[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2063520] Re: amdgpu causes GTK4/Libadwaita, etc. rendering text with missing characters
** Package changed: ubuntu => gtk4 (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gtk4 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2063520 Title: amdgpu causes GTK4/Libadwaita, etc. rendering text with missing characters Status in gtk4 package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: UPDATE: It seems to be related with `amdgpu` driver, which is the default driver in Ubuntu. After disabling `amdgpu`, problem vanishes. However, software rendering is not a perfect solution. IT SEEMS THAT `amdgpu` in later updates of Ubuntu 23.10 & 24.04 are BUGGY. As no driver alternatives are available right now for Ubuntu 24.04, now I am having a hard time. [UPDATE] Updating to Ubuntu 24.04 DO NOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM Before updating to Ubuntu 24.04, I do sudo apt upgrade to update my packages on Ubuntu 23.10 first. [UPDATE] Updating to Ubuntu 24.04 DO NOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM Then I found that every program in GTK4/Libadwaita renders with missing characters, even gdm (I cannot take a screenshot of gdm, but the problems are the same). I toggled "Antialising" in GNOME tweaks, and some characters return TEMPORARILY. Then I opened a new GTK4/Libadwaita program, problems re- occur. Besides, problems exist in Xorg/Wayland, as Ubuntu 23.10 uses Xwayland. Problems exist in Plasma. Texts in desktop icons are missing, too. AND I FOUND THAT the "Graphics" Section (the driver name) has been changed to "AMD Readon 680M" after the update (I think it is something like "AMD Rembrandt" before sudo apt upgrade). (I toggled in GNOME tweaks to make the window display graphics info; if I re-open it, fonts will be missing again) If I hover on the place where text should display, some texts may display but icons would not. This problem affects my life qualify, thus I need to make clear where it is the problem. GTK4? Libadwaita? Graphics? Ubuntu? Because problems does not occur on GTK3 based apps, thus I can submit this issue in Firefox. I tried to open GNOME Calendar and use journalctl to capture logs Apr 26 09:02:00 amber-XiaoXinPro-14-ARP8 gnome-calendar[4462]: gcal_range_union: assertion 'a != NULL' failed Apr 26 09:02:00 amber-XiaoXinPro-14-ARP8 gnome-calendar[4462]: gcal_range_contains_datetime: assertion 'self' failed Apr 26 09:02:00 amber-XiaoXinPro-14-ARP8 gnome-calendar[4462]: Unable to bind the same property on the same instance Apr 26 09:02:00 amber-XiaoXinPro-14-ARP8 dbus-daemon[898]: [system] Activating via systemd: service name='org.freedesktop.GeoClue2' unit='geoclue.service' requested by ':1.103' (uid=1000 pid=4462 comm="/usr/bin/gnome-calendar --gapplication-service" label="unconfined") Apr 26 09:02:00 amber-XiaoXinPro-14-ARP8 systemd[1]: Starting geoclue.service - Location Lookup Service... ** Changed in: libreoffice (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2017466 Title: LibreOffice Format | Paragraph | Proportional defaults to 6% Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: When I open a new document in Libreoffice, and try to format line spacing for a paragraph, and when I choose "Proportional," the default value to begin with is 6%. This has been the case for many years, through many fresh installs of Ubuntu and LO. It is not possible that this would be a setting on my machine alone, because it persists even on a fresh install. I do not think it is possible that I may be picking the setting up from any documents I have previously edited, because the setting persists even when I try to do a purge, reinstall, and factory reset of the app. I may be missing something, but what? I have filed this bug with the Document Foundation. They have tested it and say it is not their bug. The default value in the LO 7.5 download from their website is 100% on their machines. I have tried purging LO, installing the packages from their website, and factory-resetting my user profile (necessary because even when I did an apt-get --purge, my recent documents were still showing). The 6% figure is still showing. And so it is neither in the LO install itself, nor in the Ubuntu config files affected by apt purge. The bug report will show that I do not have LO installed. That is because I left the LO 7.5 packages installed awaiting further instructions from LO. This is a regression from libreoffice 3.5 in 12.04 (tested with 1:3.5.4-0ubuntu1) To reproduce: 1) Open the attached spreadsheet, which contains 1 cell with ~4k characters in it Expected results: Spreadsheet opens quickly (<2sec on my 2.4Ghz Core2Duo w/ SSD) Actual results: Libreoffice splash screen shows, libreoffice window is displayed as a gray rectangle with no content, and libreoffice window then becomes unresponsive. CPU usage is at 100% on one core. The system stays in this state for ~30sec. The document eventually opens and libreoffice functions normally. Saving documents with lots of data in a cell takes just as long as opening/reading those documents, with similar symptoms - libreoffice becomes unresponsive, one CPU core is at full utilization, etc. The amount of text in the cell is directly correlated to the length of time required to open/save the doc. According to this blog post... https://www.remembertheusers.com/2019/11/0580-libreoffice-nag- notices.html ...it is not responsive to configuration overrides within the user profile and the only apparent solution that doesn't require patching the source and rebuilding is to create a file containing the following markup in `$BASEDIR/share/registry` (`/usr/lib/libreoffice/share/registry` as installed by the Ubuntu package): http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema; xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance; xmlns:oor="http://openoffice.org/2001/registry;> http://openoffice.org/2004/installation; oor:name="Setup" oor:package="org.openoffice"> 0 0 Regardless of how it's achieved, I think it's tasteless, irritating, and probably doesn't give a very good image to any office customers Ubuntu may have downstream for random employees to be receiving nag banners like that in IT-installed software. On my beefy machine (i7, 8G of rams), the preview for an application takes 3/4s to show, you can't do anything meanwhile as there is no button to launch the application (because you didn't double click, just left click and thought "argh, I should have double click"). Also logging off with CIFS shares mounted in /etc/fstab, it sits with an error message: CIFS VFS: server not responding CIFS VFS: no response for cmd 50 mid this number changes And takes about 2 minutes to timeout. This also happened with Gutsy Should the timing of the mounting and dismounting be changed so that it works? It is related to the starting of network-manager and CIFS shares trying to connect on startup *before* the network is up, and dismounting the shares *after* network-manager is stopped. Developers have a tough time to find anything if you post redundant stuff. So please abstain from doing that. = Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way up to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used for the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by many desktop users. Please try to find a solution for it that works. A commonly suggested solution is: [ ] Global Menu on [ ] Global Menu off [ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only for maximized windows). - Desired change: Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. While writing in any other language i.e. any Cyrillic, it's impossible to use hotkeys, they just don't do anything. Switching to English input language enable hotkeys once again. This is very frustrating as user needs to switch language to save document, to make it bold, or italic, etc. This was not experienced in Ubuntu 13.04. Steps to reproduce: 1. System Settings Text Entry. 2. Add another keyboard layout beside English [In my case it is Bengali (Probhat)] 3. Now launch Writer. 4. Switch the keyboard layout from English (US) to Bengali (Probhat) by pressing Ctrl+Space. 5. Press Ctrl+B to change font weight to bold. Error: Font weight does not get changed. Expected: Font weight should change to bold. Note: none other system hotkeys work as expected. I.e. Ctrl+s to save, or Ctrl+b to subscript, or Ctrl+i to italic etc. Workaround: The only way is to - 1. change the keyboard layout to English 2. then press desired hotkey 3. then switch keyboard layout back to Bengali. The issue is critical, as it make writer very slow for keyboard-only typing. I suggest that the current icon be replaced with one which contains elements of all (or atleast the most popular) libreoffice tools. Yahoo Mail is probably also affected. * I think this also broke Google Contacts support in the Contacts app as provided by GOA, and may have caused problems in Thunderbird. Both Thunderbird Contacts are included in the default Ubuntu image. [TESTCASE] 1. Add a Google account, either through Evolution directly or with GNOME Online Accounts (Run gnome-control-center online-accounts) 2. Without this fix, the Google account will appear to be set up but won't actually show up in Evolution. 3. The Google account that you already added in step 1 will magically work. Note that if you tried multiple times to get Gmail in Evolution working earlier, those multiple attempts should now be working. Click EditPreferences and delete the extra duplicate Gmail accounts. [Regression Potential] Zero. This is only installing missing files to fix a high priority bug. Original bug report == In quantal, I am unable to create any gmail account in Evolution. 'iwlist wlan1 scan' would also not work; so thinking that it was a driver problem, I rebooted the system. When it came back up, nm- applet in lightdm claimed that networking was disabled, and the option to enable it was greyed out. It could also not be enabled by nmcli. I ended up stopping network-manager, bringing up the interface via /etc/network/interfaces, and logging in... at which point, restarting network-manager *did* let me enable networking from my logged-in session. So there are several problems here: - after a reboot, network-manager claimed networking was disabled. - nm-applet is not letting me enable networking from the lightdm session. - the networking was failing after a suspend/resume cycle, and could not be enabled even from inside the user session. The last issue probably *was* a kernel driver problem; but the first two issues are network-manager problems of some kind. [ Test case ] 1. Uninstall indicator-power 2. Open System Settings and click Power 3. System Settings crashes At 3 it shouldn't crash. If you have indicator-power installed, you should see the option to configure whether it shows. [ Regression potential ] This adds some new code to check if the GSettings schema is installed, since that's a reliable way to check for indicator-power's presence, and is what the code modifies. It also makes the option appear in DEs other than Unity. There's a chance that the GSettings schema-detection work could be wrong.
