Oh, actually this sounds like it might be related to USB or other kernel
problems.
Next time the problem happens, reboot to recover the machine and then
run this command to collect the log of the previous (frozen) boot:
journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt
and attach the file 'prevboot.txt' here.
Yes if you're using Xorg (the default "Ubuntu" session) then mouse
cursor movement is done by the Xorg process so it will keep moving even
if gnome-shell was frozen.
I meant that you should run 'top' before the problem happens and leave
it running so you can watch that window.

Although I move back to Windows (*it was needed for my job).
I remember that I when was copying between local directories or from a
directory to the my ext. HDD was behaving ok the problem appears when copying
straight to the desktop (*not the folder).

the gio command line utility? Do you get any error in the journalctl log
or in the nautilus UI when trying to copy to the base directory?

gdm3 under Ubuntu 18.04 amd64 doesn't save/restore the last session you
logged into, instead it always reverts to GNOME (that's the case if you
have GNOME installed at least). If you want to use any other desktop it
has to be manually chosen from the session menu every time
Daniel, since you are dealing with many reports on
screensavers/screenlockers, have you seen this before?
