[IxDA Discuss] Survey design

2009-11-17 Thread Catriona Lohan-Conway
I'm in the process of designing a survey for existing users of
consumer food site but don't have a lot of time to design it. Most
likely I will use survey monkey unless anyone has a better suggestion.

Can anyone point me to best practices for quick online survey design?

Many thanks

[IxDA Discuss] Best practices for Country location and languages on Global Websites (was Language Picker)

2009-06-10 Thread Catriona Lohan-conway
Jason,

Did you read my mind I was just about to send out a similar post.

My line of thought was about best practices on how users select countries and
languages on global websites.

A few questions...
Should sites auto detect IP addresses and serve default settings according to
country, language?
Should users have ability to chose their preferred country and language
preferences off a splash page as in Ikea.com on a first visit (and/or
subsequent visits) and have the ability to change at will?

Thanks

[IxDA Discuss] How is your non-profit using Twitter to advance the mission, vision and values of your organization?

Posting for a friend... Please contact Jared directly

How is your non-profit using Twitter to advance the mission, vision
and values of your organization?

I've been asked to write a 700 word article for the Association of
Fundraising Professionals on this topic and your answers may well end
up as quotes in it going out to 30,000+ readers next week.

I'd also be interested to hear reasons why your leadership decided NOT
to use Web 2.0 - and twitter specifically. If you wish to remain
anonymous I'll protect your privacy and the name of your org as well.
You can reply privately to this question if you prefer.

Many thanks!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] The UX Challenge organizers might be insane

2009-02-11 Thread Catriona Lohan-Conway
One of my heroes is fellow Irishman Ernest Shackleton... His
Antarctic expedition back in 1901-04 is legendary and made me go
there. However I went on a commercial expedition ship but want to
return to do Shackleton's trip and with an altruistic purpose.

When I did some work for Burberry a couple of years ago and reading
their history I discovered they actually sponsored the expedition
gear for the trip... if you don't know the story check it out here,
his books or the PBS movie with Kenneth Brannagh.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Shackleton

There will be plenty of people interested in sponsoring this and I
personally want to do it and would like to do it for a cause. My
favorite is MS society and I think I could get some corporations to
sponsor me.

Take a look at all the extreme sport expeditions that come out of UK
esp. The Volvo Round the World, The Vendée Globe etc and the money is
there - human interest trumps recession too as people become engaged
and following explodes.

You kidding me? Can you imagine the prestige of sponsoring the

sponsoring the first balloon or boat to make it around the world.
Or the first spaceship to the moon or Mars. This is extreme in so
many ways it's not even funny.

Now, do you want to be the one who gets the credit for helping my
team winning this or not? Because someone is going to get that
opportunity. I'm giving you the opportunity to be that sponsor.

All in how you pitch it.

Ali:

Like I said to you earlier offline, you seem to like the 2nd option
better. On the surface, I think it's got a better career path but
Brian makes a good point about resources and size of the company (and
ability to stay solvent in this economy). You could level with the
company u are leaning toward most and tell them you have another
offer and discuss you career goals and ask them how you can work
together to be mutually beneficial.

I agree with Brian on plotting your moves. People have told me I seem
to calculate my moves in two's - I didn't do it consciously - but on
reflection I see it and it makes sense. Think about what you are
bringing to the company and how might you leave in 2 or so years.
What is the likely exchange of experience.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Studies on aversion to ATMs for making deposits?

2008-06-26 Thread Catriona Lohan-Conway

from my personal study...

I had an issue recently where I deposited a Citibank check to a BoA a/
c via ATM.

The check was from my roommate who's been giving me checks for months.
The check showed in my account as pending and took 10 days to clear.
I eventually got a letter saying that the reason the check had a
pending status was that they believed it was a 3rd party check.
I thought that was BS and I was upset about it and when I questioned
the bank they told me not to use the ATM for check deposit as if it
took time to clear and caused any fees they would not refund them as
it was my own fault not to use bank tellers!

Doesn't this defeat one of the main purposes for ATMs... out of hours
banking?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] unsophisticated users

2008-06-03 Thread Catriona Lohan-Conway

this is an interesting option - depends on the context ;-)

http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1418715

There are many different types of computer users out there; here is a
list of the better known ones and descriptions on each.

Joe Sixpack - Owns a computer, but doesn't use it very often. Has
absolutely no idea how a computer works, and will call tech support
for the slightest abnormality. Generally annoys more knowledgable
users with questions that are answered plainly in the documentation.
Tech support receives calls from these users most often. Has an email
address, but checks it so seldomly you might as well call them on the
phone. Most Joe Sixpacks refuse to learn anything about their
computer because they are afraid of becoming geeks.

Compulsive Gamer - The compulsive gamer's only use for a computer is
to play games. All the time. They tend to be more knowledgable about
computers than Joe Sixpacks, but this is only because they spend so
much time using them. Depending on the type of game that Compulsive
Gamers play, they may be thoroughly obsessed with having the latest
and greatest hardware at all times, so they may also classify as a...

Hardware Addict - Spends 80% of their income upgrading their computer
hardware whenever any part is released that is more than 1% faster
than the part they currently own. Hardware Addicts are almost always
Compulsive Gamers, because games benefit the most from these constant
upgrades. Many hardware addicts own over a half-dozen computers that
they build from the parts they replace. Hardware Addicts are not
always financially well-off; these HA's will whine endlessly about
how they can't afford the latest new toy. Some Hardware Addicts take
things too far, and evolve (devolve?) into...

Computer Riceboys - Computer Riceboys have much in common with
regular ricers; the primary difference is they rice out computers
instead of cars. Their favorite past times are buying expensive cases
and modifying them to include windows, neon lights, stickers, an
excessive number of cooling fans, and sometimes even switches to turn
these fans on or off on the fly. They are usually hardware addicts,
but not always. Some Computer Riceboys will make their 486DX2/66 look
like something that belongs in a Sci-Fi movie, despite it being
slower than molasses.

OS Nazi - These individuals feel their operating system is the only
one that should be allowed to exist, and that all others should be
abolished. OS Nazis will rag on everyone that doesn't run their OS of
choice, as well as try to convert those who do run their OS of choice
into a fellow OS Nazi. Any criticism of their favorite OS usually
results in a baseless argument, and/or personal insults and shunning.

Media Pirate - If you removed all the abilities of a media pirate's
computer except downloading and playing audio and video files, they
wouldn't even notice. These people spend their entire lives trying to
acquire as much music and video as possible from the Internet. They
will never listen to 95% of what they acquire, and will always jump
when a friend offers to loan them a CD so they can rip it and add it
to their collection. Even if they don't like the group. These guys
practically keep hard drive manufacturers afloat. Closely related to
the WaReZ d00d.

Walking Encyclopedia - The Walking Encyclopedia will attempt to learn
every tiny insignificant detail about thier platform of choice, and
will bring up those details in normal conversation as often as
possible. They will also become furious if someone disputes one of
their cherished facts. Many WE's will also extend this to other
fields.

Obsessed Microsoft Hater - Obsessed Microsoft Haters will take every
opportunity to bash Microsoft and its products, even if Microsoft
isn't the subject of discussion. Many OMH's will try to back their
claims of MS Evil-ness with vague, unsubstantiated arguments like
Bill Gates is gay or Cuz it crashes. A large percentage of these
individuals actually run Microsoft operating systems and thus don't
really qualify as OS Nazis.

The Jaded Ones - The Jaded Ones are users that have been in the
industry so long that nothing impresses them anymore. They usually
like several platforms and operating systems equally, and their
computers tend to be several years old. Many Jaded Ones own several
systems, and are opposed to change in the industry.

Windows Weenie - Someone who loves Microsoft Windows and refuses to

knowledgable than Joe Sixpacks, but confines that knowledge to the

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Where are all the designers?

2008-02-20 Thread Catriona Lohan-Conway
I have always thought we as a community need to do a better job
educating recruiters/HR people to what we actually do to enable them
to understand the space, write proper job descriptions and tags, know
how to interview and hire the right people.

[IxDA Discuss] Metrics yet again... Comscore etc.

2008-02-15 Thread Catriona Lohan-Conway
Apologies for the cross posting.

Hi all...

I have been developing a competitive analysis for some clients
competitor sites and the one metric the client keep asking for is how
long do user spend on my competitors sites. I have searched but I
haven't found this feature as an option on the free metrics sites
like Alexa, Quantcast etc.

There is a Comscore, whom I have a call into, but it's expensive and
maybe more than I need but wondering if there a more affordable
instant gratification solution I can propose to my client?

All ideas appreciated.

Thanks

Catríona
