This problem appeared for me as well, using Empathy on Unity on a 64 bit 12.04 system, around the same time I installed gnome-online-accounts and gnome-contacts (I installed gnome-shell to try out), but was only sporadic. It could only be fixed by logging out of Ubuntu and back in. I recently

I really wish I could give you the steps to reproduce it, but I never figured out a pattern. What I can tell you about the bug is this: - it didn't appear until I installed gnome-contacts and gnome-online-accounts - normally empathy would work fine, but everyonce in a while when I opened the

Workaround: With the package 'gnome-contacts' installed it is possible for me to open a chat window by pressing the little chat button appearing next to ones contact Chat ID (see attachment). advice: In gnome-shell one can directly look for the contacts typing its name after prompting the search
