[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1796475] [NEW] Nautilus lists files in a directory without proper permissions

2018-10-06 Thread johnmne
Public bug reported:

I have a directory inside '/tmp' which is owned by root:root (user root and
group root).
Directory's permissions are 0700 (means that only the user, root, has full
permissions).

The directory '/tmp' has permissions 'drwxrwxrwt' and is owned by
root:root.

I created a directory '/tmp/OO' with permissions 'drwx--' which is owned by
root:root.
Inside the directory '/tmp/OO' there are two files:
$ sudo ls -la /tmp/OO
total 16
drwx-- 2 root root 80 Oct 6 13:39 .
drwxrwxrwt 17 root root 400 Oct 6 13:54 ..
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 8503 Oct 6 13:16 FILE.ods
-rwxrw-r-- 1 root root 64 Oct 6 13:20 run.sh

I open Nautilus in '/tmp' and click on the arrow (of Tree View) for
'/tmp/OO' and successfully manages to see the file 'run.sh' inside (but
cannot see the file 'FILE.ods').

I expected that I won't be able to see *any* file, since that the
eXecute permission of the directory '/tmp/OO' is absent for Other.

Ubuntu release 16.04.
Nautilus package version 1:3.18.4.is.3.14.3-0ubuntu6.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1669562] [NEW] An action on a single partition shows other partitions as unformatted space

2017-03-02 Thread johnmne
Public bug reported:

When performing an action on a single partition, such as removing the
"bootable" flag, makes other partitions to be shown as "unformatted
space".

The partitions format of the HDD is Master Boot Record.
The action of removing the "bootable" flag was performed on a single "ext4"
partition.
The other partitions that were shown as "unallocated space" were on an
"Extended Partition".

After reboot - the partitions were displayed normally (the output of the
partition was valid on the Disks app).

Using:
* Ubuntu 16.04.
* gnome-disk-utility 3.18.3.1
* UDisks 2.1.7 (built against 2.1.6)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1668361] Re: Quieter PC with automatic Sleep State command to all HDDs

2017-02-27 Thread johnmne
** Description changed:

  * This is NOT a bug, but a feature request. *

It is known that mechanical HDDs produce a lot of noise.
I have several HDDs and mostly I use only one of them at every single moment.

The problem is that ALL HDDs are working automatically when the PC starts.
(I can hear them working even if the SATA port is disabled by the
motherboard.)
This not only wears down the HDDs, but also produces a lot of noise which
shouldn't happen because that most of them aren't being used.

It would be very helpful if Ubuntu would send a "Sleep State" command to all
mechanical HDDs upon startup.
(Sending that command to SSDs isn't required.)
+
+ ---
+
+ In addition, nautilus itself could verify upon each "unmount" action whether
all HHDs are being used.
+ If there are HDDs which aren't being used (doesn't contain mounted
partitions) - then nautilus could send a Sleep State to those mechanical HDDs.
+
+ By "unmount action", I mean to the unmounting that happens when clicking
+ on the "up" arrow in the GUI of Nautilus where all available partitions
+ are presented.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1661640] Re: upon login, shows corrupt graphics buffer until unity done loading

2017-02-03 Thread johnmne
I've read that odd-numbered versions of Ubuntu (like 'Ubuntu 15.10' which you
use) aren't recommended for common users.
It was advised to use an even-numbered versions, like Ubuntu 16.04.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1651425] [NEW] Adjust area of screenshot

2016-12-20 Thread johnmne

** This is a feature request. **

Please enable to adjust the area of screenshot after that it was chosen.

For example when I take a screenshot using keyboard shortcut: "CTRL" + "SHIFT"

coordinates/area for the screenshot.
But sometimes I wish to further adjust the area of the screenshot.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1646794] [NEW] Allow to set default auto-detect for encoding

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1646790] [NEW] Allow to set the view encoding via menu

2016-12-02 Thread johnmne
Public bug reported:

This is a feature request (not a bug).

'gedit' allows to view a text file with a different encoding only when
you click on the 'open' button via the GUI.

But sometimes you drag a file to an already open 'gedit' instance and
wish to change the encoding easily. This is not possible...

Therefore please allow to change the encoding easily:
For example, add an option to choose the encoding under the 'View' menu.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1632270] [NEW] Clicking on Save button doesn't quit gedit

2016-10-11 Thread johnmne
Public bug reported:

When you edit a text file using 'gedit' and tries to quit the program using the
X button, a dialog appears asking:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1630529] [NEW] Keeps asking "Do you want to continue with full Windows compatibility disabled?"

2016-10-05 Thread johnmne
Public bug reported:

I tried to burn many files that some of them weren't fully compatible
with Windows.

When tried to burn, Brasero kept asking:
"Do you want to continue with full Windows compatibility disabled?"

I clicked "Continue" but it prompts again.
The cycle repeats indefinitely.

When I click "Cancel", I realize that the DVD is already written with
approximately 2KiB of data.
Thus the DVD is unusable...

** Affects: brasero (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1322925] Re: Copy, cut, and paste in Nautilus fail in certain circumstances

2016-09-29 Thread johnmne
Just now this bug appeared on Ubuntu 16.04.
Probably due to an update..

Info (output trimmed):

$ dpkg-query -s nautilus
Version: 1:3.18.4.is.3.14.3-0ubuntu5

Bug description:
  The title says it.

Since upgrade to 14.04, copy / cut / paste of files among various
folders I have write rights on does not work most of the times.

Using the terminal to copy / move does work normally.

  nautilus:
Installed: 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu9.1
Candidate: 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu9.1
Version table:
   *** 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu9.1 0
  500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty-updates/main i386
Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
   1:3.10.1-0ubuntu8 0
  500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/main i386 Packages

  [Test Case]

  1. Open a Nautilus window and switch to List view
  2. Go to location with write permission
  3. Select a file and try to rename.
  4. When prompted to rename (filename becomes a text entry), open new tab.
  5. Select a file, try to copy and paste. You will see that file is not copied
and pasted.
  6. Go back to original tab. If the file that was selected in step 3 is still
selected, unselect it.
  7. Try to copy and paste. It should work.
  8. Try to rename again, and open new tab.
  9. Close old tab, and try to copy and paste. It won't work, and there is no
way to restore, except opening a new window.

  [Regression Potential]

  Already fixed upstream with

https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/commit/?id=8032628adc9c8286050716d609c574dc7273dfcb

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1628922] [NEW] Postpone login attempts if X have failed

2016-09-29 Thread johnmne
Public bug reported:

** This is a feature request that regards to security. **

Please add to the login method a mechanism that postpones successive
login attempts if X attempts failed.

Obviously this can be further enhanced - for example:
If X successive login attempts failed, then disable that specific login method
for that specific user for Y minutes.
If Y minutes have passed and the additional successive attempts failed again -
then disable that specific login method for that specific user for 2*Y minutes.
And so on...

Values of X and Y should be configured by the 'root' user.

Benefits: greatly reduces the risk of brute-forcing the password.
Scenarios that this can defend from:
 * If someone hacked a user in the system, then this prevents him to brute
force the password for root.
 * A keyboard can be emulated via a physical connection while it tries to brute
force the password.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1617620] Re: Autorun files from Removable Media

2016-09-11 Thread johnmne
In addition to the fix suggestion that I wrote in my first post, please
also have the checkbox of "Never prompt or start programs on media
insertion" as checked (this should be the default).

Bug description:
Ubuntu 16 is still automatically executing software that resides in an
external resource (removable media), such as USB or CD.

I don't need to tell you how bad this is..

  ---

You can see the default value that allows to autoplay / autorun files
  by doing the following steps:

  1. In Ubuntu 16.04, go to Settings -> Details.
  2. In the left pane choose "Removable Media".
  3. On the right pane you'll see "Software", while the value in the drop-down
menu is "Run Software".

  ---

  A fix suggestion:
Instead of "Run Software", the default value should be "Do nothing".

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1617620] Re: Autorun files from Removable Media

2016-09-04 Thread johnmne
@Seth Arnold:

Yes, unfortunately that is the default value.
(I installed a fresh version of Ubuntu 16 that was downloaded directly from the
website. Also I verified the checksum and it was valid.)
