buchbinder
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
a. Make sure there's a location added in the clock applet. To do so, click on
the date on the panel, and expand the 'Locations' spinner. There should be a
location available there.
b. Click the 'Edit' button to the right of the 'Locations' spinner. This will
pop up a 'Clock Preferences' dialog box, with the 'Locations' tab open. A list
of locations will be there, along with three buttons to the right of it: 'Add',
'Edit' and 'Remove'; all but the first will be grayed out.
c. Select a location by single-clicking it in the list. The 'Edit' button at
the right side of the dialog box will no longer be grayed out.
d. Click the 'Edit' button.
e. Observe the 'Location Name' field.

2. the behavior you expected, and
I expected the location name described in step (b) to be displayed in the
'Location Name' field.

3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
The location name described in step (b) is not displayed in the 'Location Name'
field; in fact, the 'Location Name' field is blank.

If you need more detail, please let me know and I can expand any of that
further.

[Bug 108623] Re: totem isn't buffering correctly

2008-12-01 Thread Koopee
I have also some nuisance with Totem and Youtube. It seems to me that
Totem buffers the stream in real-time. If I pause the player, the stream
ceases as Dylan said. And when I start again, the transfer rate tries to
adjust to the player data consumption rate.

I would quess that If I pause the Youtube stream long enough, Youtube
thinks that the connection is lost thus yielding Totem "Could not read
from resource." error

is to run gdb ALL THE TIME which isn't really feasable,

respawned user process I've seen shows up at the bottom of ps with a
much higher PID. While that's not scientific, its what I'm able to
provide, other than the fact that this is still a bug present in the

[Bug 304082] Re: Editing location doesn't automatically fill in location name.

2008-12-01 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 304091] [NEW] Nautilus hangs and won't cancel when FTP server fails to respond

2008-12-01 Thread Pablos544
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hi,

I am using Ubuntu 8.10 - the Intrepid Ibex i download as a CD image
about a month ago from ubuntu.com.

I have not changed the pre-installed Nautilus other than doing regular
updates via the command bar as and when they become available.

For months now I have experienced this same fustration with the problem-
ridden Nautilus 2.24.1. I mention this to somebody before (a gentleman
called Pedro) but he cancelled my report with his excuse that i had not
provided a 'crash-dump' and therefore was not 'valid' even though there
was no such dump on my system.

The problem i am experiencing now is more an annoyance than a urgent
problem, but it's been going on constantly and it seems really daft
that it's still there.

On Windows Explorer, MacroMedia Dreamweaver on Windows, and even on
Konqueror on KDE, whenever an FTP connection doesn't respond, as happens
quickly with my ISP, you can 'cancel' the operation and try again. Not
so Nautilus 2.24.1. A misleading progress bar falsely reassures you that
this all under control with a little red cross but that seems to suggest
you can cancel whenever you like but when my ISP's ftp sever plays-up as
it frequently does i try pressing it and nothing happens.

The file operation remains 'in process' indefinitely, a little hard-
drive icon is permanently stuck on the 'status' area of the command bar.

When i double-click that icon in the status area the process window
pops-up again and i notice now the red cross is a now little grey cross.
All i can do is close this window and but that's about it, the icon
remains at the top on the status bar and it doesn't matter how many
times i bring it up and press the cancel button it can never be
cancelled.

I seem to remember the older Ubuntu 8.04 allowed me to cancel this kind
of thing easily. I know this is a problem with my ISP's ftp service and
i have mentioned it to them but all i can do is complain and they still
have not improved it.

Even on Windows i could always cancel an FTP operation that had gone
wrong.

I've been suffering with this and other buggyness in Natulilus 2.24.1
that came with Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex for over a month but still
Nautilus is proving the fustration of an other excellent experience of
using Linux / Ubuntu.

Please don't just cancel this report as Pedro did previously. If you
like i can try to provide as much information as is necessary, but i
don't just cancel my report. I see other users have complained along
similar lines so i can't see how i can wong about what i am saying. A
little bit of cooperation would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Pablo.

2008-12-01 Thread Adam Buchbinder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This assumes that there's already a location added in the clock applet.

Click on the date/time applet. Expand the 'Location' section. Click
'Edit'. Select the location. Click 'Edit'. The 'Location Name' field
will be empty; if you click 'OK', the name will be blanked.

The 'Location Name' field should be filled in by default; clicking
'Edit', then 'OK' on an item should not change that item.
