Bug description:
  When moving a file or folder, which inherits its permissions from its parent
folder, with original Windows Explorer within same NTFS file system, after the
move the object always inherits its permissions from its destination parent
folder in contrast to command line move, which never changes owner and
permissions.
  IMO, Nautilus and also Nemo should behave same, if ntfs-3g "inherit" mount
option is active.

I now discovered, that webrender is disabled by default in Firefox 101
on Ubuntu. So the question is, why it is enabled by default in
Thunderbird.

From another side I got the hint, that miss-configured (web)rendering could be
the source of the problem and cause lots of time spent in error logging. See:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1959747] Re: [upstream] Very high CPU and slow responsiveness in Thunderbird 91

2022-06-05 Thread UlfZibis
I'm having similar problems in 1:91.10.0+build1-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 with
Thunderbird's CPU usage well over 25 % and for long periods and
additionally causing root process Xorg to consume 15 % CPU.

See also: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1772673

The workaround for me is:
  gfx.webrender.force-disabled = true

  [Test case]

  Install the updates, test desktop use and some basic games etc on at
  least AMD and Intel hw.

  [Where things could go wrong]

  It's possible that some apps (like games) might regress on some hw,

But I do not see this with:

Why?

I have installed version 21.2.6 by:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/display && sudo apt upgrade
since some time.
I never had noticed problems and bug 1950044 was fixed by that.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1946561] Re: tracker causes 0 bytes free in /home

Title:
  tracker causes 0 bytes free in /home

Status in tracker package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  This is what I have:
  Partition Ubuntu mounted in / : 20 GiB, 12 GiB in use
  Partition home mounted in /home : 8 GiB, 3.1 GiB in use
  Partition Data mounted in /mnt/Data : 120 GiB, 35 GiB in use

  Symlink /home/me/Documents -> /mnt/Data/Users/me/Documents

  Symlink /home/me/Music -> /mnt/Data/Users/me/Music
  Symlink /home/me/Videos-> /mnt/Data/Users/me/Videos

  /home had 4.6 GB free.
  After I copied 8 GB of *.epub files to /home/me/Documents/eBooks/, I got 0
byte free on /home after 10 minutes, caused by tracker files in
/home/user/.cache/tracker/
  gsettings set org.freedesktop.Tracker.Miner.Files low-disk-space-limit 10
  did not help.

  It seems, that tracker estimates more space than 4.6 GB because of the
  symlinks to /mnt/Data/...

  Suggestions:
  - tracker should not try to index DRM encrypted epub files and similars
  - all tracker components, not only tracker-miner*.service, should respect
low-disk-space-limit
  - tracker components should never create situations with 0 bytes free, even
if low-disk-space-limit is -1
  - tracker components anyway should estimate free space correctly (not include
space from symlinks to other file systems)

  Workaround:
  Add '*.epub' to org.freedesktop.Tracker.Miner.Files ignored-files.

Title:
  tracker causes 0 bytes free in /home

Status in tracker package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  This is what I have:
  Partition Ubuntu mounted in / : 20 GiB, 12 GiB in use
  Partition home mounted in /home : 8 GiB, 3.1 GiB in use
  Partition Data mounted in /mnt/Data : 120 GiB, 35 GiB in use
  Symlink /home/me/Download  -> /mnt/Data/Users/me/Download
  Symlink /home/me/Documents -> /mnt/Data/Users/me/Documents
  Symlink /home/me/Pictures  -> /mnt/Data/Users/me/Pictures
  Symlink /home/me/Music -> /mnt/Data/Users/me/Music
  Symlink /home/me/Videos-> /mnt/Data/Users/me/Videos

  /home had 4.6 GB free.
  After I copied 8 GB of *.epub files to /home/me/Documents/eBooks/, I got 0
byte free on /home after 10 minutes, caused by tracker files in
/home/user/.cache/tracker/
  gsettings set org.freedesktop.Tracker.Miner.Files low-disk-space-limit 10
  did not help.

  It seems, that tracker estimates more space than 4.6 GB because of the
  symlinks to /mnt/Data/...

  Suggestions:
  - tracker should not try to index DRM encrypted epub files and similars
  - all tracker components, not only tracker-miner*.service, should respect
low-disk-space-limit
  - tracker components should never create situations with 0 bytes free, even
if low-disk-space-limit is -1
  - tracker components anyway should estimate free space correctly (not include
space from symlinks to other file systems)

  Workaround:
  Add '*.epub' to org.freedesktop.Tracker.Miner.Files ignored-files.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1828638] Re: Support sane option --scan-area on GUI applications

2021-07-05 Thread UlfZibis
** Description changed:

  Several sane backends provide the option --scan-area to guarantee the
  scan is correctly aligned, even if the scan area with automatic document
  feeder (ADF) is right-aligned in contrast to the flatbed of the same
  device, which is normally left-aligned.

  Currently SimpleScan and XSane only support options -l -t -x -y, which
  leads to misalignment of some scanners when using the ADF.

  As example for this problem see:

  The UI, however, gives no indication of failure and closes the compose window
after the apparent successful submission to the smtp server.

  If the user has not configured a Sent folder this results in data loss. Even
if the user has configured a sent folder, he receives no indication that the
email has not been sent.

To avoid this, you could just try to rename to fo1, fo2, ... foa, fob, ...
until success. tmp may be already in use.

  Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

  In 1.5.0.10, renaming the folder "foo" to "foO", "fOo" or "Foo" isn't
  allowed; the OK button isn't clickable upon typing the new name.
  However, this can be worked around by renaming the folder "foo" to
  "bar" first, and then renaming "bar" to "foO".

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1886323]

2020-07-16 Thread UlfZibis
Created attachment 9163882
TB Printer Options.png

Hi, so as you ask me I will share some "insights".
First, I use Ubuntu 20.04 with the nice Unity desktop environment. Others may
show different.

Almost all views in the TB printer dialogue are perfectly localized to German
with one exception, the advanced tab shows the options in English, and only for
2 of the 3 HP printer drivers I have installed, see screen shot. Also a
different count of options is shown for the 3 drivers, and for the HP PS driver
there is an additional tab "Printer quality".
As far as I guess, the translations and options come from the
/etc/cups/ppd*.ppd files, shipped by the driver. for example, the file for the
HP PS driver has 137 kb whereas the 2 others have only 14 kb. The first
contains several translations, whereas the 2 smaller have only English items.
Don't know from where the translated items in the TB dialogue come from.
The print dialogue for TB and the PDF viewer are the same, so they seem to come
from the OS, but the printer dialogue for LibreOffice looks very different.

Hope that helps!

So I think, this bug should be stated as a "duplicate" of bug 132687
instead "worksforme".

  I contacted Enigmail’s lead dev about the issue who wrote:

  "…but even if the crash is initiated by Enigmail, the cause is

  Thunderbird."

  I tried Thunderbird 68.1.1 from Mozilla’s site, and can’t
  reproduce the problem with it.

The document should be saved as ODT (see comment 1) to see the error
(the frame around the text is lost).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1876292] Re: Error in layout from MS DOCX file, especially after saving as ODT

2020-05-03 Thread UlfZibis
The upstream bug was marked as invalid, because LibreOffice 6.0 (default in
Ubuntu 18.04) seems out of support.
A similar bug appears in LibreOffice 6.4:

Created attachment 160237
Reopend ODT with 6.4 after editing

Now I have installed LO 6.4 via PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

I now still see a difference before saving and after reopening the doc again.
The frame around the 5 lines now is completely removed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 545778] Re: xul-ext-lightning is only available in English

2019-08-09 Thread UlfZibis
When I unpack the latest XPI it only occupies 17 MB (including 12 MB for the
locales), so I'm wondering, why the Debian approach needs 24 MB.
Anyway I understand, that packaging with separate language packs is a lot of
work.
Thanks for re-packaging lightning with locales after many years of waiting. :-)

2019-08-09 Thread UlfZibis
The XPI at https://addons.thunderbird.net/thunderbird/addon/lightning/ is again
pretty old and for TB version 60.0.
The latest is also such old and for TB version 60.5, but currently we have TB
version 60.8, see:
https://addons.thunderbird.net/de/thunderbird/addon/lightning/versions/

Nobody needs *all* language packs on his system. What is the size of the
unpacked lightning with only one additional language pack?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1828638] Re: Support sane option --scan-area on GUI applications

2019-05-11 Thread UlfZibis
** Description changed:

  Several sane backends provide the option --scan-area to guarantee the
  scan is correctly aligned, even if the scan area with automatic document
  feeder (ADF) is right-aligned in contrast to the flatbed of the same

This bug is a real pain.
Browser, E-Mail and a calendar are the most important applications on a
computer system for most users, and there is no update proof way for the
localisation.
Canonical, please provide a solution soon.

The local language is German.

There are no specific steps to do, I just have to run the automatic
Ubuntu update.

I attach session.json for to see the open tabs before update. After
update, some of the tabs are lost.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1519059] Re: Error on accessing root trash

2015-11-23 Thread UlfZibis
I now have found out, that the root trash is working as expected, if
nemo/nautilus is started with "gksudo dbus-launch".
So if not started with dbus-launch, the error message after clicking "Trash"
should be changed to a hint, that the application should be started with
"gksudo dbus-launch".

Additionally in Nemo, the action "Open as root" should be fixed
accordingly.

  The files can be found in /root/.local/share/Trash/ or in case of

  IMO, if user can successfully move files to trash, there should be a
  reliable trash access to recover or finally delete files.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1476169] Re: Update Thunderbird to 38.1.0

2015-07-21 Thread UlfZibis
Since I use the same TB-profile from Windows and Ubuntu, sooner of later I
expect a broken profile, especially, because the Lightning version is also
different.
So it would be nice, if Ubuntu would not wait so long time with updating to the
current release of TB.

  As Thunderbird has a different release cycle to Firefox and there is
  some overlap between releases, we're sticking with Thunderbird 31.*
  for security updates for as long as possible. We're just about to push
  Thunderbird 31.8.0 out as a security update to all releases. This is
  the last 31.* release, and so the next security update (in a few
  weeks) will be Thunderbird 38.2.0.

  However, there is some demand from users to have Thunderbird 38.1.0
  before then, so I suggest we upload this to -proposed for all releases
  and push it out through the normal SRU process.

  Note, regardless of what happens with this, the security team will
  push Thunderbird 38.2.0 to the security pockets for all releases in a
  few weeks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 449762] Re: No sound with intel-hda without alsa force-reload

2015-04-13 Thread UlfZibis
Hi,
I experience this bug again with Ubuntu 14.10.
I need to do:
sudo alsa force-reload

To make it work permanently, I need to edit /etc/pulse/default.pa :

load-module module-alsa-source device=hw:0

  This bug is probably a duplicate of #430711 or #411574 but I'll report
  it anyways for my specific hardware.

  Since my upgrade to Karmic Beta, sound has not been working.
  Pulseaudio is convinced that there is no sound card to use and sets up
  a dummy device. After running sudo alsa force-reload (as described
  in #411574) sound works fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1337955] [NEW] No network connection after resume from hibernate

When I then suspend again to standby as workaround and then resume again the

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1336399] Re: Wrong starter copied from Dash to Unity bar

2014-07-01 Thread UlfZibis
** Description changed:

  In /usr/share/applications I have 2 starters for my application:
  NetBeans IDE 8.0 (/bin/sh /usr/local/netbeans-8.0/bin/netbeans)
  NetBeans IDE 8.0 (root) (gksudo /bin/sh
/usr/local/netbeans-8.0/bin/netbeans)
- In /home/user/.share/applications I have 1 starter for my application:
+ In /home/user/.share/applications I have 1 starter for the same application:
  netbeans_ide_8_0.desktop (/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/bin/java
. --userdir /root/.netbeans/8.0)
  In /home/user/.share/icons I have 1 icon for my application:
  netbeans_ide_8_0.png

  When I type NetBeans into Dash, I see all 3. When I choose the 2nd one, my
application starts fine.
  I now klick Remain in Starter on the icon in the Unity bar and close the
application.
  When after I try to start my application from this icon, I get the attached
error message, the same, as if I would use the 3rd from the Dash.

  Notwithstanding, the 3rd starter is broken, probably left over from an
  incomplete installation, the correct starter should be copied to the
  Unity bar.

  P.S.: Please excuse, that I was not able to find the correct project for
  this bug report!!!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1327569] [NEW] Can not rename files in archive

Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 14.04 file-roller shows files with German Umlaute with bad characters

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1318669] [NEW] On move use same heuristics as Windows Explorer if NTFS inherit option is set

2014-05-12 Thread UlfZibis

When moving a file or folder, which inherits its permissions from its parent
folder, with original Windows Explorer within same NTFS file system, after the

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 214366]

2014-02-09 Thread UlfZibis
(In reply to Josiah Bruner [:JosiahOne] from comment #111)
 No. The idea here is very similar to the common priming read concept
 taught in introductory CS courses.
In advanced CS practice I learned: No code duplicates, because if there comes a
change along, one of the duplicates could be overseen.

 Following such a pattern the code here should be:
If there is no other pattern with higher priority ;-)

 newFolderName.Assign(folderName);
 bool containsChild = true; // no need to preset it to true
 int counter = 2;// yes, better than starting with 1 as before

2014-02-09 Thread UlfZibis
(In reply to n...@parkwaycc.co.uk from comment #107)

Hi, why not using for statements:

 +newFolderName.Assign(folderName);
 +bool containsChild = true;
 +for (uint32_t i=2; ; i++) {
 +  rv = ContainsChildNamed(newFolderName, containsChild);
 +  NS_ENSURE_SUCCESS(rv, rv);
 +  if (!containsChild)
 +break;
 + // This could be localizable but Toolkit is fine without it, see
 +  // mozilla/toolkit/content/contentAreaUtils.js::uniqueFile()
 +  newFolderName.Assign(folderName);
 +  newFolderName.AppendLiteral(();
 +  newFolderName.AppendInt(i);
 +  newFolderName.AppendLiteral());
 +}

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 214366]

2014-02-09 Thread UlfZibis
Little sophisticated:

+newFolderName.Assign(folderName);
+for (uint32_t i=2, containsChild; ; i++) {
+  rv = ContainsChildNamed(newFolderName, containsChild);
+  NS_ENSURE_SUCCESS(rv, rv);

+  newFolderName.Assign(folderName);
+  newFolderName.AppendLiteral(();
+  newFolderName.AppendInt(i);
+  newFolderName.AppendLiteral());
+}

Or really type clean:
+for (uint32_t i=2; ; i++) {
+  bool containsChild;
+  rv = ContainsChildNamed(newFolderName, containsChild);
...

I'm not sure, if newFolderName and rv also could be drawn into the loop,
are they used outside?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 214366]

2014-02-09 Thread UlfZibis
IMHO:
1. while(condition) is only appropriate, if the condition is determined outside
the loop.
2. define variables only in the scope, where they are used.
3. for(...) is appropriate if there is a counting variable, which is only used
inside the loop
4. If you look closer, in your code snippet you could fairly use while(true)
and define containsChild inside the loop.

2014-02-06 Thread UlfZibis
(In reply to :aceman from comment #99)
 Josiah does not propose to differ. The last patch does rename to (x).
Great!

 I think user should never move to Trash as temporary measure.
Well, You'll never know, what user does, ...and there is the other reason
mentioned above. Additionally it looks more clean to me, if the user is warned
upon normal Move/Copy action.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 214366]

2014-02-06 Thread UlfZibis
(In reply to Josiah Bruner [:JosiahOne] from comment #82)
 So this seems like a fine approach to me. I think that we should call each
 folder folder(x) instead of folder-x, as it more clearly indicates
 duplicates though. People may already have folders called Name-Subname or
 the like, so another reason to use parenthesis.
+1
The (x) pattern is well known from file managers, so why differ here?
There is already another mechanism using the -x pattern e.g. in case of lost
synchronisation via IMAP where panacea.dat resolves the redirection. Using the
same pattern for different reasons could raise ambiguity problems.

 I also definitely think we should expand this to other folders, not just
 trash.
(In reply to :aceman from comment #84)
 But I think I could make that dialog with Yes/Cancel options meaning
 Rename/Cancel. For Trash, the rename would happen without question.
(In reply to Josiah Bruner [:JosiahOne] from comment #85)
 Yeah, for trash moving automatically is fine.
I think, the decision if a dialogue is shown should not be upon destination
folder Trash, but upon the involved action:
Delete action - automatically rename to Folder(x)
Move/Copy action - ask user for renaming or cancel
Reasons:
- If user uses Move/Copy instead of the easier Delete he may have some special
reason e.g. using the Trash as temporary location, so user should be warned as
for any other Move/Copy.
- If we later extend with merge functionality, user is guaranteed to have the
merge functionality even for Trash when using the Move/Copy actions.

 I wouldn't try to implement merging in this bug (it is much harder).

What's the problem, moving a (bunch of) message(s) to another folder is
already implemented and the suggested dialogue is well known from file
managers. I just mean adding, not merging with existing messages.

I'm not sure, what you think is incomplete here?
Yes, gedit adds an additional newline, even if user doesn't want it, so this is
a bug.
In case of file grubenv, it corrupts the file from being usable, as it should
not have a newline at the end.

2012-12-06 Thread UlfZibis
 I guess the fix for your problem was available since a while.
 But if you had installed it, you had gotten the bug that was fixed here.
I do not get what you mean by that?
Can you send me a german translation privately?

Have a sunny day,

Ulf

Bug description:

  Impact:

    Currently Brasero will fail to write files to a disc in on-the-fly
    mode using the libburnia plugin resulting in 'coastered' media.
    This is the default mode of operation and unless the user is writing
    a pre-built ISO image, this fails 100% of the time and has since Oneiric
    -- possibly Natty.

  Fix:

    Complete/fix part of the following commit:

http://git.gnome.org/browse/brasero/commit/?id=1b8397ee252df2d554682ca2d694d5937fbf6e39

    Particularly the change to plugins/libburnia/burn-libisofs.c around line
    200 that hoisted the priv-libburn_src-read_xt() call out of the if()
statement
    should have actually removed it instead of duplicating it.

  Patch:

http://git.gnome.org/browse/brasero/commit/?id=253031b69c5dcbcf079c445ec530afb7ccd9ea82

  Test Case:

    * Insert blank CD or DVD in drive:

  (1) Attempt to write files to the writable optical disc by dragging
  files from Nautilus to a blank disc.

  (2) Click on the 'Write Files to Disc' button in nautilus.

  (3) Make sure 'on the fly' mode is enabled by selecting 'Burn image
  directly without saving to disc' (which should be the default).

  (4) Click on the 'burn' button.

    * If the bug is fixed, you should have a properly written and readable
    disc. Otherwise, the procedure will fail and the disc will be unusable.

  Binary package hint: brasero

  When I burn a DVD (4,7 and 8,5 GB) Brasero show the progressbar till
  about 30-40% (exact point is randomly) and than says, that it is
  finalizing the media. This finalizing messages is showing for the rest
  of the burning process (~10min @8x 8,5GB). After that, it ejects the
  media without any error. But when I insert the media again, nothing
  happens, except, that the DVD-Drive disappears from the computer:///
  location in nautilus.

  This problem only exists when burning On-The-Fly. Burning ISO Images
  or automatic creation of ISO Images before burning works without
  problems. The burning speed doesn't matter to this problem. I test 8x,
  4x and 2x. All the same problem. On-The-Fly burning using K3B works
  quite well @8x speed.

  One thing I also notice is, that Brasero uses 100% CPU on one core,
  while K3B uses just about 5-15%.

  I attached the last Brasero log. I don't know, why it just says, that
  it was only at 49% and then says it's finished. The burning took about
  28 minutes. The media was unusable on all my three devices
  (Linux/Windows).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-12-05 Thread UlfZibis
Hi,
today I see this new automatic update on my Ubuntu 12.04 x64 and was curiour
reading the bug report because of a similar problem.
I'm not sure, if my problem, some few days ago , has to do with the same cause.
It was the first time I ever used my Ubuntu to burn a DVD, so all settings
should have been default.
Description:
As source I used the downloaded ISO of PartedMagic from 2012_11_30.
I simply opened this with Brasero to start burning on a DVD-RW, which first had
to be erased.
After some time I saw 100% complete and something like finalizing the media
and I continuously recognized mechanical movements from the readers head.
As after 5..10 min. nothing changed, I clicked Abort.
Then shortly I saw something with successful, but I was unsure, if it was
caused by my click or if it had happened anyway.

After, the disk was unreadable, even from Windows 7.
But I anyway tried to boot from it to start PartedMagic, but it didn't work.

Please think about, if this covers the same bug or if it is a different
problem.

The downloaded ISO should have been OK, as I could burn successfully
with Windows 7 right after.

I'm wondering why Brasero doesn't have a After burning check the content
option.
This would help to avoid unexpected data loss.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-12-05 Thread UlfZibis
Please sorry about my error:
I was using a CD-RW, not DVD-RW, 650 MB, 4x
I'm not sure, if -format would concern here?

And of coarse on Windows 7 I used the same media and the same burner.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-12-05 Thread UlfZibis
Now I tried again with just updated 3.4.1-0ubuntu1.1:
Burning took ~ 10 min. at 4x -- successful
And yes, after, a checksum test was executed automatically.
(So sorry about the noise, because I didn't find a hook to enable it. Anyway it
would be nice to have a choice for full compare)
I could boot PartedMagic successfully.
Thanks for your detailed explanations!

  Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode]

Bug description:
  SRU Justification
  ~
