Although you may feel like the entire website needs significant rework
at the moment to balance out both use and business needs, as a first
step I would suggest is making a small change. Develop metrics on how
you will determine if the change was successful for both users and the
business. In this
Hi,
I think you intuition on this is totally spot on. If you want to try
to convince your clients to go with the soothing solution, I
would recommend putting two mockups in front of a few people. One
scary one and one not, and get their reactions to it on video. Then
show the video to your
Hi Mark,
I completely understand where you are coming from. I too have a
technical background and a Masters in HCI.
The way that I was able to get into the field is by taking a
cross-functional job. My first job was officially called
Usability/Front-End Developer, where I did my share of

I personally feel really uncomfortable making any kind of design
decisions without a minimal effort at research, to me it just feels
like guessing. When I am not given enough time, I do much of what has
already been listed:
-competitive analysis
-get marketing data (better than nothing)
-talk to
I personally also hate extremely large conferences (even though I
can't afford to go to many during the year), because its so
difficult to meet new people and really get to know others. I was
thinking that perhaps we might consider taking a cue from ACM, which

Thanks for the correction Ian! Silverback is a screen *capture*
application.
If you are doing remote testing and have a Mac you can use iChat for
screen *sharing*. Other (pricey) screen sharing software include

Hi Nina,
I would recommend that you actually try a mixed approach to get as

Erin - that is a very interesting finding because I would have thought
that the map view would have been better as well. Real estate = maps,
makes sense to me!! :)
The reason I asked my questions is because I am designing a
comparison site and was wondering if it might be better to present
I was wondering if anyone has seen any unique or interesting search result
interfaces that break away from the linear model of listing results. The
only thing I have seen recently is: http://searchme.com
Also, in your opinion how usable and/or effective is the list model in
communicating search
Thanks everyone!
I think I am going to suggest that my director of product describe
our users in terms of different levels of literacy as well as perhaps
create a few cool descriptions like Catriona mentioned to help us talk
about them in short hand.
I also agree that I am need to build empathy
Hi Everyone --
I am having a bit of a terminology problem within my company. Most of the
product people and developers like to refer to our users as
unsophisticated (a euphemism for dumb). My understanding of the majority
of our users is that they are generally of a lower socio-economic level and
Hi Josh --
Thanks for sharing the video, I also found it to be really
interesting.
From a future interaction point of view, I find this concept very
short sighted. Not only is does the concept not demonstrate more
social interaction (as you have mentioned), but the interaction is
still focused
