Obsolete, but not really obsoleted by anything usable *yet*.

> staging => what are these? Obsolete too?

This is where we are staging changes to be used in v8.2.1.

You are referring to the v8.2.1 candidate release? This is not
obsolete, it is being pushed to various deployments.

> And another thing: olpc-update is not to be used anymore,
> or is it still on?

It is still on for v8.2. It's future is perhaps a bit uncertain (maybe
once we have working pure-Fedora builds it won't be active for a
while, but it possibly will be resuscitated or replaced in future).

I think the real question is: who are you developing for?

v8.2 is pretty frozen and slow moving - the upcoming 8.2.1 includes
only a handful of fixes (plus a couple of features for much improved
deployability, that do not really affect the user experience). It will
be adopted by deployments over the next few months, and will continue
to be rolled out for probably a long time (e.g. Uruguay still using
build 656 even though development terminated a long time ago).
There may be an 8.2.2 with a similar collection of small fixes,
depending on demand from deployments.

If you want to develop for these deployments on this timeline, then
you should work on top of 8.2 (sugar-0.82) and limit yourself to
activity-level changes only.

As for the future, the hope is that we will have a
similarly-functional OS that includes the latest version of sugar
asap. OLPC is working with Fedora on this, and while I suspect that
the end result will be pushed as a "reference OS" by OLPC, there are
also some other efforts which I think OLPC would probably be happy to
flash onto machines at the factory (I can't speak officially, I am
only a volunteer right now), including debXO, and a possibility of the
community taking the 8.2 OS release and adding sugar-0.84 and some
other things as an intermediate step before the pure-Fedora builds are
suitable replacements. However, I personally think that all of these
efforts are 6-12 months away (at least) from producing something
adoptable by deployments.

If you want to develop for the-future-with-unknown-timeframe, then you
should work upstream at sugarlabs for sugar-0.84.

joyride, staging builds, sugar releases

2009-02-12 Thread victor
Sorry to insist on this, but I have not got it quite yet.

Joyrides => obsolete (even though the builder script keeps
churning them out and telling the olpc devel list).

staging => what are these? Obsolete too?

release builds => only last week there was a release build
announced on the olpc devel list. Are these obsolete too?

And another thing: olpc-update is not to be used anymore,
or is it still on?

Any clarification greatly appreciated!

As Daniel said, I think a better plan is to start using livecd-tools as
our build system. I tried making what would be the first "joyride" F11
build in this thread:

https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-olpc-list/2009-January/msg00081.html

But I'm stuck with /dev/root not being created for an odd reason, could
use some Fedora initrd knowledge.

Once we have something that boots, I'd be happy to set up nightly
automated builds using livecd-tools.

Thanks!

- Chris.

I believe that we want to build things using Fedora's tools -- we
actually would like Fedora to build the releases in future. So, this
means that pilgrim goes away, or that pilgrim gets adopted by Fedora
(the former, I guess!).

Some work may be needed on Fedora's build tools, but I was extremely
pleased to hear that Sugar-on-a-stick is being built with standard
Fedora tools, and we now have a (nearly?-)functional Soas XO image.

Details like security, signing and updates remain to be figured out, I
believe. For now, having a partially bootable image based on rawhide
will be a great start.

It would be best to use your time with OLPC-F11 preparation - I don't
see the current joyride going anywhere.

Moving joyride to rawhide

2009-01-28 Thread Peter Robinson
Hi All,

With the plans of releasing what is/was going to be 9.1.0 as based on
Fedora 11 (rather than the original plans of Fedora 10) what is the
plans on moving the joyride daily builds to pull in rawhide rather
than Fedora 10? Is the plan for the 9.1.0 release (is it still going
to be called that?) to be built from the existing OLPC build system
(pilgrim?) or is there plans to move it to the Fedora system? If there
are plans to move to the Fedora build system will it be able to sign
the releases etc, or is this planned for sometime later? The reason I
ask these questions is because its probably better to make the move
sooner rather than later so people don't waste time testing and fixing
things on Fedora 10 where it would be better to use the time with
Fedora 11 so larger changes like python 2.6 etc can be tested.

Sorry for the ramble.

probably #4680, dsd's work to resolve this bug, from about four weeks
ago. Every multitask Python program is polling 10x/sec -- at idle --
until you include these changes. The early patches to PygObject and PyGTK
which made it into fedora were incorrect and didn't fix the bug.

Re: New joyride build 2613 from build 762

2009-01-04 Thread Ixo X oxI
FYI,
Just an hour ago (Jan 4th 2008), I upgraded one of my XOs to the latest
Joyride.

FROM: build-762
  TO: joyride 2613

METHOD:
 (as root) $ olpc-udate joyride-2613

NOTES:

1) During bootup, lots of messages from JFFS2.
(Errors show also under 762, so probably a bigger issue with some hard
links)

2) During bootup, xauth complains several times, and creates new
(/usr/tmp/olpc-auth/.Xauthority ?) files.
(about 4 to 5 times)

3) Some missing lib files, etc. warning messages only.
(Does not happen under 762)

4) After 1st reboot after upgrade, created a bunch of new groups in
/etc/group.
(My guess, one for every Activity present)

5) Unable to connect to both WEP and WPA access point.
(prompts, re-entry of password, but no connection... works fine under
762)

6) Home view, icons are re-arranged from 762 'favorites' view, possible
icons missing too.
   (people will notice this! :)

7) Correctly prompted 'Do you want to check for software updates?'.
(However, access point connects didn't work so it failed. :)

I alt-gamepad (o) and went back to 762. Still working fine.

If anyone wants me to TRAC any of these issues, let me know, would be glad
to.
(Errr.. :) 'all' is not an answer.. I don't have that much time available)

I can also send more specific details, if one is interested...

-Ixo

0.84 will only be released in early March:

0.83.x is a series of "unstable" or developer builds leading up to the

Abiword no longer depends on perl. Its primarily cups and the libgnome
deps that pull it in. libgnome is pulled in by xulrunner.

My understanding is that Joyride builds are kicked off automatically when
there is something new to build. A new version of Perl was posted to the
Fedora repositories, so Joyride picked it up. This doesn't mean that perl
will stick around. Please correct me if I misstated something.

Basically I think these just need to be untagged in koji. I can look
at doing these in a couple of days when I get a proper internet
connection back.

I can comment on a couple of these, but I'm not sure how to fix them:

* pyabiword is newer in olpc3 than fc10, but the spec files are
basically the same - the olpc3 one seems to have had a no-change
rebuild which bumped the version number higher than the fc10 version.
There's no olpc4 version as we do not need to fork from the F-10
version - so we should get the fc10 version into joyride.

* python-telepathy has the same version 0.15.3-1 in fc10 and olpc3. We
should also be using the fc10 version here as we have rebased on F-10
and olpc3 was built on F-9. There's no need for an olpc4 fork of the
package as we are using the same version as Fedora.

* sugar-journal is no longer a separate package in Sugar 0.83, so
there should not be a sugar-journal included in Joyride at all. The
sugar package includes the journal functionality now.

Good to see this up-leveled -- the previous version of this package
as distributed in Joyride was more than a month old.

However, that still leaves several packages which appear to be more
recent in 'olpc3' than in 'olpc4'. Output of 'yum check-update' :

| pyabiword.i386 0.6.1-4.olpc3

Hi Mikus,

Can you re-test with 2586 and then 2587? 2587 brought in a
kernel configuration change (CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND) and
I'm wondering if it is the root cause. You can just update
the kernels if you feel comfortable updating kernel RPMS
as per http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Kernel#Installing_OLPC_kernel_RPMs.

Hey.. No fair. :)

I guess I'll leave on 'e' until we are done with 8.2.1 to maximize

- olpc-update joyride-2592, successful,

- reboot, successful, reflashed firmware,

- reboot, successful, Sugar UI appears, offer to update activities,
  declined,

- suspend and resume using power button short press, successful,

- suspend and resume using lid switch, successful,

- battery status and charge state shown by frame, successful,

- image rotation button, successful,

- Terminal-18 activity works, /boot/olpc_build says "joyride 2592",

- F1 view shows nearby access point, clicking makes the access point
icon showed as connected, "ping google.com" works in Terminal,

- the following activities start fine and appear to work; Calculate,
Maze, Implode, Memorize, Write, Pippy, Measure,

- Scratch started fine, and can quit, did not check other functions,

- Journal appears fine, entering text in Write, closing the activity,
rebooting, and then selecting the item from the Journal results in the
Write activity starting with the text as entered.

Triviality of the day ... 2592 is the TCP port number of Netrek.

Joyride SD card corruption

2008-12-12 Thread Mikus Grinbergs
WARNING -- since about build 2590 I can get my "permanent" SD card
(ext2 filesystem) completely corrupted - I've had to restore it
twice. [This is a regression - with 2583 and earlier I never saw
any SD corruption. Note that my systems have multiple USB devices.]

I am unaware of the cause. Everything seems fine - I type in
'shutdown -r now' - the XO shuts down and restarts - but hangs
before showing any of the OFW output lines. [Looking afterwards
from a running system at the SD card, the ext2 filesystem on it is
thoroughly hosed (e.g., 'ls' shows questionmarks; 'fsck' lists
zillions of deleted inodes, plus incorrect refcounts, etc.).]

Cups is being pulled in by libgnome which is due to xulrunner, but
with the talk of printing it will no doubt be needed eventually.
libraw I suspect is due to gstreamer, I'll have a look at that later,
i have gstreamer on my list to file bugs to get it broken down into
some sub packages for deps.

Working with dsd and bert I changed Activities
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activities/G1G1/8.2 to transclude
Activities/Record_(8.2) instead of Activities/Record-G1G1. That allowed
them to update the latter as dsd says. They requested I also made the
change for several other activities that have forked from 8.2: Browse,
Chat, Etoys, Read.

I think the http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activities/Peru page needs the
same fix -- it should not be loading "Browse (latest)".

I don't understand why all activities on the 8.2 page aren't set this
way. They should not pull in the latest version, they should pull in
the (8.2) version. But a lot of the (8.2) fragments are out of date,
they don't list the latest version that works on 8.2.0.

Also, I'm not sure what the point of the -G1G1 files are. Currently,
Activities/G1G1 transcludes Activities/Record-G1G1 , which redirects to
Activities/Record_(latest). But there is no "G1G1" version of any
activity, there are simply pages for each activity group that pull in
either the version that works in 8.2 or the latest version. Why mention
"-G1G1"?

Rather than explain it here, it should be somewhere on the wiki,
referred to by http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Software_updater

I also rewrote the explanation in
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activities/G1G1/8.2 , statements like "They
are part of the G1G1 activity pack are simply incorrect.
(Is there a new [[G1G1 activity pack]]?)

Cheers,

rainbow preloading disabled in joyride (temporarily?)

2008-12-08 Thread Daniel Drake
Hi,

rainbow's python module preloading causes a lot of activity breakage
in joyride (any activity based on gstreamer such as Record, Chat,
etc). Some reasons are detailed here:
http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/9035

I just released rainbow-0.7.27 which turns off preloading. It will be
in the next joyride. Having activities that start a bit slower than
usual is better than having activities that do not start at all. This
doesn't mean that preloading is turned off forever (although some of
us would like that), but it is certainly disabled until someone comes
up with a solution for the above bug at the very least.
