I have been running LMS on Netgear Readynas for close to 10 years.
It originally was fully supported but since Readynas OS6, support ( much
like LMS today ) has been more community based.

As others have replied, Raspberry Pi is a good option, you can either
install from scratch as it were with Raspian/Debian and download and
install all the necessary packages manually or use pre-prepared packages
from Max2Play or PiCorePlayer, both of these are easy to get up and
running and well

Can't speak for other nas, but Synology still provides a package in
their Package Center. Its just a 1 click install. It runs pretty smooth
on all current models (some lower models do have limitations), and is
solid as a rock!
Synology does not update packages that much. They build new 'more or
