The icons are used in the system menu, and obviously in System Settings
itself. And I don't understand the other two options. If unity-control-
center started out as an exact copy of gnome-control-center, why doesn't
it include the same icons as gnome-control-center does? Did someone
delete them?

For me this bug causes Skype to crash X (mentioned in linked bug
1286039). System worked fine on 13.04 and 13.10 (over-eager upgrade to
14.04 to get 5.1 HDMI sound working!).
This can be worked around by unplugging the USB webcam and then changing
the Skype settings to not use a camera - then the
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.
