[Bug 1923459] Re: evince doesn't show filename or PDF title on the title bar

2021-11-07 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This is reported at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/-/issues/1583
(thanks to Michaël Berteaux @Mikenux at
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/-/issues/996).

The bug is solved in Evince 40.2, and it looks like Ubuntu 21.10 has
Evince 40.4-2, which would include the fix.

However, this is worth backporting, please: it's really a weird nuisance
for one of the core applications on a desktop computer.

2020-10-25 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This problem is unaddressed on two computers after upgrading to Ubuntu 20.10.
Now I can using the GUI set up a custom keyboard shortcut associated witth the
"search" key, but it still does nothing. Pressing the "search" key just gives
me the desktop search.

[Bug 1861025] Re: Keyboard shortcut "Search" shows as disabled, yet it still works, and custom shortcut unable to use the Search key

2020-09-08 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This problem is no better on 20.04.

-> In the Keyboard Shortcuts dialogue, no function is assigned to the
"Search" key.
-> There is a custom keyboard shortcut assigned to Ctrl-Search. It works
fine.
-> When I try to set a custom shortcut to the Search key, instead, the desktop
pops into zoomed-out-view-all-my-windows view whenever I press the Search key,
even though I have clicked "Set Shortcut" and the key should be trapped

-> Moreover, even if I set the key with the command

gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys.custom-
keybinding:/org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/media-keys/custom-
keybindings/custom8/ binding 'Search'

It now shows up correctly in the dialogue listing shortcuts, but the
action of the key is unchanged: it still just displays the Super-key
overview view rather than carrying out my custom shortcut function

The "Search" key corresponds to pressing the F10 key, without the Fn
modifier, on this Lenovo T450s, running 20.04.

Please help me disable this behaviour that seems hard-wired to this key!
This is a regression since 19.10, as mentioned before.

[Bug 1866277] [NEW] Power Saving settings "Wi-Fi can be turned off to save power" does not work as advertised

2020-03-05 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

In Settings -> Power under the "Power Saving" section, there are the
following two on/off slider options:

Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi can be turned off to save power.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth can be turned off to save power.

Rather than controlling something to do with power-saving, eg. when battery is
low or the system is inactive, these appear to immediately turn off wifi, and
bluetooth, respectively, when the machine is a laptop and is unplugged.

Instead, they should control something more useful, or be relabeled.

[Bug 1861025] [NEW] Keyboard shortcut "Search" shows as disabled, yet it still works, and custom shortcut unable to use the Search key

2020-01-27 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Prior to the last upgrade (19.10), I used the Search key for one of my custom
keyboard shortcuts.
(I am using a Lenovo T450s, so the Search key is the button which works as F10
when the Fn key is also pressed.)

In 19.10, this is no longer possible. The Search key is initially set up
with the Search function, ie opens a magnifying glass text entry box to
look for things. If I disable that function in the Keyboard dialogue,
it still works!

And therefore I cannot use the key as I wish.

[Bug 1851134] [NEW] setting custom keyboard shortcut fails for certain keys

2019-11-03 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

I click on settings in menu or press my settings icon key (above F9 key on
Lenovo T450s keyboard). Navigate to "Keyboard Shortcuts". Scroll to bottom to
press "+" to add a custom shortcut. Define function, then click on "Set
Shortcut...". Then I press the "Explorer" key, which is above the F12 on my
keyboard. Instead of setting the shortcut, it brings up a file browser.
I can set my shortcut to shift-Explorer, but not to Explorer. This is even
though no other keyboard shortcut listed is set to this key "Explorer". The
"Home folder" Launcher is set to "Disabled".
Changing the "Home folder" launcher keyboard shortcut to something else does
not help.

Instead, once I click on "set Shortcut", it should listen to whatever I
choose.

The same problem exists for the "Search" key.

Un-locking the screen/desktop now also takes much longer than it used
to. After correctly entering the password or scanning a fingerprint,
nothing happens for a long time, and then eventually the screen is
unlocked. Could that be related?

[Bug 1735216] [NEW] Wacom UI highly insufficient

2017-11-29 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

I've been asked to post a bug (feature request?) here
(https://askubuntu.com/questions/980892/xsetwacom-wont-find-wacom-
tablet-under-17-10-but-did-with-17-04-multiple-cur) on the following
grounds:

The UI offered in Wayland for controlling a graphics tablet (such as my Wacom
Bamboo Touch on a Thinkpad T450s under Ubuntu 17.10) is nowhere near a
replacement for xsetwacom's functionality:
This tablet has both touch and a stylus. Wayland seems to know that.

 (1) a UI is never a replacement for a CLI. I have scripts which
controlled the tablet under X11, e.g. to turn touch on and off. Now I
cannot use Wayland because even if the UI was fixed, my scripts won't
work.

 (2) Wayland UI does not offer option to turn touch off

 (3) Wayland UI does not offer option to rotate the pad

 (4) Mapping the tablet (touch) to a single monitor does not work (it
still spans both my monitors)

 (5) Mapping the tablet (touch) to absolute coordinates does not work
(it is still relative)

[Bug 1021375] Re: Nautilus says the USB stick is read only when it is not

2017-10-07 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
On Latest 17.04, killall nautilus and restarting nautilus doesn't help.
Maybe I am not doing the right thing in detail.

So for a couple of years now, every time I present something at a
conference, I panic because I'm not going to be able to write my PDF
file on a USB key in order to share it -- thanks to this bug. This is
nutty.

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2016-03-13 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
When copying a large amount (multilple files) form an external drive
(USB3 cable), my brand new Lenovo T450s laptop (20GB RAM, ... high
specs) has frequent latencies/freezes. Doing nearly any operation takes
several extra seconds, with zero responsiveness (e.g. trying to move
mouse or switch to tty screen) in the mean time. Quite unusable. This
is under the latest 15.10.

[Bug 1364167] Re: Cannot modify the command (not keybinding) of a custom keyboard shortcut in latest 14.04

2014-09-01 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Oh, I think it's a bit worse than that.
Maybe this is a separate bug: When I edit the NAME of an existing custom
shortcut, it gets assigned the keybinding of a DIFFERENT existing shortcut.
I think everything is getting scrambled around.

(btw, I guessed at the package name; sorry)

[Bug 1364167] [NEW] Cannot modify the command (not keybinding) of a custom keyboard shortcut in latest 14.04

2014-09-01 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

I have made custom keyboard shortcuts by choosing system settings ->
keyboard -> shortcuts -> custom

It gets called when I press the assigned key, but now I want to edit the
command, since there was a typo or because I want to modify it.

I click on the entry. Up comes a dialog. I edit the "command" field, and
click "Apply" (the only other option is Cancel).

The dialog disappears, as though successful, but the shortcut isn't
changed.

When I click on the entry again, I get the old version, before my edits.

[Bug 1245263] [NEW] touchpad settings revert to defaults within a minute of choosing them

2013-10-27 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Using the latest 13.04, I open Settings, and under "Mouse and Touchpad",
I change the speed of the touchpad pointer from its middling value to
the maximum on the scale.

It has an immediate effect; I can now scroll across my screen without
lifting my finger.

However, within a minute, the improved behaviour goes away. No change
is visible in the settings interface, initially.

If I change to "All Settings" tab and back to "Mouse and Touchpad", I
see that indeed the default has been reinstated.

So it is impossible for me to permanently change the touchpad behaviour.

Thanks! for your detective work.

TMPDIR is still /tmp, but

ls -la /tmp

Yes, your solution works. Thank you!!

So, is the crashing experience a bug? Maybe I leave that for you to

[Bug 956972] [NEW] Timer in Displays dialogue goes negative

2012-03-16 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Unfortunately, the image is nearly going to have to speak for itself. Notice
the number of seconds remaining. I don't know what happened, but 0 was missed
and it went on counting forever, until I closed it.
I think this should be fixable by changing an == to an <= somewhere, but
there's not more I can say because I haven't reproduced it.

I don't know how to do that.

Actually, I now use 11.10 and I can't even seen how to get Empathy or
whatever is on the menus at the top of my screen to let me add my SIP account
anymore.

[Bug 872841] Re: Nautilus fails to use gvfs backends when used over ssh

2011-11-16 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
By the way, after intervening updates, it seems the problem doesn't
occur any more as originally described. Now when I try to launch
nautilus:

$  nautilus
Could not register the application: Error connecting: Connection refused

and if instead I try

$dbus-launch nautilus
Initializing nautilus-dropbox 0.6.8
** (nautilus:15129): DEBUG: Syncdaemon not running, waiting for it to start in

usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory
/var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory

it comes up fine and I can view Trash etc normally. I guess I'll have to
look up what "dbus" is... It seems bad that I have to behave differently
if I'm not logged in locally, ie whatever happened to X transparency?

[Bug 861389] Re: after screen dims (idle / screensaver), cannot rebrighten it

2011-10-27 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 872652 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/872652

As far as I can tell, it probably is, so I'm marking it as such.
Btw, although the workaround of a user-level setting to never dim the screen
works in part, the screen will also dim on lightdm before anyone has logged in,
if one waits long enough. Then the screen also cannot be rebrightened, and
logging in does not reawaken/rebrighten it.

[Bug 872841] Re: Attempting to view Trash in Nautilus gives "The folder contents could not be displayed" ..."Operation not supported"

2011-10-20 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
[Please ignore post above.] The 3rd paragraph is wrong. The first two
are correct:

(Delay in response: this clean installation of 11.10 with no exotic
installs melted down, so that I could only log in on tty! I have just
reinstalled 11.10 from scratch, clean. The bug reported here recurred.)

Ah, yes, there's a key caveat. Logged in locally, nautilus behaves okay.
I mostly log in remotely from a machine (both with Internet addresses)
right next to it. When logged in over ssh -X, nautilus comes up fine but
fails when asked to show Trash or Computer.

In fact, once I have launched nautilus locally ONCE, it seems to work
okay remotely, too. So that means to reproduce this I might need to
reinstall. Weird. But still a problem for servers which may never get a
local login.

[Bug 874073] [NEW] pop-up notification hides when mouse reaches it

2011-10-14 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

A popup notification in the top right shows me a text message someone
sent me through one of my empathy accounts. when i mouse up to click on
it, hoping it will either make it go away or take me to its master (a

where it was, and reappears when my mouse leaves. How opposite-to-
useful!

[Bug 872841] [NEW] Attempting to view Trash in Nautilus gives "The folder contents could not be displayed" ..."Operation not supported"

[Bug 861389] [NEW] after screen dims (idle / screensaver), cannot rebrighten it

2011-09-28 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

This feature worked fine in 11.04. Now, if I leave my screen for a couple of
minutes it dims. When I press a key, it only brightens a little bit. I can
hardly see what I'm typing right now.
Before the first such dimming, using the brightness keys works fine to control
brightness. AFter the first screensave, they don't work.

The laptop is plugged in.

When I press a key after it's gone into powersaving/screensaving mode, the
screen should rebrighten.
Also, the controls for brightness should continue to work.

[Bug 813821] [NEW] Empathy fails to answer a SIP call, blocks normal call forwarding.

2011-07-20 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

I have set up empathy with its SIP plugin to answer calls to my SIP VOIP
account.
It used to work, and I have done nothing but updates to change its settings.
Incoming calls still work if linphone-3 is up and running.
But if empathy is running, calls to my SIP phone number (through
freephoneline.ca) don't answer AND, worst of all possible failures, do not even
ring properly or give a busy or etc signal. Under proper functioning, if I
don't answer after several seconds on SIP, my phone number will forward on to
my office phone and cell phone and voicemail. But empathy is blocking that, so
that people ringing my phone number get just silence -- no connection, no
forwarding, no voicemail.

[Bug 672650] [NEW] two-finger scroll on Lenovo T410s should be available, but isn't

2010-11-08 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Hello. The option for 2-finger scrolling is greyed out in the gnome-
mouse-properties dialog under Ubuntu 10.10 on Lenovo T410s.

Yet doing the following:

xinput set-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Synaptics Two-Finger Scrolling" 1 0
xinput set-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Synaptics Two-Finger Pressure" 20

results in a perfectly working two-finger vertical scroll.
This should be a basic built-in function for the distribution on Lenovo's most
popular line.

Hm, I do not know whether htis is a feature request or a bug.

[Bug 671565] [NEW] GUI launch fails strangely when done from a secondary login, ssh -X

2010-11-05 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Here's what I did:

ssh -X secondu...@localhost
evince myfile.pdf

ie, after logging in as a different user, I launch evince. It does not fully
die (ie it stays in the foreground / I don't get my prompt back), but no window
comes up and I get:

Failed to get bus connection: Command line `dbus-launch
--autolaunch= --binary-syntax --close-stderr'
exited with non-zero exit status 1: EOF in dbus-launch reading address
from bus daemon\n

(where I've removed some hexy code in case it's private).

Other applications like xterm and acroread launch just fine.

[Bug 657544] [NEW] key bindings fail in multiple ways: names are wrong, new assignments don't work

2010-10-09 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

After a recent update?? my key-binding for launching a new terminal (Alt -F1 in
my account) did not work. I launched the keybinding GUI and typed Alt-F1 for
this action and it read my keys as Alt-XF86Battery.
It nevertheless worked after that.
Next time I booted/logged in, same problem, but this time after resetting it
again, the key combination Alt-F1 still does nothing.

IT seems somthing is quite corrupted with the key-bindings.

[Bug 624116] [NEW] mousepad edge jumps despite "edge scrolling" turned off

2010-08-25 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I've a Zareason Lightlap (Asus S62E).
Only about 5/6 of my mousepad is usable because the right edge behaves very
erratically /jumps, as though it were allocated for edge scrolling, even though
it isn't (not according to settings, and not in effect). I use 2-finger
scrolling, which works nicely.

It used to be, and I would like it to be, that the entire mousepad can
be used for navigation.

The problem was not fixed in 9.04. I am running the latest update. I
have an extended desktop with the extension on top of my primary

icons of windows. Windows only show up on the taskbar if they are more
than 50% in the bottom part (screen) of my extended display.

[Bug 133543] Gutsy: evince 0.9.3 fails to "save a copy" of PDF, without warning or error

2007-08-19 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Under Gutsy, I make a PDF from LyX. It pops up in Evince 0.9.3. I choose the
available option "Save a copy" under "File" in Evince.

[Bug 133541] Gutsy: expand window to full height now goes to far in GNOME

2007-08-19 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgnome-window-settings1

Using keyboard shortcuts, I have set a key (F8 in my case) to make the
window manager expand the current window to full *height*, leaving the
width unchanged.

It recently stopped working nicely: now it expands windows so that the bottom
of them is invisible below my lower Gnome panel.
The expand to full height and width function still works fine. The expand to
full width function works fine, even if I have a Gnome panel on the side -- ie
it expands so as not to overlap the panel. The expand to full height (the one
that is broken) does not make an error concerning the top panel, only a bottom
panel.

Correct behaviour would be for "Expand vertically" to expand to the full
height minus the top and bottom panels.

[Sorry -- I have just guessed at the package.]

[Bug 72284] All nautilus windows become unresponsive when asked to copy a large directory into burn:///

2006-11-17 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner

I can't think of a more basic task for nautilus cd burner to be able to
handle... so not sure what's wrong.

I'm on the latest edgy.
I insert a blank CD. I choose to make a data CD.
I open another nautilus window.

I drag a large folder (20 MB in 1400 files) with simple filenames from
nautilus window to nautilus burn:/// window.

Both windows hang forever.

Does anyone have this working at a basic level?
Is there another way to make my CD easily?

[Bug 69411] Re: GNOME CD burner hangs on "Write to Disc" dialog

2006-11-17 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Same problem here, with the latest fresh edgy, but I am not trying to
copy a complex structure.

I am just trying to burn three shallow directories albeit with lots
(2000) files adding up to not much (100 MB). I cannot get it written,
neither to the CD nor to an ISO file.

The greyed-out dialog actually becomes ungrayed if a second nautilus
burn:/// is opened, a write attempted, and then the application is
killed violently. But then the first dialog, now ungrayed, still hangs
immediately.

This seems a rather fundamental operation failure.

[Bug 69777] Menu has no highlighting

I installed edgy fresh, but with some old /home. New users work okay, but my
Dapper user gets no visible highlighting etc when using the menu in the top
gnome-panel. I click on a menu and can navigate, can see the cursor (an arrow),
but I cannot tell which item is highlighted (submenus pop open on mouseover,
but I have to guess which item they correspond to). I can even click on items
to launch them.

I don't know what else to say, yet. I am hoping others are seeing this

Moreover, most keystrokes, such as arrow navigation or page down, which
might be able to help this situation, are not accepted by the applet (it
doesn't take the focus?).

The window must be resizable, the lookup-word font smaller, less space
under the title, and a vastly better scrolling interface is needed.

The only way to use it right now is to try to highlight everything in
the window, and then paste it into another application to read it!

There also needs to be SOME way to make the window go away other than
mouse-clicking on the dictionary icon in the panel.

I'm using the latest Dapper. The problem exists regardless of whether the panel
is on a side edge or top/bottom.
I believe things were much better under breezy, but I can't remember exactly
how it worked.
