Title:
amdgpu causes GTK4/Libadwaita, etc. rendering text with missing
  characters

Status in gtk4 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
UPDATE: It seems to be related with `amdgpu` driver, which is the
default driver in Ubuntu. After disabling `amdgpu`, problem vanishes.
However, software rendering is not a perfect solution.

IT SEEMS THAT `amdgpu` in later updates of Ubuntu 23.10 & 24.04 are
BUGGY. As no driver alternatives are available right now for Ubuntu
24.04, now I am having a hard time.

[UPDATE] Updating to Ubuntu 24.04 DO NOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM
Before updating to Ubuntu 24.04, I do sudo apt upgrade to update my packages
on Ubuntu 23.10 first.
[UPDATE] Updating to Ubuntu 24.04 DO NOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM

Then I found that every program in GTK4/Libadwaita renders with
missing characters, even gdm (I cannot take a screenshot of gdm, but
  the problems are the same).

I toggled "Antialising" in GNOME tweaks, and some characters return
TEMPORARILY. Then I opened a new GTK4/Libadwaita program, problems re-
  occur.

Besides, problems exist in Xorg/Wayland, as Ubuntu 23.10 uses
  Xwayland.

Problems exist in Plasma. Texts in desktop icons are missing, too.

AND I FOUND THAT the "Graphics" Section (the driver name) has been
changed to "AMD Readon 680M" after the update (I think it is something
like "AMD Rembrandt" before sudo apt upgrade). (I toggled in GNOME
tweaks to make the window display graphics info; if I re-open it,
  fonts will be missing again)

If I hover on the place where text should display, some texts may
  display but icons would not.

This problem affects my life qualify, thus I need to make clear where
it is the problem. GTK4? Libadwaita? Graphics? Ubuntu? Because
problems does not occur on GTK3 based apps, thus I can submit this
  issue in Firefox.

I tried to open GNOME Calendar and use journalctl to capture logs

If I opened gnome-calendar in terminal, terminal has no new errors
  messages appending.

Disabling amdgpu makes the problem to vanish, however software
rendering is not an acceptable option for a Ubuntu Desktop user.

  Thanks in advance.

  As explained here (

the way Thunderbird is themed is not « standard ».

But custom css might achieve … something ?

I've tried but I lack knowledge.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2017466] Re: LibreOffice Format | Paragraph | Proportional defaults to 6%

Title:
LibreOffice Format | Paragraph | Proportional defaults to 6%

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When I open a new document in Libreoffice, and try to format line
spacing for a paragraph, and when I choose "Proportional," the default
value to begin with is 6%. This has been the case for many years,
through many fresh installs of Ubuntu and LO.

It is not possible that this would be a setting on my machine alone,
because it persists even on a fresh install. I do not think it is
possible that I may be picking the setting up from any documents I
have previously edited, because the setting persists even when I try
to do a purge, reinstall, and factory reset of the app. I may be
  missing something, but what?

I have filed this bug with the Document Foundation. They have tested
it and say it is not their bug. The default value in the LO 7.5
download from their website is 100% on their machines.

I have tried purging LO, installing the packages from their website,
and factory-resetting my user profile (necessary because even when I
did an apt-get --purge, my recent documents were still showing). The
6% figure is still showing. And so it is neither in the LO install
itself, nor in the Ubuntu config files affected by apt purge.

The bug report will show that I do not have LO installed. That is
because I left the LO 7.5 packages installed awaiting further
  instructions from LO.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1949522] Re: Ruler in dark theme not visible

2022-11-26 Thread Adolfo Jayme Barrientos
I recently backported this patch
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/commit/?h=libreoffice-7-4=2e9122f79b2573647a77bdfb2216934a5abda778

improved display from versions 7.5.0 and 7.4.4 on (the LO series for

Bug description:
In all Ubuntu based distributions I have found that in applications
such as LibreOffice Calc where I need to see formats applicable to my
locale en_ZA (South Africa) the decimal place is denoted by , in the
application even though the file /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_ZA is
correct in specifying the decimal place as denoted by a .

This is the same for monetary values where it is showing , in
applications instead of the . as specified in the locale file. The
comma was deprecated in South Africa in the 1990s and the generally
  accepted decimal is .

This makes it extremely difficult to transfer Windows Excel files that
have decimal points to a Linux distro that strictly enforces
recognising a decimal with a comma and hence renders the Windows Excel
  file useless in Linux.

The Windows feature of customising locales in terms of date, time,
decimal place and digit grouping within the GUI is sorely missing from
all desktops in Linux and so this cannot be fixed by the end-user.

Title:
libreoffice-calc very slow to open/save documents with large cell
  contents

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Libreoffice-calc 3.6 takes a long time (30sec to minutes) to open/save
spreadsheets containing cells with a lot of content. This is a
regression from libreoffice 3.5 in 12.04 (tested with
  1:3.5.4-0ubuntu1)

  To reproduce:
  1) Open the attached spreadsheet, which contains 1 cell with ~4k characters
in it

  Expected results:
Spreadsheet opens quickly (<2sec on my 2.4Ghz Core2Duo w/ SSD)

  Actual results:
Libreoffice splash screen shows, libreoffice window is displayed as a gray
rectangle with no content, and libreoffice window then becomes unresponsive.
CPU usage is at 100% on one core. The system stays in this state for ~30sec.
The document eventually opens and libreoffice functions normally.

Saving documents with lots of data in a cell takes just as long as
opening/reading those documents, with similar symptoms - libreoffice
becomes unresponsive, one CPU core is at full utilization, etc.

The amount of text in the cell is directly correlated to the length of
time required to open/save the doc.

Now, this IS a bore, because my users all tell me about this, and they, just
as myself, DID close and restart, and nothing changed; still the same. apt-get
update && apt-get upgrade wouldn't help.
Now, for the sysadmin this is plain crxx; because the users are seriously
worried.

The workaround is a snap refresh. Okay, simple. But cumbersome for the
users and their admin. It just ought not happen, I think.

  maybe this problem exists for more dialog-windows in LibreOffice;
this problem does not occur in the open/save-dialog-window (I think, it is
because the open/save-dialog-window uses the LXQt File Dialog)

  sudo apt install libreoffice-kf5
  sudo apt remove libreoffice-qt5

now the VLC is set to gtk3 (this information can be found in: Help>About

This irritating nag is apparently supposed to display every 90 to 180

there's apparently also a "Help us make LibreOffice even better!"
  banner that can appear too.

  According to this blog post...

Upgraded to 22.04 LTS (20.04 no issues).

Using Nvidia 4xx series driver. 48GB RAM, dual 1080ti gpu, i7 cpu.

LibreOffice Writer constantly lags, losing function, freezes (does not
crash) with any type of writer document (odt or xslx). New single page
or existing multi-page documents, doesn't matter, same issue after a
minute or two. Hates text selection, mouse-wheel scrolling is a tell-
tale sign. New Writer windows opened during lag are black. CPU usage
in htop is very high for soffice.bin, ~60 - 80%. Must pkill the
soffice.bin and use file recover but lag freeze up will occur again
  soon after opening.

I experience the issue with all three installation methods: snap,
distro command-line install, or using the LibreOffice ppa "fresh".

I've tried changing OpenCL settings, disabling all extensions, disable
smooth scrolling, disabling java, have purged install/reinstall and
limiting to single window. I have the Marco ppa installed (ppa:ubuntu-
mate-dev/marco). Doesn't seem to matter or what mate-tweak option is
selected. LO using Yaru or other theme; doesn't matter same effect.

Terminal does not show me any helpful errors when Writer is called
directly from command line, at least I can easily identify.

Guessing this is upstream of MATE and a libreoffice thing; a few
similar issues around the web but no good workaround.

I can update my exact specs and kernel later as required.

  Thanks!

Hello, unfortunately I am not familiar with Ubuntu anymore since a
decade so hopefully I'm filing this bug correctly (I am using ubuntu-
bug which reportbug recommended to me); that said, my problem is...

The name-brand computer in the topic is almost perfectly Linux*
compatible, except for the fact the conventional green audio socket on
the back is not detected; however, the rear inputs (mic & line) as
well as the front jack (combo headphone+mic, only tested the former)
  do in fact work fine!

  * The problem also manifests in Devuan Chimaera (5.10 and 5.18) and
  Fedora

I am willing to cooperate in testing if you need to!

Previews for applications are really slow to display anything

Status in unity-lens-applications package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
I'm seeing rightly on forums and generally the Internet that 100scopes
previews are slow, combined with the fact that we now have the left
click showing the preview by default frustrate a lot of users.

On my beefy machine (i7, 8G of rams), the preview for an application
takes 3/4s to show, you can't do anything meanwhile as there is no
button to launch the application (because you didn't double click,
just left click and thought "argh, I should have double click").

Because of this, we are making the 1st landing of 100 scopes
experience bad and we should fix it (at least, in that applicatoin
lens) by either preloading the software-center-dbus
  (/usr/share/software-center/software-center-dbus) daemon (we can't
have it always running as it's taking over 100MB of memory) when
hovering an app lens result, or when it's the first result (so can be
  directly triggered by pressing [Enter])

IMPORTANT: this bug has enough information; please don't post

to this bug you only make it harder for a developer to spot the gem
comments. Please use the me too feature of launchpad to signal that
you are affected and would like to see this fixed.

I installed smbfs, and then put some entries into /etc/fstab, so they
automount on startup. An example of this is here:
//ip address of nas box/share name /home/hamish/directory name cifs
credentials=/home/hamish/.smbcredentials,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,uid=1000,gid=1000
  0 0

** note the use of cifs in the lines above **

(The username and password are in the .smbcredentials file)

On startup, for each entry in the /etc/fstab file, I get the following in
dmesg:
[ 70.495504] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to IPv4 socket. Aborting operation
  [ 70.495569] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -101
But the shares are mounted, and a nautilus session opens up (which is also
annoying...)

Also logging off with CIFS shares mounted in /etc/fstab, it sits with an
error message:
  CIFS VFS: server not responding
CIFS VFS: no response for cmd 50 mid this number changes
And takes about 2 minutes to timeout. This also happened with Gutsy

Should the timing of the mounting and dismounting be changed so that
it works? It is related to the starting of network-manager and CIFS
shares trying to connect on startup *before* the network is up, and
dismounting the shares *after* network-manager is stopped.

  Hamish

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: evince

  I opened this document: http://www.two-
  sdg.demon.co.uk/curbralan/papers/IfIHadAHammer.pdf in evince, and it
looked horrible and hard to read. As far as I can tell, the cause is
the PDFs wish to use fonts (AGaramond) that aren't installed in my
system. Evince substitutes the fonts so I see something other than a
blank page, which is good, but since the metrics of the new font don't
match the missing font, the text looks horrible.

I think it would be nice of Evince to notify me (unobtrusively, by a
yellow bar above the document, with a close button on the right, just
like Firefox does these days) that some of the fonts weren't available
so the document may not display properly.

Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large
screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window
somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way up
to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used for
the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since
Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to
switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by
many desktop users. Please try to find a solution for it that works.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
[ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

  -
  Desired change:

Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will
address the issue described in this bug and also issues described in
the duplicates of this bus. Note this is the 'official' bug that
tracks the implementation of this project.

The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

  ---
  Menus
  Location:Global/Local
  Visibility: Hidden/Always displayed

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1246583] Re: All hotkeys of LibreOffice don't work in non-English keyboard layout [ubuntu 13.10]

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:

Status in “libreoffice” package in Fedora:

Bug description:
Hotkeys (Ctrl+b, Ctrl+s etc) in LibreOffice are language dependent and
work in English language only. While writing in any other language
i.e. any Cyrillic, it's impossible to use hotkeys, they just don't do
anything. Switching to English input language enable hotkeys once
again. This is very frustrating as user needs to switch language to
save document, to make it bold, or italic, etc.

This was not experienced in Ubuntu 13.04.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. System Settings Text Entry.
  2. Add another keyboard layout beside English [In my case it is Bengali
(Probhat)]
  3. Now launch Writer.
  4. Switch the keyboard layout from English (US) to Bengali (Probhat) by
pressing Ctrl+Space.
  5. Press Ctrl+B to change font weight to bold.

  Error:
Font weight does not get changed.

  Expected:
Font weight should change to bold.

  Note:
none other system hotkeys work as expected. I.e. Ctrl+s to save, or Ctrl+b to
subscript, or Ctrl+i to italic etc.

  Workaround:
The only way is to -
  1. change the keyboard layout to English
  2. then press desired hotkey
  3. then switch keyboard layout back to Bengali.

The issue is critical, as it make writer very slow for keyboard-only
  typing.

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
The main libreoffice icon seen in the dash is too bland.

I can see that it is attempting to represent in the most minimal way
the overall office suite (by not including text, cells, formulae,
etc), however, subtracting all content from the icon gives it an
overly ascetic air which on quick glance tends to look a little like a
  broken image icon.

I suggest that the current icon be replaced with one which contains
elements of all (or atleast the most popular) libreoffice tools. For
example, it could display a combination of all of the following:

  - a single letter (to represent Writer)
  - a single cell (to represent Calc)
  - a bar graph/chart (to represent Impress)
  - a simple shape (to represent Draw)

This would allow a quick visual scan to determine what the icon
  represents.

Title:
System reboots and shutdown even if someone is logged in

Status in “unity-greeter” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The system can be rebooted from login screen even if another user is logged
in, this could cause that user to loose changes to open files or cause some
other kind of damage.
  How to reproduce:
  1) Log in to your account
  2) Lock screen (CTR+ALT+L)
  3) Move the mouse to show password prompt
  4) Click Switch User - it takes you to lightdm login prompt
  5) Click restart in the power menu (upper right corner)
What should happen: lightdm would demand that all users log out before
rebooting
  What happens: system reboots

Status in “gnome-panel” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This bug is related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
  /gnome-panel/+bug/774427 which was recently fixed.

Right clicking on certain applets in the second display causes the
popup menu to show up on the first display. It is important to note
that this occurs on configurations with multiple X-servers not with
Twin-View. It happens with at least the following applets:

Window List
Window Selector
Workspace Switcher

And possibly the clock applet as well.

I already tested the following patch but it did not help:

  panel/commit/?id=8261b19d008b92ab614ca6e3797b65ca125cec34

Latest version in CTAN can be found here:

Bug description:
The package texlive-latex-extra is out of date. Of course I have
already run sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade. Just one
example: compare the version of the moderncv template found in
/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/moderncv/ whith the updated one in
  CTAN
  http://ftp.gui.uva.es/sites/ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/moderncv

This older version doesn't work with the the examples provided in
CTAN. I imagine that the other templates found in this package are out
  of date too.

A patch until it is updated is:
  wget http://mirrors.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/moderncv/moderncv.cls
http://mirrors.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/moderncv/moderncvcompatibility.sty
http://mirrors.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/moderncv/moderncvthemecasual.sty

http://mirrors.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/moderncv/moderncvthemeempty.sty
http://mirrors.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/moderncv/tweaklist.sty
  sudo mv moderncv* /usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/moderncv/
  sudo mv tweaklist.sty /usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/moderncv/
sudo texhash #este comando actualiza los ficheros

Anyway the modercv template still needs some updates in order to
remove the warning from hyperref, but that is another bug

  [IMPACT]

   * This bug at a minimum completely breaks adding Gmail accounts to
Evolution either directly or with GNOME Online Accounts (GOA). Yahoo
  Mail is probably also affected.

   * I think this also broke Google Contacts support in the Contacts app
as provided by GOA, and may have caused problems in Thunderbird. Both
Thunderbird Contacts are included in the default Ubuntu image.

  [TESTCASE]

   1. Add a Google account, either through Evolution directly or with GNOME
Online Accounts (Run gnome-control-center online-accounts)
   2. Without this fix, the Google account will appear to be set up but won't
actually show up in Evolution.
   3. After applying the fix, log out and log back in (to ensure that the old
evolution services are quit and the new ones started).
   4. The Google account that you already added in step 1 will magically work.

Note that if you tried multiple times to get Gmail in Evolution
working earlier, those multiple attempts should now be working. Click
EditPreferences and delete the extra duplicate Gmail accounts.

  [Regression Potential]
Zero. This is only installing missing files to fix a high priority bug.

  Original bug report
  ==
In quantal, I am unable to create any gmail account in Evolution. When I
enter my gmail address in the setup wizard, the summary shows that everything
is recognized correctly, but when I validate, no account has been created. I
have tried with another IMAP account (@free.fr), and it works perfectly.

This is a usability issue, not a software bug.

Bug #1249305 refers: (LibreOffice Calc frozen)

My problem was not knowing the package name:

The HELP that told me to use ALT-F2 could usefully have told me the
application package names current in the stack for me to choose from.
My initial guess was not recognised after a long search!

Not knowing the name, I tried ubuntu-bug with no argument. Nothing.

After re-reading the help I used ps to find the PID (hardly a user
facility!) used the PID as the argument.

May I suggest a drop down package selector based on the applications
using the largest open files in user space could help the reporting
  process.

  Thanks

  DrC

PS Is it deliberately hard to find how to report a bug on opening a
new Launchpad window? I failed, and only got here by using 'open in a
new window on the bug report you opened automativcally for me.

2013-10-27 Thread Adolfo Jayme Barrientos
I wonder what is wrong with you [...]

What's wrong ith us? Nothing. What about you? Please read and
understand points 1, 2 and 3 of
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html

This kind of hateful comments is so wrong. It just shows your (lack
of) respect for others’ work. Let’s work on that, please.

Open source projects are a meritocracy. If you want to be heard, why
don’t you help us, instead of insulting? Y’know, I tend to ignore the
naysayers.

Thank you, from a volunteer bug triager who has done nothing to
receive insults in his inbox. ;-)

Bug description:
After a suspend/resume, network-manager claimed that wireless was not
available and would not let me reconnect to the wireless here.
'iwlist wlan1 scan' would also not work; so thinking that it was a
driver problem, I rebooted the system. When it came back up, nm-
applet in lightdm claimed that networking was disabled, and the option
to enable it was greyed out. It could also not be enabled by nmcli.
I ended up stopping network-manager, bringing up the interface via
/etc/network/interfaces, and logging in... at which point, restarting
network-manager *did* let me enable networking from my logged-in
  session.

So there are several problems here:
   - after a reboot, network-manager claimed networking was disabled.
   - nm-applet is not letting me enable networking from the lightdm session.
   - the networking was failing after a suspend/resume cycle, and could not be
enabled even from inside the user session.

The last issue probably *was* a kernel driver problem; but the first
two issues are network-manager problems of some kind.

Bug description:
  === Release Notes Text ===

When connecting to MPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 wifi networks which do not have
a CA Certificate network manager may incorrectly mark the CA
certificate as needing verification and fail that verification. See
  the bug for workarounds.

I can connect to Eduroam in 12.10 and any other previous release, but
not in 13.04. I checked, my name and password are correct, all

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1195481] Re: [power]: gnome-control-center crashes if indicator-power is not installed in Unity

Title:
[power]: gnome-control-center crashes if indicator-power is not
  installed in Unity

Status in One Hundred Papercuts:
  Triaged
Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [ Description ]

  gnome-control-center's power panel crashes when indicator-power isn't
  installed.

  [ Test case ]

  1. Uninstall indicator-power
  2. Open System Settings and click Power
  3. System Settings crashes

At 3 it shouldn't crash. If you have indicator-power installed, you
should see the option to configure whether it shows.

  [ Regression potential ]

This adds some new code to check if the GSettings schema is installed, since
that's a reliable way to check for indicator-power's presence, and is what the
code modifies. It also makes the option appear in DEs other than Unity.

There's a chance that the GSettings schema-detection work could be wrong. It
also wouldn't hurt to check non-Unity environments such as a gnome-panel
  session.

  [ Original report ]

I see that unity recommends indicator-power; let's make it a depends
  instead.
