I have a theory that this might happen when I have set a user account to disabled under System - Administration - Users and Groups. I'm still having problems with users' going missing on the login screen. I've not made any changes to the Users and Groups since I first installed Ubuntu 11.04 (64-bit) on this computer. The bug happens most of the time for me too, on one of my Ubuntu machines, even with all current updates. At random times it works normally, though. This is a blot on Ubuntu's front door. Thanks for the information. I've managed to move the file into /etc/gdm with the IncludeAll=true in the [greeter] section. I had to search online to see how to move a file using the terminal, but I've done it now and I'll see if this fixes the problem. The /etc/gdm directory is owned by root. You need to run sudo su and enter your password, to gain root privileges. I've noticed that if Ubuntu boots up a little slower, then all the users appear on the login screen. If Ubuntu boots up faster, there's only the one user on the login screen i.e. the user account created first during Ubuntu installation. My install is quite old, I think it was originally a 7.10 or so (when I switched to x64), so the file might come from a previous version (I have a backup from March 2009). I attached the file so that you can also give it a try. Note that the explanations in the header do not apply anymore (most of gdmflexiserver options have been deprecated). Anyway, I just figured out the bug is still present on my machine. @Jonathan A. Marshall I installed Ubuntu onto my new PC back in April and the hardware has not changed at all. I still have this problem with the login screen. There are 3 user accounts and I regularly see the other names are missing, just my name is showing. Then other times all 3 usernames are on the login screen. This is a significant bug -- it affects the front door to the entire Ubuntu experience. Why doesn't my account appear on the main login screen? Only one account is shown, along with a line for Other. Ubuntu 11.04, fully updated. This seems to happen intermittently. It seems to be possibly linked somehow to hardware. I added more memory to the PC. On the next boot, this problem occurred. Shutting down and restarting doesn't help. Another symptom: When the one user whose name appears on the login screen logs in, and then logs out, the normal login screen with all users is restored. Do you need any more information? This problem affects me and others. It's annoying when I have to share the computer and the other usernames are not on the list. I have the same issue. At random (I would say about one third of the time), some users do not appear, and they are not always the same ones. It doesn't seem to be a pattern. @turbolad at the bottom, under the list of users, there is an option that says: Others... (or something similar, I use ubuntu in another language). The same for me. Only the first user appears in gdm and this happens just randomly. If I log in to the first user and then log out then all users appear again. This happens to me also. I can't seem to find a consistent way to reproduce it, sometimes on boot my account is the only one that shows in the user list, but other times it works fine. @seanlano What you describe happens to me - exactly as you explain it. It was never a problem on my old PC with Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit, but this bug has appeared in Ubuntu 11.04 (64-bit) on my new PC.
